If I could give Maria NEGATIVE stars I would! She RUINED my daughters prom dress hem. First of all her studio is disgusting and dirty but her name was on a recommendation list and we trusted her. All we needed was a simple hem on a multi layered tulle skirt. I have a background in clothing design and marketing so I could have done it myself but didn't have the time. She not only sewed the hem CROOKED and made it too short in areas but she left a train on the back of the dress despite me specifically telling her we want a straight hem all the way around with NO train. When we went to pick it up she told us it would be $500 CASH!! I was shocked. Shame on me for not asking the hem price in advance but I assumed I knew the average alteration prices because of my background. Here's where it gets interesting. I knew I was screwed and had to pay the $500 because the prom was in 3 days but I wanted her to fix the hem. We were desperate! She gets on the floor and starts willy bully pinning the hem to fix it and is moaning and groaning and mumbling...then she proceeded to start taking the pins out. When I asked her what she's doing she said she didn't want to work on the dress anymore because it was killing her! I said she shouldn't have accepted the job if it was too much work for her (4 layers of fabric). She told us to leave and take the dress. If you are wondering, yes, I did NOT pay her a dime. At that point I had a $600 valued dress that had been ruined and I had to try to fix the hem within a few days. We drove right over to Kathryn's dress shop in McHenry (where we bought the dress) and every employee in there bent over backwards to fix the dress. We immediately saw the seamstress and came up with a compromise to fix the hem enough so that no one would notice and have my daughter wear flat shoes. They fixed the dress beautifully at a very fair alterations price and had it ready in 48 hours on the morning of prom! (Originally they could not alter the dress because they were booked so they gave us a referral list. They will no longer be referring to Maria!) Worst customer service I have ever experienced. Maria is the only worker there and was extremely ignorant and rude. She had booked 3 other people who arrived the same time I had an appointment for. I called ahead of time just to ask for an estimate on what the cost would be for my dress and the work it needed. I was told to bring it in to be looked at before a quote could be given. My mom and I went into the house for our appointment and Maria put only a few pins in at the bottom to show the length it needed to be shortened to and then proceeded to tell me she couldn't tighten the dress around my hips or chest how I wanted. The dress is a size 12 and I am a size 2-4 so there was definitely room to come in. I had gone to another alteration place referred by the place where my dress was bought and they had no problem bringing the dress in to be my accurate size. My mom told her we needed to think about it before going through with the alterations since she wasn't able to make the dress look how we previously had seen it. She then told my mom she has to pay her $30 just for wasting her time (which was 15 min of discussing the dress after we waited 20 minutes past our appointment time for her to be ready to see us). I told her that I had thought she would look at the dress and see if she could do it and I didn't realize we would be charged just for asking questions on what she can and can't do. Maria is definitely not someone to bring a wedding gown to that needs skilled or extensive work. I wouldn't refer her for anyone. She is too outdated to have the patience or skill to work on anything except some simple stitching or basic hemming. Very disappointed going to this place. read more

I had some lab coats that I wanted resized in the arms because they were too big. For some reason, she only did the area from the elbow to the wrist?! Now Why would she do it like that? I called her and told her that I wasn't a satisfied customer. She was nice enough to tell me to bring the labcoats back, that she would be happy to fix them for me - only to be charged EXTRA!!! She never told me that she would charge me extra when I dropped the labcoats off the second time! Unbelievable!!! A sucker for money, that's what you are! I did not complain that you were charging each labcoat $22 for the resizing alone, but for you to charge me $8 more for something that you should have done right in the first place!!! read more

I was referred to Maria's after looking for recommendations on a McHenry Facebook page. Multiple people suggested her and I'm so glad I listened. She did our daughter's first communion dress, was done in a day and the price was lower than I was expecting. I will definitely return to her for future alterations. read more
