Kalihi valley district park usually belongs to the local residents who call themselves home and use the facilities to play. There's a swimming pool and a gym to play basketball, among other sports.
It is pretty cool to hang out here recently when I could have went home on recent afternoon after a tough day at the office. Truth be told that I came here to hang out with a friend who wanted to hang out at the swimming pool to do laps. I never was a swimmer, but just to hang out and not have to worry about anything but my thoughts is always a good thing. I do enjoy people watching though and Kalihi valley district park decidedly serves that purpose to the letter. I ended up walking around the premises and looked around the park, taking in the beauty and the landscaping that Kalihi valley has to offer. While I would not want this come here after dark, this facility is the real deal and you can do almost anything here. Play with your kids at the pool or do a work out here, as well as just enjoy the open spaces that the city and county of Honolulu had provided for the residents and visitors to this area. Do come here before dark if possible, since the park is in the neighborhood of public housing properties nearby and is often a scene where illegal activities can occur on a daily basis - largely at night. Just got to be careful and you should be alright. For the most part though, the landscaping and the area that the Kalihi valley district park sits on is beautiful and the buildings are constructed pretty nice, especially the gymnasium and the swimming pool itself. On the day I visited, I basically was here for about 2 hours before it got dark and we left the area before stuff tends to happen here. Coming here during the daylight hours will be fine.
Just be aware of your surroundings and you'll have fun here. Kalihi Valley district park is maintained and beautified by the fine folks of the city and county of Honolulu. You probably would not find much of a homeless issue here, but they are around and just need to be careful of any suspicious activity in the park while you're there and report it to authorities. With that said, I watched my friend swim laps around the pool during their free sessions. You would need to call the facility directly for pool hours and for gymnasium hours, if you plan on playing basketball there. The basketball courts are petty cool and it definitely brings me back to my high school days when I could not even dunk a basketball, but I could shoot a 3 pointer without much difficulty. These days, I usually run and run very long while having fun doing so. Kalihi valley district park is located at 1911 Kamehameha IV Road in the heart of 96819 area code. Since this is a neighborhood park, entry fees are non existent and totally free of charge! That is awesome for those of us who want to do something active without having to spend much money doing so. Getting fit here can be very inexpensive, so it's always a good idea to come to hang out here at Kalihi valley district park and get active and fit!
Parking options are readily available here, via street parking. You're basically in a residential area, so anywhere that has a free space without a fire hydrant or somewhere you can't park, you should be okay. If you are like me, bus routes 1L, 2, and 2L come through this part of Kalihi, but you would have to get off on North School Street and walk on Kamehameha IV Road to get to the park itself. Kamehameha shopping center is nearby too, so you could get your food and drinks there before coming to the park for a day filled with fun and excitement at a reasonable cost. The park itself is a wonderful use of land to help beautifully illustrate the artistic side of the city. While my time here was shorter than I wanted, I would like to come back here when time allows. Its definitely a nice park to come here anytime of the day and including weekends too. The park is pretty clean but I would watch out for the homeless people that tend to migrate here from time to time. Still enjoyable for everyone and everyone to enjoy nature and have fun doing so. Come on down and you'll have fun pondering the meaning of life.
