I visited Karma this past Monday with a friend after stumbling across it on TikTok, and I'm so glad I did! It looked like such a cool, unique place, and it was only a few minutes from my apartment. I loved it so much that I brought a friend back today for another massage, and he was very impressed by how great his massage was. Parking is street parking, so it can be a little tough to find a spot. However, there is a paid parking lot directly across from the spa, which is a convenient option. We each booked a 60-minute deep tissue massage. One thing I really loved is that after your service, you can pay an additional $50 per person to enjoy all of the amenities. If you don't book a service, the day pass is $100. From the moment you arrive, the experience feels different. They take your shoes and give you slippers to wear throughout the spa. They also give you a top and shorts to put on. You have a key to a locker that you wear on your wrist. It's super convenient where you just tap it against the lock. There's a heated wooden floor and a cozy lounge area upstairs, and they serve what might be the best tea I've ever had. I definitely lost count of how many cups I drank! The massages are downstairs, while all of the amenities and different wellness rooms are upstairs. Since it was our first visit, we did the "first-time focus" wellness journey, which allowed us to experience each room. They have two different formats for the curated wellness journey, one for visual learners and one that is written. I thought this was such a cool concept. It even tells you how long you should spend in each room, and each room has information explaining the physical, mental, and emotional benefits. There's also a guided wellness experience you can participate in. *Forest Room: This room is adorable. You choose a stone that you feel drawn to, and it guides you through focusing on an intention. *Cold Room: Unfortunately, this room wasn't as cold as it should have been. We were told it should drop to around 60°, but we arrived around 11 AM and by 1 PM it was still around 68°. The room itself is super cute and has a cloud-like atmosphere though. *Himalayan Salt Room: This was probably one of my favorites because it really helped my sinuses. There's also a massage chair where you can relax while enjoying the room. *Red Light Room: They provide protective glasses for your eyes, and there's a bin where you place them afterward so they can be cleaned and reused. There are also Mugwort and Mud Rooms, and I loved that the rooms have hourglasses with different time increments. It's such a simple detail, but it encourages you to put your phone away, stop checking the time, and actually be present. There's also a snack area stocked with individual packets of Asian snacks, Chex Mix, nuts, and lemon water. The dressing room area is also really nice. They have showers with multiple showerheads, which made for a very relaxing shower after the spa experience. They provide body wash, shampoo, and conditioner along with toothbrushes, blow dryers, deodorant, and pretty much everything you need to get ready afterward. Another really unique feature is the intention wall. You can write something you want to manifest and post it on the wall. At the end of the month, they take the intentions down and hold a little ceremony of sorts to help manifest them. I thought that was such a beautiful touch. And the deep tissue massage was absolutely phenomenal. My therapist used great pressure and really focused on pressure points, leaving me feeling incredibly relaxed afterward. Overall, Karma was an incredible experience and such a perfect reset. From the thoughtful wellness journey and unique rooms to the amazing massage, tea, snacks, and relaxing atmosphere. There are so many little details that make this place special. read more

I don't know why this place has such bad reviews. Yes it's under construction but it is coming along! I had a beautiful experience. It felt like I had the whole place to myself. I am nervous to share because I don't want it to get busy, but I won't gate keep(; I did the one hour $50 rooms (mugwort, clay, Himalayan salt, forest) it was wonderful. This place is definitely not worth the price the lotion used on my body gave me a neck rash the therapist focused on more of my neck instead of my body I didn't feel like she had enough experience to be a massage therapist. The service for me was very disappointing . The receptionist I thought they felt like I needed to leave a tip not I brought my daughter for her birthday and thought it would be a great idea for me to join her. She had a good experience I'm thankful for that otherwise it would've have been all bad! I can chalk up my loss but not 2. I scheduled 2 massages on my girlfriends birthday last Wednesday , I was well aware there were renovations being done prior but to hear hammering and drilling your entire massage was not relaxing at all. The girl at the counter offered 10% off one massage which was nice of her but it still didn't feel as if it made up for it. When you pay for a service I feel something like that should not be done during peoples massages. We both felt that was a bit inconsiderate.It was very loud the whole time through. I saw a few videos online, I finally booked my first massage--and now I find myself thinking about it all the time. I'll definitely be back soon. The experience exceeded my expectations. Second time visiting Karma Spa in Hillcrest