I ordered chicken tenders for are meal before the match. I ordered them at the food court that has section 114 by it. I took two bites very quickly and then found out the chicken was completely raw. Still love hockey, but it doesn't seem quite the same as it used to. The building is still in good shape and there is a lot of parking for handicap cars, probably not quite enough though bc we were 30 minutes early and got the last spot. The arena is pretty loud, but that is to be expected. Food is WAY overpriced; this is a minor league team guys. $5 for a bottle of pop or water is insane. We had a great time at the game though, and got to watch some good hockey. I'm sad about the name and logo change, the Hunt's made a mistake there. I get them wanting to keep the KC brand name, but there was nothing wrong with the MO Mavericks name and it was more accurate since the team is in INDEPENDENCE, NOT KC. The black and orange is also horrible, very halloweenish and off putting. Once we got past the shock of the changes (we had season tickets right up until the year the Hunt family bought them and jacked up the prices over 30% & attempted to implement a charge for parking) since the last time we attended we did have fun because, after all, it is hockey. :-) read more

Attending a Mavs game is always a good time. Due to COVID, spectators were seated far apart so it was really nice not to have to get up and let people out of the isle every 5 minutes. Kansas City has a great hockey team. Our family is a regular at Royals and Chiefs games, and recently we've become fans of the Mavericks. Attending a game is a fun family event. High energy fills the room and I'm beginning to think it may be as much fun as a Chiefs game for a fraction of the price. Ticketmaster has a special for 4 ticket bundle for 20 dollars each. Free hot dog and drink come with each ticket. There is not a bad seat anywhere in the arena. There are a few things to know before attending a game. Having a cow (Maverick) bell is cool. Orange is the primary color. The best food is a little corner taco joint that sells amazing pulled pork and brisket loaded nachos bowl. I'm surprised the attendance is not better. I expect if they stay as good as last year word is going to spread. We will be attending many games. read more

I grew up watching hockey in Minnesota, so I have a very high view of the game. It has been a looooooong time since I have been to a hockey game, the last hockey game I went to was a college game when the Minnesota Gophers played UMD. I am delighted that the sport is so accessible in the Kansas City market. The tickets are reasonable in cost, the venue is excellent (intimate) and I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. It is family friendly and the Mavericks do a great job of keeping everyone involved during the entire time you are on site. The game I saw was a blow-out so we came away with a lot of bonus freebies - a free burger at Backyard Burger since the Mavs scored six goals. The team achieved another milestone so everyone got a coupon for a free 2 liter bottle of Orange Crush (the official soda of the Mavs), and at the end of the second period coupons for a free meal at Noodle & Company were dropped from the rafters. So the value for your money spent on the ticket is great. I really had fun at the game and look forward to going to another game soon. read more

If you are looking for a way to get your hockey fix in the metro, this is an awesome way to do it. There is sadly no NHL franchise anywhere to be found in KC. There was talk in the early stages of the Sprint Center's development of attracting an NHL hockey club, but these plans never materialized. Considering the abysmal track record in the area of attracting and then losing minor hockey clubs, I can see why financiers would be hesitant to give it a go. No matter though, as this club is more than satisfactory to fill this void in your life. Also, as of the time of this writing, they have the best record of any club in the ECHL and are VERY aggressive and physical on the ice. The Mavs are an affiliate team of the New York Islanders of the NHL, by the way. As such, you will see tons of people rocking Islanders jerseys and sweaters, which is a bit of an odd sight in the middle of the Midwest. Though I doubt our friends up in Brooklyn mind the additional support. That said, I was actually surprised at how accessible and fast things went for both entering and exiting, even on my most recent hockey night which was a sell out crowd of nearly 5800. You will also be happy to know you will not be raped nearly as hard for concessions as you are probably expecting. Seating at the arena is much more intimate because of it's size, and you get a fantastic viewpoint of the action on the ice below from almost every vantage point. Prices here are a fantastic value. They were offering a promotion for ten games for 100 bucks on the night of my visit, and the seats were good too! You seriously can't go wrong with that level of value for professional hockey. If I was still living in KC, I would of jumped on that one. As noted earlier, the team is very scrappy and aggressive, making watching the games even more exciting. Fans here are loud and enthusiastic. Some of them might not know the difference between icing and offsides, but they still blew the roof off the joint when the first Mavs goal hit the back of the net. We have the AHL club, the Chicago Wolves, not terribly far from where I live, which comes in handy when I do not feel like dropping 2-300 bucks to go to a Blackhawks game. Wolves games are cool, but Mavs games are much more fun by comparison. If you are a hockey fan living in the KC metro and have not checked this out yet, what the hell are you waiting for? Yes, I admit you can get the NHL Center Ice Package from Comcast/Xfinity, but nothing is going to beat the real thing. Just ask anyone who is a chronic masturbator. If you are just a sports fan living in KC but stick to only Royals and Chiefs, you should still give it a try. My guess is you will enjoy it. I have converted more than my fair share of folks over to the evil empire that is professional ice hockey. You could be my next victim. read more

