Wagamama is a chain the UK for pretty passible Asian food in Europe. So really 4.5 stars for Asian food starved traveller who's been away from amazing Asian food for almost 3 weeks, more like 2.5 for true Asian food rating. To the food, my husband ordered the chicken katsu curry which is a pretty safe order that he has had before. It is a more consistent choice on their menu. I hear they change their menu every now and then. I had their yaki udon. I almost wanted to try their ramen but their chefs and servers couldn't tell me if they used authentic ramen. lol. They said it was brought up from London. Their udon was fine. It wasn't Sanuki udon for the record. I do like to visit Wagamama when I am in the UK for my Asian fix as they are a safe bet so I will be there again.

They had an excellent choice for a small menu and catered well as Peña has no kitchen, so it's all in the prep. This was The Breakfast Club so had the choice of fresh pancakes or southern grits. I had never had grits before but the pancakes sounded amazing. I opted for the wholemeal pancakes, blow-torched with brown sugar bananas and coconut mascarpone. Oh man it was just heaven. I decided on a wee cheeky mocha from Peña to add to my sweet breakfast. Why not?! It was a lovely experience and I would definitely look out for another Chompsky event soon.

They had a small table set up on the street and on offer was American themed sweet, baked goodies. They had S'mores; 2 different types ~ peanut butter & jam or salted caramel and banana. Also on offer were Blondies (coconut & orange) and Pumpkin Cheesecake Brownies. Yum. All sounded lovely and all priced at £3. We went for one each of the P&J and salted caramel & banana s'more(s) and also I couldn't resist the brownie as I do love a good brownie and cheesecake so combining the 2 is just genius! The s'mores were finished off in front of your eyes with the addition of mini marshmallows and a blow torch. Having never eaten one of these before I was most intrigued...my boyfriend said his P&J one was brilliant and I did like my caramel & banana one but I can't say a s'more is something I would crave (s')more of (haha!). The brownie was really good ~ not quite enough of the pumpkin cheesecake in the slice I had but what I had of it was truly delicious. Maybe could've done with being a tad more moist, but that's just my preference. I am a fan of blondies (being a natural blondie myself, ho ho!) but I prefer the more brownie textured ones as opposed to the cake-like ones. So I didn't buy one of these although the combination of cocnut & orange does sound good. Nice people & lovely eats ~ just what we needed on a Sunday afternoon.

Both for the the DJ and the live guitar playing singer dude.. 5 quid a ticket to book a spot and supposedly entitled you to a free beer or cocktail.. But not for us I am afraid. All we got offered was a red or white wine. I went with red, unfortunately it was echo falls and it was disgusting. Five quid was a rip off for a wine that you can get in any supermarket for a fiver a bottle. After drinking our welcome drink in the reception we got invited to the pool area. It looked really run down, but that was the point. It was a great setting to have a meal in a swimming pool. Unfortunately they forgot the heating. The fiver booking fee should have got you a free balaclava. It was so cold, I expected to see a polar bear wander past at any moment. Once seated we waited around 25 mins for somebody to take our order. We were told there was no lamb left and they were out of the west and piston beers that featured on the menu. Alternatives were Budweiser or Peroni. :( Yes, I have become a beer snob, but surely they could have reached slightly higher than this when buying replacement booze to take the spot of the west they had run out of? Still I went for Peroni and tried to enjoy it, but felt like I had been kicked in the #*%#* when later on the bill showed 4 quid next to it. The food.... Sadly we waited ages as the kitchen seemingly lost power. Some stuff was lovely when it did come. The shrimp and pork toast in particular was great. However I really thought in general it all felt a bit tiny and very over priced. Fish tacos were average. Chicken was good, but could have done with more seasoning. The tomatoes were nice, (Clyde valley tomatoes are epic), the venison mole was Tasty enough. But it was all to small for the price! After the main courses we were still hungry, so ordered dessert. We went for the lotus biscuit one to share. Again it was tiny and it turned out to be the peanut cookie one they had brought us instead. We ended up just eating it as it would have been to long till someone came back around to be able to complain and get it swapped over. Really wanted to love this pop up event, but it was honestly so disappointing. Very understaffed, small portions, poor drink options, pretty expensive and a temperature that would have made Santa feel at home. I am glad I have had dinner in a swimming pool as it sounds cool, but there is no way I would go back to the current location. If it pops up again and you do decide to visit. Say hi to Santa for me and watch out for the penguins sliding about in the ice. A generous two stars.

