Koa meeting Cocoa and Joshua at the dog park
    Julia M.

It's a fenced off area with separate places for large and small doggos. There's a view of the Ala Wai, a couple of benches with shade, and it's surpringly well maintained. It's the perfect place to stop at if you plan to walk around/a portion of the Ala Wai with your pup and stop at the dog park. Also, mostly only friendly dogs stay at the dog park, so them, along with their owners create a very friendly dog community, super sweet!! The only bad thing is that it is often out of poop bags (donations are greatly appreciated), and the 'Iolani softball field is right next to the dog park. There is a sign that says "No Animals", and they really enforce it. They get extremely irritated if you bring your dog on the field especially if they're in the middle of practice and you don't pick up the poop!

A gate (that can be opened!) separates the small dog park and the big dog park!

Great dog park right along the Ala Wai. There is half for big dogs and half for small dogs- crazily enough, the small dog side is the place to be! There is a little shade and a great bench. Part of it tends to get muddy at times. Mostly nice dogs and alert owners in my opinion! The best place to park is at the Ala Wai park next to the school and use the bike path to walk over towards 'Iolani. Only bring well socialized dogs to keep this park a good experience for all and remember to bring your own bags to pick up after your pet.

A happy dog is a healthy dog. When our furbabies see us grabbing the chuck it and poop bags, they start spinning in circles and running for the front door. When our usual play area is being used, we head over to this park. Usually lots of empty parking stalls if we get here by 4:30. It's about a 5 minute walk from the parking lot to the park, and the dogs usually do their business by the time we get there. The park itself is divided into 2 sections, to separate the big and small dogs. Not usually enforced though, unless the bigger dogs are rough or aggressive. The ground is bare and patchily grass covered, with minimal shade except for a couple of small trees. One bench in each area to sit on, although at our last visit, one of the ladies brought about 4 extra large planters that she turned over to be used for stools. There is a plastic kiddie pool filled with water that some of the dogs love! A few tennis balls and squeakers are strewn about for anyone to use. The regulars there seem to run a tight ship. Very good about watching for dogs that poop and making sure their owner picks up after them. Good place to come if you don't mind your dog getting dirty. Lots of dirt to roll around in!

There isn't many places you can take your dog to run and be free but this is one I hope stays in operation. I went here as soon as I found out where it was and my puppy had all her shots. The park is secure and the entrance has a double gate so you know your dog won't escape. The volunteers keep the grounds up and they do a pretty good job. Bags for poop are available as well as toys and pans for water. Everyone seems to watch their dogs. If not then others are quick to brake up dogs that get a little rough. Never any fighting just bully dogs. There's some benches on either side of the park. One for the larger dog area and one for the smaller dog area. Only downside is the homeless living in the trees along the water side (Ala wai). They don't bother but it's very unattractive. All in all I love the park and the people that come are friendly. Perfect place to socialize your dog.

This is certainly a place to let your little buddy run and 'be a dog'. There are some receptacles for droppings, however do be aware that the groundskeeping is done by volunteers, and care is required. Support your community and pick up after your dogs, and keep the area in clean order. That being said, the Ala Wai Dog Park is certainly one of a few places in town that is great environment for your dogs. The Dog Park is located behind Ala Wai Elementary School, next to the community gardens fronting the Canal. Parking is available at the end of University Avenue by the School, or at the Iolani School Driveway just off Date Street. Parking is plentiful over the weekends. There are two park areas - one for dogs +20 lbs, and one below 20 lbs. Both park areas are of equal areas with a bench over a concrete pavement, under some shade by potted plants for you to take a load off, and to keep an eye on your dog. Certainly with the traffic over the dog park, do anticipate some dirt and mud spots do exist within both park areas. So if your buddy is an indoor/outdoor dog, consider that you may need to do some feet-washing before he comes back into your home. At the end of my trip here, my feeling is that it's struggling to be maintained, but it's a good setup for your dog. It is an issue for me when given its location, when I come here it's only for the dog park, and nothing else. Nothing much else around, so if I'm taking my dog out for an excursion, it'll be the beach. If it's at all possible, I'd like for the play areas to be much larger than what they have now.

Pretty small park. Here's how it looked in November, 2014.
    Tina L.

I used to love this park. The first time I took Bud here was in November, 2014. The park, I believe, was fairly new at the time, so there was plenty of grass. It was a very good experience, and I enjoyed watching Bud run around and make friends. I continued to take Bud here (among visiting other parks), because of the convenience of the location and hours. I live in town, so driving to this park is very easy for me. Also, there are some days in which I do not get out of work until close to 8pm, and this park is open until 10pm, so it was another good factor. Here's why the park lost stars: LACK OF MAINTENANCE. Today was my first day back after about two months of staying the heck away from this place. I hoped that in the several weeks I stayed away from this park, SOMEBODY would have stepped in to maintain the park. What's the main problem? There is little to NO GRASS left at this park! My dog, being a frequent dog park goer, got very injured from running around in this park one Saturday afternoon in late February. The reason is due to the fact that the grass is almost completely gone, and all that is left is hard dirt. His paws were completely blistered, and all of the skin peeled off! He couldn't walk for two days, and had to be carried in and out of my apartment building just to use the bathroom. Otherwise, he just slept the entire time because he was so miserable. I didn't get any pictures of the blisters, because I was too busy trying to take care of him. I did, however, get several pictures of the park both in November when there was still grass, and today, when the grass is almost all gone. Hopefully this gets fixed soon, because I had such high expectations about this park, but it is continuously proving to be a disappointment. PROS: 1. Location (in town!) 2. Hours (open early, closes late) 3. Has a Water Spigot CONS: 1. Poorly Maintained (depleting amount of grass) 2. Hidden (most people get lost on their walk to even find the place) 3. Size (far too small and gets cramped when busy) 4. Not Safe at Night (bring a buddy aside from your dog) 5. No Shade

