Sad, but oddly comforting, to read stories about "Old Man Kane." I had a similar experience a number of years back (not the 30 in another review, but more than 10; can't recall). I had purchased milky spore that I didn't end up using. I didn't have a receipt, so I called ahead and asked if I could return it, even for a store credit. The woman on the phone said yes. I arrived and went to the desk to complete my return, only to be unlucky enough to get Mr. Kane. He looked at me suspiciously and asked where my receipt was. I explained what one of his reps said on the phone. His response, literally in a rage, was, "who, tell me their name." He turned and glared at the women working at the cashier kiosk. None of them dared speak up. He turned to me and yelled (and I mean yelled), "you're a liar; you didn't call." I was in such shock, I just turned and walked out. Getting go my car, a couple approached me and expressed shock at how I was treated. I had no words. Like others, I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER return. What an awful excuse for a human being. read more

I have been to Kane's on several occasions- last year I went in the fall and got some excellent quality pumpkins there. Uniform size, good shape, fresh- perfect for carving. I went there today to get some vegetable plants and pots. I found the pots quickly- very reasonably priced according to their materials (ceramic, glass, plastic, etc) and a huge variety of shapes and sizes. However, I did leave disappointed with the vegetable selection. I figured that by this time of year they would have a huge selection, but the tomatoes and peppers were limited to two tables, surrounded by rows and rows of annual and perennial flowers. There were no heirloom tomatoes, just your typical Big Boy, Early Girl, etc. I did ask an employee if they had any heirlooms and he pointed me to the row where I had just been looking and said he thought they had Brandywines, but I combed the row and did not see a single one. Their pepper selection was bizarre- over 10 varieties of hot peppers, but only green Bell and Cubanelles for sweet peppers. I was hoping that with a store as huge as this one that I would find some unique heirloom pepper and tomato plants, but alas, there were none to be found. Also, just FYI, there is a $10 minimum on credit/debit cards, but I have always spent more than that there so it has never been an issue for me. read more

Absolutely worst customer service ever. I was actually yelled at and called a liar when I tried returning a plant that looked sick after only one day from purchase. When I pointed out that I had the receipt and couldn't possibly lie about the date the man said he didn't care and continued to call me a liar. I was so shocked I just left and will never go back. I've given them a lot of business in the past and this is how they treat me the first time I return something? I don't know how they stay in business. read more

Although I have shopped at Kane's off and on for the past 25 years I often wondered why I would stop and then come back again and then I realized it was 3 fold. First the quality is always changing. You must be very careful with what you purchase there. Although their selection is good, and their prices can be good also. However a low price doesn't mean a great deal if the plant doesn't survive. Second, the service in particular the older gentleman can be rude to his employees and customers. I was in there today when I saw him yelling at two customers who were complaining to him about their check out experience. This was unacceptable and if I had been those customers I would have returned my items and left. I also Third, The check out was handled by about 5 different people and in a careless manner. You have to watch and add everything carefully yourself before you check out. The cash receipt doesn't specify plants or purchases when you check out so you have nothing to compare to later. I am not going back. I would rather pay a little more and be treated with a little dignity. I will never forget those women being humiliated by that man. read more

If you have more of a thumb nose...than a green thumb go buy a plastic plant. Kane's is not for you because, Kane's is home.Various greenhouses serve an unreal variety from annuals to cacti. They sell THE BEST organic fertilizer EVER (Neptune's Harvest) and for a fair price as well . Worth a shop or even a quick walk through to remind you planting can be perfected. read more

Lacks Basic Customer Respect I have been going to Kane's for years, and just bought over $100 worth of perennials bedding plant, etc... One of the $5 plants out of all of them took a nosedive, so I called, asking about how they handle this...I said I thought the plant look diseased. What I got back was a clear response that they would not exchange it; that all their plants are in great shape when sold. The manager said I could bring it back, but when I asked why I would do that if they would not allow an exchange, he said so he could show me that whatever was wrong was not their fault...but could because of over/unerwatering, etc... OK...so maybe it was not their fault, but customer relations 101 teaches that you work WITH customers - not against them. I could not believe this guys attitude...ahh well, I guess I will spend a little more buying plants elsewhere going forward. I am not expecting to become friends with these guys, but I do expect to be given a bit of benefit of doubt with respect. read more

