I had my first real massage and sauna session at Kanna Spa. I am officially hooked! I booked a last-minute appointment with Isidro and didn't really know what to expect, but he was amazing. Super attentive, warm hands, perfect pressure and very welcoming. He targeted all the knots in my neck, shoulders and back, while still giving a full-body massage. Such an excellent first experience. I initially scheduled 60 minutes but ended up extending it to 90 minutes during the session lol. I seriously didn't want it to end. He worked nonstop. I don't even know how he wasn't tired. We started at 6:45pm and finished close to 8:45pm, so he even gave me extra time. I almost fell asleep at the end when he told me to relax and take my time getting up. From start to finish, everyone we spoke to and received spa services from was amazing. My sister opted for a spa day before her wedding instead of doing a bachelorette party. Her only request was a hydro facial and deep tissue massage at the same place. I found this spa offered both services and my mom and I decided to take her here. My mom called to schedule the services and I called for more information about facials and recommendations for my eczema and sensitive skin. I found out the day we requested might not have an esthetician available, but Jenny and Tiffany texted us and really helped try to find a good time and day that would work. They figured out how to schedule both sets of services so they would work with just one esthetician and made it feel very smooth. I ended up getting the City Life facial with Kim plus the lymphatic drainage add on. She was wonderful!! From start to finish, I knew I was in great care. I also got a deep tissue massage with Sammy and she was just as wonderful. I left feeling incredibly relaxed and I know my sister did too. Upon arrival I was greeted by the aroma of a refreshing spa. Everything was in its place. The floors are very clean. Whoever maintains does a wonderful job! No dust to be found anywhere. I was offered water and restroom prior to beginning my forms. There is a waiting room with leather and wood elements. Which I love! Unfortunately the restrooms are shared with other businesses and required you to go out of the establishment and into a shared hallway. I was walked to my room for an intake, and reviewed the forms for clarity. The table was nice and warm. Linens were clean and laundered. There are robes available for you to change into along with a bench and bask for your belongings. I had a massage from Luis. Asked for a blend. Firm pressure on back and shoulders and medium to light everywhere else. He absolutely did just that. My hour session seems like it was a 90. He focused on areas I requested and often checked if pressure was okay. I originally request for a scalp treatment with my 60 which would make it a 90 minute session. However, it was somehow booked incorrectly. I didn't make a fuss of it. But Luis did provide a decent scalp massage during the 60. I added in the lemon grass and coconut oil. I took my partner for his birthday to get a couples detoxify massage and we had a wonderful experience. Both of our masseuse's were very accommodating and friendly, really sensitive to our needs, asking a lot of questions and making us feel very comfortable. It was very relaxing. Inside the music was great. The lighting was good, it smelled nice, and overall just a really fantastic experience. I don't know why I waited so long to try this place. When I spoke to Jenny on the phone, she was very helpful and informative in helping me decide on a treatment. The spa is not very big but has a very tranquil vibe. I loved the infrared sauna. I started sweating within the first 10 mins. Tiffany was my therapist and she was sweet, friendly, and very skillful. I really enjoyed my massage. After that, I did the vibration plate and that was fun. I had such a good experience I went back 2 weeks later with my partner. I really like this place. I don't go often but once in a while I'll mess up my neck, back etc and I head on over to get fixed up. This weekend I went off-roading and after 5 or 6 hours of driving on rough trails my neck and back were killing me. So today I called & made an apt for a massage and some cupping. I am always happy with the services and they do have specials so if you join their email list, they have last minute spaces they try to fill and that's where your value is! Lindsay at the front desk was so accommodating and nice! Making an appointment over the phone was easy. Day of comes and was told to come 15 minutes early as I was a new client well I came 15 mins early and the door was locked. Odd since I knew there was an appointment before mine. I walked around the back because maybe there was another entrance. There wasn't, I come back and call the spa. Lady picks up and says she will text them but also tells me my appointment isn't for another hour which was incorrect and kept trying to fight me on it. Finally she apologizes and was like oh I was looking at the wrong thing you are correct. Not a great start for me. Finally Lindsay comes out from another suite to let us in. Things go good until we get out of the sauna, we were told there would be cold towels there were not. Then its time for the massage. Jose was super knowledgable and gave me a lot of tips and tricks, my body felt greay but my mind was not relaxed after that massage as he talked the entire time. Well I had paid for cupping and never recieved that service during the massage. I had to say something to Linsday where she goes to ask Jose about this. Jose comes and tells me my only options were to do it right now or they will comp it next time. At this point in time I did not really wanna come back here. I agreed to get the cupping done right then as I had never done it before and wanted to experience it. Well the cupping was amazing! My favorite part of the day. I was so relaxed after it was done like a million times more then that massage realxed me. I would do cupping again. Also in our package we got 10 mins on