However, she spent most of the session concerned with my BMI (mostly ignoring my poor mental health, the pandemic, and despite acknowledging my active lifestyle including lifting). She relies on outdated science, telling me to not eat eggs because of the cholesterol, even though that has been debunked for several years now. After body shaming me, she THEN asked if I had a history of eating disorders. If you're completely healthy she's probably fine, but overall it was the worst experience I've had at Harvard Vanguard. She is an older doctor, which unfortunately should have been the first sign despite the ethical obligation to remain updated on new science.

I don't think I will not change to other primary doctors anymore. Compare to other primary physicians, she really pays attentions to me and I am very please with her kindness. The other day, I had a question about over the counter medication, so I send an email to her and she called me back within 15 min or so after I send an email. It was actually Dr. Wagner who called me back instead of N.P. I thought that was very nice of her and I was glad with her quick response. I also just had my annual check up and she spend good 45min with me and all the exam was done very professionally. She asked many questions about my health. Beside, we also had few personal conversation here and there. I thought that was very nice too. If you are looking for a primary doctor who can be personal, she is the one!

But, what's really incredibly, is that both she and her RN, who sees patients after-hours, follow up with patients' urgent concerns. I've received evening and next day calls to see how I was doing, and even calls a week later, to see how my appointment with a specialist went. And totally unrelatedly, it's not unusual to find Dr. N in Gucci, Chanel, and perfect manicure, which makes me feel a little underdressed in my paper gown, but I like a woman who brings her A game.

I love that Dr. Tomkins is open to and even suggests natural interventions before chemical ones. She is helpful in creating a modified vaccine schedule, and knows about alternative medicine. I've also seen Dr. Coffey at the office (Ball Sq. Family Health), and was very comfortable with him also. He is the only "Dr. Sears approved" doctor in the area! It's always super frustrating when a doctor listens to your first 5 words, comes up with a conclusion (no matter how correct it may be), and then spends the rest of the session and your words reinforcing their opinion of that conclusion. It's a basic failure of the scientific method. You don't skew and cherrypick the data to follow your initial conclusion, like in middle school science class. You look at all the data first, and then come up with possible conclusions. Dr. Kwo passes this acid test with five stars. Not only was she kind and attentive while listening to my descriptions, she also made me privy to her thought process and helped me rule out any serious concerns by patiently explaining each and every single one. As if this is not stellar enough, today I phoned the primary care office with an urgent question while feeling very sick and had to resort to leave a message at the front desk for her. Getting an appointment would have taken too long. Just an hour later she called me back, and answered my questions on the phone for a whole 15 minutes! When I thanked her, she casually replied "Oh sure, there's no way we were going to let you go through that by yourself". I think that sums it up nicely. Primary care, like teaching, is one of those things where being a good academic is very necessary but not sufficient by itself. You also need a healthy dose of understanding, empathy, care and compassion. Dr Kwo has both, with a healthy dose of common sense too. I don't know if she plans to keep doing primary care after her residency, but I sure hope she does for my own selfish purposes :)

I'm a fat, queer woman, and I was very nervous about finding a new doctor when I had to for insurance. I found Dr. Haft on a list of LGBT positive providers, and she has been my doctor now for a little over 2 years. Every experience with her and her office has been very good. The office gets back to me quickly when I need to schedule an appointment, the staff is all friendly and professional, general good vibes. A few specific call-outs for others considering the office: - As I mentioned, I am fat. This does not prevent me from getting good care here, and it honestly has at other practices in the past. My weight is clinically discussed when relevant, but I always feel like I'm being viewed as a whole person with many health attributes including my weight. - Preferred names and pronouns were discussed and are confirmed each visit. Language around personal relationships is also neutral and includes various relationship style options and pronouns. This is great. - I've typically had bad experiences with getting blood taken, and have pretty deep veins on my arms. They have been successful here every time, which is unusual for me. - Sometimes the schedule is running behind, but I genuinely don't care. I alot a little extra time for my appointment on my calendar, but what I appreciate is that even if the schedule is running behind, you get full attention and time when you are being seen.
