They also have a huge discount section and the kids loved stretching their $5 budget and got a bunch of Halloween and Christmas specific candy cheaply for no other reason than it being the wrong holiday. My husband bought some Amish sourdough bread, but was disappointed with the taste. Upon looking at the label I noted there were a lot of ingredients. Just something to note. They apparently are obviously successful, having spanned many decades of business which I think goes back to at least the '50's. There are pictures of people who sent autographed pictures with thanks for the delicious pickles. I remember one being President Dwight Eisenhower. I believe they had another one from Frank Sinatra. The store has a nice fridge full of sample pickled items to try before you buy which is helpful. We ordered many items and happy with them all, both sweet, mild and hot. You can see the factory through a large window and there are tours which would have been cool, I'm sure. I think it was listed as the #1 or 2 attraction in the area which is why we checked it out. The variety of restaurants or ethnic food available for purchase at grocery stores is laughably low. So i heard about George's International Market and checked out their website. I was really excited to try it because it gave the impression of being "International" and i love a wide variety of foods. I decided due to this to make the long drive into Fort Wayne to check this place out. My first impression of this place was confusion. Just inside the store you find a statue of a lion holding a shield, a statue of Elvis, and a third statute of Marilyn Monroe in her famous skirt scene. I am unsure what this has to do with a supermarket. I then walked into the actual market and was surprised at how much smaller it looks than in the website. I also discovered as I began exploring that its "international" designation is a bit overstated. It does have food from one or two European countries but its mostly hispanic and really mostly Mexican. Was i a bit disappointed? Yes. That said, i did find a lot of food that my culture also loves in here that overlaps. Firstly, i found actual green plantains! Usually in the supermarkets near my home they sell plantains but they are rarely green. To be able to fry some up and have tostones! Yes!!!!! I also found other products my family and I would love including plantain chips, malta, yuca, tamales, Jamaican patties, and croquettas. The croquettas were of the frozen variety and sadly only in chicken, i prefer ham. I was also very happy when I found Pineapple Nectar for my mom. She loves the stuff and hasn't had any since we moved! So i did end up buying quite a bit when I came here and i will likely come back again. I hope they continue to expand what they have available for sale here, though.
