We stopped in here on our first day on the island to check it out since we were shopping and I'd been thinking about upgrading my ukulele. We met Lucky and he was very helpful and friendly. He was patient and answered all my questions. He also let me try out several different ukuleles. I found out they were having a killer sale and they also would ship the instrument to my home back on the mainland. I told him I'd come back prior to our leaving the island. When I returned, Lucky was there as well as Sam, the owner and Lucky's dad. Sam was super cool as well. He answered more of my questions and showed me many options. I knew I wanted to upgrade to a tenor ukulele since my first one is a soprano. He was willing to honor the sale for the soprano ukuleles for the tenor I picked. I honestly feel I got an amazing deal for a beautiful instrument. I chose a ukulele with a Sitka spruce soundboard, ebony fretboard and bridge, gold pearl block inlays and around the head with the Kamoa diamond, walnut head and spalted maple backsides. It's gorgeous! He had several of the model I wanted, and we were able to get me the #1 edition of that model. I think he said only 12 had been made for the year. Score! They also took the time to lower the action on the fretboard so the strings were set closer. We jammed a little and then Sam and Lucky played for me as well. It was a really great experience! Shipping was super quick. My ukulele was delivered the day we got back! I love it! Thank you, Sam, Lucky and Kamoa! read more

Excellent customer service and attention to detail. Sam was extremely helpful tuning and listening to the sound. A few little lessons. They shipped my ukulele right to our home in CA. One of the highlights of our visit! read more

Walked in, spoke with Sam about what I'm looking for, scoped my options, found my first ukulele, and bought it all within 15 minutes. Fast friendly service and a local business that loves music. They cut me a deal on a beautiful instrument, I've been smiling since I got it. Good quality Kauai instruments with a fair price. The ukulele I picked out was made of mango tree wood, came with a case, was #5 out of a small batch, sounds heavenly, and ran me only $200. Thanks again Sam read more

Kamoa - Musical Instruments & Teachers Near Me - Kapaa, Hawaii

The best store on Kauai to purchase a high quality ukulele. 100's on display. Komoa makes professional grade musical instruments. I'm a jazz guitarist, took my 1st lesson July 8, 1960. I own 28 guitars and 4 ukuleles. So I can instantly perceive the difference between a real musical instrument and mass produced mediocrity. Komoa owner, Sam, is the nicest guy. Sincere and cheerful. He'll knowledgeably guide you to a good ukulele that fits your budget and musical goals. No hard sell sales pitches here. If you are a beginner, hang out for your first free lesson. This shop and the Kamaka family shop in Honolulu are arguably the best ukulele retailers in the world. 5 stars! Highly recommend. read more

They have a wide selection of gorgeous ukuleles, and are more than happy for you to try as many as you'd like. I fell in love with one, and my fiancee found her dream uke too. Sam is a very kind, knowledgeable, and simply nice person to be around. He helped us a ton, was easy to work with, and absolutely zero pressure. I will be back if I ever need an upgrade. I stumbled across this shop on vacation with family knowing nothing of their ukuleles but drawn in by the lovely pearl display they had. When we came in a simple question turned into an amazing learning experience for me and my family about pearl quality, selection, growth, just everything. It was obvious the craftsmanship, passion, and knowledge they had was through the roof. I knew I wanted something special before we left so decided to get a necklace from the shop. They were amazing at working with me on my budget and what I was looking for and each interaction felt intimate and special even with other patrons in the shop. In the end I got to choose my pearl and they custom made the necklace for me. It came out everything I wanted and will be a treasured daily wear item. I only wish I had known more about ukuleles before I visited! I have a goal now to learn to play mine so if I ever get a chance to come back I can get one of their gorgeous pieces there. The whole shop is family run and gives such an authentic and wholesome vibe. They know what they're doing and care so much which seems hard to find these days. 100% recommend this shop as a must see in Kaua'i. read more

Just WOW...! Sammy & his crew are the definition of "Aloha!" Talk about serving the community & the youth! Sammy was VERY educational & helpful when it came to educating our two 13 year olds on everything boogie board related. He advised us on range of price, size & brand. The board that one of our boys had anxiously awaited for & now had birthday funds (& sponsorship!!!! Go boys!!) wasn't yet on island. Sammy allowed us to pre-order & he promised he would let us know when they came in. The DAY they arrived, Sammy texted me "what color does he want?" By the end of the day, the new board already had the leash & a few stickers on it. Mahalo plenty to you Sammy; you really helped us a ton!!! Our entire village Ohana appreciates you & the care & support we appreciate. You've earned loyal customers for life.... read more

