We had the most amazing experience with Nassim during our tour on the morning/afternoon of 3/19. We were staying at an all-inclusive resort for a wedding but myself, my wife and several of her friends found the food severely lacking. The cuisine at the resort was catered toward more western tastes/preferences and so we sought to find other options. We found Cancun Food Tours through one of the travel apps and the reviews were consistently 5 stars and above so we chose it without hesitation. Nassim and his driver picked us up at 0930 on the dot and we were off.
The tour consisted of 5 total stops:
First was at Mercado 23, a truly local market which the citizens of Cancun frequent for groceries and such. This was in stark comparison to Market 28 which was basically a tourist trap and was recommended by the resort concierge. (This can be skipped as all the shops basically sell the same things at inflated prices.) At Market 23, we were able to visit a shop which sold items we were looking for but at drastically lower price points. It was here where we visited a local vendor who sold tamales of all different flavors. There were 6 of us in our group so we tried one flavor each and shared amongst each other to get a taste of everything. Weirdly enough, the strawberry and raisin tamale was really good!
Our second stop was El Pocito, a family owned and run restaurant that has been present since 1988 and used a traditional recipe for their offerings. The tacos de cochinita we had included a tortilla that was stuffed with refried beans which totally made the dish. We also had the option of choosing an agua fresca to wash down the taco and you cannot go wrong with any flavor you choose.
Our next stop was by far my favorite which was a shop near city hall that was frequented by local workers and by far had the most meat within the taco. For P25 or ~$1.25, you got a double taco with a heaping serving of meat which required something carbonated to wash it down. It bordered on ridiculous but I wasn't complaining!
For our fourth destination, we ate at El Mero for what Nassim called "quesabirria," a portmanteau of quesadilla and birria and his favorite "treat yo'self" spot. The quesabirria was definitely tasty and I could see why it was his favorite place to eat.
For our fifth and final stop, Nassim also took us to get paletas or ice pops for dessert and with so many flavors to choose from, we definitely had our pick of the litter. I had the coconut one which had bits of coconut within while my wife had the pistachio one which contained chocolate shavings which made the paleta really tasty.
We cannot say enough nice things about Nassim and can only encourage others to book him for his taco tour while you're in the area. His intimate knowledge of mexican cuisine and the local offerings are second to none. He mentioned that he was also a chef/cooking instructor and that they also offered cooking classes. If I return to Cancun, I'd definitely love to try his class and experience searching the market for ingredients to make what surely would be an epic meal.
PS. Nassim also proved himself to be a true renaissance man as he showed us local graffiti artwork which spoke to us on so many different levels.
