Imagine experiencing the feeling of never being able to empty your bladder, having to urinate every 20-30 minutes, and having to wake-up out of a deep sleep 3-4 times a night in order to urinate. This describes what I was experiencing for roughly six months. This condition was causing me to be extremely irritable ( due to a lack of quality sleep) and less productive at work (frequent trips to the restroom). Due to my stubbornness, I let the condition persist until I could no longer live with the discomfort. Therefore, I made an appointment with my physician for an examination. My physician conducted a prostate test (I will spare you the details), diagnosed me with an enlarged prostate, and told me that I should reduce my water intake. In addition, she suggested that I take a medication called Flomax. This medication would suppress the symptoms, but had a myriad of side effects. After complaining that the medication was causing me to be extremely drowsy, my physician referred me to a urologist. Shortly after my conversation with my physician, I received a call from Dr. Golden's office. I scheduled my appointment, which was roughly a month and a half away (I assume that this is because he is a specialist). Leading up to the appointment I was extremely nervous and did not know what to expect. I advise anyone who may be in a similar situation to stay off of the internet at this time (WebMD almost sent me into a nervous breakdown). When I arrived (they ask that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment), I was warmly greeted by Dr. Golden's assistant. Her temperament was very enthusiastic, personable, and soothed my nerves. After completing the new patient intake form, she brought me in to check my vitals and administer a urine culture. After doing the aforementioned tests, his assistant conducted an ultrasound of my bladder (to determine if I was emptying my bladder). Shortly after her departure, Dr. Golden entered the room. Although personable with a great sense of humor, he was very knowledgeable and asked the right probing questions. Dr. Golden explained to me that after providing the urine sample (which was 15 minutes prior to his arrival), there was roughly 12 ounces of urine remaining in my bladder. Therefore, it was determined that I was not fully emptying my bladder. In addition, Dr. Golden was able to narrow the diagnosis down to a condition called urethral stricture, which is a narrowing of the urethra. This is caused by an injury to the penis or scrotum, and causes a decrease in urine stream and discomfort while urinating. Afterwards, Dr. Golden's assistant directed me to a room where Dr. Golden would perform the most painful procedure that I have ever endured. Dr. Golden inserted a thin camera called a endoscope into my urethra. The camera would allow Dr. Golden to see the intricate details of my urethra. After inserting the camera, Dr. Golden pointed out that I had a significant amount of scar tissue restricting the flow of urine through my urethra. Hence why I had a weak urine flow and experienced difficulty emptying my bladder. Being that Dr. Golden's goal was to send me home with some relief, he proceeded to insert a flimsy, thin metal wire into my urethra. Dr. Golden used this instrument to clear the scar tissue blocking the areas. This extremely uncomfortable procedure lasted for roughly 20 minutes, and had me highly anticipating the moment when he and his assistant would remove the inserted devices. Shortly after the removal of the instruments, I made a bee-line for the restroom. This may sound ridiculous, but Dr. Golden and his assistant offered me one of the best Christmas gifts....the ability to urinate with no restrictions! My post-procedure urination was strong (stream) and fulfilling. I cannot put into words the discomfort that I experienced prior to this procedure; therefore, I will never take for granted the ability to urinate freely. Before sending me home, Dr. Golden and his assistant scheduled me for a Retrograde Cystography. So far, I have been sleeping through the night with less trips to the restroom and have been experiencing a healthy urine stream. A week ago, Dr. Golden solved my BPH problem by performing a laser ablation called the Green Light laser pulverization of the prostate. The surgery itself went perfectly, I was home the same day with a urinary catheter. The catheter was removed 2 days later and immediately my ability to urinate was greatly improved. From the beginning to the end, I experienced absolutely no pain. Dr. Golden and his entire team were extremely professional and did an excellent job. read more