This is a good place but it would be a great place if you could get rid of the crabby old lady at the front. After she offended me she walked away ? Everyone else was so inviting and pleasant. REMEMBER KANES......costumer service is a large part of your sales and that's why we come to you rather than a lowes or Home Depot. Horrible! I purchased over 100 succulents and 100 clay pots for my daughters wedding favors and 3 days later over half of them were dead! I brought them back to show them and the owner and his son started yelling over my voice so I couldn't speak! They kept yelling "no guarantees lady" honestly I thought they would at least try to make it right! Spent $350.00 and ended up having to go someplace else and buy them all over again. Turns out they were all diseased! ALL of them were dead within 5 days total! Please DON'T buy from these rude people. read more

My mother told me a story many times over the years, but today is the day I realized the sad truth in her tale. When I was a little girl, my parents took me plant shopping with them at Kane's. My mom recounted that I reached down to touch a pretty flower and the owner yelled at me until I cried. After that day, my mother never wanted to go back because I did nothing wrong and didn't need to be berated by a man with a bad temper. Today, forty years later, I was shopping at Kane's as I have many times. I bought $70 worth of flowers and went home to plant the tray of my red impatiens. I put one plant into the soil and it tipped over. I tried and tried, but to no avail; the plants were too tall to hold their weight. I drove back and explained what happened to an older gentleman. I asked if I could simply get shorter ones so they wouldn't tip. He said, "No. The policy is no returns." I didn't want to return, I just wanted shorter plants, and then he said I "damaged them" and it was my fault. He then informed me that I had to cut them -- cut all the color off of them -- and replant them to make them stand up. I laughed, dropped the tray on the ground and went into the store. There, I was met with, "Well, he's the owner, so I can't do anything." HE IS THE OWNER??? THE RUDE OLDER GENTLEMAN OWNS KANE'S??? I could not believe an owner would not help a customer and would be that rude. It was baffling. I went back into the greenhouse, picked a shorter tray of red impatiens and paid another $20. I looked around for my first tray of them and they were gone. I asked where my "damaged plants" were and was told that he had put them back to resell. Damaged plants! I could not believe it. I asked a young employee to tell him that I wanted my plants back since I paid for them and the owner couldn't even be bothered to bring them back to me himself. That coward ought to be ashamed. You DO NOT treat paying customers that way. My mother passed away from cancer eight years ago. The truth is that because she knew she was dying, she designed her own stone so that the impatiens that she loved so much wouldn't block the words on her grave stone. My father and I bought Kane's impatiens and planted them there the first spring after she died. NEVER AGAIN WILL I PLACE KANE'S FLOWERS AT MY MOTHER'S GRAVE. Never. This thought sickens me. So, Mom, I am sorry I underestimated this man's long-lasting meanness. I will not plant his flowers anywhere near your grave ever again. You deserve better. And to all paying customers out there, you deserve better too. read more

Love this place :) Has everything you need for all of your gardening/plant needs, and then some. Plants seem much more lively and bountiful as opposed to some other places. Employees are very informative & helpful as well. Will always be returning; hope to start a veggie garden soon and revamp flower garden :) read more

This place gets 5 stars for the variety and the prices but really misses in the customer service department - what a cranky bunch! I come here often and I can't say that I have ever received warm and friendly service from anyone - it appears everyone there hates their jobs and tolerates the customers because they have to. No one ever smiles or greets you. I have witnessed the owner yelling at or being verbally abusive to his employees on several occasions so I guess that's why. And forget calling them and getting any help if they're busy - they won't bother to answer your questions (as just happened to me not 5 minutes ago. I called to ask a price on a product and was told with a sigh of exasperation, "I have no idea"). I will still keep coming here because of the selection but it's not my favorite place to shop. It's only getting two stars because of he customer service. Seriously the owner ( old white guy) is super rude. He made me feel incredibly uncomfortable and treated me like I was scum. I'm a medical professional, educated person and as a human deserve to be treated with more respect. I had an issue with a purchase made( I accidentally used the wrong card) and he made his into such a huge deal( purchase was not declined or anything). He yelled at me, asked me if I had stolen the card rudely , made accusations and made me feel awful in front of people. I spent over 150$ that day and he treated me like he could care less about the business. I felt like returning everything but I didn't want to deal with him anymore. If it wasn't for that, they do have a nice selection but why support a business where the owner treats customers like crap and has a nasty attitude. I understand your old and probably miserable but treating customers right is like business 101 common sense!! read more

