The front desk staff said very little as I arrived and weren't particularly friendly, even though the place was deserted.. Once in an exam room, I was disappointed to see how dingy and dirty it was. There were no other pets or owners there, so it wasn't the case of not being able to clean adequately because of being very busy. A vet assistant came into the room to take some basic information from me, and before we had even seen the vet, they were trying to sell me their wellness plan, which I declined. Eventually, the vet came in to examine my pet. Again, they were trying to sell the wellness plan. The vet assistant held down my pet for the exam in a very cold and forceful way that I've never seen anyone use before, and my pet was very calm and there was no need to grab her that way! The vet recommended some dental work, and gave a very vague estimate for the amount that it might cost, which was between hundreds to thousands of dollars... I was told that I would be given a printed overview of the potential costs, but that never happened. While checking out, I also requested documents from our other pet's visit a couple of weeks before, which had also not been provided. And for a third time, the staff attempted to sell me the wellness plan. Between the sales pitches, the disorganization, the unsavory presentation of the office, and the rough way my pet was handled, I was absolutely certain by the time I left that we would never come back here. I am very happy to say that I did a little bit of Google searching and found another vet closer to Charlottesville with very high ratings, and we've been much happier there.

Our guy had been in the lonely hearts club since he had been at the shelter more than 6 months. That meant that his adoption fee was only $20! What a bargain for a dog that has been neutered, had his shots, a microchip & revolution flea & tick medication. If we had found a stray or been given a puppy we would have undoubtedly spent more than $500 on those things. Certainly the shelter is overwhelmed at the moment. The staff is doing the best that they can & most of the staff and volunteers are fostering one or more pets at home in addition to their good work at the shelter.

If they were just in it for the money they would take in new clients, so by not taking on new client's they are able to give there existing clients the best care they have to offer. It has been two full years since he set foot on the property, but can still give details regarding the time we spent volunteering for this organization. Mary and her amazing staff run a tight ship, putting the care of a few hundred animals first in their lives. The facility is clean and cheerful, and there is no sadness seen in the eyes of the many many creatures that call this facility home. Dogs are kept one to two to a fenced run, and are walked daily by a long list of paid staff and volunteers. Cats are kept in two separate buildings, according to need. They have fewer volunteers, but those that come can easily find themselves buried in one kitty pile after another while grooming and socializing the cat population. Caring for Creatures is a no kill shelter, and they work hard to find the perfect adoptive families for their animal charges. We knew quite a few families who had adopted from CfC, and all sang Mary's praises. If you have some spare time or money, a donation to Caring for Creatures would be a fine way to spend what you can. They are a deserving organization.
