The worse poke we have ever had. We both got larges and instantly got a strong bitter taste and kept getting bitter bites we had to throw it away without eating much. The fish was cut in huge stringy pieces and slightly mealy in texture, and the avocado was just a huge blob/half a whole avocado. How embarrassing to serve that. Oh and the rice was hot, who is not normal or appropriate for poke. Also, the seaweed salad had a yellow hue, we've never seen that and eat that often at various other places. To top it often the service was horrible. Two men working there were throwing metal containers and slamming stuff, and were so rude to customers. Any poke place that had a promotion for free poke if you finish some $60 worth of it poke is not a quality establishment. We will never be back. read more

This is one of my favorite poke spots in OC. Everything is always fresh, and their portion sizes are good. I got the regular plate today. Which is three scoops of protein, two sides, and the base. I got the salad base with a side of Hawaiian bread and crabmeat for the protein. I got spicy tuna, shrimp, and scallops. You can put a topping and sauces on there to your liking. I promised that I would give them another try after my first lukewarm experience. This was definitely an improvement. I went with the large plate with the ahi and the salmon poke. This time the fish was much fresher. To be a little healthier, I put it all on their salad instead of rice. The lettuce was fresh. I then selected a number of the toppings (cucumbers, white onions, jalapeños, green onions, sesame seeds, ginger, wasabi, and furikake). For my sauce, I did the medium shoyu and the spicy mayo. Cute little shop with some seating inside and a big parking lot, which made parking really easy. The staff were also very nice and welcoming. I ordered the Regular Plate ($17.45), which comes with 3 proteins. I chose 2 scoops of salmon and 1 scoop of tuna. The rice was nice and warm, and the fish tasted fresh. For the price though, I do wish they gave a little more toppings or slightly bigger scoops. Went in & was instantly greeted by staff. It's the usual process, select size, your vase, your sides, veggies/add-ons, protein, sauces and toppings. Opted for a large, feeling hungry (I figured if I don't finish it, Hubby will). Half brown rice, half salad, 3 sides: mac, seaweed & crab salad. Protein (5), salmon, tuna, yellowtail, spicy tuna, scallop. Sauces: spicy mayo, sesame oil & shoyu. Toppings: furikake & sesame seeds. It was pretty hefty in weight but it didn't seem to be that much in portion size. I think it could've used more salad-probably because the greens were drenched with the sauce. Overall, the taste was pretty good. Service was fairly attentive. The place is tucked in a small strip mall. Somehow it did not give me the wow factor that would make me go out of my way to return but it fit the bill at this time. Price-wise, at par with some of the poke places I've visited. Kamea Poke in Dana Point is a great spot for a refreshing build-your-own poke bowl. Indoor seating is available. They have lots of options, so you can try out or omit whatever you like. Regular bowl comes with three scoops of fish and two sides. Between the salmon and tuna, I preferred the tuna, which is rare for me since I usually love salmon. The fish tasted good and were thankfully neither lukewarm nor room temp. They also offer a variety of interesting sauces with unique flavors, such as the cilantro ceviche and the miso-chang. I liked the tart and herby cilantro ceviche better. The mild shoyu was great. It packed an umami punch without being too salty, and I appreciated that it was not sweet. It looked slightly goopy at first but mixed well with the fish. Service wasn't slow, but there was only one person taking and making orders. With two people ahead of us, we waited about a little over five minutes to be greeted and served. Located off of the PCH, there are nice ocean views and relaxed beachy vibes here. This is by far THE BEST poke place in OC. I have been a returning customer for the past 7 years and will continue coming back. Although they have raised their prices a substantial amount ($15 for two scoops of fish and $17 for three) it is still hands down the best I have tried. Fish is always fresh, people are nice, and it always tastes good. The portion sizes as well are massive even though it's expensive. Poke bowl tasted good at first... but then I noticed the tuna was super sinewy and tough. Other pieces were super mushy. I tried to overlook it, but then I noticed my son (who never gets sauce) wasn't eating his fish. He said the salmon tasted bad. I smelled it and it smelt SO fishy! He also said the tuna tasted sour. I tried it and he was right. My fish was covered in sauce, so aside from the texture of it I wouldn't have noticed that it wasn't fresh. Every few minutes new customers came in. The closing time is 8pm. They close their seating at 7:30pm. The ordering process is Chipotle style ordering with picking your base then your proteins and then sides and toppings and sauce. Their menu is pretty big for the variety your able to choose from with regards to toppings and sides. I like how for sides you can choose with miso soup, seaweed salad, macaroni salad, etc. I liked the kick of the Mauna Loa with ponzu for saucing my fish. Overall it was a pleasant experience.
