A year ago this rating and review would have been better. I had been going to Elk Creek since I got…read moremy dog 7 years ago as a puppy and was very satisfied. A year ago my dog started with a itching problem and he had scratched himself bald spot near the tail and the rear back. Took him in, they gave him a thorough exam and they thought it was an anal glad issue as it was a little inflamed and I could see the logic of that. They took him back and shave some of the hair around the bald spots that where infected so they would heal better and cleaned them up. They gave me antibiotic and inflammatory. All good with this visit with the vet we had always seen since we first visited 7 years ago. Things heal over the next few month he was still itching, but nothing that caused bald spots. Then came round two and he scratched himself open ever worst. I made a new appointment. This time I saw their newest Vet Dr. Mann. She had a bad bed side manner and a bit unpleasant. I wasn't really happy interacting with her at all. She didn't really look at my dog that much and interacted less. She asked me a few question, gave me little information and sent me home with a antibiotic and . The inflammation went down, but the itching continued when it was done. This time I tried shampoos to help the itch. I had some success, but in another several months he had a bad itch outbreak and we were back. I asked not to get Dr. Mann this time, but when I went to the appointment I was given her. This time she examined him even less and gave me nothing, but some gauze with a solution she said they use in surgery. Was kind of unset after that. I massaged them about the itching a few weeks later. They told me that Dr Mann had given me options, but I turned them down, I told them I was give no option. They gave me the option then and I picked a allergy injection. I was on it for four months with no real change from what I had been seen. itching off and on and once he caused a bald spot, until the end of February. He then got the worst reaction yet two weeks into the the fourth injection. At this point I should have found a new vet, but gave them another try. Again I asked to not get Dr Mann. I got there and we were give a just a vet tech. She looked him over a bit more the Dr. Mann, but not as much as much as the vet I had always seen in the past. The vet tech then looked at me and said that "we have no idea what is causing his itching". I really wanted to say something rude at this point as I was frustrated, but didn't. Just took the antibiotics, an allergy pill this time and left. Once the antibiotic were done the itching returned and the new allergy med was doing nothing. I messaged them about this and I got radio silent from them. So I start to look for a new vet and something I could help with on my own to control some of the itching. I started use a blend of coconut oil and Shea butter on his hot spots and that would at least calm them down over several hours. So far the new vet has been much better them my last three visits to Elk Creek. She asked me all kind of question, got on the floor with my dog and examined him very well. She could smell a yeast smell from him, even smelled his ear, she said for one he either had a fungal infection or it was most likely yeast build up on his skin from him lick and biting at himself. She told it could a thyroid issue and what to test that so she was changing something it wasn't, it wasn't so they took him off and cleaned him up. The vet went off to work out the bill as I was limited on money at the moment after the last three visited to the old vet. Anyways she seems to have figure it out, we still need to adjust the meds going forward. I wish that Elk Creek was still like that, but from my last three visit they aren't. Sad

Our two year old cat was misdiagnosed and the tech gave us the wrong information several times. Dr.Mann is totally incompetent. We lost our kitty. I would never recommend this vet to anyone.

No notification to former clients. My two cats needed vaccinations. When I got home the rabies certificates showed the exact weight as 3 years ago. I call to get the current weight and it had never been recorded! I had to make 3 calls to the office to get a summary of the visit concerning dental surgery for my one cat. Then I find out no surgical procedures are done at the West Grove location! The main location is in Newark, DE. All the positive reviews on here are prior to the new owners taking over. BEWARE!!!!

Horrible place to take any animal. I requested a refill for my dogs medication. They didn't call…read morethe meds in or even call me to let me know that that wanted me to bring her in before refilling her script. It took days to get an appointment for her and by that time my dog had already gotten very sick. She had an autoimmune disease, so she felt horrible very quickly. She wouldn't eat and got blistering and bleeding sores by The time they could see her. Now they are saying also that it will take 48 hours to get a vet to write a prescription and you have to come in and pick it up. First off this place is not that busy and are we going back to the Stone Age handwriting scripts and taking them to the pharmacy. This place is a joke. They don't care about your animals just you wallet. Also Reese the assistant is super rude and should find a profession that doesn't deal with people.

I have taken my pets to Nonantum since it opened in the 80s. The founding owner was a hands-on vet…read morewho was personable, gave great care, yet still maintained the small-town vet vibe. Unfortunately, after her passing the business was taken over by a managing chain. It has now become just another big vet chain business with more automation but less customer service when it's most needed - making initial contact with the company to schedule an appointment. It's nearly impossible to call to schedule an appointment and speak with a live person. When calling, you get the option of leaving a message for a callback or holding on the line. the problem is that no one ever picks up. I've tried calling four times since December and each time I have yet to have a live person pick up my call from being on hold. I'm beginning to think it's time to downsize to a smaller practice where I can actually get a hold of someone when needed. Playing phone tag or email tag is no longer cutting it.

Both of them could often look at your dog and see what was wrong without expensive tests. Whenever possible they taught us how to care for our dogs at home rather then sending them to an emergency facility overnight. In September we found that our last dog had cancer. We chose palliative care for Hobbit and Dr. Woodcock helped us enjoy him for 4 more months. I never regretted driving from Wilmington all those years and if a foster appears I will be making that drive again. Special thanks to Kenny Roberts for keeping Debby's dream alive and going bigger. Great staff and much love was their winning recipe and it continues today.

I was so upset when my kitty got sick rushed her to the closest vet (bad mistake) disnt get any answers the vets response was "well she was an outside/stray cat". So I took her to North east even though I live in Wilmington de and it was well worth the trip in under an hour they not only tested her, gave her meds and iv fluids but also were able to tell me exactly what was wrong. It was a parasite that needed immediate attention. In addition the staff and doctor were so thorough with my baby, ended up goin over her appt time but they never rushed once. Also gave a low and high quote before doin any tests which was awesome But man what a difference from 1 vet office to another, no matter where I am I will never go to another vet office besides North east animal hospital.- brittany and dustin

I brought my 18-year-old cat to North East Animal Hospital in February 2025 because she was acting…read moreoff -- she was throwing up a couple times a day (about 3 days a week) and was getting very skinny. These are classic signs of a thyroid problem. They ran x-rays and senior bloodwork, and I spent hundreds of dollars that day. The vet told me she was "amazingly healthy for her age" and even said her thyroid levels were "remarkably healthy." Instead of addressing the real issue, they had no problem selling me a case of "special" canned food that cost $60 for 12 cans. They also never bothered to check her blood pressure, even though she was 18 years old. When I finally took her to a new vet in August 2025, not only did they confirm that NE Animal Hospital had completely misread her labs (which showed hyperthyroidism), but they also discovered her blood pressure was insanely high. Because of these oversights, my poor senior cat went untreated for six months. In that time, her condition progressed into a bad heart, she suffered mini strokes, and her retinas detached--leaving her blind. What was dismissed as "healthy" by NE Animal Hospital has now left my cat with a grim prognosis and permanent suffering. I trusted them with my baby, and they failed her in the most devastating way. Please, think twice before bringing your pet here. A mistake like this can cost your pet their quality of life. The following photos are of my baby with dialated pupils due to the retina detachment and her in an active mini stroke. I needed the video for the vet and it is a screenshot. Do not let this happen to your baby.