I have always bought my items from Kanes. Good product, great selection. However, I have had problems with their customer service. Let me preface by saying I understand completely that they are crazy busy, but staff the operation accordingly. I have been in all kinds of customer service for 10 years, so I will review with pragmatism. I came in with four simple questions. I found someone who walked to the appropriate section with me and hurriedly answered my first two, sort of. He kept talking over me and only partially answered. THEN he told me sorry but he is busy and straight up walked away. Ok.... so I found someone else. First, turned out the first gentleman really wasnt listening because he took me to the incorrect section, not even close. He showed me products that would have damaged the plants, as they were not the correct product. The second man who helped me also was rushing and seemed annoyed that I had more than one question. While he showed me the proper product, he too walked away from me. I seriously had to speed walk after him and shout my questions, which he answered until he got back to where I found him initially, and started helping other customers with a huge smile and friendly attitude. Not cool. I am a paying customer, and even if I was not, I was polite and knew exactly what I needed to ask. I dont enjoy, and I would imagine the same goes for most people, being swept aside. I am not sure if its because my cart wasnt chock full like the other customers who received positive and helpful customer service, or what their reasoning could possibly be. Be staffed enough to make sure each customer feels appreciated, no one wants to feel dismissed and as if they are not deserving of good customer service. read more

I just called to ask if a certain shrub was in stock. The woman who answered was extremely rude and told me, "it was too hot and busy for anyone to look into it and I should drive down and look myself" clearly the customers time is far less valuable then the employees! when I started to respond to see if there was a better time I could call back, she hung up on me. good prices and selection...TERRIBLE customer service! I had to laugh when I read the other reviews about the terrible customer service...I'm glad to know it wasn't just me who experienced it! They were SO RUDE...I encountered two employees while I was there. One was a woman at the inside, front desk. And the other a man. Not sure if they were owners, or just sales people...but no personality, rude, not friendly. Among other things, i had several large shrubs at the check out and no one offered to get me a cart; even though it was super slow...i had to go find one myself and load my plants. I've never experienced such a lack of customer service before. We as customers have choice in where we shop...I'd rather pay a little more somewhere else and leave feeling like I was appreciated. I've been going to Kane's for many years. In the past couple of years, I have had some bad luck with their flowering plants. On their receipts, they do not itemize, so you can't return any plants that might die. Actually, a big problem for me, as you leave it in their hands for them to tell you the total. When you leave, you really have no idea how much you have spent (especially when you have a hefty order). Most of their plants have no stickers on them. Their help there is horrific......not helpful at all with no social skills. I'll go to Home Depot from now on. read more

Well, while I have purchased plants from them in the past, I phoned them to order 55 small plants for shower favors. The man was not at all helpful, would not discount for an order of 55 plants, and would not even let me pay and order them 6 weeks in advance of needing them." I have been buying plants for 10-12 years from Kane's but this last time was most disappointing. I bought 12 plants all of which died within one week. 10 of them were put in the entranceway of my condo complex with the hope that next year I could get a budget of $10-$20,000 for landscape improvements. Obviously, now both Kane's and I look like fools. I was told just now that their perennials are NOT guaranteed. I was also told by another nursery, when I described the appearnace of the plants when I bought them, that they were already dying. Very disappointed with Kane's. Flowers and plants are good...I have purchased from Kane's year round until yesterday. Had a VERY disappointing customer service experience...rude cashier, no one willing to assist and basically left the plants I picked out at the front door without purchasing.... these days a little friendly customer service goes a long way...I WILL NOT BE BACK HERE....went to Home Depot Garden Center right after and got plants that were fresh, not heat stroked by the greenhouses and received some friendly customer service...too many businesses need and want your business these days that you don't have to be satisfied with rude employees that are unwilling to help....good riddens! read more