As others have said, the venue was cool and the food was good, but that's about it. We paid £5 to get in, the spent £25 each on "tapas style" food which amounted to the amount of food we would have gotten as a starter. The portions were miniscule and not very shareable. We each ordered the falafel, two of us ordered the scallop and duck, a buttermilk fried pheasant, profiteroles, drinks and two other dishes I cant remember were ordered. As mentioned before, the food was good, but not worth the money paid. It was so dark in the venue, I couldn't see what I was eating, let alone take pictures. For reference, check out Sophie K's photos, as she took pictures of our food. They offered blankets for comfort as its just about winter out here, but that did little to heat us. We all kept our coats and hats on to shield us from the draft coming in. Great concept if all or most proceeds go to rebuilding the music hall, but the prices were borderline theft on their parts and the amount of food served was not worth the price. I won't be partaking in this guerrilla dining experience again.

I knew I had to come and have a look at the new and improved Buchanan Galleries foodcourt. To say…read moreimproved wouldn't be hard as it was just Super Generic Food Court before hand. The Burger King is still in place, however, so if you feel the need for a whopper, you can still get that. The star are the independent retailers though. I'm led to believe they rotate and change with a few regulars staying, so I'm obviously just reviewing what I had from Surf Dog. There were many options from lots of different cuisines, but as soon as I saw a chilli dog, my mind was made up. With the dog for £6, a side for £3 - I had onion rings, rather than the sweet potato fries - and a can of soft drink for £1, my meal came to a reasonable tenner. The Taste Buchanan set up is pretty unusual in that it's made out to be an outdoor garden, only indoors and on the top floor of a shopping centre. Garden benches and school style chairs are the order of the day, and it's a nice touch not to be presented again with generic seating from Bland Furniture R Us or wherever food courts usually go. After a short wait for my food to be prepared from scratch, it arrived. The chill dog was gorgeous, presented with just the right mix of chilli, sour cream and grilled jalapenos to be a total and utter mess to eat... that's the sign of a good chilli dog, folks. The chilli itself was warm and wholesome, not too spicy so the heat didn't overwhelm the taste of the dog, but the addition of the grilled jalapenos meant you could add extra heat if you wanted. Of course I did, because that's how I roll. The onion rings were light, crispy and just ideal for dipping in leftover chilli and sour cream. I would definitely get a side order of those again! To sum up, I love the idea of various retailers in one place and changing from time to time, if they're all of this quality and value for money, then it's definitely going to be a hit. I should remember though, that there is no graceful way to eat a chilli dog in public, although at least this time, I managed to avoid spilling it down my shirt, which is a bonus and unusual.

What a great concept, and so far the offerings have been top notch…read more The idea is simple enough - rotate 'street food' vendors in a permanent space - giving smaller vendors an opportunity in a prime location, and giving us punters the chance to sample the wares of some places we might not have tried otherwise. I was lucky enough to be there on opening night and have been back twice since and I've not been disappointed with the food on offer yet. On the first night I tried a few of the offerings including bao from Chompsky - I tried two, the garlic mushroom, and the pulled pork, both delicious - and a sneaky slice of pizza from Nomad (part of the Firebird team I think). Ohhh and of course I started with ice cream from Equis (hey, it's the first stall you see....). I didn't get over to Union Waffles (look right as you come up the escalator as it's set back away from the other vendors, nor could I fit in any cupcakes by Paige, but there is always next time! I managed to chat to the guy who runs it (and the others) and the premise is that they will rotate every now and then, possibly more often at peak times, but the goal is to bring local vendors, offering quality food, to the masses. I was back last week to try Surf Dog which was also pretty good, a good quality hot dog with crushed nachos and a nice salsa. Downsides would be the layout, which on a busy Friday lunchtime ends up with a long queue of people in one place not realising that you can queue for each vendor independently, and the major downside was the time it took to get our food. Hopefully just teething issues, it'll be a different setup for most of the vendors I'd imagine, switching from a van/truck at a site, to peak lunchtime in the city centre! Price wise it runs about average for a lunch, £5 seems the average for most dishes which, given it's fresh food (unlike the processed guff next door at Burger King) seems reasonable. Anyway I don't mind paying a little extra to get these kind of options in the city centre. I really hope it takes off and is successful, I know I'll be back again! Top tip: get the app (there are signs all over the seating area) to keep up to date with new additions and rotations!

