Imagine experiencing the feeling of never being able to empty your bladder, having to urinate every…read more20-30 minutes, and having to wake-up out of a deep sleep 3-4 times a night in order to urinate. This describes what I was experiencing for roughly six months. This condition was causing me to be extremely irritable ( due to a lack of quality sleep) and less productive at work (frequent trips to the restroom). Due to my stubbornness, I let the condition persist until I could no longer live with the discomfort. Therefore, I made an appointment with my physician for an examination. My physician conducted a prostate test (I will spare you the details), diagnosed me with an enlarged prostate, and told me that I should reduce my water intake. In addition, she suggested that I take a medication called Flomax. This medication would suppress the symptoms, but had a myriad of side effects. After complaining that the medication was causing me to be extremely drowsy, my physician referred me to a urologist. Shortly after my conversation with my physician, I received a call from Dr. Golden's office. I scheduled my appointment, which was roughly a month and a half away (I assume that this is because he is a specialist). Leading up to the appointment I was extremely nervous and did not know what to expect. I advise anyone who may be in a similar situation to stay off of the internet at this time (WebMD almost sent me into a nervous breakdown). When I arrived (they ask that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment), I was warmly greeted by Dr. Golden's assistant. Her temperament was very enthusiastic, personable, and soothed my nerves. After completing the new patient intake form, she brought me in to check my vitals and administer a urine culture. After doing the aforementioned tests, his assistant conducted an ultrasound of my bladder (to determine if I was emptying my bladder). Shortly after her departure, Dr. Golden entered the room. Although personable with a great sense of humor, he was very knowledgeable and asked the right probing questions. Dr. Golden explained to me that after providing the urine sample (which was 15 minutes prior to his arrival), there was roughly 12 ounces of urine remaining in my bladder. Therefore, it was determined that I was not fully emptying my bladder. In addition, Dr. Golden was able to narrow the diagnosis down to a condition called urethral stricture, which is a narrowing of the urethra. This is caused by an injury to the penis or scrotum, and causes a decrease in urine stream and discomfort while urinating. Afterwards, Dr. Golden's assistant directed me to a room where Dr. Golden would perform the most painful procedure that I have ever endured. Dr. Golden inserted a thin camera called a endoscope into my urethra. The camera would allow Dr. Golden to see the intricate details of my urethra. After inserting the camera, Dr. Golden pointed out that I had a significant amount of scar tissue restricting the flow of urine through my urethra. Hence why I had a weak urine flow and experienced difficulty emptying my bladder. Being that Dr. Golden's goal was to send me home with some relief, he proceeded to insert a flimsy, thin metal wire into my urethra. Dr. Golden used this instrument to clear the scar tissue blocking the areas. This extremely uncomfortable procedure lasted for roughly 20 minutes, and had me highly anticipating the moment when he and his assistant would remove the inserted devices. Shortly after the removal of the instruments, I made a bee-line for the restroom. This may sound ridiculous, but Dr. Golden and his assistant offered me one of the best Christmas gifts....the ability to urinate with no restrictions! My post-procedure urination was strong (stream) and fulfilling. I cannot put into words the discomfort that I experienced prior to this procedure; therefore, I will never take for granted the ability to urinate freely. Before sending me home, Dr. Golden and his assistant scheduled me for a Retrograde Cystography. So far, I have been sleeping through the night with less trips to the restroom and have been experiencing a healthy urine stream. Thank you Dr. Golden and your team for calming my nerves, listening to me, and providing me with some relief!

I was an add-on so it was done late in the day, I think maybe 7pm. He was KIND, ARTICULATE, ATTUNE TO MY SITUATION AND MY ANXIETY (this was my third hospital admission for stones in the past 3 years). He checked on me at 7am the morning after surgery, discussed lab results, plans for followup medications and arranged to see me the following Wednesday to remove the stent from the ureter via office cystoscopy. I explained to him that I dread office cystoscopies and find them traumatic. His understanding and attunement regarding this issue did mitigate some level of the psychological angst of having that procedure and may have subsequently slightly lessened pain with the followup cystoscopy. His office nurse who attended was spectacular and she too was very reassuring and understanding. Once I gathered my wits after the cystoscopy, he discussed with me possible options to reduce reoccurrence of these stones. I was aware of many of these issues, dietary etc, but the fact that he took the time to re-review them with me was helpful.