Both Samuel and his mom were super helpful, can play well, and made the potentially daunting task of choosing the right instrument a breeze. I've only been to one other shop on the island so cannot tell if this one is the best, but they do have the most informative website. And they do have something for every need: from starter ukes you can take to the beach and not worry about damage to high-end Kamaka (built in Oahu). And a great in-between selection of mid priced ($500-600) Samuel-designed, Italian-built great sounding instruments. I personally bought my forever-uke (a stark upgrade from my Costco-bought $100 untunable starter) and couldn't be happier. As a player/writer/producer I wanted a high-quality instrument that stays in tune and records well and I got exactly what I needed. Just go and try some of the ukuleles for yourself, it's fun! read more

The proprietor Samuel, made shopping in-person a life-memory experience. Yes, we purchased a finely crafted ukulele, but, equally important, Samuel's passion for music and finely crafted instruments comes pouring out of him. You will learn as much as you ever hope from Samuel about Ukuleles, how they're made, their sound, difference in quality, and he will help you find your path to whichever instrument is a just-right fit for you. Kamoa carries inventory for every level of experience ability, and budget, and a broad sampling of authentic island-made ukes (as well as imports for those who want an entry-level test-it-out instrument). Samuel offers enthusiastic, patient salesmanship, but NEVER pushy. He's just as content to educate the looky-loos as the serious buyers. We were especially smitten with the patience and intuitiveness Samuel had with our teen daughter, who has high-functioning autism and extreme social anxiety. She is a gifted musician, and she was reticent to even enter the store, let alone lay hands on an instrument. Through his patience, our daughter was able to come out of her shell (after almost an hour, reluctantly meandering in the furthest corner of the store, and at first, only willing to stroke a few ukes) to (extremely quietly) sampling an instrument, with Samuel's help, which led to more sampling, and ultimately the purchase of a lifetime. Forever grateful. Lifelong supporters now of Kamoa Ukulele Company read more

Incredible shop. I've been playing guitar for most of my life but have been looking to add a ukulele to my collection. Sam the owner was very knowledgeable and patient. Took the time to walk me through each of the various woods and models. He didn't try to hard sell me on the priciest models and actually convinced me to take the entry level model based on the kinds of music I play. Packaged up my new ukulele and shipped it back to the continental states with a case, extra strings and tuner. A beautiful instrument that I'll play for years to come. Highly recommend stopping by to check out the inventory. You won't be sorry. read more

After reading the many wonderful reviews of this store, I find myself very perplexed. The man who I assume is the owner of this store seemed arrogant, rather rude, and certainly not interested in selling us a ukulele. I've been playing for years and have many friends who are are well known in the ukulele world, but this guy was more interested in showing us that he could play the ukulele than he was in selling us one. He seemed upset that I picked up an instrument and tried it out, which seemed extremely strange. How can you decide if an instrument is the right one for you if you can't play it??? Not sure whether this guy was just having a bad day or is always like this, but whatever his problem was, we left rather quickly. The store seemed well stocked with beautiful instruments, but I'd rather take my business elsewhere. read more

Bad timing on my part kept me from being able to make it in before it closed until the very last day I was on the island when we saw the lights on and the open sign in the window. The wifey and I ran across the street to get in before they closed. We met Sammy the owner who literally was the most welcoming person we met on Kauai! Such a happy man with a sincere passion for his business. Although I couldn't afford the Ukulele that my wife wanted, I'll definitely be purchasing it for her from this store which is 4,500 miles away from my home. Every time I've traveled somewhere warm and tropical, I've been enticed repeatedly to buy a ukulele and bring some of that tropical warmth back home to the grey cold streets of the city. But inevitably, what I most often find are ornamental pieces that both sound terrible and are way overpriced. Kamoa is probably one of the very very few exceptions. To start, Gigi was amazing. During my first visit, she stayed past closing to answer questions and spread her infectious enthusiasm with the slowly growing crowd of tourists who would stumble in as the other stores started to close. The next day, I came back a bit earlier when the store was empty, and Gigi paid me the exact same attention and care as I saw her pay each and every potential customer the night before. She walked me through almost every single option in the entire store, and even nuances between different instruments of the same type. This is the kind of person you want fronting your store! I think many people can be knowledgeable about their instruments, but few can impart that same knowledge to their customers in a way that makes them feel equally excited and better equipped to make an informed decision. Gigi had that ability, which further boosted my confidence in making my purchase at Kamoa. At the end of the day, I felt most reassured by the fact that this was a store that was selling ukuleles for the sake of selling a quality instrument for making music, rather than selling a decorative memento that would sit on a mantle and serve as a talking point for what you did last summer. I'm glad I waited, and I'm very happy with my purchase! read more

