I was just in for Mother's Day picking up some plants and cannot believe the way I was just treated. The older man first tried to ridicule me when I asked a question about watering and then got in my face and yelled at me when I asked him about whether one of the plants could stay indoors. Then, as I was leaving the store, he asked me for my last name, as if the credit card I gave him wasn't mine. Unbelievable!! Nice way to treat a mother on Mother's Day, let alone another human being. The last time I was in there, he was being rude to one of his workers. I'm disgusted, and even though it is close to where I live, I will never shop in there again. I love Kane's because I love getting new indoor plants and considering I have over 100+ different plants, it's often difficult finding something new and interesting, which is why I love Kane's, because I always find something new that I don't already have. I love their large greenhouse full of tropicals, succulents, cactus, flowers, trees and more.. it's heaven.. and there's even adorable cats that follow you around the store. The staff were friendly and very helpful. I got answers to all my questions and each time I've been there it's always been a wonderful and pleasant experience. The place is HUGE, has multiple greenhouses as well as trees, shrubs, etc outdoors, and plenty of parking. I haven't bought soil or supplies here, but for plants their prices seem to be lower than anywhere else. read more

These people are rude and ignorant. I was checking out 5 huge mandavilla that I wanted to buy. Dry leaves were falling from them. Then this old bald man comes outside yelling at me to sweep up that mess! He so so loud,people were watching in horror. I said excuse me? He yells" their all the same!" Buy them or leave! So ignorant! So embarrassing to say the least. The crabby old lady in the front is the same way!When I got to the register, I said " that grouchy old man Mr Kane is a real Ass. I am really into plants. This place has a very strong selection of houseplants. Strongest in the area. I think prices are very competitive. Owner is friendly and gives good advice. Not fancy, not pretentious. Cats are cute. Greenhouse is open year round and in February is basically heaven. If you want to step up your houseplant game from what you see at Trader Joe's or Home Depot, this is your spot. read more

Do NOT purchase anything here..you might as well bury dollar bills in the ground.   In a weak moment purchased a shrub, tried to return it within 6 days as leaves got brown and crispy.   Owner was rude, belligerent, accusatory without an ounce of listening skills.   I have been a gardener for 35 years, know how to take care of plants, use a hygrometer to help gage watering, etc.  and have NEVER had this happen.  All the owner could yell was "Hey Lady, we don't guarantee anything".   Certainly no guarantee of courtesy or respect or knowledge of plant material.   Don't waste your time, money or effort with this substandard plant pushing outfit. read more

I adore this store. It's like a tropical wonderland. I am exceptionally budget minded and this shop is priced fairly. I live in Boston and I make special trips to the Northshore to get plants because the florists in my own neighborhood are absurd. The plants at Kane's are brimming with good health and happiness. My thumb is black but every plant I've bought from Kane's has been hearty and long lasting. The plants at Home Depot? Dried up little turds. Kane's even has a friendly furry cat friend that'll follow you around the greenhouse as you shop if he likes your vibe. His presence is a major shopping incentive. Oh, and forget about Home Depot for garden supplies. Ocean State JOb lot has unbeatable prices. Love, love, love this place. Wish they had more cats. And herbs. read more

I have been buying perennials from here for 3 years. Every single plant has thrived! Of course I am a direction follower, I read the tag on the plant and do as suggested. The staff is great, but sometimes it's so busy there's just not enough help. I always seek out this one fellow, he's short and slim, blonde hair, older but not old, (That's all relative I suppose) , He is extremely knowledgeable!!!! I agree with Kat H. Go to Kane's for your plants but then hit up Lowe's or Home Depot for your supplies. The quality of the plants is very good. I've bought houseplants, flowers and vegetable plants here. The impatiens I bought in the spring are still flourishing and I just picked my first cucumber from the tiny plant I bought at the same time. I also bought two tomato plants here and later I bought one at Lowe's and the plants from Kane's are doing much better and have a lot more tomatoes on them. They have a varied cactus selection, from large to tiny. And don't foget to explore the greenhouse out back! Lots of good stuff out there too. read more