Beware of this Dr. Golden. He does not listen to his patients needs. He doesn't explain the side effects of Green light procedure. He acts like he knows everything and when you question him he avoids it and becomes rude and mad. Big mistake for us going to him at the first please for my husband's surgical procedure. Following up with him after surgery was a fight itself. Him and his office never replied to our calls and messages repeatedly sent to them via calls. He's very very rude and makes remarks that can be offensive and shameful. We told him that my husband still has a hard time to urinate after surgery and he's response was "you have to play with it". After 2 years of the surgery done by Dr. Golden which did not solve the problem, We finally found a Urologist that really listens, takes care of his patients and actually solves the problem rather than making it worse. He listened and was not afraid to explain (in layman's terms) the pros and cons of various procedures; then, recommend the best course of action for me. I am now 4 weeks post-procedure, and I cannot express how good it is to sleep most of the night. How nice not to void so often while going about my daily routine, not to suffer pain every time I begin to urinate, and so much more. I was referred to Dr. Golden because I've had on and off issues with what others had believed to be a kidney stone bothering me. Parking is easy to find in the large lot adjacent to the medical building. Appointments are easily made upon referral via phone. Follow up appointments, if necessary, can be made on the Sutter app or over the phone. Henrietta at the front desk is clueless and rude. I waited for several minutes to be helped as she made an appointment for another patient. No biggie. She then proceeded to pretend I didn't exist until it was convenient for her. After checking me in, an elderly woman needed assistance. She belittled her and was so rude to her it made me sick to my stomach. The medical assistant that roomed me was polite and professional. Dr. Golden came off as rude, snobby, and stuck up. After quickly reviewing my CT scans he said that it is not my kidney stone bothering me but couldn't seem to pinpoint anything else. I understand and respect sometimes there are medical mysteries but have some empathy and treat people the way you'd like to be treated. Needless to say if I need future assistance from a urologist it won't be from him. read more

Update: I was contacted by a representative of Sutter Medical who requested all of my husband's information so that another review could be conducted. I just got off the phone with Tammy at Sutter Medical who reported the results of the review: Although Pam at Dr. Golden's office quoted me $1397.20 as the cost for the procedure, Sutter Medical will not honor that rate because I did not get it in writing. When I asked if I COULD have gotten it in writing in 2015 when my husband had the procedure performed, Tammy said that she doesn't think so. So I did everything right when I requested a quote, but nonetheless, Dr. Golden's office (which is under Sutter Medical) will not honor it. Instead, we are still responsible for the additional $600 that Pam from Dr. Golden's office mysteriously did not take into consideration when she gave me a quote. Tammy told me this was a case of "he said, she said." I asked if they had even spoken to Pam during the review, but Tammy didn't know. How is this a case of "he said, she said" when Tammy doesn't know whether or not anyone at Sutter Medical even asked Pam about the conversation I had with her in September 2015? This is clearly not a case of "he said, she said." Rather, it's a case of what Sutter Medical says, regardless of the fact that they were not involved in the call I had with Pam, an employee representative of their office. I have no recourse. He was more interested in selling us a vasectomy then listening to my husbands concerns about a prostate infection, which he actually had. Then he recommended some book that seemed very new age. So today I thought I might go "outside the box" and write some non-food reviews. I've written several reviews of home repair work revolving around our recent move to a new home. Another "home repair" worthy of reviewing was my decision to do the 'ol "snip snip " as in the joy of a vasectomy. I did a google search of doctors specializing in this in Vegas and narrowed it down to two. Since Dr. Golden was near my home, I called for a consult. Met with the Dr. - he seemed like a good guy so let's do it ! Very straightforward procedure - pre op I had to do a little "clean-up" which mainly involved some scissors and an electric razor. The nurse gently did a little more trimming . After a few shots in the region for numbing, let the games begin. It was painless though the mind does play games, especially when you feel what is best described as tugging that occurs. I was out the door in less than an hour. I was given pain pills but did not use - one of my friends gladly accepted the pain pills for her daily habit. Follow up visit a few weeks later - all systems are in working order .... I'm drawing a blank on cost - I believe it was around $600. Obviously, I will not return, but I do recommend Dr. Golden should you need this procedure. and sorry, no pics ! read more

