I have suffered with weight concerns for many years and was ready to explore the idea of Bariatric surgery. Dr. Patching really takes the time prior to surgery to educate his patients and really focus on underlying issues, so you are better prepared for the drastic difference in lifestyle after surgery. They provide coping skills that will ensure you are successful using this new tool. I started my bariatric surgery journey with Dr patching 9/2017. With lots of amazing support I was eligible for gastric sleeve and had it done 3/5/2018. In 1 year I have lost the weight of a person, and dropped 11 dress sizes to a size 4. Dr Patching is an amazing surgeon. He is supportive, understanding, and very knowledgeable . He and his staff guide you through the process from start to surgery and for life. I have recommended many others to him and my mother has even had surgery with him! This was a very unfortunate experience. There were so many things I feel Dr. Patchings should have done to make sure my surgery would have been successful. First I would start by saying he never required me to lose any weight. He had me do a food diary for the first month and just looked at it told me what I should cut back on. Then I would do phone appointments for most of my 6 month appointments which were super nice since I didn't have to miss work. Not once did he do a blood panel on me the whole 6 months. He did a blood panal a week before my surgery but didn't view my results till my pre op appointment which was 2 days before surgery. My sugar levels were high in my urine so I almost wasn't able to get the surgery cus he stated he couldn't do the surgery with it that high. Asked me if I was diabetic which I said no but if he would of did blood work 6 months prior I could of known I was pre diabetic and I could of worked on getting my glucose levels down. Luckily I did another glucose test the day before the surgery and they went down (still high but down enough that he felt comfortable doing the procedure) so he cleared me to get the surgery the next day. I saw that my liver enzymes, where high and mentioned it to him but he brushed it off and said that's common in over weigh people. He never had me do a liver shrinkage diet the week or two prior to my surgery which is super important since obese people have fatty liver which make it enlarged. He had me do a liquids diet only 24 hrs prior to my surgery. So the day of my surgery I went to the Methodist hospital to get the Gastro sleeve procedure. They put me under and put 5 incisions in my stomach. he went inside where all my organs are to try and do the procedure which he couldn't lift my liver up to have a good view of my stomach to preform the Gastro sleeve. My liver was too enlarged for him to physically lift it up to do the Gastro sleeve. I woke up from anesthesia to him talking to me saying he couldn't complete the Gastro sleeve do to my liver being to enlarged. Then he left and I didn't hear a word from him. I called the office the next day really upset since he never even called to check on me as his patient and to actually talk to me about everything that happened. I felt like I was just pushed aside and left with These incisions on my stomach. He still wants to do the surgery down the road but I honestly don't trust a doctor that shows not care about my well being. I feel I was looked at as easy money and he was trying to get me through and get that pay in his pocket. I hope no one ever goes through this and whatever you do make sure you do a liver shrinkage diet prior to this surgery or your setting your self up for failure since this doctor isn't making sure to take all the steps to make sure you are healthy enough and fully ready to get the Gastro sleeve. read more

Where are all the horrible reviews of Dr Patching all over the internet? There used to be SO MANY. Patching put a lap band on me many years ago. It did not work out so well because everything I ate got stuck so I had it removed. He is condescending and rude. He also left surgery clips in me which show up in x-rays. He removed my gallbladder and I got a gut infection so bad I was hospitalized twice. I would not recommend this surgeon to my worst enemies. read more

