She RUINED my daughters prom dress hem…read more First of all her studio is disgusting and dirty but her name was on a recommendation list and we trusted her. All we needed was a simple hem on a multi layered tulle skirt. I have a background in clothing design and marketing so I could have done it myself but didn't have the time. She not only sewed the hem CROOKED and made it too short in areas but she left a train on the back of the dress despite me specifically telling her we want a straight hem all the way around with NO train. When we went to pick it up she told us it would be $500 CASH!! I was shocked. Shame on me for not asking the hem price in advance but I assumed I knew the average alteration prices because of my background. Here's where it gets interesting. I knew I was screwed and had to pay the $500 because the prom was in 3 days but I wanted her to fix the hem. We were desperate! She gets on the floor and starts willy bully pinning the hem to fix it and is moaning and groaning and mumbling...then she proceeded to start taking the pins out. When I asked her what she's doing she said she didn't want to work on the dress anymore because it was killing her! I said she shouldn't have accepted the job if it was too much work for her (4 layers of fabric). She told us to leave and take the dress. If you are wondering, yes, I did NOT pay her a dime. At that point I had a $600 valued dress that had been ruined and I had to try to fix the hem within a few days. We drove right over to Kathryn's dress shop in McHenry (where we bought the dress) and every employee in there bent over backwards to fix the dress. We immediately saw the seamstress and came up with a compromise to fix the hem enough so that no one would notice and have my daughter wear flat shoes. They fixed the dress beautifully at a very fair alterations price and had it ready in 48 hours on the morning of prom! (Originally they could not alter the dress because they were booked so they gave us a referral list. They will no longer be referring to Maria!) NEVER use Maria's Alterations in McHenry and ALWAYS shop at Kathryn's in McHenry for your special occasion dresses!

DO NOT go to Debra for your alterations. Even if she was recommended by your bridal boutique. The…read morework she did on my wedding gown was just awful. I had and am still having an awful experience with Debra. From the beginning she was hard to communicate with. At first, I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt because she had mentioned that she would be having some surgeries and would be trying to get the alterations done before then. But I regret giving her my dress at all. She never knew who I was or what she was altering for me whenever I spoke with her regarding my dress. This was a big red flag but she already had my dress. She was very forceful/rude when it came to payments being in cash only and constantly reminded me of this fact. The alterations she was going to do were adding a bustle, shortening the straps, replacing the zipper, fixing the snags on the lace, and adding cups. The buttons and hooks she added for the bustle are sloppily sewn on and make the fabric pucker and it does not lay correctly. They are also not evenly placed. There is also one hook missing. She did not shorten the straps (or she didn't shorten them enough because they still fall off my shoulders) or fix the snags. The zipper replacement was also very sloppy. You can see the zipper through my dress and it is crooked. I've spoken to another seamstress since and she confirms that the work is bad and very sloppy. As you can imagine, this was all very upsetting to me when I finally tried on my dress. Which she didn't mention that I should do before picking up the dress. My mom picked it up for me and I didn't have a final fitting. Not only was all of the sloppy work upsetting, but I also spent almost $300 on alterations that I will just have to have fixed by someone else. She also charged me for the cups to be added in but she did not finish the work. She wanted to wait to add the cups because they don't fair well in the dry cleaning process. At the time, I thought that waiting on the cups was fine because I assumed I would be going back to her to finish my alterations. I will not be returning to her for future work. I contacted Debra on more than one occasion to share my concerns and ask for a refund and her response further confirms that she does not know who I am and she does not remember my dress. She said that I had a final fitting with her and that I did not voice any of these concerns. As I stated earlier in my review, I did not have a final fitting. She never mentioned having one and rushed me to pick up the dress because she was having a surgery. Because I couldn't get there in her time frame, my mom picked up my dress for me. She did refund me the amount for the cup installation. Even if it doesn't come close to what I will have to pay to get it all fixed. I understand that she was having some surgeries but she should not have taken me on as a client if she could not deliver quality work. Debra is unprofessional and does not take the time to even try to know the client she is talking to.
