My husband and I recently snuck away for a quick staycation at Valley View Casino & Hotel, and it was such a nice time. Even though the property is strictly 21-and-over (so not kid-friendly), it gave us a much-needed chance to recharge--even if we did catch ourselves missing our little boy the whole time. The hotel rooms felt brand-new, super clean, and very comfortable. It was so nice coming back to a spotlessly fresh space after spending time downstairs. The casino floor is split into designated smoking and non-smoking sections, which makes moving around comfortable for everyone. They also have convenient complimentary drink stations throughout the floor for quick refills. As for dining, we've eaten at almost all of their spots. From quick bites to sit-down meals, there's always something good to grab. Tips: Sign Up for the Players Club First: Before you sit down at a machine or head to dinner, stop by the Players Club desk. It's free to join, gets you instant match play/offers, and unlocks access to their famous Maine Lobster Buffet once you tier up. Book Hotel Rooms Early: Because the hotel is a boutique setup with limited room counts, weekends book out fast. Plan ahead if you want a weekend overnight stay. Have you visited Valley View yet? When I explained all of his training and then tasks they said he was not "acting like a service dog" and they said they watched footage of us waiting for a minute while they were coming and that he was "pulling on his lead" and "not patting attention" I said I take an accusation like this very seriously and that if they are truly claiming that I want all of this is writing and documentation of him "not acting like a service dog" as well as that video evidence of him not acting like a service dog. I then unfortunately had an episode due to the drama of it all to which my dog tasked and my husband stepped up and took over. They then realized they had messed up, changed their mind and said "we will allow it just this time" Absolutely ridiculous. My dog has gone through extensive training, been certified through two trainers, has passed his CGC and public access and the audacity for a security guard to say he wasn't acting like a service dog because he wasn't looking up at me every single second is ridiculous. They are not robots, he can get stepped on if not careful, he checks in every 10-15 seconds and alerts just fine. They would not show us footage of him "not acting like a service dog" which makes me think they were just lying to try and not allow us entry. I'm only writing this review so others don't feel absolutely awful since the valley view security treats people as the service dog police. I understand people abuse and lie about service animals, but it was quite obvious my dog is trained. To be questioned like a that was awful and just sad. Just be for warned you're going to be questioned like a criminal and may or may not be allowed entry with a service animal.

If not for her, my review would be completely different. She went above and beyond and I appreciated it so much. The grounds are full of plants, succulents, and flowers. My room was clean and comfortable. It felt like I had a little apartment on the property. I loved the variety of items in the gift shop. I came to the resort for my last night in San Diego to decompress from seeing my best friend who has terminal cancer and so I wasn't my typical self. Again, Sidney was extremely empathetic. I truly hope my friend can get out of the hospital so I can fly down again and treat her to a stay at Estancia La Jolla. Thank you so much, Sidney. Your kindness will stay in my heart. Edit: I've been thinking about my experience at Estancia. My flight out of San Diego was cancelled, so I had to book a stay at a Hampton Inn near the airport. It's a third of the price I paid to stay at Estancia, but the service here made me remember that if NOT for Sidney taking such good care of me, my review would be a one star. Honestly, I would have preferred that the issues I experienced there never even happened. Using AMEX Fine Hotels you have an expectation of the property going that extra mile. The fact that there are over 900 reviews on here and the property does not respond to any of the reviews makes me question whether they really care. It would seem that they don't.

Which seems to be the main draw here. While advertised as a resort and spa, this locale seems primarily focused on hosting weddings and events. This was confirmed after having a number of conversations with various staff members. Overall the facility is nice. Clean. Rooms are modernly appointed. The property is pretty, with numerous netting halls and rooms, several guest buildings, and adjacent gardens. It's not a huge property, and despite its beautiful surroundings and locale; doesn't really offer much in terms of views or an ability to enjoy the area unless you want to hike or bike off the property. There is one full service restaurant on the property, Mustangs and Burros, and a breakfast/lunch spot. There is also à combination gift shop/ coffee bar. Food was average at best. Much is made about the locally sourced organic ingredients, sadly flavor and seasoning doesn't seem included. Food offerings at the cafe were fairly limited. Food through their catering/event department seemed better than anything offered at the resort. Service was also fairly lackluster. Front desk staff was absolutely terrible. Incompetent and flat out rude. House keeping was similarly unhelpful and did the bare minimum. Overall was fairly disappointed with the service at the resort. The only decent service was from the valet and bell staff. Was our first visit to Estancia, and frankly likely to be our last. Did not feel there was much here to rave about. Everything seemed "ok" at best. Nice event location maybe. Would not recommend for anything else.

