I've missed the last couple of Chompsky pop-ups but this one started on Friday so I was able to make it along. Dixieland is Creole cuisine from the heart of the French Quarter of New Orleans and they're dishing it up at Drury Street's pop up space which is actually on Renfield St if you want to get really confused. The menu is small as you'd expect from a pop-up: jambalaya, pulled pork po' boy, oysters and stuffed peppers. I went for the jambalaya - 4 whopping prawns on top of some of the tastiest rice I've had in recent memory with a slice of lemon and packed with flavour. At first I thought the portion was a little small but actually, it was perfect and delicious for £6. I also tried some of the sweet potato fries which were nicely caramelised. Yum. There's a dessert option too - powdered sugar beignets which I couldn't resist. For £2.50 you'll get two and they're super hot when they arrive and best eaten as quickly as possible. Lovely little pillowy bites of heaven, similar to a donut I guess. If I wasn't so lazy, I would totally go back today for their last day of the pop up. You should go along in my place and make me jealous with your photos. I can't wait to see where Chompsky pop up next time. Note: 15% off when you check-in on Yelp.

Whisky & soju combo. Will keep this in mind...

I'd lived in South Korea for two years and was really excited at the idea of having vegan-friendly Korean food in Glasgow at this event. And... soju! (A Korean spirit.) Sometimes I've bought it from Seewoo (or Lim's on Cambridge St also have it) but it was good to have it available in a bar. I've been to a Korean restaurant in Glasgow on two occasions and once they did a fantastic job on veganising menu dishes for me, and once the idea of putting tofu with vegetables seemed illogical to them. So, hit and miss. Anyway - I loved the Franco's Folly cocktail, I'd never had soju with whisky before, I will be again! The potato tornado was tasty and crispy, the kimbap was good, rice was nice (I love sesame flavourings), and the ddukbokki (rice cakes and veg) was delicious. I would have liked a slightly bigger portion as a 'main', though. Usually this comes in a sauce made with fish in Korea, and it's been years since I've had it, so this was a big highlight. It had the right amount of hotness for me in that I needed water to drink with it. Koreans like their food h-o-t spicy and has caused me a number of embarrassing coughing fits in the past! It would have been nice if the romanisation of the Korean names of the dishes had been on the menu in brackets next to the food descriptions, just for a bit of authenticity. I'm looking forward to seeing what other events Chomsky's do next. I recommend getting there early as we got there around 5pm and had to wait for a bit to get seated and the venue weren't taking reservations (and it was our fault for taking so long to get there as I had planned to go along for 1pm!).

Hoisin and peanut pulled pork bao.

Before they got a residence in Buchanan Galleries amazing new food court, I'd never had the opportunity to try Chompsky. So, after a quick scan of the options at Taste Buchanan I decided that bao was the only real way to satisfy my lunchtime hunger. It was really quiet when we arrived at midday so we took our time to go over the options. With four different flavours available I opted for the hoisin and peanut pulled pork bao. I don't normally go in for pulled pork, especially when they have tempura prawn as an option, but hoisin is one of those giant food beacons that draw me in to a dish. We also ordered one of each side available, sweet potato fries with spicy mayo and crispy salt fried squid. We went for a couple of iced teas to wash it all down too. Our food was ready fairly quickly and it looked as pretty as a picture. The pickled vegetables and thin slices of green apple on my bao were so vibrant and appealing, the pork came in a generous helping with a good coating of hoisin and the bun looked deliciously fluffy. The combinations of flavours worked amazingly together, with an added crunch coming from the finely chopped peanuts. The squid was exceptional. Salty with a nice light crisp coating, but still perfectly tender to bite into. Definitely among the best squid I've had - and I am a complete fuss when it comes to squid. The sweet potato fries were just okay though. I struggled to find any that actually resembled a fry. They were more just small bites of sweet potato and they could have been a little more crunchy on the outside. The spicy mayo that accompanied these definitely outshone them. The only other disappointment was my iced tea. It kind of tasted of nothing. A very slight hint of pomegranate and no peach at all. I drank less than half of this - and considering it was £3 a pop, I'll be taking a hard pass next time. All in all though I had two great dishes from Chompsy and one okay dish. That squid would easily entice me back and next time I'll be trying the tempura prawn bao!

