Haven't seen this one before. Community Parks always is a nice place to seek out refuge from the urban rat race we all face on a daily basis. These vast landscapes help us humans rekindle our youth while reminding ourselves that life is something beautiful, whether we see it here in a community park, the ocean, or even the in the concrete jungle of everyday living. I arrived here on a brisk Friday afternoon in mid April 2020. The park itself is relatively a small space. Almost like vacant green space that was probably someone's back yard, but was converted into Hunakai community park. Although there is a small sand pit on the property, not sure if they use it for sand volleyball games or not. I guess users who play would need to bring in their own equipment, since the tendency of stuff getting stolen is high when left unattended. During my experience here at Hunakai park, I basically walked around the perimeter of the park and people watched as much as I can. I also tried to enjoy the fact that I was outside enjoying the fresh breeze on a warm spring April afternoon in Hawaii. I think I did about 5 laps around the park perimeter before stopping to relax. You can't really sit down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I just leaned under some trees to take the edge off before walking around a bit more before heading back to Kahala Mall for some take out options. It was nice to see some people out and about exercising and enjoying the outside. The overall experience here at Hunakai Park was quite nice, especially during the work day. It was very quiet and serene. The park itself is maintained by the good folks at the Hunakai Park association, which was formed in 2004 by volunteers in the community and sustained by charitable donations. Hunakai Park is located on the corner of Ulumaika Street and Hunakai Street in the heart of Kahala. Kahala Mall is about a mile away walking from the mall itself. There is mostly street parking where you can find it. If you are like me, bus routes 22, 23, and 14 provide service to the area, but you'd have to walk a block or two where the bus drops you off, depending on the street. Route 14 and 22 along Kahala Avenue and routes 23 and 24 on Kilauea Avenue. For the most part though, Hunakai Park is clean and very much a park for anyone and everyone to come and hang out in. With the rise of COVID-19 considerations, you can be sure that you can always come here to exercise and enjoy the view, but you can't sit down and relax - in the traditional sense. Only thing about the facility is that there is no facilities. No public restrooms here if nature calls. Best bet would be Kahala Mall or at Kahala Community Park a few blocks away, where there is restroom facilities on site. Needless to say that walking laps around the perimeter did give me joy,, even though the sun was relentless that afternoon. Hunakai park is also a dog park of sorts, where many people bring their furry companions here to play and socialize with others. I saw a couple of people with their pets here while I was doing my laps./It was soothing and nice to people watch. Nestled in the heart of Kahala, you can find peace and convenience here at this park. While it can be out of the way for some people, its worth the effort. Afterwards, the ocean is about 2 blocks away on Kahala Avenue, with a couple of entrances through public entrances. Hunakai Park is enjoyable and therauptic. Takes the edge off when you have had a tough day at the office. Recommended if you are in the area. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Public spaces are admission free. No charge! Support local! A+

The park is spacious, has great views, and is a popular place for dogs to socialize and burn off energy. Most of the dog owners are friendly and attentive, which creates a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. It's clear why this park is such a favorite for locals. That said, cleanliness is an area that could really use improvement. On several visits, there has been noticeable dog waste left behind, along with overflowing or poorly maintained trash areas. This takes away from an otherwise great experience and can be unpleasant for both dogs and owners. With more consistent cleaning and better enforcement of waste pickup, this park could easily be one of the best dog parks around. It has so much potential, and a little extra care would go a long way.

Located alongside a walking path, this is a great area to walk and then have your dog play with other dogs. There are two sides, for small dogs and big dogs. Secured with a double gate so no one accidently gets out. There even is a gate in the middle so you can switch sides if your dog doesn't vibe with either side. There's a few benches to sit at while your pup plays around, and it's a great way to chat with other dog owners in the community. This is a more simple dog park, there isn't a water fountain for the dogs -- so be sure to bring a bottle + bowl for your dog. What really makes this dog park is it's proximity to the canal, the water really does make the ambiance so much nicer.

It's been more than three decades since I last got on a basketball court to shoot some hoops, and it's nice to see that the Kapaolono Community Park is trying to up keep their facilities. This community park has a special place in my heart as I spent many hours here playing basketball, tennis, & baseball/softball. Kapaolono has a very large field, great for baseball & softball. Two tennis courts, & two basketball courts. They also have a swimming pool here, but I've never had a chance to use it. A few things I noticed about myself when I got back on the basketball court - 1. I noticed I had a little trouble dribbling the basketball, due to the neuropathy in my fingers. 2. I can still shoot the ball pretty well. 8 out of 10 on the freethrow line ain't too bad for an old fart like me. Lol! 3. Man, I am out of shape! If young kids asked me to join in on a pick-up game, I'd probably have to pass to prevent a heart-attack! Lol! 4. There are cracks on the basketball court, but at least the cracks are not craters! Lol! Still a great Community Park to visit & get some exercise! Gotta keep moving, to keep da old man out!

We took notice of its soft opening on January 31, 2020, as we were just next door at the Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park while out on our daily walk. We returned on February 7th to watch its Grand Opening ceremony. Secondly, I wondered about how this off-leash dog park would accommodate different sized dogs and energy levels (much like how the Mother Waldron Park separates children's' activities from the older junior ages and adults) since this dog park is nearly 8,000 square foot swath of land in between Mother Waldron Park's basketball courts and the walkway by Fisher Hawaii on Pohukaina Street. The rectangular-shaped dog park doesn't have a water fountain or separate areas for small or large dogs. Although there are signs posted with rules for the safety of your furry friend or family member and owner and hours of operation along the chain link fence entrance. There should be poop bags available so dog owners should make sure to pick up after their dog. If there's none, I would think that most responsible dog owners carry spare plastic bags. I hope to see more dogs and their human parents spending more time outdoors even during these difficult COVID times. Social distancing between humans is encouraged and maybe even between the furry friends (just in case of possible animal transmission). Maybe we'll see you there as we pass by or stop to vicariously enjoy watching the dogs frolic in this park.