I'm honestly not sure how to begin describing an event that was probably one of the strangest but…read moremost brilliant I've experienced. It started with a seven course set menu and ended with a man standing on a table playing a saxophone along to house beats in the middle of a bar. Sounds fun, doesn't it? This pop-up street food event was created by 'Mad Chef' - the resident chef at Bar Bloc on Bath Street. For the first time, he decided to create a New York inspired evening of street food, music and fun! The event was hosted by Mini Bar, a tiny, club-like venue that squeezed around thirty people in for this incredible event. The first two courses came as one, consisting of Smoked Corn Chowder and Mad Falafel - fried falafel balls fused with coconut and peanut butter. The chowder, which I didn't expect to like, was salty, smokey and filled with chunks of soft potato and pancetta. The falafel balls were a huge hit with everyone, containing whole peanuts - no processed peanut butter here! Served in street-food style cardboard trays, the food tasted and felt authentic, even the salad garnish was delicious! The next course we ended up waiting quite a while for, but the atmosphere of the place was fantastic and a big screen in the bar was linked to a camera in the kitchen which showed a massive set of decks in the middle of the kitchen, with Mad Chef bouncing around trying to get everything done. When the next course did come out, it was worth the wait, thought not for the faint-hearted! It was the 'Park Slope Patty' - a beef patty with salted caramel, habanero puree, caramelised onions, American cheese and the usual relish. I think it was pretty brave he decided to serve such a spicy burger as so many people just don't do chilli, and this was pretty hot! The great thing was, though the habanero puree was hot, the other elements of the burger helped tone it down and the sweetness of the salted caramel & onions complimented the spice perfectly. Next up, the Vendor Dog, which was one of my favourite courses but also by far the messiest! A little hot dog in a mini brioche bun with fried chilli onions and classic ketchup & mustard. So much flavour in such a little bun! The final savoury course was the Cuban Pork Taco - pulled pork on a tortilla with wedges of fresh orange, lime and a dollop of sour cream. The pork was succulent and delicious and the zesty freshness of the citrus fruit was inspired! The desserts were soon whizzing their way round the room, starting with mini strawberry meringues and home made honeycomb. The honeycomb was fantastic and the meringues were certainly not mini! They were quickly followed by the final course - 'Hubba Bubba' bubblegum ice cream with popping candy. It really did taste like hubba bubba and the little flecks of popping candy added crunch and a bit of fun! By this point it was 11.45pm and I was fit to burst, but the night was far from over! The Mad Chef himself came out to say hello and thank us - using as many profanities as humanely possible - and to let us know that soon, a live saxophone player would be standing on a table in the middle of the room, playing along to the dance beats still coming from the decks in the kitchen. Well, that's one way to end an evening! Just after midnight, with the sound of saxophones and swearing lingering in our ears, we piled out of Mini Bar and headed home. Mad Chef did a fantastic job creating an inspired and delicious menu, all the while mixing tunes and keeping his guests entertained. I can't wait for the next one!

You wouldn't expect a night with the self proclaimed 'Mad Chef' to be normal now would you? And far…read morefrom normal this night was. Initially I was confused as to the reason why he decided to call this little pop up venture "Audio Beef" but it all became very apparent when I stepped foot into Mini Bar. If you were after a quiet candle lit meal and a relaxing chilled out soundtrack to enjoy your 7 course feast well, you may have been a tad disappointed. Instead, Mad Chef and his posse managed to create a club vibe within the tiny Mini Bar. Not content with serving up some 30/40 people with 7 courses of punked up New York style street food, Mr Chef decides to blare out LIVE 90s style Chicago house & disco tunes all night with actual decks set out in the KITCHEN. Accompanied also by a LIVE sax player who got jiggy on the table tops at the end of the night, which made for one the most exhilarating dinners I've ever had. Its fair to say the man's multitasking skillz are other worldly. The dj-ing was spot as the chefs cooked away. All this was relayed out to the punters over a live feed on a big tv screen in the main bar. Its fair to say Mad Chef and his posse were having a right good time dancing about, playing cool retro tunes and, somehow, incredibly, dishing out some top notch grub. So I think I've set the rather interesting scene by now. In order to get into the groove it was probably best to grab a few drinks and go with the flow. At first, I must admit, I was a little unsure, but, as everyone started to relax and get into the spirit of things, it turned out to be one hell of a fun night. Right, onto the food! The menu consisted of 7 small plates, almost tapas style so you could get a flavour for everything without, I guess, getting totally stuffed. The menu was kinda New York / Americana inspired but with some pretty major and inventive twists. Take for example the wonderful corn chowder, but infused with some smokey pancetta, or the falafel with peanut butter and coconut, or Hubba Bubba ice cream with popping candy. My favourite dish of the night however had to be the Park Slope Patty burger with salted caramel and habanero puree. The burger packed an almighty chilli kick but was somehow balanced with an amazing sweetness. Its fair to say everything tasted wonderful and, with the last desert not getting dished up until 23:30 I'm glad I wasn't completely stuffed and bloated by the end of the night. It really was the perfect amount of food all served up by the wonderfully charming and friendly staff of the Mini Bar. If you want to try something totally unique, in terms of food and surroundings then this is the night for you. Mad Chef tells us that street food is all about soul, partying, getting to meet and mingle with new people and the man has a darn good point! This was a fun packed night that will definitely live in my memory for a long long time. A resounding 5 stars to you Mad Chef and your most excellent 'Beef Audio' night!