The Mavs recently opened up their 3rd season in town... while I haven't had a chance to see them yet this season -- I'd recommend getting some tickets. Soon. The Mavs know how to put on a game for fans and they know how to get fans behind them. They're a minor league team, they know it, and they love how folks come from all around to see 'em. The venue is perfectly sized for this team -- just enough seats to ensure a full house, but still open enough so that tickets aren't scarce. There's a great intimacy in there -- and when you get a few hundred fans yelling and screaming for 3 periods straight, the enthusiasm is infectious. Outside of the actual hockey, there are plenty of great bonuses for the fans -- ranging from Chuck a Puck and food coupons dropping from the rafters... to free matches after the game featuring area juniors. Complaints are few and far between... the merch is a little high-dollar... the constant sponsorship of EVERYTHING grates after a while ("this power play / penalty kill / time out / puck leaving the ice is sponsored by...")... and yeah, sometimes the fans can get a little obnoxious. (The masses constantly yelling "you suck" to the goalie - gets old a little quick.) And, I'll leave you with a quick tip... try parking in the lot across 'the bridge' from the center. At least 3 times last season, it was open and accessible -- even though people in the main lots were parking way out in BFE. read more

I liked it so much, I returned from Iowa again this year to catch a game. Apparently the word is out because there were even more people here than my last visit in December of 2009. The arena is still in great shape. The concourses are really wide and easy to navigate. It's affordable (we payed $35 for some great mid-ice seats) and the games take place in a warm, engaging and family friendly atmosphere. It's great to see hockey making a great food-hold here in the Kansas City area. The quality of play tends to be a little sloppy but the players' enthusiasm is high and the atmosphere is electric with very energetic fans who can have a good time and maintain good manners. I'm from KC originally, so hockey isn't something I grew up with, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Kansas City Blades when they were in town, and I'm pleased to say that the Missouri Mavericks are just as good a time. I do not 100% understand hockey, but I get the jist, and Mavericks games are a great, low-pressure way to experience the sport. There are lots of giveaways and amusements during the game to keep everyone interested. The Independence Event Center is an excellent venue - I've been to four or five games, always sitting in different locations, and there's not a single seat I would say is bad. Really, almost impossible to give ANY hockey on a remotely professional level anything less than 4 stars, categorically. The theme song is repetitive and stale, but the WT respond to it, so I can see why the marketing people like it. No biggie. It's been a while since I've attended, so maybe the tired GIVE EM HELL HELL HELL HELL theme is gone now. lol. All in all, a good time, good venue, and very fair ticket prices. Much better bang for the buck than the local baseball or football...and the Mavericks are actually fairly decent. There's hockey in Kansas City! Get your fix at a Mavericks game, played in an accessible, clean and relatively intimate arena located in a major retail area in nearby Independence. Prices are very affordable, there's not a bad seat in the house (no nosebleeds), concessions are varied and reasonably priced and the hockey is not bad, played at what would be the equivalent of AA baseball. When I went in 2015, the Mavs were in the ECHL, affiliated with the New York Islanders and their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Minor-league hockey in the heartland, what fun! The Mavericks have been part of the Central Hockey League for a few years now & have built an active fan base in Independence. I've reviewed the IEC venue separately, but it's a perfect fit with the Mavs -- small enough to sell out fairly frequently, but large enough to bring the noise & the enthusiasm. The last time I was there, it was a sellout, and the Orange Army was rockin'! The team does a good job with events & giveaways & fan contests & whatnot, both on gameday and off days -- there are frequent "Meet the Team" events at local sponsor restaurants on off-nights, that kind of thing. Like all minor league teams, there's constant roster shuffle as players are moved up and down the ladder, but the (mostly) young athletes play their hearts out. I'm a fan... Let's Go Mavs! read more