the vibration plate. Ladies if anyone ever puts an intensity of 1 on that thing for you just bump it up. You should never be at a 1 beginner or not. Its supposed to feel like your legs are itchy because its moving all that stagnant fluid around. They ended up comping us the vibration plate $15 for the inconviences we endured of me not getting cupping done during my massage. I called Kanna Spa to schedule an appointment. I spoke with Tiffany and she was very friendly. I told her my ideal date and time, which was late in the evening and the next day. She wanted to confirm with the massage therapist to see if they can extend their shift to accommodate me. Tiffany called me back within 10 minutes and I was instantly scheduled. The process was extremely smooth, which was amazing! The next day, I visited Kanna Spa on 12/2/23 for a 60-minute relaxation massage ($120). The moment I stepped foot into the salon, I was immediately immersed in a calm and soothing atmosphere. I checked in at the front desk, where I filled paperwork on my preferences for the service, such as what areas I want more focus on, what areas I want to avoid, if I wanted a silent appointment or not, etc. This made my appointment feel much more customized and catered to my personal desires. My massage therapist was Isidro. Before beginning, we did a mini-consultation to go over my requests and to clarify any questions or concerns I had. I loved how he ensured the bed was warm and verified if the headrest was at the proper height prior to starting to avoid any discomfort. During my massage, Isidro would occasionally check in to see if the pressure was too vigorous or not. However, that was never the case. The massage itself was so extremely relaxing that I caught myself drifting asleep. Not to mention, the warm bed and peaceful music contributed to the serene environment. After my appointment, Isidro offered me water and briefly discussed what he analyzed while massaging me. Going over what he observed, I am now aware of what muscles tend to be tense and how I can prevent further pain in that region. My friends and I booked 60 minute massages at Kanna for a weekend birthday celebration. Scheduling: Very simple! I left a voicemail about a week prior to the date we wanted. Tiffany, the owner, called back within a few hours. She was very accommodating for our group of 4. Spa: Conveniently located near downtown San Mateo with a shockingly ample amount of parking space available. The spa is located on the 2nd floor near a dental office. Lobby was clean and peaceful. They ask you to fill out a client form, where you indicate pressure preference (light, normal, hard) and areas to focus on or avoid. We did have to wait a little bit after the check-in process before our masseuses led us to our individual rooms. Massage: My masseuse did an amazing job! I wish I got her name. My friends also enjoyed their massages. We appreciated the hot towels to quickly clean up any residual oil prior to getting dressed. Knocking off one star because the bathrooms were outside of the salon and down the hall of a different business. We all agreed the bathroom stall was very small and cramped. First impressions are everything - I was disappointed with the service when I walked in as it was not welcoming at all. The staff member at the front desk was not friendly and immediately asked me if my name was Debbie (which it's not). I told her my name and that I had an appointment for a massage and facial at 10am. She seemed to have trouble locating it on her computer and asked me again if i was sure my name wasn't Debbie lol. She started mumbling a bit and I wasn't clear if she was talking to me and when I asked her to repeat what she said, she curtly told me someone will be right with me so I took a seat. Actual Debbie arrived and the staff member's demeanor was a complete switch and she was so friendly to her. Another staff member walked by me and said I'd have to fill out some forms since I was a new client, and literally gave me the clipboard of form + a pen and walked away while saying I don't know who is doing your massage. Behind the front desk, I could hear the first staff member I interacted with, talking to another staff member saying No i'm not doing Maya's facial and repeated it a few times in a rude tone. I was left in reception with no idea of who was going to help me and I almost felt like walking out at that point. This was a Mother's Day gift from my husband and I just was so surprised with this experience so far. I filled out my forms and I was sitting alone in the waiting area and a friendly voice apologized for the wait and asked if I was Maya. Tiffany let me know she was going to be doing my massage, and her demeanor was very sweet and welcoming. I felt relieved that not all of the staff members were as unwelcoming as those I encountered when I first arrived to the spa. I had a wonderful massage with Tiffany and she nailed the perfect pressure during my massage. Right after my massage, I had a facial with Luba and this was my first facial ever. Luba walked me through each of the steps and provided details on the benefits of each step, which was very helpful. I'm pretty sure I was so relaxed from the massage that I fell asleep during part of the facial with Luba, which was also very relaxing as she was massaging and moisturizing my face. First time clients here! I called after 9 pm one evening to check if Kanna spa could accommodate a party of 7 who were hoping to get facials and massages, on a Saturday, in a week and a half. Jenny who spoke with me was so kind, professional, and caring. I really did not have high hopes that we could get in, luckily we were able to book two facials and 7 massages for our bridal party! The communication and customer service was top notch. We received phone calls to verify, text messages and emails detailing all of the reservations. Unfortunately, they had double booked some time slots but asked if we were alright pushing the reservations by 30 minutes, which worked out perfectly (we got to enjoy