area. The first time was a bad experience because the foot massage was done in the front hallway and could hear every little thing with people walking and talking throughout the session. We decided to give it another try because they have a sauna so we scheduled a couples VP package which included a 60 mins body massage, 15 min sauna, and 15 mins foot detox. What we like is the parking lot next to the place, a little tight but it's free or nearby. The place is clean, the massage sheets seemed fresh, the restroom smelled nice and was clean. It's also decorated nicely. The massage was nice but wasn't over the top nice. The sauna was a dry sauna but had the option to pour water on hot rocks to get it steamy. The foot detox experience was done in a back room that looked like the vanity room. My husband said his water was very hot to the point that he wanted to lift his feet and had a lasting tingly sensation afterwards. My water was lukewarm. Why the two stars- the massage was first, then sauna and had to put our clothes on after being so sweaty and they didn't have a shower offered, felt rushed between each service, and at the end told them I had to use the restroom and the lady looked disappointed trying to rush us out of there. And as another reviewer mentioned, each service ended a few mins earlier than their time. Then when paying, the front desk guy said it was a $5 discount for cash when paying as a couple but when scheduled over the phone with the office manager, she confirmed $190 but was ultimately charged $195. Oh well. I would say bring cash to get a $5 discount because there's a 3% fee when paying with card. Not sure if we'll be back due to both of these experiences we had. read more

I had a very pleasant experience overall. The receptionist was warm and welcoming, which set a positive tone from the moment I arrived. My massage was with Emily, and she truly has healing hands. She was extremely comforting, applied just the right amount of pressure, and checked in with me throughout the session to ensure I was comfortable. I highly recommend her and will definitely be returning for another massage. The location is also very convenient, with a parking lot right next to the building and plenty of street parking available. After the massage, I genuinely felt like a new person--completely refreshed, and the tension in my neck had completely disappeared. That said, there were a few areas that could be improved. It appeared that construction was ongoing, and the waiting area felt dimly lit and not very inviting. For a spa where people come to relax and rejuvenate, the ambiance could be better. There was also a group of ladies having a loud business-related discussion, which took away from the calming atmosphere. Additionally, some small touches like offering tea or refreshments upon arrival would elevate the overall experience. Went down to spend to day in san diego and saw this place with great reviews , so I booked a 2 couples massage and added aromatherapy extra at 4 pm. Place is under reconstruction which wasn't a big deal but after the massage after I got dressed , the therapists were waiting outside the door with cups of water which was nice. So I tipped EACH lady $20 tip and then one of ladies gave me attitude and said that's it and that was a 2 hour massage should be more . I've done many high end spas and that's the norm for a fair tip. So I gave them another $20 each bc they made feel awkward and embarrassed. So it ended up being $40 tip each on top of the $340 fee for massages and never got the aromatherapyby the way. . It's my first time coming to this massage parlor. I was already in love with their simple decors. Kathy greeted me and helped me setup my appointment. She is the sweetest, she was very helpful on booking the correct massage for me. I did a deep tissue with hot stone. Jennifer was my masseuse, she was very attentive and caring during the whole processed. She checked up on me and made sure the hot stone wasn't burning me. Got the "Premiere package" which if you can, I definitely recommend. The treatment is royal. I had Gina & she took care of me the whole time. The business is going through some much needed upgrades. So there's construction but didn't interfere with my visit. My only issue which I believe is going to be addressed is the carpet. If you have ever been in an old run down hotel/motel with spots & old, then that is what I am speaking of. But the service doesn't lack. Professional & atmosphere is relaxing . I always feel great On day 2 3/26/23 had my 1st facial with Michelle. Check in with front desk & she comes from upstairs & takes you up to her place. And my 1st time experience was nice although I had no prior to compare it to. Absolute favorite spot for deep tissue, hot oil, hot stone and couples massages! The spa is well-maintained, always super clean and mellow as soon as you walk in. You check in with the front desk receptionist and are welcomed to wait on some comfy couches, have some water and explore their collection of essential oils. Promptly, you're welcomed back to your massage room by whoever you're booked with. I have gone multiple times now and was first paired with Mike at random, but have requested him every time since. Mike is a true professional. He is thorough, checks in often during the massage to ensure that the pressure used is ideal and just makes me feel like I'm truly being taken care of. It feels as though he just knows exactly