I gave Golden State Urology five stars because I couldn't see any reason not to. Everyone there was…read morekind and professional and I don't know enough about the process to not give them the benefit of the doubt. My experience below is not to judge as much as to inform. I believe the 'procedure' was called a urolift but I am not positive and it was the first step needed to take care of my bladder and kidney problems. I will update this review as the process continues but the other patients in the waiting room have only had praise for Dr Sethi. Anyway, here is my story. It only took a couple of days of massive pain in my side to decide to go to the local emergency room and find out what the hell was wrong me. After running a few tests they decided I had kidney stones, kidney disease, and something else wrong with my kidneys. For some reason they did not think that was the source of the pain so they prescribed some pain killers and suggested I visit my primary care physician to set up an appointment with a urologist. That led to an appointment with Dr Sethi at Golden State Urology. I thought he was going to go over my blood test and the information he received from the emergency room at Methodist Hospital. I even brought in a kidney stone the size of a very large pea that had fallen out of my penis the weekend before. He had something else in mind though. I was instructed to go to the bathroom to empty my bladder and come back to the room, drop my pants to my knees and cover my junk with a towel. A few minute later Dr Sethi entered the room and very nonchalantly said "this might feel a little cold" and stuck a camera up my penis. Holy mother from hell that burned! The next thing I knew, I was looking at a very swollen, sad looking bladder with another kidney stone that looked like the twin of the one that had fallen from my penis the weekend before. After kindly removing his camera from my penis, Dr Sethi instructed me to empty my bladder and return to the room for a ultra sound that revealed that my bladder did not drain properly and I would need a 'procedure'. Fast forward three week and I returned with Ida (my significant other) to have this "procedure'. I was asked if I would be interested in paying an extra $100 for nitrous oxide and after a little discussion I decided a valium and some local pain killer would be fine. My advice, take the nitrous. A few minutes later the man in charge of administering the drugs and setting up the "procedure" brought a valium and some antibiotics to me in the waiting room. It wasn't too much longer before I was lying on a table without my pants. The man in charge of the meds and setting up the 'procedure' then tented my upper body so I could not watch what was going to take place and stuck some local up my penis. Let me tell you, that was when I knew this was not going to be any trip to Disneyland. I made sure to inform Ida that she was in charge of the family jewels since I could not see what was going on. Whatever they stuck up my penis, I don't really know but I think it was a big, hard, stiff tube and it hurt like hell and I suddenly felt like I needed to take a hot, burning, bloody piss. I was told they were draining my bladder but the rather unpleasant sensation I was getting felt more like my bladder was going to overflow. I was told that was from the pressure. Then it felt like the doc stuck something else up the tube and was moving it around trying to properly position it while the burning sensation and the pain increased immensely. Why did I not choose the nitrous? This could have been much more pleasant if only I had chosen the nitrous oxide. I was then told I would hear a snap and not to jump. "Snap"..."ouch, that fricking hurt". It felt like the tip of my penis where all of the nerve ending are had been slammed in a mouse trap while a chunk had been hacked from my inner organs. Doc Sethi; "I told you not to jump when you heard the snap." I think I heard a hint of humor in his voice. Humor is always a good thing when you are being tortured. Short story, after repeating the above several times, the 'procedure' was mercifully over. Now it was time to get my prescriptions. You guessed, I was given my prescriptions and sent to my pharmacy to stand in line. Fortunately, I had thought ahead and brought a pair of depends so, when I was standing in line with my bladder and the tip of my penis burning and not sure I could control the urine and blood from doing what it pleased, at least I had the comfort of know it was being contained and concealed. The pain killers mainly just made me feel drugged and did very little for the pain. It was very painful to urinate for the next few days and it was even more painful not to.I could blame this on the doctor but I am pretty sure he would have done much more if only my medical insurance had paid for it. I don't know? Maybe I just have a very low pain tolerance these days?

We were finally able to get in months later. Let me start by saying you have to pay to park for an appointment...okay, not ideal, but I get it. Front desk only said a few words to me, and that was to ask for my copay. Other than that, I just got papers shoved in my face and was expected to sign everything before walking in, which gave me literally two minutes to scan everything. The paperwork says you will have to pay for the physician visit and facility, but they don't state just how expensive that truly is (I'll get to that later). My child saw the NP/PA who was super nice and so was her assistant. Spent maybe all of 20 minutes in there and we were out the door with a prescription to try. Prescription didn't work, so the PA/NP told us on our follow-up zoom that we could proceed with surgery and the average amount with insurance and being medically necessary would be around $700. The wait time for a medically necessary surgery was far less than their three year wait for an elective surgery. Okay, I could swing that amount, gave me time to save it up. I then got a bill in the mail for almost a thousand dollars for in person office visit, facility fee, copay for zoom appointment, and zoom physician phone call. Mind you, we spent maybe 30ish minutes all together in person and on zoom. Yikes, that is a huge bill when we have great PPO insurance. Son was scheduled for surgery, but nobody bothered to call us, they instead sent a message to my sons myhealth letting him know surgery was scheduled - that's all, no other information. Normally, that would be fine, but he doesn't access his online account. I then received a text just about two weeks before the surgery is scheduled with an estimated amount of $2,000+. No phone call until six days before surgery, but only to ask where the money is. Umm, I didn't know we had to pay before surgery is complete. I have never had to pay anything before any medical treatment and insurance payment has been made. That is something that should be explained to the patient or patients' parents with a phone call, not a message sent through an app for a minor who can't log in or even knows there is a log in. To boot, the lady who called was rude, and treated me like a number. Just overall very unhappy with the lack of communication and extremely unhappy with all the hidden fees. I could have saved myself money and time had I known how they charge.

Having worked in the medical field myself I firmly believe in the big picture when caring for a patient. I was spoken to in a loud voice about why my father could not take two pills. I repeatedly told the doctor my father could not keep anything down. We had even gone to the ER for this. He did not care. My father had a bad fall before his next appointment. He was in pain and Javidan insisted on performing an in office procedure. I stepped out of room to only hear Javidan belittle and raise his voice my father. I heard "Your a hot mess!