When we arrived at the pop-up at Devils Deli I bumped it to the utterly gorgeous Briony and Lynsay for a small impromptu bloggers summit. As soon as I walked up Briony instructed me to get the Peanut Butter and Jelly S'more immediately to try, with B being my Food Soulmate I took this advice very seriously and had one in my hand within a minute. Boy, where do I even start with this...it was beautiful. Thick gooey peanut butter and tart jelly sandwiched between 2 slightly soft biscuits and served with blow torched marshmallows. Utterly Epic and massive, a great start. Knowing that I couldn't manage anything else I got the rest to take away for later. Next I tried the Orange and Coconut Blonde. The sponge was heavy and dense while staying moist and so flavoursome, with the coconut definitely being the stronger flavour. It was a huge slice and I enjoyed it massively. The Pumpkin Cheesecake Brownie was probably my least favourite, hey we can't love everything right? I like a fudgey brownie as much as the next person but for my tastes this was a little too squiqy inside and I never really got the taste of pumpkin from it. Purely personal thing but I was unable to finish the brownie. I definitely saved the best for last though...the Banana and salted caramel s'more. I don't know what special powers head chef Felicity has but clearly being able to work out my absolute food porn dreams are one of them. To me this tasty treat was perfection, using the same biscuits as the peanut butter s'more which were slathered with creamy salted caramel, layered with big hunks of banana and then topped with blow torched mallows.....it was amazing. I don't like raisins so I didn't get an Oatmeal, raisin and caramelised pecan whoopie pie, but I have heard really great things about it from those who did try it. An amazingly successful pop up by all account and I am already looking forward to seeing where these little food loving gnomes pop up next.

    Delicious mushroom bao
    Lucy B.

I'd heard that the new food court, Taste Buchanan, at Buchanan Galleries was pretty good, so I was keen to have a nosey about. First up HAD to be Chompsky! The menu is small, as you would expect from a street-food themed place, and it's perfectly formed. I had a Mushroom Bao - garlic shitake and oyster mushrooms with pickled ginger and pea-shoots. It was so delicious, honestly I could eat this for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I am eagerly looking forward to the next time I'm in town when I'll be in for another one. And at only a fiver, it's a nicely affordable snack. They have a variety of green-tea mixtures, but I just wanted a bottle of water, which only cost a quid, so I was pleased with that too.

Carrot pancake with berries and cream! And a soy cappuccino on the side

This is my second time catching a Chompsky pop-up event, and I'm glad I didn't miss it! Those pancakes were superb! I ordered the Chompsky pancakes with peach and marzipan and a choco hazelnut shake by Pena (to cool me off after a tennis lesson under the warm sun). My partner tried the carrot pancake with berries and cream! The pancakes were DELIGHTFUL! My partner really liked his carrot pancakes, though they were a little on the heavy side for me. My pancakes with peaches were so good though and I much preferred my choice :) delicious! The shake was so refreshing too! Nothing to complain there :) It took some time for the guys to prepare the food but I assume it's cause Pena doesn't have much space for cooking and they had to improvise a lot which is ok (and props too them). Their friendliness and overall welcoming character also compensated for the slightly long wait. Will definitely keep going to their pop-up events!

Dropped in for a feed at the Chompsky & Co Paint Their New Food Truck pop-up at The Glue Factory last weekend. The toasties all sounded delicious - I plumped for the portobello mushroom, truffled leek and taleggio cheese. It was on good chunky bread and the filling was really rich. I also got to try the avocado, jalapeno and Monteray Jack - well tasty. The cakes were lovely as well - I tried the lemon and lime polenta cake and the brownie. Cool laid back setting, loved the artwork, and the truck was looking great when we left.

I knew I had to come and have a look at the new and improved Buchanan Galleries foodcourt. To say…read moreimproved wouldn't be hard as it was just Super Generic Food Court before hand. The Burger King is still in place, however, so if you feel the need for a whopper, you can still get that. The star are the independent retailers though. I'm led to believe they rotate and change with a few regulars staying, so I'm obviously just reviewing what I had from Surf Dog. There were many options from lots of different cuisines, but as soon as I saw a chilli dog, my mind was made up. With the dog for £6, a side for £3 - I had onion rings, rather than the sweet potato fries - and a can of soft drink for £1, my meal came to a reasonable tenner. The Taste Buchanan set up is pretty unusual in that it's made out to be an outdoor garden, only indoors and on the top floor of a shopping centre. Garden benches and school style chairs are the order of the day, and it's a nice touch not to be presented again with generic seating from Bland Furniture R Us or wherever food courts usually go. After a short wait for my food to be prepared from scratch, it arrived. The chill dog was gorgeous, presented with just the right mix of chilli, sour cream and grilled jalapenos to be a total and utter mess to eat... that's the sign of a good chilli dog, folks. The chilli itself was warm and wholesome, not too spicy so the heat didn't overwhelm the taste of the dog, but the addition of the grilled jalapenos meant you could add extra heat if you wanted. Of course I did, because that's how I roll. The onion rings were light, crispy and just ideal for dipping in leftover chilli and sour cream. I would definitely get a side order of those again! To sum up, I love the idea of various retailers in one place and changing from time to time, if they're all of this quality and value for money, then it's definitely going to be a hit. I should remember though, that there is no graceful way to eat a chilli dog in public, although at least this time, I managed to avoid spilling it down my shirt, which is a bonus and unusual.

