Cooling off in the stream.
Kristina V.

I love this dog park. Manoa Valley District Dog Park is an off leash dog park located on the "makai" side of the park (back corner of the park). This park is well taken care of, green grass, shady trees, benches, and no flies! There's a stream that flows through and the dogs love to dive in. The park is very safe and offers a lot of parking options, unlike other parks that can be a little dangerous parking or getting to. Our dog (Boston Terrier) loves it here. The dogs and the owners are very sweet, very sociable and knows every dog by name. We love coming to the Manoa Valley District Dog Park, we come here every day!

This was a nice place to bring my dog to not only go on a short dog walk, but to also let him play in the stream. During the weekend, it gets pretty busy with a lot of kids' sports games, but my dog had a blast.

Manoa Valley District Dog Park -- Makai Perimeter

Manoa Valley District Park (MVDP) has tennis courts, huge indoor basketball courts as well as outdoors, a swimming pool and several large playing fields. It's located right next to Manoa Elementary School. MVDP is a City and County of Honolulu maintained park. There is an official sign that states that the Kokohead (east) and Makai (south) sides of the Park are designated for dogs on a leash. Easiest way to orient yourself is to park at the separate parking lot closest to the swimming pool and walk to the right hand side; you're now at the makai side of the dog designated area of the park. It's not a "real" dog bark park as there's no 100% enclosure. But there are fences that separate this area from the playing fields. I suppose it's like the Ala Wai Dog park in this respect. What's Good: 1. GRASS. 100%. Oh yeah! No muddy or dirty paws on you from your pet! As stated, this is a City and County of Honolulu maintained place and the grass is THICK and GREEN. Okay, the County has no need to water the grass as Manoa Valley gets tons of rainfall year round. The designated areas are pretty huge and well maintained. I've seen dog owners take their pets into the baseball playing fields (not supposed to) unleashed when there's no one playing. There's lots of fencing because it's a baseball field (several actually) with the requisite dugout fences and foul ball fencing. 2. NO FLIES. Every other dog park I've been to there have been flies galore . Especially when you sit at a bench --- flies buzzing all over you. Well, NO fIies at all here. This is a big big plus in my book. 3. Fresh Running Water: If you are up to a really short hike down an earthen embankment (by the second bench and the circular part of the walkway), there you will find Manoa stream that meanders from the waterfall way back. Here starts the concrete culverts that most times (other than storms) is pretty safe to walk alongside the dry area while your dog plays in the stream (just inches deep.) Since it is a concrete culvert, there is no mud at all. You can go maybe 80 yards or so before you come to a dropoff and turn on back (I've gone past that for another 80 yards but the place is covered in graffiti (overpasses) so you might not wanna go thru there.) Getting back up the embankment can be tricky --grab ahold of the grassy shrubs and pull to get yourself back up. 4. Variety of Dogs: Mostly okay pets of all sizes but I think tending towards under 25 pounds. Most owners are pretty sociable too. 5. Plenty of nice shade trees all over the place where you can sit under on well maintained GRASS. There is a token second bench at the end of the walkway (where the dog owners congregate) but it is sunny there most all the time. The first bench though is a pretty nice and somewhat shadyish place to relax along the walkway. Caveats: 1. Bring your own poop bags as none are provided. There is a bag container thingy mounted but I've never seen bags in it. People do leave extra plastic grocery bags tied up by the trash can (kinda makes the place look funky though. Yup, those bags are an eye sore.) 2. There's occasionally leftover dog poop that some owners don't pick up along the Kokohead walkway. I'd keep my young puppy on leash along the walkway if you are concerned about Parvo. Mostly okay though along the makai side of the dog park. 3. Okay, unless you have a big dog that can take care of itself against other dogs, be wary of dog packs that will at least challenge and potentially attack your dog. Some dogs/owners have been coming to this park EVERY SINGLE DAY for YEARS and in doing so, their dogs have created informal PACKS amongst themselves. An indication that this may be occurring is when you see a large number of dog owners overly being chatty and social (almost like a bar scene) sitting or standing close together and hardly moving around. Their dogs will form an informal PACK amongst themselves due to familiarity. THIS IS A POTENTIAL DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR YOUR DOG. A new dog entering into this area will definitely be challenged by the more dominant dog i.e. those with a weak or non-existent pack leader owner. Dogs in this pack may collectively attack or harass your dog. This has happened to me both by a pack of small poodle type dogs as well as larger. But please don't let this dissuade you from going to this park. Just be aware of the potential situation. Conclusion: Manoa Valley District Dog park is the cleanest place to take your dog to have fun (other than the beach). The views of the mountains are really breathtaking. Dogs are there sporadically thruout the day (you might have the whole place to yourself) but more so after their owners finish work in the late afternoons. Really do give walking thru the concrete culvert containing Manoa stream a try. You'll have a totally different experience with your dog unobtainable at any other dog park on the island. Have fun and please pick up after your pet. UPDATE 07/14: More benches

The park is spacious, has great views, and is a popular place for dogs to socialize and burn off energy. Most of the dog owners are friendly and attentive, which creates a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. It's clear why this park is such a favorite for locals. That said, cleanliness is an area that could really use improvement. On several visits, there has been noticeable dog waste left behind, along with overflowing or poorly maintained trash areas. This takes away from an otherwise great experience and can be unpleasant for both dogs and owners. With more consistent cleaning and better enforcement of waste pickup, this park could easily be one of the best dog parks around. It has so much potential, and a little extra care would go a long way.

Its been a hit or miss. Some days the dog owners are great respectful, responsible and watch their dogs well....other times owners come here and let their dogs go and don't pick up their poop which ruins it for everyone! Please be responsible and watch your dog if you come and i dont recommend dog parks if your dog is not friendly it can be dangerous for others. I do love coming here after the KCC farmers market so convenient and parking lot across the street is accessible just hide your valuables.

I travelled up Mount Tantalus to the Park yesterday with my daughter. We travelled through beautiful dense forest at the Park entrance. At the highest overlook, we could see everything and more from Diamond Head out to (and beyond) the airport. We could see all of Honolulu. I felt like we were on top of the world! Plaques offer fascinating overviews of the history and geology of the landmarks below. We could even see inside the famous tuff cone, Punch Bowl! Nearby is the first macadamia nut orchard in Hawaii. The overviews are paved with railings and easily accessible. The Park offers picnic areas with a couple pavilions and picnic tables. There is a charge for non-resident parking of $7 that can be paid electronically. Resident parking is free. Parking is limited, but there are several parking areas. We had no trouble finding parking mid week. Warning signs tell guest not to leave valuables in the car. One thing to note is that it does get really windy here. There are two parking lots available near this lookout. The one right next to the lookout is very small. It only holds about a dozen cars. The safer bet is to park at the slightly further parking lot with only a five minute walk to the Vista point.