what each muscle group needs and he gets the job done to relax, stretch and release them all! Being said, I appreciate that Mike is not shy about actually getting into the glute muscles and upper chest muscles, while most massage therapists I've experienced, have been too preoccupied with keeping me covered up as a female client. If that's not your style, I'd vocalize it but I personally appreciate have those major muscle groups get the same attention as every other muscle group during the massage! It was my first time at Karma Relaxation. I went for a prenatal massage. When I arrived, the front desk was quick to help. Being 9 months pregnant, first thing I had to do was use the restroom. A masseuse (not mine) used the restroom before me and did not wash her hands. Minor red flag. I was never asked how far along I am. The person at the front desk told my masseuse "one hour, baby" which made me a little nervous. I have had multiple prenatal massages and know that what they do varies widely based on how far along you are. That was kind of a red flag but I thought they would just take the safest approach (no low back, no feet, avoiding pressure points, etc). I was wrong. The only thing prenatal about the massage was the pregnancy pillow and not laying on my stomach. The masseuse spent a lot of time going hard on my lower back. I had to tell her multiple times to not go so hard and do less to my lower back. There was no avoiding of pressure points. She also massaged towards the womb- which I've never had in a prenatal massage and worried me. Once she had done my back and legs on both sides she told me to "flip up" or words to that effect. I told her that I can't lay on my back because it will cut off circulation to me and the baby. After about 24 weeks, pregnant people should not lay on their backs. She did not understand and kept telling me to lay on my back. I told her no because baby and she eventually stopped asking. I asked her to spend more time on my feet, which she did. She was very nice, but not trained in prenatal massages. If I was not full term and trying to induce labor, I would have left. The methods used (deep tissue, especially on the lower back, disregard for pressure points, and asking someone with a giant belly to lay on their back) would be dangerous for most pregnant women. It could cause miscarriage or preterm labor. Frankly, it's a liability for Karma Relaxation to advertise prenatal massage and not have people trained to work on pregnant women. They should train on how to work on pregnant women, or stop advertising prenatal massages before someone gets hurt. I realized there are no reviews on their parental massages so I leave this as a warning to pregnant women to stay away unless you are trying to induce labor- even then there are many trained prenatal massage places in San Diego. Don't risk your and your baby's health for the low price. read more

My favorite massage spot! Came across this place from my estheticians recommendation and have been coming here ever since. Price is reasonable, and they run great promos (cash only for these!) Emma and Jack have been incredible for my deep tissue massages - highly recommend. Tipping is cash only but they do take card for the service. They have an atm in the lobby with minimal fees. 100% one of our favorite spots for a rejuvenating date night in San Diego! My fiancé and I feel safe going there because they are taking all of the recommended health and safety precautions to protect their customers. Bonus, 100% of the staff is fully vaccinated! We really love how the decor has evolved in the main reflexology room. All the little curtains and lights give it such an intimate and dreamy vibe. We have had massages in both the community room as well as in the private rooms and have a blast each time! All of the massage therapists are excellent but our favorites are Jack and Mila. I really like Jack because he is super strong but skilled at deep tissue and acupressure. I am an ICU nurse and my back is riddled with spasms and after a session with Jack I feel a huge amount of relief. My fiancé likes Mila because she is strong yet gentle and does a great deep tissue/Swedish massage mix during her sessions. The owner, Jing, has recently purchased the entire building and is expanding into the upstairs with a series of saunas and expanded esthetician services. Make sure to schedule an appointment a few days ahead of time, either by calling or through their website. The only issue I have with the website is that they don't seem to update the times that are available or not. I booked it through their website and I was lucky enough to get a time slot I wanted. I think it would be best to just give the spa a call in order to make an appointment. I scheduled a hot oil massage for an hour, and my masseuse's name is Austin. Unlike other massage places I've been to, I didn't feel the need to let him know if the pressure was too much or too little. He did it just right for me, and I liked how he checked up on me from time to time. I've also never fallen asleep during a massage before, and I found myself waking up from snoring at least three times throughout the massage, which was pretty embarrassing for me. However, having fallen asleep just means to me that I definitely had a relaxing massage! Most online reviews here were good but i concur with the recent ones that reflect my experiences today. Lesson: trust your gut and don't hesitate to leave