Bread , Qabili Palaw and much much more

I've never been to Afghanistan , but coming here to Kabul Kabob House is like being in Afghanistan as I would see it on YouTube channels. The food is so fresh and so hot once it comes out. I ordered for 3 people and we got soooo much tasty fresh Afghan food. Please come here and experience what I just experienced. 10/10 words can't describe how everything is just remarkable.

My large meal. Wow

Amazing meal, I drove by on the way to the car wash and saw so many people out front. Came by 30 minutes later and saw on Yelp that they had very good ratings. Asked my buddy in NYC if he approves of the menu items which he did. LOL Ordered a few items and they came out in large family style portions! :-) lamb, beef, and chicken and mantoo with chicken curry. Way way too much food and ended up taking a lot home for leftovers. Great customer service, excellent and fresh tasting food. What is there not to like? For sure will return!

So my friend brought me here saying not many afghan options in San Diego but this was zabiha halal. We got here the place was very nice, not packed but that is ok. We got the menu and sat down. We ordered an afghan burger, one beef kabob with bread, chicken tikka kabob and chicken shaami kabob and chapli kabob and bolani and shamsi kabob as well. The bolani came after well at same time as main items but we were hoping it to come first as an appetizer, it was ok not the Best in terms of texture but it was flavored well, could have been a bit spicier. The rice in the dishes was not good at all for an afghan standard, I've had good afghan food in the Bay Area in NorCal so this was very dissapointing. The chicken kabobs were also not juicy and had a plastic ish look on them to describe it. The chapli kabob had no flavor and was like very similar to a shaami kabob. The fries were also soggy as well. Overall the afghan food standard is very low in San Diego and would recommend they (chefs) go up to NorCal and try out places like de afghanan in Fremont for comparison. For the prices they had the quality was not worth it. But atleast there was no music so 1 star for that. Hopefully they can fix the food quality asap.

AFGANHAN foOd is super delicious and one of my top favorite foods now I TRIED THE WHOLE MENU The rice with rasin's is something I would of never had tried before trying other dishes and so good. Sweet and savory If you want a culinary treat.... try here Everything is bomb

Lamb Tikka kabob

Mom and Pop shop located in El Cajon main street. This place only been open for a month. They follow all covid precautions. Sitting inside and out but limited. They are opening a market inside the store (it will be good). The lamb was good not gamey and juicy. The beef shami is ground beef in a kabob. This was flavorful and not dry. The Currys was good to mix with the rice. Tiny salads came with the meal. But the game changer was the Naan. This bread was good. When waiting for the food people were coming in for take out and ordering huge portions of Naan (taking 9 to 10 breads) I wish I took a picture on the size if the bread and it smelled amazing. A must try and if your shy to explore....cone for the bread Support your local mom pop shops

$35 what a joke

I've eaten here in person and got better service. I did their delivery service and look at this picture. They charge you more than $20. By the time you get your food you're spending 35 bucks for some rice. What looks like hamburger the whole thing is a joke I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Beef tikka cube

We ordered beef tikka and lamb tikka, the taste is terrible . It was poorly marinated . The taste of lamb is so strong and disgusting. Not fresh beef or lamb . Very small cubes. I will never eat here again

The chapli kabob meat was raw and chicken curry was not even close to a curry. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.

Since we were going to be in Hillcrest, we chose Khyber Pass - and wow, what an incredible decision. This was easily some of the best food I've had in a very long time. We started with the Bolani. Absolute perfection. It had a beautiful crunch, perfectly seasoned filling, and none of that sogginess I often run into with Bolani elsewhere. We could've ordered another plate and been thrilled. Next came the Aushak with ground beef: one of my all-time favorite Afghan dishes. Think of it like delicate leek-filled ravioli topped with savory meat and tangy yogurt. It hit all the right notes. We also shared the Kofta Kabob, served with grilled vegetables and fluffy basmati rice. The seasoning was spot on, and the meat was juicy and tender, similar to Persian koobideh, but truly memorable in its own way. Our server recommended the Afghan Yaghoot Chalao (Cherry Curry) with chicken. Yes, cherries! Sweet, sour, rich, bright. I had to resist the urge to literally lick my plate clean. And then: the Qabuli Palao with lamb. I do not like lamb. My friend loves it, so I agreed...and I'm so glad I did. I genuinely loved this dish. The saffron-coriander rice with carrots and raisins was aromatic and comforting, and the lamb was tender and flavorful. If you're hesitant about lamb, trust me, this dish might convert you. Portions were generous, we came hungry, and still left with leftovers. I also ordered the house-made Doogh, a mint yogurt drink. It's not for everyone, but it's pure comfort to me. We finished with hot tea infused with cardamom, black for me, green for my friend, and it was the perfect close to a perfect meal. I told our server that this food was even more delicious than what my mother makes. I'm Afghan born and raised in San Diego. That is not a compliment I give lightly. I believe the restaurant is under newer management since around 2020/2021. I last ate here in 2015, and even back when it was on Convoy in the late '90s, and this is the best it has ever been. I highly, highly recommend Khyber Pass to anyone: adventurous eaters, first-timers, comfort-food seekers, well everyone. I'll definitely be back, and next time I'm saving room for dessert.

It felt very fancy and was one of the most exotic things I have eaten in a long time. We also got the dolmas (grapes leaves) and the Bolani (turnover stuffed with leek and potatoes) as an appetizer. The dolmas were ok, but the bolani was exceptional, like a leek and potato quesadilla but lighter. It was hard to put into words. Just order it and enjoy! Lastly, for drinks we got a Cherry Blossom Tea (Sheer Chai). Again, it tasted like nothing I have ever ordered before, which is hard to do because we are adventurous eaters. It tasted like cream straight from the cow mixed with a cherry blossom-y and strawberry-ish Chai flavor+ black tea flavor. One of the best drinks that I have experienced in 2025 by far. For the La Jolla neighborhood and how fancy the inside feels, the prices were similar to any regular sit down restaurant. Quite the bargain for the bouquet of flavors and beautifully executed dishes that we had. I would definitely recommend them.

We managed it by having part of our group jump out to get in line while we waited for a spot, a strategy that worked perfectly since we were seated within just a few minutes of walking in. The restaurant itself is beautiful, featuring clean white marble and modern lighting. It has a high-energy, "efficient ship" vibe. The staff is everywhere, and you'll hear a "symphony" of shouted orders and instructions that makes the whole place feel alive and incredibly productive. Seeing the constant stream of people picking up to-go orders was our first clue that the food was going to be excellent. The Food We ordered for a party of seven and found the portions to be very generous: The Platter for 3: This was the perfect way to sample five different types of kebabs. Every meat was seasoned beautifully and cooked to perfection. This came with a salad. The Qouzi: This was the standout for me. It's a unique dish with a wonderful blend of textures, the crunch of fried almonds on top paired with massive chunks of stewed lamb. The lamb was so incredibly tender I could literally cut it with a spoon! To top it all off, they offer free Arabic tea, which was the perfect finishing touch to a heavy, savory meal. Final Verdict It's rare to find a place that is this busy yet runs with such precision. Great food, beautiful ambiance, and a lively atmosphere. My family and I will definitely be back!