Almost a year ago I emailed the Kamoa Ukulele Company after reading excellent and meaningful reviews, and I received a warm return message from Sam. This week I traveled from the mainland and fulfilled my dream of buying a ukulele from this wonderful company! Although they ship their beautiful instruments, I wanted to come in person and work my vacation around this activity. Sam and his parents are lovely, committed folks who exude the highest integrity, joy in what they do, plus obvious love and care for their instruments. Sam helped me choose a perfect ukulele for me, and every day I came for a free lesson. I'm now playing a few tunes, and having so much fun with it. Thank you to Kamoa Ukulele Company! I look forward very much to visiting again next year. read more

Went here a couple years ago, just meaning to look. I've been playing a few years, and really had my heart set on a Kamaka. Ended up finding a Kamoa that stole my heart, and I haven't looked back since. Pretty much I stop by anytime I'm on Kaua'i and do my best not to empty my wallet (luckily they didn't have what I was looking for this last trip...). Even to a chump like me, the folks at both shops were happy to talk story and give me lotsa info. Best shop on the island if you want a real instrument, and not some plastic toy uke. read more

I stumbled upon Kamoa Ukelele Company while visiting Kapaa recently. I'm a guitar player who at that point in time had never touched a ukelele. I now own two Kamoa ukeleles (one actually belongs to my 2yr old...we're starting a band) and love them. The quality of these instruments is very good, even on the base model. After going into a few shops looking and talking to a local musician about a Hawaiian made koa ukulele, I went looking for a KoAloha tenor. I ended up spending $1600.00. After the purchase I examined the instrument closer and did some research. This was a used ukulele with lines on the fretboard under the strings and the head stock inlay was missing. I could have purchased the same ukulele new for $500 less online. I was able to return it for a refund. read more

Just purchased my first uke from sam this morning. The whole process were awesome. I live in LA, so there were 3 hours time difference. Sam took my call at 7am local time with great upbeat and knowledgeable answers. The uke shipped out within the same day with tracking number and everything. Great great customer service. I've also ordered a custom electric uke from him. And he is going to build it from ground up with my own custom color and specs, hope to deliver before Christmas. Truthfully. This was the place we needed! After visiting a few island music shops where you aren't allowed to touch anything, we strolled in and were greeted by a "they're almost all tuned and ready to play." Such a friendly shop that really encourages you to play ukulele and helps you find the one that's right for you. High end ukes too, but an impressive selection of their own affordable designs. Hubs got a pretty uke strung to his liking and a case. Forget all the other shops and just come here. read more

If I could give Komoa Store a higher rating than 5 stars I would. They deserve it. First of all, Sam is a man of high integrity, honesty, and passion for his work. But he possesses a genuine kindness that emanates from him in everything that he does. Most people know about his Ukelele's - but I know about his TAHITIAN PEARLS. Years ago, I purchased a pistachio colored single tahitian pearl from Sam and he designed a setting for me to wear as a necklace. It was stunning. Recently, I suffered a home invasion and all of my jewelry was stolen. I had decided to repIace only a few beloved items - and a tahitian pearl was one of those items. I was in Kauia in October and went to see Sam in hopes of finding a replacement pearl. As we talked, and I looked at what Sam had created with his pearls, he suggested that rather than replace something taken, that I find something that would create a new memory - this reframing of my purpose, lifted the pain of the loss and gave me freedom to consider what I really wanted. I fell in love with a ring that Sam had and he offered to design a ring for me out of Green Gold (something I had never heard of and which is incredibly unique) with a pearl that was macaw in color (turquoise and green). I ordered the ring, completely trusting that Sam would create something stunning with just the right color pearl. I left the store and thought about Sam's kindness and realized that I was not quite done. 2 days later, I went back to order a single pearl to wear as a necklace. Again, Sam was instrumental in helping me to isolate the look that I really wanted. We discussed the color pearl that I hoped for and the necklace itself. I left the selection of the actual pearl to him when his next pearls came in. Earlier this week, I received photos of the finished products and today, I received my ring and necklace. The pearls are so stunning that they actually glow from within - the glow, luster and color - literally took my breath away. I got a lump in my throat and felt tears welling up at the sheer beauty captured in the pearl and in the settings. And I am not a crier by any stretch. The photos were beautiful but do not compare to the actual pearls and settings. The pearls literally have a life of their own - they truly glow from within - no photo can capture that. I am thrilled and highly recommend that anyone looking for Tahitian pearls contact Sam - you will not be disappointed!!! He is a gem much like the beautiful pearls that he sells. I feel blessed to know Sam and will send everyone I know to him. The finished product is worth every penny. I write this with a grateful heart. read more
