Thielmann: I'll try to give a brief background. The furnace (unit also has AC component) in my…read morecondo was having white smoke/steam come out of the external vent during some of the extremely cold weather we were having. Even though my furnace was not making any unusual noises, smells, or setting off my carbon monoxide detector, I was still concerned as no other condos in my building or nearby buildings were having the smoke/steam. The employee that initially inspected by furnace (Carlos?) informed me that the heat exchange was clogged and would require me to repair the furnace or purchase a whole new unit (I opted for a whole new unit based on its age). Carlos gave me the impression there was no rush and that it was not something that necessarily needed to be done immediately. When the second employee (Dave?) came later that day to take measurements and verify the replacement unit needed, he made it seem almost emergent and began to wonder aloud if he needed to shut my furnace off that day. The stark contrast between the two was alarming and created a bit of a trust issue on who to believe. Carlos seemed a little green and Dave seemed like more of a veteran. Dave eventually determined it did not need to be shut off as no carbon monoxide was entering my condo. The whole experience did create a bit of a panic for me though, so I quickly accepted the only available appointment within the following two weeks. It was convenient that they could get it replaced just five days later, but if it truly wasn't an emergency then I would have liked a little more time to verify I was getting the best price as it wasn't cheap (to give you an idea this is the largest purchase I've ever made behind my home, education, and car). They do offer payment plans that were easy to enroll in, one of which has 0% interest if paid off within a year. I'm not trying to throw anyone under the bus, but I can tell they really want an honest review as I've received multiple texts and emails asking to leave one. The crew that showed up on the morning of 12/24 to install the new unit were quick and efficient. They were respectful of my property and explained the new thermostat to me. All the employees were friendly, including the ones running the office over the phone (Micah?).

Thanks to the flooding my hot water heater is shot! I called Thielmann (since they previously were…read moreRoss and that was the service I use to use) they came out to inspect my pilot light situation and unfortunately just the inch of water I had is the right amount needed to short circuit things. He also made sure to check out my furnace to ensure there weren't any issues with that - I knew the AC was working fine but he ran a service check on the heat as well. I am a little confused as to what's happening for the next appointment I've set up - is this to gain an estimate on a new heater or to actually install one which is the reasoning for 3 versus 4 star. Tried calling back to find out but couldn't get ahold of someone. I'd like to get a few quotes of course for something like that/have a discussion about the types of options for water heaters.

I had an appointment for a $179 A/C tune-up. We had been customers of 1st Choice for 26 years and…read moreregularly had "Steve" as our tech. He was knowledgeable and honest. He retired, the company changed hands a couple years ago and this is what happened. The new tech "Nick" arrived and immediately declared our existing unit obsolete. He never layed a meaningful hand on the equipment. Since it was 26 years old I decided to go with his advice which lead to cursory look at our furnace and a caution that "Carrier" was fazing out of residential HVAC equipment and they no longer sold it. He suggested that we stop right there before he did any "work" and have his brother "Dan" come in to give me an estimate on replacing both units. He said there would be NO CHARGE for him since he hadn't done anything. He left and Dan came an hour later and gave me an estimate for roughly $14,000. It was emailed to me. When I looked for it the first thing I saw was a bill for $135 for "Cancelling the Tune-up"! There was nothing wrong with my equipment so I called the "office" and this awful receptionist, Heather, immediately got defensive. She insisted that the technician should have told me about the charge and that she would have a lien put on our house if I didn't pay! She Hung up when I told her that she likely just caused her company to lose a $14,000 job. I called back the next day, hoping to get through to anyone who understood the situation. If they were going to charge me $135 for nothing, I wanted them to come back for the $179 tune-up. "Heather" answered again and refused to forward the call, and hung up again! I am a respected business man in the real estate and financial business for over 40 years. I have given out hundreds of referrals over that time. I would never recommend this HVAC company again if they were the last one on earth!

Too expensive. Asked them to come out to replace a thermostat. Trip charge was about $160 and…read morethen they called and said it would be $750 to put a new thermostat in. I turned it down and called E&R Heating and the trip charge was $125 and then the thermostat plus install was another $100 for a total of $225. I have rental properties that I don't manage anymore so I haven't had to call an HVAC person in years since the property manager does that for me. I knew the price should be around $200-300 total and almost $1000 was just insane.

I needed a new furnace and AC as the current system was at least 15 years old. I had three…read morecompany's quote the work and walked them through the house. I had also explained to each company that my current heat was incredibly uneven and was only fed from the ceiling of my ranch house. During the winter, parts of the house where 15 degrees (Fahrenheit) different in temperature. I asked them all to re-run all the ducts and put the furnace in the basement for a more even heating throughout the house. Tom was the only contractor that noticed that part of the living room was not over the basement but just had a cement slab under it (i.e. no access underneath). So in order to heat the living room properly they would have to run a duct up to the attic and over the ceiling and force air down on the exterior portion of the living room. I appreciated that Tom took the time to figure that out, I actually had never measured the width of the upstairs living room and compared it to the width of the basement so I didn't even realize 6' of the living room is sitting on a cement slab. Toms was also the only contractor that was comfortable cutting into existing tile in the kitchen and bathrooms and included it into the quote. They also did an excellent job matching the grout in each area. Overall their workmanship was excellent and their employees very polite when working around my wife and curious 1 year old. However I had specifically asked for upper and lower vents in the living room so I can open/close the corresponding returns during the different seasons and they had forgotten to put in the upper vent. I called the technician and asked if they could come back and put it in and he said, "well, I'll drop off a vent cover and you can install it, I noticed you have all the tools to do it in your basement and it looks like you are handy." He wasn't wrong and I could have easily done it but I was frustrated at how much I paid for a complete re-do of the system and something I specifically asked for wasn't done even though it was a very small thing. I was paying a professional to re-do my house so I didn't have to try and re-do the HVAC on my house while I have a demanding job and a light sleeping curious toddler in the house. I withheld the 2nd half of the payment, and Tom gave me a call and asked why I hadn't paid and I said I really wanted the upper lower vent in the living room like we talked about and you quoted, 3 hours later it was completed and I paid the next business day. I've had the furnace over the majority of the winter and all summer now and the house is incredibly evenly heated and cooled. Great quality work overall, prompt, showed up when they said they would, worked quickly and efficiently but just left a bad taste in mouth.

He ordered a new gauge and it is so clear to read and works great. He also cleaned out the sediment that had gotten stuck at the end of the line from running out of fuel oil. Now everything is working great! My experience with Tom's Heating has been excellent.
