I accidentely found KaoKao on a web site and it looked interesting, after all, it is chocolate. I signed us up for the two hour "tour" and Chocolate making. The shop is located in a neighborhood and not a tourist area in a small storefront. Nancy led our experience and gave us an interesting talk on chocolate and its history. It was really interesting. We then actually ground some "nibs" and made our own chocolate for hot chocolate. It was a lit of fun and we ended up taking our little medallion of chocolate home with us to try on some winter evening. Nancy also gave us samples of different types of flavored chocolate. They were just small pieces but by the time we were finished I think we had about 20 different chocolates. The tour is inexpensive and a lot of fun. As an added comment, we were on a cruise and the cab fare was about the same as a ride into the tourist area. This is not in a tourist area so you'll see where people actually live. Nancy will call a cab for you for the trip back to the ship or to the tourist area. Again, this was a lot of fun. read more

Every time I go to Cozumel I like to buy their chocolates. I did not do any research prior and didn't know where to go. We asked our driver to take us to best chocolate shop in town and he took us to Kaokao. We were really please. We were greeted by the nicest ladies who walked us inside the shop. They also gave tours here but we were there strictly just to purchase. The lady behind the counter did offer us some samples. I had a lot of questions and the nice staff was able to answer all of them. She also knew all the ingredients in them and helped me choose what was best for me. I ended up getting some dark chocolate, milk chocolate, coffee espresso beans, and some other goodies. The shop was really cute and they had all things chocolate and more. They even had toys and souvenirs. But their star are their chocolates which are high-quality and made from the finest ingredients. They even had interesting chocolate flavor combinations. The shop should also be clean, well-maintained, and air conditioned. Pricing was also reasonable. I highly recommend if you are in Cozumel and want to stop in a good chocolate shop. read more

Their website seems to discourage children, but our 1 and 3 year old had a great time! We had a large group, so made them easy to manage. There was enough video & activities to hold their attention, and who doesn't love trying chocolate samples! Our guide was great and made quite a few funny jokes - definitely recommend. read more

My husband and I made a reservation for a chocolate tour at Kaokao Chocolate Factory when we were in Cozumel. Time slots for the tours are limited and only 3 tours are offered per day, so make reservations as soon as you can. The price per person is $25. There were 8 of us in the tour (the maximum capacity is 12 people). This is not because of COVID, but they are actually a small business, and their tours are meant to be of a small and intimate size. The entire tour lasted about 2 hours. We learned a great deal about the history of Mayan chocolate, and the chocolate making process. The tour was very fun and interactive. We got to see and taste the cacao bean before it was roasted, after it was roasted, and even rub cocoa butter from the cacao bean on our hands. Our guide also made us the sacred beverage the Mayans drank. It tasted like a watered down hot chocolate and should be spicy, but I think she adjusted the spice level to accommodate the group, which was nice of her. During the 2nd half of the tour, each person got to make their own chocolate Mexican disc from scratch. We got to grind the coffee beans ourselves - the faster you grind the more heat is generated, and the more oil you have, which makes it easier to shape your chocolate disc. Kao Kao's chocolate is pure chocolate and not mixed with additives. Throughout the tour, our guide was very patient and did not rush us. My husband and I enjoyed the tour very much. I highly recommend this tour and can see kids would really like this tour as well. $25/person for a 2 hour interactive activity is a great deal. In the gift shop, they also have other delicious chocolate offerings and reasonably priced souvenirs. read more

We rented a car and drove over to the location while in port from a cruise. The location is definitely a little ways from the port. I'm sure you could get a cab to take you, but it was just easier to rent a car. The location is down a narrow road, so you would probably have to go back to the main road to catch a new cab. I highly recommend doing the chocolate tour where you make your own chocolate and get to try all the samples. They started right on time. The lady showing us was super sweet. We watched a couple videos that showed how the process works. You then grind your own cocoa nibs into a paste, add sugar and grind again. You then put it into a mold and wrap them. You end up with multiple hot chocolate discs. There were 4 in our party and one other party of 4 with our group. read more

My husband, sister, and I booked a tour here through our cruise excursions and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The workers at the factory went through the history of chocolate-making in the area, showing the different stages of growth for the cacao bean. And then, they let us grind our own beans and make our own chocolate! We were given beans, cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar as ingredients. It's a bit of work but so much fun and it really helps to add to the chocolate tour experience. Afterwards, we were able to taste the chocolate that they made, and of course, shop and purchase their products. So much fun. The staff themselves were super friendly and helpful, willing to go the extra mile to make us happy. They had a professional photographer there and we were able to purchase a wonderful picture of our group. We bought chocolate and honey, and they had great deals if you bought in bulk, so we were happy with our purchase. Definitely a place to visit if you have the opportunity. read more

First of all, let's be honest, it's hard to go wrong with chocolate. But if there is a "right" way to do it, this is it. Their product is out of this world and learning the process, making our own pieces of chocolate to take home, was really fun. Aside from that the people were incredibly nice and the interior is a beautiful well-appointed space. I couldn't recommend this place more. Off the beaten path and about a 40 peso taxi from the Punta Langosta. Worth the visit. Miguel was fun and amazing and offered a great tour. We were lucky enough to have a private tour and be able to make our own chocolate bars with him. You get to actually grind the cocoa beans and mix in other ingredients. Miguel was easy to talk with and we had fun conversations about our country and his country. We also priced the chocolate at the tourist area near the cruise ships and you get far better prices at the factory and the chocolate is more fresh. We ended up going back today again to get more chocolate gifts. read more

We booked online and did a tour here on our vacation on Friday. We got confused on the time change and showed up 90+ minutes early but since it is their off season (their peak season being November to April) we were the only tour booked at that time so they graciously bumped up the time and did our tour then. Rubi was our tour guide and she was great. Super friendly and personable as well as patient with our language barrier since we spoke little to no Spanish. After a history lesson on the origins of chocolate and washing our hands we were taken to their workshop where we hands on got to grind some cacao into our own hot chocolate discs. Which we shaped and wrapped up to take home. Then we proceeded into the shop area for tasting of all of their varieties of chocolate. They were all amazing. My personal favorites were the cactus and the chocolate covered cranberries but really everything was really good. At $15 US this tour is really worth it especially on days when you get rained out from the beach but it is a nice escape from the heat as well since it is indoors. They do two tours a day one at 11am and one at 1pm. read more

This little chocolate factory is adorable! We stopped by on a whim while cruising (just asked our kind taxi driver if we could go to a chocolate factory). The kind people working there got us in, and accommodated our small group of 5 even though they didn't currently have a group tour going on. Stephanie, an adorable employee, took us to a room to teach us how chocolate is made. She did a fantastic job of explaining it on a level the kids could understand. She also made a chocolate drink for us to try. Then we were able to go into a different room and taste about 15-20 bite-sized pieces of chocolate. That way we knew which kinds we wanted to by from the well-stocked gift shop! I think our chocolate experience was only $5 per person. Definitely worth a stop! read more