The rooms are beautiful and comfortable, and ours offered a wonderful view of the bay and even the ocean beyond, with a clear view of Point Loma. Down below was Roy's Restaurant and the pool area. While our bay view king room did not have a balcony, the window did have the ability to slightly open if we wanted to hear the sounds or get some fresh air. With the window closed, the room was very quiet, so we had no noise issues. We also didn't hear noise from any neighbors, with the exception of the occasional person talking the hall or letting a room door close. Though the beds were not the most comfortable we've ever had, they were comfortable enough for both of us, though the pillows weren't my favorite because they were the kind of feather pillows you need to bunch up so they aren't too thin. They aren't very soft or spongy. Nonetheless, I was able to sleep on them sufficiently well. We can be a little picky about beds and getting good sleep, and we slept fine. Unfortunately, like many hotels, the sink, toilet, and shower/tub are all in one room, making it less convenient for two people to be doing things at the same time, especially since there is only one sink. There was a decent amount of lighting and space for toiletry items. We had no major complaints about the room, but we did have a broken toilet paper fixture in the bathroom on the wall next to the toilet that resulted in the toilet paper falling on the floor several times. Service was super friendly, but it was difficult to reach the front desk at times without a very long wait on the phone. When I called down to request a luggage rack for the room, I was told someone would bring one up, but it never came. I had to walk to the front desk to ask for one, which was later delivered. They do have an automated attendant that lets you request a limited number of items, and I was able to request a robe for my wife that way. While we were there, the elevators were a problem for a lot of people. For part of the time we were there, some in our tower were not working, causing relatively long waits for the remaining elevators and sometimes multiple stops on the way down or up at peak use times. The hotel said they were working on it, and things did seem to improve a little by the time we checked out. The property itself is beautiful and laid out well for its limited space in this part of town. Once inside, and even outside when walking the grounds near the pool, you are in a bit of a protected oasis that doesn't make you feel like you are sandwiched between the bay and the street out front. We ate outside every day with the conference, and the area we were in was super pleasant. There are a number of restaurants on property, but since we were usually eating with the conference, we didn't have time to try any except for the Marketplace. It was very expensive for most items, but the quality was really good, and we never had much of a wait. They serve Starbucks coffee here, but you can probably save a bit of money if you get that (or mobile order) from the on-site Starbucks, which is in a different part of the building. The food served at the conference was of good quality. If you go to many conferences, you'll find it to be competitive with any of the better resorts, though, in my opinion and as one might expect, it doesn't outshine the Ritz-Carlton or certain J.W. Marriott facilities. The food service staff for the conference were excellent, helpful, and fast. The hotel is in a very convenient area downtown on the bay next to the San Diego Convention Center. Traffic in the short distance between here and the freeway can be bad depending on time of day or events happening at either the convention center, downtown, or at Petco Park, where the Padres play, but the distance is short enough for it not to be much of a headache in most cases. I doubt you'll find very many cities with access this easy from the hotel to the airport and all of the local attractions, including, in this case, the Gaslamp District, Little Italy, Coronado, the bayside attractions, Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, and more. Hotel parking is expensive, of course, so if you don't really need a car, I highly recommend using Uber or Lyft or walking to get around to the nearest things. Overall, I would certainly stay here again, and I do highly recommend this hotel if you are attending a conference or vacationing in this part of the city and can afford the price point.

Literally an entire city block. It opened in 1910 with 437 rooms, because apparently people in 1910 were not interested in subtlety. The history is everywhere, but it doesn't feel like you're sleeping inside a museum. It feels grand and dramatic. Exactly what a historic hotel should be. And breakfast was FAB. They did offer complimentary bottles of water while we were in line, and there were also refreshments on a counter near the elevator. Given the location, the hotel doesn't have any designated parking, and the dropoff area is the "back door" so some rideshare drivers got confused even though there is signage pointing to the alley for dropoff. Bellhops opened doors and got our luggage before we even got a chance, which was definitely 5 star service. The Grant Grill is the single on-site restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a lounge service (food starts at 3pm) until 11pm. Staff all around were polite, helpful, and quick to help. The food at the Grant Grill was pretty good, very large portions, but also on the expensive side. If you have credit to use, it's a great option, but there definitely other options in the area than at the hotel. The room itself was decently spacious and we were pleasantly surprised by the turndown service. Plush robes and slippers were provided, and additional bottles of water were in the cubby with the nespresso machine. There was a good amount of outlets in the room, but only one located near the beds. Someone in our party had a fan in their bathroom, and someone else did, so the room amenities seem to vary depending on the type of room you get. The main gripe I had was the elevators were quite slow and small, probably due to how the hotel was structured back in the day, and not all elevators go to all the floors. The wifi was also really bad, it kept disconnecting and then saying it would charge me the next time I tried to connect, so I gave up on it (we heard that it's just a tech issue and they don't charge you, but it's very confusing for a guest). But cellular service also wasn't great in the lobby area where you wait for pick up so, I wish the wifi had worked out. All in all, we have a pleasant stay and I'd come back again. Staff and overall experience made the few drawbacks worth it. Parking is valet only and pretty pricey so keep that in mind.