when a service is inaccurately advertised and not delivered. I have has massages monthly for over two decades. And I have never left a "spa" early! I walked out 20 mins into this fiasco. I was led back past the nicer part of the place through a winding hallway that appears to be under construction and the guy leading me (we were not introduced) kept saying "Be careful! Be safe!" The rugs were covering uneven floor. The room was just a makeshift room with an old carpet and two tables. Didn't seem clean and definitely not your usual "spa" set up. No massage licenses displayed. He motioned to a bin on the floor and said put your things there, and left. There was NO discussion of the massage. The standard discussion that occurs on your first visit in establishments that have non native English speakers or in other countries that cater to people with other languages. They often offer a handout on which you circle the parts of the body needing attention or to avoid. To help bridge the language barrier. Or the clerk up front asks you the questions and conveys them to the massage therapist. This place had none of that. When he entered he told me take your mask off. I said no thank you -- he laughed. (I said I have an auto immune condition and like to be careful -- at that point it was painfully clear he didn't understand and it was nervous laughter.) (Yet I felt maybe this will end up great.) First few minutes: He started to push down along my spine then legs, over the sheet. Again and again. I waited for the massage to properly begin. It didn't. I realized this guy is not a typical massage therapist doing an American-type Swedish massage I'd asked for. He just kept pressing on me through the sheet. Up and down. Not relaxing. (Think Phoebe Buffet wooden spoon massage.) My bad -- I waited about 15 mins -- finally I asked can you massage with strokes, not pressing. He repeated the word "pressing." Also said I have had a knee injury can you avoid that -- he laughed and didn't respond -- and it was clear we had a complete language barrier that prohibited a good massage. I might actually get my knee further injured without communication. I finally said I need to leave. I do not feel comfortable because I need to communicate with you. He asked, "you want a female?" I said no just someone who i can explain what I would like. He left and I waited. Then I just got dressed. He returned with another guy. I started to explain that I would like to talk about what I need and he said hold on -- he did not speak English either -- and got a young woman. She was nice and said you want a woman instead? I said no thank you this isn't working please take me back to the entrance. I told her on the way back i need to explain what i need but she smiled and nodded but either wanted me gone or did not speak much English either. She led me back through the corridors. The front desk clerk didn't seem interested or surprised. I said I could not communicate with the therapist and he didn't introduce himself or ask any questions and could not understand my requests. She shrugged and said sorry. I said okay we'll then I'm going to leave without paying. She said okay sorry. That was that. I went with a friend. She had a similar experience except her therapist eventually gave an okay massage after the pressing part, which didn't last as long. She stuck it out -- bless her -- but she says her room didn't feel clean and there was a sign saying please don't solicit the therapists. She wishes she'd left. They charged her card 50% for my massage (which lasted less than 20 mins of a 90-min booking). She got an email saying I was a no show. I called and the clerk said it's a hold and I won't be charged. If so we will dispute this. Doesn't look to feel like any legit spa/massage establishment we'd seen before. They didn't behave professionally. This was not a well-trained therapist -- usually they learn communication and how to take care understanding client needs. (I know this from years working with Florida School of Massage teachers and therapists!) You get what you pay for. Or maybe I'll pay for what I didn't get? The word "spa" in the name threw us both off. So very disappointed. Don't go here. Pay $50 more and get a real spa massage with someone who cares what you want and need. I don't care if the room is fancy. This is an intimate experience and you must feel safe and comfortable to relax and have a massage. Communication is key. Uhhhrrrgh. PS My friend just described her experience there as "skanky." PPS Let's hope I don't get charged. Seems like a BBB or CAMT or the state issue if so. read more

Honestly, shocked this place has decent reviews. A local influencer on Instagram recommended it and I was stupid enough not to do my research. I had an appointment for a back and shoulder massage. The building is really old, you can hear the floor squeak, and it really needs to be updated. To my horror, there are signs in the massage rooms that say no prostitution and no sexual favors! This is NOT what you want to see when you arrive at a business. Thankfully the rooms appeared clean. The massage itself was really painful. I'm hoping my shoulders and back feel better in a couple days, but I'm really sore even the day after. To the point where if someone lightly puts a finger on my back or shoulders it hurts. I came in with tightness and discomfort and now I have actual pain. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere! read more