I was initially reluctant to get a CT scan but after he explained the importance of having one and the limits of my previous ultrasound findings I'm glad I had one. My husband is about 3 weeks post op after having robotic prostate surgery. His recovery seems to be going remarkably well so far... He came home the following day after surgery, and has been doing better each day. We are waiting for tests to confirm that all of the cancer was removed but I have a good feeling that we are going to be okay. Dr. Golden comes off very confident, which to me is a plus. He is direct and gives an honest view on what to expect. Dr. Brian Golden is one of the very best Doctors I have ever seen. He has changed my life for the better in many ways. I was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer. My internal medicine doctor referred me to Dr. Golden. First I was given my first appointment date for 10 days out. I told Dr. Golden that if I do have cancer I really don't want to wait 10 days to find out. His office called me back within 15 minutes and told me to show up tomorrow morning. After my cystoscopy he confirmed that I have a very large aggressive tumor and explained in detail how he was going to remove it. During the seven day wait for surgery I emailed the Doctor several times with questions and he returned the emails back within hours with the answers to my questions along with links to different medical journals where he arrived that the answers. When you have a life-threatening situation it is so important to these answers and get them timely. Removing tumors from the bladder wall is a delicate operation as the wall is very thin and if the doctors pierces the wall the cancer will move outside the bladder. If this happens I guess you better start getting things in order. However if you don't cut deep enough the aggressive cancer will grow back and you start over. Fortunately Dr. Golden's skilled hands removed the tumor. There where now ill side effect from this surgery at al. Three months later another cystoscopy showed that the tumor was gone and had not grown back. I have known friends that have had bladder cancer and they either were burned so bad from the chemo or it just didn't work and the enviable happened. So as far as I am concerned Dr. golden gave me back my life and I will be able to see my Grandson become a young man. At the next follow-up Dr. Golden suggested a process that would take care of BPH , another condition I have had for years. Any man over the age of 50 knows what a problem an enlarged prostrate is. After another few week of several emails from me with questions, same as before they were all answered within hours with data to back up the answers. So Dr. Golden preformed the procedure and it was absolutely painless with now ill effects at all. Within three days I could urinate like I was 20 again. Bottom line is this man is my savior and I own him my life. I know that I could never re-pay him for what he has done so I decided post this letter so that others in this situation will know which doctor to trust. read more

I was hospitalized in August 2009 with acute kidney failure and required dialysis almost every day for two weeks. Dr. Brian Golden was called in to consult on my case and after reviewing my films, he said the problem seemed due to my prostate blocking the bladder and that caused pressure to hurt my kidneys. In the operating room he placed stents in my ureters and evaluated my prostate and bladder with a scope. He told me that I had a "humongous" prostate. He recommended that I have a procedure called GreenLight laser surgery. He said he would laser away the inner part of the prostate, which was causing the obstruction. He felt this would ultimately relieve the pressure on the kidneys. Before this procedure, I was receiving dialysis treatments three times a week for four hours per session, or TWELVE hours each week. Dr. Golden's thorough, knowledgeable explanation of this procedure and willingness to answer all of our questions so completely, gave us the confidence and peace of mind that we needed in order to move forward. I believe with all my heart that had I not followed the advice of this amazing man, I would not have seen and continue to see the progress in my overall health. Words cannot express the gratitude that I feel for Dr. Golden. Because of him my quality of life has dramatically increased. The surgery was performed on an outpatient basis. Dr. Golden said everything went as planned and I went home with no discomfort whatsoever. I immediately had more success emptying my bladder, which did relieve the pressure on my kidneys, allowing them to begin to do their job again. My dialysis treatments were gradually reduced in time. Ten months later after surgery, I'm still on dialysis, but thanks to this procedure, only once a week for just TWO hours. Dr Golden is an excellent urologist. His bedside manor is either perfect for a guy like me, or he's just great at reading people. He didn't rush my consult and he answered every question I had about the procedure and other urological concerns. He also didn't think it was strange that I was interested in the process and wanted to watch the whole thing. If I still lived in Sacramento, I would go to him exclusively for urology. The procedure went quick, maybe 15 minutes, only minor tugging, no pain. He uses a rad atomizer to inject the anesthetic, it isn't a hypodermic