After driving all the way out to Hawaii Kai Sunday afternoon to have it start pouring rain, decided to try to venture back towards town to check the Ala Wai dog park (Humane Society dog park closes at 4pm on the weekends, so no-go). No rain in the waikiki area so now just have to find this place... I used the location listed on yelp, but was so confused as to where this place actually is... Saw a few other people also looking for the park as well after entering the strange backwards-seeming one-way entry. I began walking with kiyoshi down the path past the baseball field, community gardens & playground areas... seemed to have been walking quite a ways... still unsure if that was even the right way to go, asked a man near by with a dog if I was going the right way to the park. He said its further, keep going. Walking some more along the path by the ala wai, we finally arrived at the park - all the way down the path, beside Kozuki stadium. Its pretty small, but seemed well kept. There were several small dogs - less than 18 lbs, a lot of toy and mini breeds that you usually don't see at the bigger dog parks here. This page: http://alawaik9playground.com/ provides better info about where the park actually is since the address on yelp is sort of a bit of a walk from the park. Although the park seems to be the smallest of the off-leash dog parks I've been to, there was many dogs in the small dog side & the hours for the park are pretty convenient - 5AM to 10PM. Next time I go, I will keep going a little bit further down Kapiolani - and turn into the park parkinglot on University instead so I can spend more time at the park and less time walking there.

On our way to the puppy park!

Kevin Costner and I love the dog park by our house. He loves to run, play and pee on trees. The big dogs and little dogs are separated so you don't have to worry. It's clean and new. Kevin hasn't gotten fleas or anything from it so yea! I love the walk along the Ala Wai and the nice people at the dog park.

We took notice of its soft opening on January 31, 2020, as we were just next door at the Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park while out on our daily walk. We returned on February 7th to watch its Grand Opening ceremony. Secondly, I wondered about how this off-leash dog park would accommodate different sized dogs and energy levels (much like how the Mother Waldron Park separates children's' activities from the older junior ages and adults) since this dog park is nearly 8,000 square foot swath of land in between Mother Waldron Park's basketball courts and the walkway by Fisher Hawaii on Pohukaina Street. The rectangular-shaped dog park doesn't have a water fountain or separate areas for small or large dogs. Although there are signs posted with rules for the safety of your furry friend or family member and owner and hours of operation along the chain link fence entrance. There should be poop bags available so dog owners should make sure to pick up after their dog. If there's none, I would think that most responsible dog owners carry spare plastic bags. I hope to see more dogs and their human parents spending more time outdoors even during these difficult COVID times. Social distancing between humans is encouraged and maybe even between the furry friends (just in case of possible animal transmission). Maybe we'll see you there as we pass by or stop to vicariously enjoy watching the dogs frolic in this park.

With more consistent cleaning and better enforcement of waste pickup, this park could easily be one of the best dog parks around. Located just across from Kaimana Beach, I come here after my weekday swims to dry off in the sun and immerse in its solitude. When here, the world feels quieter, calmer -- like everything noisy in my head softens to a whisper and the litter of cluttered thoughts melt away with each song of the birds. Maybe it's the mana of the ancients still lingering, guarding the spirit of this cultural sanctuary. A memory of Hawaiʻi from a simpler time, still alive in the bones of the land. Opened in 1877 by King Kalākaua and named for Queen Kapiʻolani, it ranks among the oldest public parks on Oʻahu -- sprawling across about 300 acres. The loop around the park is about 1.7 miles. Originally a Horse Racing Venue, the land was initially created for the Kapiʻolani Park Association, which organized horse racing events for Hawaiian royalty and elite families. The racetrack, called the Kapiʻolani Park Race Track, was a central attraction and helped foster equestrian culture among the aliʻi (nobility). Presently, it's also home to the Honolulu Zoo, Waikīkī Shell and the Bandstand, home of the Royal Hawaiian Band. With Diamond Head towering over the park like a gatekeeper, the park is scattered with all kinds of trees -- coconut palms swaying hypnotically in the breeze, monkeypods stretching wide, and banyan trees casting deep shade for anyone escaping the midday sun. These trees also serve as homes to all sorts of birds: the bold Red-crested Cardinal, the bright green Rose-ringed Parakeet, and the graceful Manu o Kū -- Honolulu's official bird. They're pure white seabirds that nest impossibly on bare tree branches. Of all the trees here, the banyan is my fave. They're spectacular in how they grow -- with long roots that drop from their branches like ropes. When those roots touch the ground, they become new trunks, and the tree keeps expanding outward. What starts as a single tree becomes something that looks like an entire forest. To me, the banyan is a living symbol of community. The strongest among us aren't the ones who stand alone -- they're the ones who grow wide enough to support others. Every branch sends down roots, not to separate, but to deepen connection. Over time, what began as one becomes a sheltering canopy for many. Kapiʻolani Park is peaceful during the day, but it comes alive in the evenings. You'll hear the joyful sounds of kids playing soccer and football, people doing yoga under the trees, and families laid out on picnic blankets under the fading sun. There's plenty of metered parking -- just 25 cents for 30 minutes, probably the cheapest in the city -- but fair warning: spots fill up fast in the evenings. Parking is free on the mountain side of the park. But that also fills up quickly in the evenings and weekends. Peace