After getting an Upper GI they found I had an eroded lap band and a hiatal hernia. If I would have stayed with dr patching who knows when i would have found this out. When my hips went out due to severe osteoarthritis, my orthopedist said he would not do total hip replacement surgery until I lost weight - a LOT of weight. Within a week I was in an introductory group meeting with Dr. Steven Patching, specializing in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Dr. Patching is very serious about morbid obesity and obesity killing Americans. His true interest is pulling you back from the brink of death with bariatric surgery and giving you a new lease on life. He rejoices in your success and you will too. He started me on a diet of 1500 calories per day. Sure you can cheat, but it's only hurting you. The weight started to come off. Then I dropped down to 1200 calories/day. Eventually, 1000 calories/day. (Exercise is an important part of the diet-do the best you can.) I was then ready for bariatric surgery - a gastric sleeve. Under Dr. Patchings supervision I lost 34 pounds before bariatric surgery, proving I could keep the diet going and lose the weight. 4 months later after surgery I was down to a total loss of 70 pounds. My orthopedist was ready to operate. So, in less than 1 year I lost 70 pounds, had my left hip replaced, and am on track to my ultimate weight goal of 160. Losing weight and getting stronger every day. What's not to like? The surgery was EZ-Peasy. I had no residual stomach pain from the surgery. I was up and moving immediately which I guess not everyone does. Many insurances and Medicare cover the the costs of laparoscopic gastric surgery. The trick is finding a great surgeon. The best thing I ever did was hook up with Dr. Steven Patching! After your surgery you will have a life partner keeping you on the straight and narrow - Dr. Patching. He's there to help you stay on your path with Labs required at regular intervals to make sure your body is doing well. Dr. Patchings office is a positive place. I can't recommend him enough. This is the best thing I ever did in my life! In fact, this surgery saved my life. Remember, though, bariatric surgery is just one of the tools in your weight loss tool belt. I was referred to Doctor Patching due to a ongoing stomach hernia and GERD. My first appointment to see him was within a week which was great. Most specialists you have to wait over a month to get in so I was really impressed by that. Within a month I had my surgery performed. Everything went as smooth as can be and Dr Patching was great at explaining the procedure. His staff was easy to work with and very helpful with getting all the required documentation in order. Dr. Patching is a miracle worker. I have had a hiatal hernia along with GERD, vomiting and related stomach issues for over 40 years. My previous doctors would say I had a hiatal hernia and give my meds to relieve my symptoms. I took the meds without thought of consequences. The meds were a contributing factor to my kidney disease. When I was referred to Dr. Patching, the first thing he told me was he was pissed at the previous doctors for not suggesting the surgery. Professional, compassionate, thorough and brilliant. I did not come to Dr Patching to have him charm me, I came because my primary care doctor told me he was the best in his field. I had been so thoroughly and completely prepared for the bariatric surgery by Dr Patching and his team, that I had no lingering doubts or questions. I met with a shrink, a nutritionist, had an ekg, a chest xray and a heart test before Dr Patching would even consider surgery. I was asked to keep a diary of my food for months so he could see where I needed improvement. I had to exercise and diet to lose weight before the surgery to show a commitment to the process and to be healthier for surgery. I attended support meetings before and after surgery and met with a bariatric nurse to discuss every possible question I might have. I was given a tour of the hospital floor where I would have surgery, recovery and reside after surgery. There was never a moment when I felt that Dr Patching was in the bariatric surgery for the money. Never. His passion for changing lives is evident. His office staff is professional and friendly. Of course, you get what you give. And as far as Dr Patching "yelling" at me, never happened. Maybe if you put on your big girl panties and take the process seriously enough to follow the instructions you get, to achieve YOUR goal, not Dr Patching's, you wouldn't waste time looking for excuses. I had sleeve surgery in Nov 2013. I switched from a horrible Doctor (Afshin Eslami: do yourself a flavor and avoid him all together cause he's all about $$$; 6 or more surgeries a day?) I too found Dr. Patching "rough around the edges" I just chalked it up to doctors being doctors (thinking that they're Gods)? What I have realized is I don't have to accept poor treatment from ANYONE in the medical community!! I have lost the weight and in doing so I've found my self worth and it's amazing ;) In addition to dreading going to see Dr. Patching, his office admin person (I guess that's what her job is?) is rude and extremely FAKE!! She tries to come off as sugary sweet; trust me when I say that is false. She's rude, passive aggressive and elitist (maybe it's a prerequisite to work in that office?) lmao Someone said something about the front office