our surprise lunch with the bride a little longer). After everyone was done with their services, it was amusing to watch each of us stumble into the waiting area because the masseuses were experts! Overall: 4.5/5 I've been here twice and both were very different experiences but the professionalism was consistent. The masseues greet you at the lobby, take you to your room, then consult with you on any focus/pain areas and preferred pressure. When you enter the room, the music and ambiance immediately puts you into a relaxed state. The first time I was here, it was in January when COVID restrictions didn't allow couple massages so I had an individual massage in a separate room from my fiance. The massage was good but nothing memorable. The second time I came here was last weekend, and they allowed couple massages as long as both individuals wear masks the entire time. I had Tiffany who had a contagious bubbly personality. She also used a very unique technique but her hand movements/timing of her flow was on point & felt so natural. She was really in tune with reading my body and worked on my stubborn knots for the majority of the time but also discovered other knots I didn't feel or expect to find in certain areas. Had my first massage with Isidro at Kanna Spa today. Phenomenal experience. The questionnaire asks all of the usual health questions, but even how much communication (versus silence) you want. Isidro was incredible in every way. Just enough communication. Clarification on pressure and depth of muscle work before we started, and an absolutely optimal amount of use of hands when so many other massage therapists I have gone to seem to rely on elbows. In other words, he worked. Amazing intuition and precision and communication. I was getting massages weekly before COVID, and have been trying a lot of practitioners out this past year. He was very in tune with what you want, he checked-in now and then (if you are OK with that) to make sure the pressure was okay, and he would adjust with precision! I came here for my first massage ever and absolutely loved my experience. Tiffany was professional and listened to what I needed from her. My wedding was 2 days after the massage so I didn't want to be sore and Tiffany went the perfect amount relieving the tons of stress I had in my shoulders and back while still leaving me refreshed and relaxed. The foot massage is a complete waste of money. Bedside manners were fine, and they were accommodating enough to requests however the actual foot massage aspect of the service was very very disappointing. Not enough pressure or time spent on the feet and nothing at the ankles let alone calves. Half the time was spent wrapping the feet in towels/walking around the room getting supplies. Also I wanted to leave without a tip considering I had already wasted money on the service, but was literally stopped saying I had to leave a tip. Really disappointed and would not come again for any of their other services either. I thought I would be paying for the bedside manners and luxury feel on TOP of a good massage but looks like they sacrifice their massage quality for the tips. Please go somewhere else if you want a real massage. In fact, the foot massage cost more than a prenatal massage! I was so excited to finally get a massage! It was pretty easy to request for an appointment online. Jenny called me a few hours later to schedule an appointment. I felt a bit uncomfortable because she brought up bringing cash for tips more than twice. I was informed again about tipping when confirming my appointment. The waiting room was very nice and relaxing. My masseuse was Kanani. She was very kind, but I had so much difficulty hearing her. She was quite soft spoken and her mask muffled her voice. This was probably the most awkward massage I've ever had. The flow felt really weird and I was so stressed throughout the massage. She would have me prop one leg up when I was on my right, but both legs down when I was on my left. The massage I got on my left side felt so different than my right side. While she was massaging me with one hand, she would rest her other hand on my hip as if I was the massage table. Her resting hand kept digging into my rib cage. At the end of the appointment, I was drenched in massage oil with no towels to wipe down. For a prenatal massage, this was very uncomfortable and stressful. She was applying a lot of pressure on areas she said would need lighter pressure. Overall, my experience felt very awkward. For $110, I expected a better experience. read more

I believe this place is a nice relaxation bar where they can work on your special spots if needed, but you got to be careful with the extra pricing of every other little service. I was not impressed with that. The masseuse were good and did their job correctly. I've had others where the service includes hot rocks and sauna included with a service and this did not. We saw a few places on Yelp (and their scary reviews) but decided to go back to a place we already knew....Kanna Spa. We get 60 minute massages (closer to home) about once a month, so this time we opted for a 90 minute couples massage. It was amazing! First time I came here a few months ago, I was pretty disappointed with the massage I received when I went with my husband for a couple's massage. The lady basically patted me down gently, but for some reason applied very strong pressure on my quads. It wasn't a balanced massage at all, but the receptionist at the time was so awesome and welcoming. Today was my 2nd time here and it was the COMPLETE OPPOSITE haha! I got there and the door was locked so I called them, but the lady on the phone didn't sound professional at all because she didn't even apologize for making me wait outside and basically said "you're too early." ...but I was just 15min early? She actually thanked me for being early! Her massage was 100x better than my first experience here! Her strokes matched with the peaceful melody of the music. She applied medium to deep pressure as I mentioned on my paper.
