I was on the fence about a lot of things regarding KK. I've seen this stand for months and have waited for some reviews. The plexiglass obscured what was being offered in the chafing dishes, and I had other ideas of food for the day most times I was here. But after good experiences at another Caribbean place, I wanted something to compare it to. And while considering this review I couldn't quite decide between 4 or 5 stars. As soon as I got home I tasted everything and realized it all was very good and in the 4.5 range at least. Value and portion size probably weighed my decision to go 5.
I ordered a large platter of rice and beans with curry chicken and fried plantains. After a suggestion on the Mac n cheese by the chef/owner, I ordered that as a side. The platter was huge. Fall off the bone chicken and by my reckoning half of a bird( a big one too) in a mild yellow curry. Well cooked potatoes and the odd carrot filled it out. The rice was perfect too, small grains but all intact and with a sweet onion flavor, very good by itself but even better with a bit of the sauce. For lack of a better term, the southern style Mac and cheese was very good. I don't have much luck when ordering this or felt it just might not be my thing. This version is definitely my thing. Multiple cheeses with a distinct parm flavor, but a bit sweet too. Crusty bubbly top, and although "dry" by saucy M&C standards, not dry at all. I'll be taking home a side every time I visit. The plantains were good too, but needed reheating in oven to perk them up.
The chef/owner is very friendly and fun to talk with, but also doing a lot if not all of the work running the stand. I wish I had known about the beignets (see menu) There's a little private seating area if you'd like to eat inside, and other seating options in this section of the market too. I can't wait to return to try more things! read more