What a great concept, and so far the offerings have been top notch…read more The idea is simple enough - rotate 'street food' vendors in a permanent space - giving smaller vendors an opportunity in a prime location, and giving us punters the chance to sample the wares of some places we might not have tried otherwise. I was lucky enough to be there on opening night and have been back twice since and I've not been disappointed with the food on offer yet. On the first night I tried a few of the offerings including bao from Chompsky - I tried two, the garlic mushroom, and the pulled pork, both delicious - and a sneaky slice of pizza from Nomad (part of the Firebird team I think). Ohhh and of course I started with ice cream from Equis (hey, it's the first stall you see....). I didn't get over to Union Waffles (look right as you come up the escalator as it's set back away from the other vendors, nor could I fit in any cupcakes by Paige, but there is always next time! I managed to chat to the guy who runs it (and the others) and the premise is that they will rotate every now and then, possibly more often at peak times, but the goal is to bring local vendors, offering quality food, to the masses. I was back last week to try Surf Dog which was also pretty good, a good quality hot dog with crushed nachos and a nice salsa. Downsides would be the layout, which on a busy Friday lunchtime ends up with a long queue of people in one place not realising that you can queue for each vendor independently, and the major downside was the time it took to get our food. Hopefully just teething issues, it'll be a different setup for most of the vendors I'd imagine, switching from a van/truck at a site, to peak lunchtime in the city centre! Price wise it runs about average for a lunch, £5 seems the average for most dishes which, given it's fresh food (unlike the processed guff next door at Burger King) seems reasonable. Anyway I don't mind paying a little extra to get these kind of options in the city centre. I really hope it takes off and is successful, I know I'll be back again! Top tip: get the app (there are signs all over the seating area) to keep up to date with new additions and rotations!

While it looks a bit like a typical kebab shop where you might get chips and pakora and pizzas too, the menu sticks to authentic Middle Eastern food with sharwma and a range of starters including baba ganoush, tabbouleh and fatoush (a type of salad). The starters are all around £3 and there's a mixed starter on the menu for £7.50 so thinking it might be like, y'know, a mix of starters, I asked about that but the guy said they didn't have any. So I ordered baba ganoush and tabbouleh starters but they didn't have any tabbouleh either, so I ordered baba ganoush and hummus. For mains, I ordered a chicken shwarma and a lamb shwarma - I spent some time in the Middle East in 2003 and I'm always on the hunt for a Scottish chicken shwarma that's just like the real thing. The total was around £16 for two starters and two mains. All the bread is freshly made and really tasty. The shwarmas were pretty good, not drop dead amazing but better than your average takeaway kebab. The hummus was good and the baba ganoush had fresh green pepper chopped through it which I've never had before but which gave it a fresh, sharp taste. While we were in, it was quite busy and the rest of the clientèle were all (I'm guessing) Kurdish so they were either all friends and family or this place must do something approaching authentic food. There were a few small tables you could sit at but it's definitely more of a takeaway place. The main thing I didn't like was that there was an overflowing rubbish bin just as you walked in the door. To be fair, it seemed to be overflowing with empty cans and bottles rather than food waste, but it's still not the best sight to see when you walk into somewhere serving food. And given that it was early on a Saturday night, I was surprised they had run out of some of the options on the menu. The food was better than your average kebab shop takeaway and did feel pretty authentic Middle Eastern. I'd probably go back if I was in the mood for a shwarma as there isn't much else around this area, but it didn't blow me away.

The Sev Puri starter was awesome - lovely and spicy yet fresh as anything. When it came to the main courses, I really struggled to choose between them - I was in a party of three and we ordered everything between us and shared. The Curry Goat was fantastic, but in my opinion it was just pipped to the post by the Vanu Pau, the spicy potato burger served with chilli and coriander chutney and tamarind sauce in a Morton's roll. I'm not sure if that's because my Scottish tastebuds can't see past a dish which is essentially a potato fritter in a bread roll, but it was absolutely amazing. If I worked in the city centre, I'd be in Babu Bombay Street Kitchen every day having one of those.