needle, not that I would have minded, but it makes it safer. The reason I hired him to do this is that he leaves the testicular end of the vas deferens open. That he's a bad ass is just icing on the cake. My name is Nick Fortuna; I'm 64 years old, and a professional musician. For many years I had an elevated creatinine level in my blood, as well as intermittent pain in my right flank area. My primary physician thought the elevated creatinine was caused from excessive working out, and the pain was a slight case of arthritis in my hip, but I thought it was something else. In 2008 I made an appointment to see Dr. Golden. After looking at my medical records, he noticed that my creatinine level was high. I told him that I had to go to the emergency room one night because the pain became overwhelming. There, I was tested for kidney stones; the test was negative. Dr. Golden thought I should have a scan of my kidneys. The scan showed the right kidney was smaller than the left and was functioning at a lower level than normal. Dr. Golden diagnosed a ureteropelvic junction obstruction (narrowing where the kidney drains into the ureter). He recommended that a robotic pyeloplasty surgery would solve the problem. He told me all the details about the procedure, including possible risks. I asked about how long it would take to recover, and he said a few days. One day after the procedure I was up walking with almost no pain. Five days later, I was on a plane to play a show in Chicago! Since the surgery, my kidney function is much improved, and I haven't had any more pains in my flank. My thanks to the expertise of Dr. Golden and the Da Vinci robot for fixing my kidney problem. I decided to have a green light TUR in March, 2012, just before my 70th birthday. Half my life had been spent waiting to empty my bladder. Now I was retaining about 500cc when I thought I was done. Dr. Golden did the procedure in about an hour and I went home right away. He took the catheter out 3 days later and I immediately went from taking 5-10 minutes to semi-empty, to 15-20 seconds to completely empty! UNBELIEVABLE. It has been about four months and the only problem I have is having to buy porcelain repair for the inside of the toilet. :) No need to sit and wait, just be sure you are standing back far enough that you don't overshoot. Arrogance in a Doctor shows that they are more concerned with their paycheck than helping a patient. He is rude, over bearing and very unpleasant. People come to you for help, not to be lectured, talked down to or brow beat. I had first seen Dr. Golden in February 2014 for evaluation for Greenlight laser surgery to treat BPH (enlarged prostate) which he specializes. I had talked to Dr. Golden who recommended Greenlight surgery, after researching the procedure, I discovered it was the minimum evasive surgery. I knew that the surgery would have to be performed by a highly skilled surgeon according to what I have read. On 08/12/2014, the surgery was performed and I feel great. I had to have a catheter for a couple of days and after the catheter was removed, I had a strong flow and continuous stream that I had not experienced since I was a teenager. I had very little bleeding and clots and continued to drink lots of water per doctor's orders. It has been a week thus far and I have not experienced any symptoms of erectile dysfunction either. Thanks to Dr. Golden and his surgical team, pre and post there the best. You may encounter some communication issue with the office staff, but do not be discouraged. Dr. Golden got me in for a consultation in the 3rd day of serious pain from a KIDNEY STONE. He was slammed busy that day but took the time to help me understand why I was in such pain, prescribed medication to made the pain go away and even scheduled a surgery to remove the stone if it didn't pass on its own. It DID NOT PASS. I had to have the stone removed in a surgical procedure. His staff scheduled the procedure and he did the surgery as scheduled, in evening, once again squeezing my procedure in an obviously otherwise busy schedule. I am a physician myself and had suffered from BPH for years. My previous urologist did not want to do anything and finally I had to find another urologist. I am writing this review as Dr. Golden was recommended to me from my family physician (Dr. Yeates). After reviewing my PSA Levels from multiple blood tests, it was determined that I had Prostate Cancer. Dr. Golden was very straight forward, and after my needle biopsy confirmed my diagnosis, I decided upon surgery (removal) vs. chemotherapy. (My father also had prostate cancer, so it was apparently inherited). Dr. Golden performed this surgery on me using the latest technology with the DaVinci (robotic). The surgery took 4 hours. My recovery time was exactly "24" hours. I was up and walking 6 hours after surgery. If you don't plan on having any more children (I am 56 years old) I highly recommend this procedure. I am 100% cancer free and back at work exactly 3 weeks from the date of my surgery. Dr. Golden and his staff have been more then helpful answering any and all of my questions.