Terrible customer service. I called to see if they had an Oak Leaf Hydrangea and the salesperson said yes they had them but that they sold a lot over the weekend and she had "no idea" if they have any left. Said I would have to come down and look. Now I am coming down from Maine to get on for my mother in law and I don't have time to go on a scavenger hunt for something they should clearly be able to do. The woman on the phone was rude and couldn't get rid of me fast enough. I am going to Northeast Nursery in Peabody who looked and told me about several varieties they had. read more

I have been coming to kanes since I was a child and put pennies in the fountain, 40 yrs later I still enjoy shopping here. The flowers and plants are always superb, and prices are reasonable. We've purchased our hanging impatiens from Kanes for 20 years. This year, all 8 of our plants died within 2-3 weeks of purchase. The lady at the front counter would do nothing to help us---- no exchange, no refund. Obviously they don't stand behind their plants. BAD customer service!! I will never shop here again. I've been shopped here for over 10 years, but the last time I was in this store. The owners were inexcusibly rude. I was unaware they had a $10 minimum for debit/credit card purchases. When I didn't have the cash or the desire to purchase anything else. I wasn't indignant about it. I just said okay. After last year I would have given this rating five stars since the hanging plants we purchased were gorgeous and lasted all season long. Unfortunately this year is a different story. Based on last year's experience we purchased four more hanging plants on May 30th, what a difference a year makes! Today two plants lovely, full and thriving. Two identical plants same location and care are almost dead and when I called Kane's to find out about any guarantee, I was very disappointed with the reply. Both this year and last we spent over three hundred dollars on floral plants and tomato plants. Last year tomato plants were great and so far this year they seem to be thriving. I just hope they do not meet the same fate as one-half my hanging plants. Think I will not make a return trip next year sorry to say. read more

I bought 4 pots of flowers on 05/27/13 and plan them right away to my front yard. The flowers are watered everyday. I discovered that two of them are dying. I drove to the shop and talked to the sale guy. He told me to bring them for the exchange. When I bring the flowers back, the manager of the shop refuses to exchange them. He also has a very rude manner. I told him these do not cost that much and he would be able to keep me as a customer and he is saying that HE DOES NOT NEED CUSTOMERS. This is going to be my last time in this shop and would like everyone to be aware of this. Home Depot or Lowes would replace the dead/dying flowers immediately. Even the their plants/flowers are a little better than Home Depot or Lowes, but we also have to pay higher prices for it. read more

Nice big place with very few friendly people. I bought $400. worth of point-setters. 14 total. all were treated exactly the same but 3 died the very next day. I took a picture for them and was told i did something wrong to those 3 plants because their flowers do not die. so rude. All i was asking was for them to be replaced. I was told i could bring the plants back for exchange but a photo would not work. Unfortunately one of my employees had thrown them out. This past year I have spent over $4000. at Kanes for my business. I will never return. read more

The prices at Kane's are great. I've been buying there for years. I just found out that they don't stand behind their products though. Between veggies and bushes and hanging plants for teacher gifts and others, I have bought at least 75 items from them. I bought 2 hanging plants on Mother's day and they were dead the next day. The woman said "you killed them. We don't accept ANY returns or give refunds or credits for ANY REASON". She didn't even ask what plants. She told me what they were, so obviously she knew there was a problem with them. BUYER BEWARE. The plants that live are nice though. read more

The 2 I gave my mother wilted and died within 24 hours The woman said " You killed them. You can't prove they were dead!" She was very rude. Buyer Beware!!! Do not buy anything here! I bought some pots for my flowers, and when I got home I realized the plants would not fit. I tried to return them and was flat out refused even though I had my receipts. The owner would not even allow me to exchange them! When I mentioned that their return policy did not specify anything about items being nonrefundable I was told, and I quote "to get out, and that one lousy customer wouldn't change his ability to do business".
