    KC Mavericks
    Jason R.

Kansas City has a great hockey team. Our family is a regular at Royals and Chiefs games, and recently we've become fans of the Mavericks. Attending a game is a fun family event. High energy fills the room and I'm beginning to think it may be as much fun as a Chiefs game for a fraction of the price. Ticketmaster has a special for 4 ticket bundle for 20 dollars each. Free hot dog and drink come with each ticket. There is not a bad seat anywhere in the arena. There are a few things to know before attending a game. Having a cow (Maverick) bell is cool. Orange is the primary color. The best food is a little corner taco joint that sells amazing pulled pork and brisket loaded nachos bowl. I'm surprised the attendance is not better. I expect if they stay as good as last year word is going to spread. We will be attending many games.

If you are looking for a way to get your hockey fix in the metro, this is an awesome way to do it. There is sadly no NHL franchise anywhere to be found in KC. There was talk in the early stages of the Sprint Center's development of attracting an NHL hockey club, but these plans never materialized. Considering the abysmal track record in the area of attracting and then losing minor hockey clubs, I can see why financiers would be hesitant to give it a go. No matter though, as this club is more than satisfactory to fill this void in your life. Also, as of the time of this writing, they have the best record of any club in the ECHL and are VERY aggressive and physical on the ice. The Mavs are an affiliate team of the New York Islanders of the NHL, by the way. As such, you will see tons of people rocking Islanders jerseys and sweaters, which is a bit of an odd sight in the middle of the Midwest. Though I doubt our friends up in Brooklyn mind the additional support. More on the affiliation with the Isles can be found here: http://islanders.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=770613 Games are played at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena, which is frankly located right in the middle of consumerism hell near the Independence Center. That said, I was actually surprised at how accessible and fast things went for both entering and exiting, even on my most recent hockey night which was a sell out crowd of nearly 5800. You will also be happy to know you will not be raped nearly as hard for concessions as you are probably expecting. Seating at the arena is much more intimate because of it's size, and you get a fantastic viewpoint of the action on the ice below from almost every vantage point. Prices here are a fantastic value. They were offering a promotion for ten games for 100 bucks on the night of my visit, and the seats were good too! You seriously can't go wrong with that level of value for professional hockey. If I was still living in KC, I would of jumped on that one. As noted earlier, the team is very scrappy and aggressive, making watching the games even more exciting. Fans here are loud and enthusiastic. Some of them might not know the difference between icing and offsides, but they still blew the roof off the joint when the first Mavs goal hit the back of the net. We have the AHL club, the Chicago Wolves, not terribly far from where I live, which comes in handy when I do not feel like dropping 2-300 bucks to go to a Blackhawks game. Wolves games are cool, but Mavs games are much more fun by comparison. If you are a hockey fan living in the KC metro and have not checked this out yet, what the hell are you waiting for? Yes, I admit you can get the NHL Center Ice Package from Comcast/Xfinity, but nothing is going to beat the real thing. Just ask anyone who is a chronic masturbator. If you are just a sports fan living in KC but stick to only Royals and Chiefs, you should still give it a try. My guess is you will enjoy it. I have converted more than my fair share of folks over to the evil empire that is professional ice hockey. You could be my next victim.

Wonderful venue to watch hockey. Downside is high concession prices and the non-stop sponsorship/advertising.

It took over two decades, and my brother and I came out to finalize this quest. The ballpark is in the middle of nowhere and is next door to the Chiefs football stadium. Although the park is very old, it was clean and appeared modern. They kept everything in good shape. Signage was good, the concourses were open, and seeing the fountains and waterfalls in the outfield was very pleasant. As you walk around the ballpark, there's a lot for families to do with their kids behind the outfield. Concessions for the most part were like any other ballpark fare. Prices were high, too. However, there were multiple free COLD water stations available. You can also bring your own food in and water (up to one liter) in a clear bag. I did buy a milkshake. The staffer did not know what a black and white was! If you don't know either, it's chocolate and vanilla together to make the shake. Very tasty. We liked the place and since the Phillies lost on Friday, we decided to come Saturday where they beat the bejeezus out of the Royals. One of JT Realmuto's home runs landed in the water in front of our section. Couldn't reach the ball, and if we tried to go in, then it's off to jail we go. We had to deal with some friendly ribbing, but not like in Philadelphia for other fans. When we purchased our tickets for Saturday, one of the volunteers overheard us talking about where to stand, and he was nice enough to check and said once the game started we could sit in a section where there were a lot of empty seats and pointed out specifically where to go. We got a row all to ourselves and we're able to give ourselves some room. The seats are not really meant for big guys. The largest video screen in baseball is set vertically with Roman column lighting behind. Didn't like it. Also did not care for having a large putting green in front of the video board. Visually unappealing especially with the beautiful water fountains and falls off each side. Overall, we had a great time at Kauffman Park and happy we went to the second game because we pulled off a win.

Sure, the team has had its ups and downs over the years, but win or lose, we always have a blast. The stadium is clean, easy to navigate, and packed with food and drink options that could distract even the most die-hard fan. If you're lucky enough to land in the Diamond Club, enjoy living like royalty--seriously, the waitstaff treats you like you're about to throw the first pitch. And if things take a turn and you end up at the first aid station, rest assured--you're in very good hands. The medical staff is amazing, professional, and so calm they can probably perform surgery during the seventh-inning stretch. Oh, and the Friday night fireworks? Unbelievable. Unparalleled. Worth the price of admission all on their own. Bottom line: good vibes, great team, and a stadium experience that hits it out of the park. Nice work, Royals.