Really nice place. They had a good selection of plants (we focused on indoor plants) that were of good quality and very reasonable prices. Also a lot of interesting pots and everything else, also good prices. Only issue was that it was hard to find someone to ask questions of and few of the plants were labeled with names or instructions. As an out of town visitor, the car came to a screeching halt when I spied the greenhouses and colorful mum display at Kanes. Had to go in and check it out. Let me tell you, that was a stop worth making, even though I couldn't buy much to bring back on the plane. Nice Halloween department, acres of potted mums in several sizes and in a full color selection to boot. Their bulb offerings were spectacular, just like a walk through a catalog. Kat H and Stacey M have it right - Kane's is great if you're looking for high-quality plants that last. That is, unless you have a husband who likes to run them over with the lawnmower. In that case, they probably won't last. I bought beautiful lavender plants there in the spring, but alas, they are no longer. Sigh. I usually get my Christmas tree at Kane's too, because they have a lot of nice trees to choose from and they inevitably last through the season without losing all of their godforsaken needles. They have a pretty good selection of wreaths and kissing balls too, both decorated and plain. Kane's is indeed expensive, but you get what you pay for. read more

Just went down to Kanes to buy some fuschias. They have lovely plants and I have bought there for years. I won't be going back. No attempt to control the number of people in the store or manage the direction people were walking. Very crowded with people and narrow aisles. Two almost invisible arrows at the front but easily missed. The cashiers were surly (not unusual). No attempt at contactless credit card transactions; expected everyone to sign with one pen. Cashiers did not have masks or gloves or make any attempt to clean the pen--were annoyed when I did it. This business is not customer friendly or responsible. No attempt to follow the rules or keep customers safe. read more

We purchased a hanging plant from this store and it was dried out and wouldn't take water. The water just ran straight through. We returned the plant and before we could even explain, some old lady began yelling at us and saying we never watered it. Luckily another gentleman came up and took over the situation. We explained that we weren't looking for a refund or anything free. We just wanted advice on how to revive it. He gave us some pointers and we thanked him. However, because of the miserable old bat that had no business being in contact with the public, we will never go back to Kane's. read more

My wife and I went to Kanes today to buy some herbs and plants. We were unable to find all that we wanted but had several items to check out at the outdoor cashier. A gentleman was checking each shopper's cart and advising the cashier who rang up the charges. But, interestingly he chose to wear his mask around his chin, exposing both his mouth and nose. Just to be clear, he is a couple of feet from everyone who checks out in that line. I suggested that the mask would be more effective if he wore it properly, he said "thank you" and continued on. I spoke with a woman who was "in charge" about the gentleman who responded that "he just won't wear the mask" and that I should advise him to do so! Interesting approach. Each year I come back here for flowers for my window boxes and planters. The flowers are quality and long lasting. They have a beautiful selection and my favorite - Johnny Jump-ups which are hard to find. While Kanes is more expensive than Home Depot, you will end up spending about the same because the 6 packs are all quality plants. This is the first year I bought my vegetables here as well. Again, maybe $1 more a plant, so it's not that much more than the commerical stores. The staff is very helpful and you can get out of there pretty quick. I did purchase a planter here because I have not seen it anyplace else. It sits on top of the deck railing. A neat idea - $15. read more

The customer service here is horrendous and there was an older guy that was yelling at me like a child for loading my car with a pallet, I asked one of the other workers if I could take one and he said yes. Then all I hear was yelling from the entrance. I couldnt even understand what he was saying until he came right up to me. Even after I put it back he was still mumbling something. Prior to this, I came once before to buy lime for my lawn as well as several hundred dollars worth of plants and soil to support local businesses rather than big box stores but now for all my gardening needs I am just going to go back to Lowe's. Kane's prices are much higher for soil amendments and a some of their plants looked in pretty bad shape. They have some specialized vegetables which is great but I have really been put off by the customer service and it seems like others have experienced the same. read more

I'm from Danvers. Listen up folks: The greenhouse that houses all the houseplants and tropical plants at Kanes has a long time ongoing mealy bug infestation. It is bad. If you bring mealy bugs ( very tiny) into your home you will never be rid of them. They are suckers and can kill a philodendron and many common plants in a few weeks.You'll fight them until you give up and toss all your houseplants. Don't even think of buying a palm here. They are infested. This place is a money grubbing dump. read more

just came back from Kane's. Went looking for seedlings for my vegetable garden. I passed on the 1/2 dz sickly and wilted tomato plants that people had extracted good plants to make a decent 6 pk. Plenty of pepper plants. several yellow gourd squash. That was it. The only vegetable seed that they had were bush string beans. I asked one person if they would be getting any more veg plants and was told that they would be. I asked the guy in the greenhouse the same question and he said no. The greenhouse was almost empty. They have a decent selection but their customer service is nonexistent. They treat customers terribly and are downright mean. They once yelled at my son for carrying a plant tray and they yelled at me for taking a poinsettia into another part of the store. Recently I purchased a fairly expensive bush there but it died almost immediately. I tried to return it but the older gentleman at the gate (the rudest one) berated me for it being "bone dry". I've watered this thing every single day. He wouldn't let me return or exchange it. I was thinking about getting some fall bulbs but not after that! I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