staff, who seemingly puts up with bs I can't even deal with They have a high turnover, which makes sense when you deal with these kind of people! I will say that this fact affects everything because I went in for an appointment in Nov, they happened to be "faxing" at the time I was to pay my $15 copay and she said, "oh, just pay next time" cause we can't run your card when we're faxing... huh? Okay, the doctor said come back in 4 months. My brother was in the ICU and I couldn't make that next appt. I called yesterday (5/25/17), which is when I got yelled at (lol). They threatened to send me to collections for $15 WTF? I said, I'm just going off of what your staff said. Her response was, "you could've saved us money from sending you statements!" I said, "you could've saved money by using some of Dr. Patching's vacation money to purchase an independent credit card machine" hell, they could just use an iPhone with an attachment! Special! Also, what office today can't run your credit card when they are sending/receiving a fax? Welcome to the dark ages! Christy was adamant that this is standard practice? If you'd like to yelled at ("can you let me talk, just listen to me, God.") give her a call and ask her about it. After her yelling I decided, I'm done. I said how can I get a copy of my records, I'm going to find a different doctor, she didn't bat an eye and said, "just have your new doctor request your records." It's all about the money for this practice. That and Dr. Patching's numbers; he's very concerned with his percentages and outcomes. Dr patching and his staff are all amazing! I had my gallbladder removed by Dr Patching in July 2019 and then had bariatric sues in December of 2019. Dr Patching truly cares about his patients not only before and during surgery but he follows your progress lifelong. The follow up care is very important to make sure that you care for your new self not only physically but mentally. In this process of preparing for the surgery, we saw many different doctors to ensure I was ready for it including Phycologists, nutritionist, and anything else needed for you specifically. The monthly support group with his Nurse Kate is great and helps you to stay on track before and after surgery. I still see Dr. Patching and attend the regular monthly support group and I'm 2.5 years out from surgery. Before I lost the weight I was on high blood pressure meds and had diabetes. Dr. Patching and his team made sure I didn't just get surgery, but rather that I was READY for surgery. He said in the beginning that he doesn't operate on everyone, and this isn't meant to scare people or that he is a hardass. This is invasive surgery, a serious thing! To operate on someone who isn't ready to make the changes is counter productive. If you are ready to commit to you, he is ready to commit to you too. I'm only a week out from surgery but nine months out from when it all began... it's a marathon not a sprint, it's a tool not magic... and I am so thankful for Dr. Patching for helping me reclaim my life back. Dr. Patching is nice enough especially when things are going right. If you have complications however, that is another story. He is difficult to reach and I felt sidelined. I'm not so sure of his 90% success rate. My surgery was one of the undocumented failures. I had Nissen fundoplication surgery for a hiatal hernia and acid reflux caused by the hernia. I think I was a poor risk for surgery because, due to low swallowing ability, he could only do a half of a wrap (stomach around the esophagus). It worked for about 6 weeks and now I have acid reflux again. A catscan shows that things have "loosened up". After a lot of pain and healing, I must now go to another specialist to see what my options are next. Very unhappy about partaking in this surgery (in general) and don't believe that Dr. Patching has a 90% success rate, as I was told, previous to surgery. read more

Dr. Patching is not warm and fuzzy. However, I really don't care about that. I had gastric bypass surgery in August 2003. He was straight forward and called a spade a spade. If a person does not want to make a life style change and commitment about changing their eating habits, then that person needs to go to another doctor. Dr. Patching has an excellent success rate because he actually cares about the patients future....not just the money. I lost 110 pounds and because I actually became too thin after the surgery, slowly gained back 20 pounds and have not gotten fat again. I was 252 pounds at 5 ft 2in. He saved my life...period. I would say that Dr. Patching was an A student in med school. I would rather have a serious, no nonsense doctor who knows what he is doing that the C student doctor who tells you what you want to here but doesn't really know what they are doing or really care about your future.
