Plus, our cat Blu isn't an easy boy to handle. He typically doesn't like anyone outside of myself and my husband. Even he behaved without hissing, hiding and biting. When I arrived for our visit, Kim, the front desk person greeted me and made me feel at home. Then Lisa, the wonderful technician, escorted me back to the very clean exam room she had sprayed with pheromones so Blu might be more relaxed. It must have worked. I've never seen Blu not hiss and hide at past vet visits. Dr. Yokoi came in, and Blu immediately sensed her gentleness and demeanor, as he did with Lisa, the tech. He actually sat at Dr. Yokoi's and Lisa's feet and let them pet him. UNHEARD of at any past visits. Dr. Yokoi took the time to explain and answer all questions that I had, and offered good advice in several areas of the check up. I never felt rushed. This a difficult experience to share. When Animal One opened for business the service model was one…read morein which their entire team engaged with pet parents and potential clients. They were wonderful, compassionate, and kind when our dog had to make the journey across the rainbow bridge. However, more recently their service model has changed to being impersonal and unreliable. Multiple times now we have taken our pooch in for preoperative testing at a substantial cost each time. The clinic has failed to follow up and schedule the procedure, which we were told they would do. When we have called to inquire, the front desk has no record of the information and suggests we should make a new appointment, for a fee of course, to get things figured out. When we ask to speak with the Doctor, we are told they are too busy to return our call and we should book an appointment. We have had really good and not so good experiences with this veterinary practice. We are now looking at being $1,000 into preoperative testing. The current service model appears to be about maximizing their revenue and has lost the connection with the human who is paying the bill.

I have been bringing my dogs here for five or six years, and I have always been thrilled with the…read moreservice I have received. At one point, I had a pitbull-mix (very pittie looking) and a Chow coming here for daycare, and when I picked them up, at no appointed time, both were out with the other dogs. Now I have a lab and two little ankle-biters (figuratively) who have been in both the day care and also boarded. When I give them blankets, the blankets come back to me washed and dried. They feed whatever diet I provide. The two little dogs are very shy and not terribly social, so the staff at Uppity Pup take care to visit them in their kennel and to let them out only when things aren't crazy on the floor. The facility has always been a comfortable temperature when I visit. My lab used to go to another boarding facility in Shingle Springs. When I first took him there, he was happy and excited to go. After a few months, I almost had to drag him in through the front door. I finally found out that the owner's dog was a bully and that the owner let him get away with it. It took my dog a long time to get over that bad association (and he still has issues with not particularly liking the company of other dogs) there, but I am happy to report that he goes to Uppity Pup willingly (albeit with that look they give you that makes you feel like they are abandoning them). When I pick him up, he is typically happy and tired. When I have to travel for extended periods, I always ask (and get) special arrangements so that my two little dogs can be within visual range of my lab. I usually bring refrigerated homemade food, and I once had to bring a week's worth of meds, as I had a dog (the pitbull) who was still being treated for a rattlesnake bite. Everything was done as I instructed, and I have even had the staff call me about feeding when my instructions were not clear. The staff doesn't typically volunteer information about how my dogs did, when I pick the pups up, but if I ask, I get a detailed answer, which means someone is paying attention. Recently, I asked about socializing the two less-than-social pups in my keeping, expressing my concern that if something happened to me, I would want the dogs to have a good chance of being adopted, and that they would not show well at a pound if they were terrified. The owner said very simply and sincerely that I didn't have to worry about that, because her staff would assist in the placement of any of their clients' dogs, should it be necessary. I don't know if that is true or not, but she didn't have to say it, and it made me feel very good about using their services. In short, I have never had a bad experience here, with five dogs and approximately five years worth of both daycare and boarding.

Her coat is in good condition there, she has been active and her behavior is normal. The staff are long standing, friendly and take good care of the dogs. I am writing this review to warn other pet owners about our experience so they can make informed…read moredecisions. We discovered a tumor on our dog, and she was diagnosed with cancer. As you can imagine, this was devastating. During our consultation, we were told that due to her age and potential surgical risks, she could potentially live for some time without surgery. Based on that information, we made the heartbreaking decision not to operate. We were told that the mass could rupture externally. However, we were never informed that it could rupture internally or that a sudden, catastrophic decline was a possibility. Shortly after the diagnosis, the mass ruptured internally. When we called the office, we were told to "watch and see how she does." There was no urgency conveyed. However, after doing some research, I learned that internal rupture of a tumor is often considered a medical emergency. We insisted on bringing her in. The clinic was busy and we waited. When she was finally seen, we were told she likely had only days left. We were heartbroken but prepared for a gradual decline. Instead, within hours of bringing her home, her condition rapidly deteriorated. She became immobile and began passing blood. We rushed her to an emergency vet later that evening. She began seizing, convulsing, and was clearly in extreme pain. Her body was shutting down, and we had to make the decision to euthanize her that night. What made this even harder was feeling completely unprepared. We were never informed that internal rupture or a rapid, catastrophic decline could occur. Had we understood the full risks, we may have made different decisions to prevent the suffering she experienced in her final hours. We also found their pricing to be significantly higher than other veterinarians in the area. Since this experience, we have transitioned to another local vet who has provided more thorough communication, compassionate care, and noticeably more reasonable pricing. The difference in both cost and quality of care has been night and day. That night was one of the most traumatic experiences of our lives. Watching our dog suffer in that way is something we will never forget. I hope this review encourages others to ask very direct questions about internal rupture risks, emergency scenarios, and worst-case outcomes when discussing serious diagnoses, and to compare pricing before committing to care. 1 star.