The Chief fans have always been enthusiastic and yes they expect to win every game - well today the game has evolved and although it still exciting it's not the football I witnessed first hand in those days. Marty Schottenheimer lead the team then and with players like defensive end Neil Smith and linebacker Derrick Thomas, it's no surprise that Arrowhead Stadium would become one of the loudest stadiums in the game. I was very fortunate to have witnessed some of the greatest players in game playing under Schottenheimer's ten-season tenure as head coach. With names like Christian Okoye, Stephone Paige, Barry Word, Albert Lewis, Deron Cherry, and on special teams, Nick Lowery, who was then the most accurate kicker in NFL History. The unbelievable acquisition of quarterback Joe Montana and running back Marcus Allen validates for me I witnessed some of the best football ever. Since those days I've lived in a few big market cities and my loyalty has somewhat faded for the Kansas City Chiefs although I still love to watch them play, it's definitely one of the best NFL products still today and very entertaining although my interest has decreased somewhat being today the game is more about the brand than the game in my opinion unfortunately and I doubt that at todays prices I would be able to attend the number of games I did back then...

Dear Kansas City Chiefs Fan Experience Team,…read more I am writing to formally express my disappointment and frustration regarding how my wife and I were treated during the Chiefs vs. Lions Sunday Night Football game. What was meant to be a special birthday celebration for my wife turned into an upsetting and humiliating experience that left us feeling singled out, disrespected, and criminalized. We have proudly been season ticket holders for three years, seated in Section 337, Row 16, Seats 16 and 17. During the game, I was approached by a yellow-shirt staff member named Kay and a blue-uniformed security guard identified only by badge number 0001, who refused to provide her name despite multiple polite requests. They instructed me to stop standing against the wall behind my seat, citing a "fire hazard" and a risk of falling -- though the wall reaches up to my neck and presents no such danger. I immediately complied, but I passionately and respectfully asked why I was being told to move while others nearby were doing the exact same thing without any warning. Rather than provide a direct answer or enforce the rule consistently, Kay returned later and accused me of "mocking" her -- which was untrue and deeply insulting. I was passionate, respectful, and simply wanted a fair explanation. After the situation seemed to settle, I went down to use the restroom and was on my way to get a drink when I noticed several members of the security team huddled together. I approached guard 0001 again to ask why no one else was being held to the same standard. Without warning or justification, and claiming that I stood against the wall a third time (which is false), she decided to eject both my wife and me from the stadium As my wife gathered her belongings, security guard David informed her she needed to meet me downstairs because we were being removed. At that point, several surrounding fans spoke up in our defense, expressing their agreement that we had been treated unfairly and that the situation was mishandled. What made this incident even more distressing was the way it escalated -- we were surrounded and escorted out by multiple officers as if we posed a threat. I am a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and live with PTSD, and the way this situation was handled caused significant emotional distress. I was not confrontational, disrespectful, or intoxicated -- I simply wanted to understand why I was being treated differently from others in the same section. Adding to the confusion and frustration, I have attached photos taken from my seat showing multiple other fans standing along the wall -- and even Kay herself standing in the same location she claimed was a "safety and fire hazard." This further reinforces the inconsistency and unfairness of how this situation was handled. This experience has left a lasting negative impression on what should have been a positive night of celebration. I take great pride in supporting the Chiefs organization and investing in season tickets year after year, but this incident does not reflect the values of fairness, respect, and integrity that the organization stands for. I am requesting a formal review of this incident and a written response regarding how this situation will be addressed. I would appreciate acknowledgment of how unfairly this was handled and assurance that steps will be taken to prevent other loyal fans from being treated in this manner in the future. Thank you for your time and understanding. I look forward to your response. Respectfully, Paul Panos Season Ticket Holder - Section 337, Row 16, Seats 16 & 17

Four of the seven teams to win multiple MLS Cups were part of the original 10 teams to begin the league's inaugural season in 1996. Again, Sporting Kansas City is one of those teams. Back then, they were known as the Kansas City Wiz and shortly thereafter, Wizards. Since 1996, Kansas City has finished first in its conference seven times and won the US Open Cup four times. The US Open Cup, by the way, is officially known as the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Hunt is the late founder and former owner of Sporting Kansas City, among other teams. The 2000 season has been Kansas City's best to date. Not only did the then-Wizards beat the Chicago Fire, 1-0, to win the 2000 MLS Cup, they also won the Supporters' Shield that same season (best regular-season record). Despite another half-dozen first-place conference finishes, Kansas City hasn't won the Supporters' Shield in any other season. Kansas City and Real Salt Lake made the record books during the 2013 MLS Cup championship game. Kansas City and Salt Lake had a penalty shootout that lasted 10 rounds, the longest in MLS Cup history. The entire classic is available to watch for free via MLS' YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jvd3PaVBw-A. The shootout begins at 2:12:10: https://youtu.be/Jvd3PaVBw-A?t=7930. The most accomplished player in team history is midfielder Preki (Predrag Radosavljevic). He's the only player to have won the MLS MVP Award twice (1997, 2003). Those were also the same years he was the MLS Scoring Champion (Golden Boot award). Goalkeeper Tony Meola is the only other Kansas City player to win the league's MVP Award (2000). Both Preki and Meola were on the 2000 championship team with Meola earning Man of the Match honors. That season, Meola was also named MLS' Goalkeeper of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year. To this day, Meola holds the MLS record for most shutouts in a single season with 16 in 2000. Twelve years later, another Kansas City goalie came close. Jimmy Nielsen had 15 shutouts in 2012. He's alone in second place.