We went to the 6.30pm sitting on the Saturday night so I was already aware of the good reviews from the Friday night, and it totally lived up to my expectations. Two long tables in the function room of the Glad Cafe, with reggae on the stereo and Bollywood on the big screen. Sitting at one big table encouraged people to chat and the whole place was chilled out and fun from the start. The rum punch didn't have quite the kick I was hoping for but it was yummy (and I was with a friend who was off the booze for January so I got hers as well!). The Sev Puri starter was awesome - lovely and spicy yet fresh as anything. When it came to the main courses, I really struggled to choose between them - I was in a party of three and we ordered everything between us and shared. The Curry Goat was fantastic, but in my opinion it was just pipped to the post by the Vanu Pau, the spicy potato burger served with chilli and coriander chutney and tamarind sauce in a Morton's roll. I'm not sure if that's because my Scottish tastebuds can't see past a dish which is essentially a potato fritter in a bread roll, but it was absolutely amazing. If I worked in the city centre, I'd be in Babu Bombay Street Kitchen every day having one of those. The other two dishes were both perfectly lovely and I'd happily eat them again, but the Curry Goat and the Vanu Pau were my two winners from the night. The ginger cake and chai combo to finish were also fantastic - seriously, there wasn't a bad dish served all night. It was a heck of a lot of food, but it was so yummy that I hoovered it all up and if I hadn't been so full I'd have happily have had more. All the staff present were friendly and relaxed and the evening was great fun. For £20 including the rum punch, I thought it was excellent value for money. The girl I spoke to from the Glad Cafe said this was the first event like this they'd done and they had been waiting to see how it went, but already by the Saturday night they were pretty sure it was a success and they'd be looking to do more. That gets a big thumbs up from me - I can't wait for more nights like this.

It's only on this weekend (Thursday 23 - Saturday 25 April) and there's two sittings each night. We were a little early for our seating at 7.30pm but the place was totally ready to go so we took a seat at the communal table and looked over the menu. It's 3 courses for £18 with a set starter and dessert, and choice of two mains. Now, I am a huge fan of roti canai and thought I'd tried the best one in Glasgow but this one was served with a slightly sweet, coconutty curry sauce which was just delicious. For my main I had the sayur ladeh (veggie curry) which was packed with aubergine at my request (thanks chef!) and the flavour of the curry sauce was amazing. I personally prefer my aubergine cooked really well to the point of collapse, whereas this had more bite to it but it was still a delight to eat. I will admit I had a bit of food envy as I tried some of the beef rendang and that was amazing. Finally, there was fried banana balls. Graeme doesn't like banana and I can't eat ice cream so we did a bit of a switcharoo and we were both happy. The fritters were lovely, super crisp with a nice hint of ginger. Two is the perfect sized portion; 4 was a struggle! Ha! While you're eating you can order drinks etc from Babu which are interesting and reasonably priced. I believe you can also BYOB if you fancy drinking. This was one of the best popups I've been to - it was executed in such a relaxed, calm manner and you'd never have known it was the first night. The staff were all so sweet and lovely, and you could tell they were so excited about the night as well which makes it all the more enjoyable.