Go to a Home Depot or Lowe's garden section and scan the entire area, then close your eyes and multiply in your mind what you just saw by about 10 and the variety by about 20. Yes, Kane's is a Candyland for the green thumb. Come in spring and be delighted with a sensory smorgasbord of colors from perennials, annuals, vegetable plants, local grown herbs, glazed clay pots and so much more. I'm a tad more boring and am partial to lazy black thumb plant varieties. I love perusing the greenhouse where they hold plants like staghorn ferns, fiddle-leaf fig trees, ZZ plants, snake plants, rubber tree plant, jade plant, kolanchoe, aloe and the sort (most of which are horticultural staples of office buildings and shopping mall common areas). Always a wide selection to choose from come spring time. Never had issues finding help from staff. Prices are very good. Playing some Where's Waldo to find their friendly resident kitty cats is always a stress-reliever. Kane's is one of my favorite places to visit when I'm on the North Shore. read more

I bought several plants...one was a hanging plant that a worker, the son? and the old lady promised would be good in full hot sun all day..brought home Saturday and watered, looked bad by morning...watered twice on Sunday...Monday morning it was on death's door....brought it back after only 2 days wanting to exchange for one with more stamina.....guy was a jerk. I recommend a Kane's/Home Depot combo; Kane's is the shiznit when it comes to florals and veggies, Home Depot gets the discount points for supplies & soil. Kane's is comparably priced and their plates radiate happiness & health. The quality of the herbs, rose bushes, flowers, ornamental grasses, everything, is so far above any chain store it's unbelievable--tightly closed buds, sturdy stems and large, kelly-green leaves that you won't find elsewhere. Plus, they have a HUGE selection--aisles and aisles inside with a large variety of flowers (though it seemed over 50% right now is geraniums), an outdoor lot with bushes, shrubs, and more tables filled with flats, along with two more greenhouses with flats and veggies. There really is no comparison for the sheer magnitude of this place in relation to other Rt. 128 horticulture shops. I got a beautiful, large rose bush for $13.99, a three-bloom hyacinth for $14.99, a six-pack of strawberries + 2 Gerber daisies for $4.99 each and tons of potted herbs for only $2.99. However, as one would expect, gardening supplies such as soil, watering cans, shovels, etc. seemed to be a little pricier. Their soil was $6-something; I got organic at Home Depot for $4-something. Kane's also has staff : customer ratio down as well though; there's always someone lurking around a plant to answer your questions. And the best part is, they have an outdoor pay booth. Just bring your plants and they'll ring you up right in the parking lot. How's _that_ for customer service!! (And yes, they have a hot dog/chuck wagon cart too) read more

However, customer service was awful. I kept being referred by all their staff to only one person name Pete. He was just awful to deal with. I used to spend thousand of dollars a year at this establishment. I recently bought a plant that frankly was bad. I planted and watered and it died. They would not take it back and exchange WITH RECEIPT. They do have this policy posted so shame on me for not seeing it, BUT it was the way I was treated by the owner and staff that will keep me from spending another penny. I will never ever forget....(although it has been 30 years)! I bought what I thought was a lovely flower for my Mom, (Mother's Day was the next day). My kids were with me...Next morning, the plant was dead...very dead! I took the plant back to Kane's to show them, and hoped they might want to replace it for us? NO....OLD MAN KANE, (very mean) said it was my fault and I killed the plant! I told my kids, let's just go.....so we started to walk to the car. Suddenly, OLD MEAN MR KANE started to chase us and he threw the dead plant at us and smashed it on my car. My kids were devastated, they were crying. This was completely uncalled for! WHY I did not press charges, I will never understand. One thing I do know is, I will NEVER....and have NEVER EVER spent one more cent in that place! I wish OLD MAN KANE were still alive so I could tell him what a mean old SOB he was....But somehow, I do believe he knows that...He has met his maker and is paying now! read more
