I hired Kashan Carpet Care to stretch the carpet throughout my 3-level townhome. Danny Kashany, the company owner, said he could reduce the folds but not fully remove them; the carpet would still be mildly ridged and would need to be replaced if I wanted that problem solved. I said if that was the case I would consider carpet replacement in the future but for now I just wanted the folds reduced as much as possible.
Using a mini-stretcher and a knee kicker, Danny's assistant stretched the carpet while Danny supervised him. On the 2nd and 3rd levels, they reduced the folds to near-flatness, with only mild ridges remaining. On the 1st level, however, they left large folds and air pockets. I asked Danny if he could stretch the carpet more. He said stretching it any further may tear it; he said the carpet was damaged beyond repair and, again, would need to be replaced for that problem to be solved. Not knowing better, I took his word for it.
Some days later, I did what I should have done before hiring Danny: I watched some videos on how to properly stretch a carpet. Apparently, for best results, you're supposed to use a full-size power stretcher, not just a mini-stretcher and a knee kicker. I called another carpet care specialist and asked him what tool he used to stretch carpet. He said a power stretcher. I asked if he ever used only a mini-stretcher and a knee kicker. He said no, of course not.
I asked the other contractor if he could look at my carpets and tell me if they could be stretched more thoroughly. He saw them and said yes. So I hired him. His assistant went to work with the power stretcher. They completely removed all the ridges. The carpet looked brand new - no trace of any ridges left behind.
I informed Danny of this outcome via e-mail. Following is an excerpt from his reply.
"Your carpet got stretched 5 months ago and when we finished the job, it looked okay since we spent 4 hours to get the job done and cut lots of inches from your carpets. Now, you are telling me that the carpet got buckled in some areas and you had to re-stretch it again. Honestly, I'm not surprised since it may come back again after a few months. If you remember, you have been told that this is a temporary solution for your carpet and if you don't like to see this problem at all, you need to go with the carpet replacement option."
The folds that Danny had reduced did not "come back"; they remained as he left them - near-flat but still visible on the 2nd and 3rd levels and still heavily folded on the 1st level, where Danny warned against further stretching, saying it may tear the carpet.
But it didn't. The second contractor completely removed all traces of every fold on every level, a result Danny had not achieved with any of the folds. The obvious reason is that Danny used only a mini-stretcher and a knee kicker, not a power stretcher.
It's possible Danny did not understand the advantage of a power stretcher (industry standard equipment) and thought a mini-stretcher and a knee kicker alone would achieve the best possible result (short of replacing the carpet). That seems odd for a seasoned carpet care specialist. But the only other possibility is that Danny deliberately did an inferior carpet stretching job, hoping to sell me a new carpet. Either way, my experience logically suggests that Danny is not the one to call for carpet stretching.
Edit: Danny stated, in his reply to this review, "Since we refused to provide you with free services in another job, now you are trying to revenge us by ruin our excellent reputation." I have never requested free services from a contractor. I asked him, via private message, if he could describe the request I supposedly made. He did not respond. It's possible he had me confused with someone else. I gave him a chance to clarify his strange accusation. But if he can't, I'm forced to suspect he invented the story to make it appear I had an ulterior motive to write my critical review. That's deceitful and low.
Also he asked, "Didn't you have 30 days warranty for our repair job?" He had already written, via e-mail to me, "The fact about carpet stretching service is we can not give you any kind of warranty for this type of job, because the carpet which got stretched is old and may show the buckles or wrinkles again after a while due to different reasons like temperature differential."
I realize he has a good reputation. I would not have hired him otherwise. I screen contractors carefully, so I rarely have problems with their work. But I can only speak for my experience, and the facts are plain. Danny did a poor job, another contractor did the job properly - night-and-day difference - and then Danny argued that the job he did was the best that could be done. He can be defensive all he wants; I have to stick with simple logic. read more
