Normally when reviewing a gas station, I would go into my schtick copy and paste format, but this…read moreone was different. What matters to me is that we were travelling from Hilo down to the green and black sand beaches and "somehow" I may have made a tactical error regarding how much gas the car had and the extreme lack of availability anywhere close by. I mean the nearest station coming from Hilo is....40 miles away in Volcano? Either way, this place was very open and it saved my bacon. Simple and clean four pump setup. This is very much an easy off/on route 11. I was going to go inside and pickup a provision or two but refrained only because the inside had quite a few people browsing, checking out and hanging out. The pricing is what it is when you're visiting Hawaii. You need to suspend reality on that one until returning home. Overall, this place is a nice oasis in an otherwise dry desert of choices.

The flavor was normal, tasted good, but the texture and crunch made it 1000% enjoyable. I also got the chile because apparently that's the thing to get when you come here. It wasn't what I expected, but that's not a bad thing. Their spin on chile is different. It's like spaghetti sauce, jambalaya, and chile all made a baby together. It felt like a home cooked meal. I am actually looking forward to getting it again.

My wife and I stopped by Hirano Store around 10:00 a.m. on a Thursday morning to grab a quick bite…read more We picked up a bowl of chili (without rice) and a bowl of mac salad. Since both items we ordered had been prepared beforehand and didn't require additional cooking, our order was ready in about three minutes. Overall, I thought the chili was just ok. Although all the ingredients in the chili were properly cooked, the chili as a whole lacked depth of flavor. Additionally, when I opened the container, there was an unappetizing amount of oil that had pooled to the top. I am not used to seeing olives and mushrooms mixed into chili, but these additions added some more texture to the chili. The mac salad was a big miss for me. I thought the macaroni was slightly overcooked, the salad lacked salt, and there was just too much mayo mixed in. I'm genuinely curious if I ordered all the wrong items, because other folks seem to really enjoy food from Hirano Store. Based off of my single experience today, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit Hirano Store again.
