Since our pup had spent his entire life living in a kennel (and didn't know about grass, cars, walks, toys, peanut butter--anything!), we had our work cut out for us. And we're first-time dog owners, to boot. Tricia was recommended to us after I posted on a community Reddit page. She promised to be our one-stop shop for dog help, and she's more than lived up to her promise. Not only did she help us potty-train our one-year-old pup and teach him basic commands, but she's helped us with everything from figuring out doggy daycare, grooming, pet supplies, etc. We see her once a week at our house or at a public place and also answers tons of questions from us via text/email in between sessions. Not only is Tricia great with our pup (he ADORES her), but she's great with us, too. She's super professional and prompt, and is helping us gain confidence as new dog owners. I'd highly recommend her to anyone (and have already recommended her to several friends!).

The staff is personable and looks out for the dogs. The dogs are matched with playgroups that work best for their personalities and play styles. They put a ton of time and effort into making sure each dog maxes out on fun while staying safe and happy. I feel very comfortable leaving my dog here and the hours of operation make it convenient to do so. I will say that the prices are significantly higher than what I'm used to paying for the same quality of care, though I can't blame them too much from a business perspective (not a lot of competition in C'ville). If they lowered the cost per day by even $5 I'd definitely consider switching to twice a week!

Just know that they have a lot of people to help, and patience goes a long way! Here are three areas I will comment on: Fostering: The people who work here are very knowledgeable and care about their animals, and the cat were fostering right now is a total gem. Fostering is totally free, and they provide all the materials you need. They don't allow you to meet the animals ahead of time, so definitely be intuitive reading the foster board. Please look at the medical fosters too! Many of them ar totally healthy, like our cat, and are recovering from minor non contagious issues. The one we have is totally friendly and a great cat. Strays: I brought in one a couple months ago and the spca was able to microchip and check him to see if he was neutered. I brought in a second stray yesterday morning and called to check on him and the worker was so personable and we had a long conversation about his health. I was concerned they would be bothered with me calling to check but was surprised to find the total opposite. ALSO - they have pens in the back specifically for anonymous dumps. I absolutely hate when people drop cats off (I live in the city of cville so it happens all the time), but PLEASE take them to the spca instead. You can do so anonymously but it's so much more humane than leaving them on the street. Adoptions: the prices are really reasonable, and while I haven't adopted (yet), I know fostering is a great way to transition into adoption. I'm not sure theyre doing meets with the animals because of covid, but fostering is a free way to see if the animal fits in your house and you can adopt at any time. Overall, I love the SPCA and would always get a dog or cat from here rather than a breeder.

The folks in here work so hard to get these furbabies rehomed. They do a really good job with…read moreraising awareness and looking after all the animals, and try their best to get animals in foster homes so they aren't in the shelter the whole time. They're a no kill shelter and often partner with local businesses for events. Their work hours recently changed to 12-6pm, Mon-Sun.
