What I believe is most important in a guide, over just catching fish, is Darrin is SAFE and responsible. I trust him to guide on trips across any body of water with the most valuable person in the world to me; my son. That cant be said for all guides. With all of that said...Darrin is suburb at fishing all types of fish species across all types of water. He is patient with new anglers as well as kids. Starting as a new fisherman myself Darrin taught me the skills of Fly Fishing that I have developed over the many years of fishing with him. On top of that Darrin taught my son when he began fly fishing at the age of 12. We have caught more Steelhead, native trout, strippers and bass than I can count. I would highly recommend Darrin for any California, Oregon, Idaho fishing trips. I would not hesitate to contact him for any other trips or states you plan to fish solo or with your family. Darrin I'm happy to be used as a reference for any of your clients. Feel free to have them call me direct.

Redwoods and Rivers - Evenings spent chatting around the campfire

Redwoods and Rivers

My daughter and I had a wonderful experience at Redwoods and Rivers. We arrived the evening of…read moreJune 6 and stayed in one of the tent cabins on the property. The owner, Michael, offered us a tour when we arrived. There was much to see...from the wonderful outdoor kitchen/classroom area, aviary, treehouse with swinging bridge, large vegetable garden, greenhouse made from repurposed materials, composting outhouse, etc...it was all very interesting! The large bed in our tent cabin was very comfortable and we loved the personal touches...cozy flannel sheets, soft cotton quilt, comfortable pillows, and even a candle burning on the nightstand upon our arrival. I wished I was staying for more than one night! The next morning we went out on the Trinity River for our rafting trip with our guide Ray. We did the Pigeon Point - Class III half-day trip. I have only rafted twice before and was a little nervous about falling out of the raft at the Hell Hole rapid, which I had read about. I told Ray that my goal was to stay IN the raft and he made it happen! The trip was thrilling, yet I felt safe, and Ray showed us a great time. We got some great (and laughable!) photos of us going through Hell Hole, taken from the river bank by Serendipity Snapshots. Great mementos of a really fun trip! If you go: Take mosquito repellant and watch out for poison oak. (We thought we got in it, but, fortunately, we did not break out.) Also, food is not available, so take your own. We were prepared with a French press for coffee, yogurt, and fruit for our breakfast. I hope that I can return to that part of California again and do a longer, possibly overnight trip, with Redwoods and Rivers. Thanks for the fun experience!

Their site and cabins are comfortable, clean, and cozy. It's such a treat to have delicious breakfasts and dinners al fresco, under a canopy of tall trees. There are a variety of options for ingredients for your sandwiches on the river and delicious, homemade salsa. Michael and Wanda are great hosts making sure you have everything you need. The rafting equipment is well maintained. Our evenings were topped off sitting around a campfire. Anyone would be fortunate to spend time a couple of days with Redwoods and Rivers.

My grandson and I had previously fished for Steelhead on the Smith River, but had come up empty handed and disillusioned. Todd river fishes 200 days a year, so he has extensive and current information. He used his hand-painted lures to tease every possible fish out of our run, while ensuring a wallop of a bite when they hit. We ended up catching (and releasing) 8 nice fish up to 8 pounds - an excellent and exciting day. The fish were leaping out of the water at the hit. Todd was calm and informative, with tips and stories with each passing hot spot. We can't wait to come back for another Steelhead run or perhaps during the summer salmon run.

Todd was so awesome. I had never caught a fish before and he was so patient and helpful. He's a great teacher to such a rookie and it was worth every penny. The river and views were gorgeous as well. We caught 3 salmon the first day and 8 the second day which is the limit. It was awesome!! I have already booked another day in October with my son and am looking forward to catching more fish. We stayed at the Indian River Lodge (see my Yelp review) and Todd picked us up in the morning there. He provided everything except for our lunch and drinks.

I brought my 8-year-old son Brandon along for his first real fly fishing adventure, and Jack made it a day we'll both remember forever. From the moment we hit the water, Jack was patient, knowledgeable, and great with my son. The float down the river was absolutely stunning, and the fishing action was steady throughout the day. Jack knew exactly where to go, and we hooked into some beautiful rainbows... 12 strikes and 9 landed, some north of 18 inches. Jack grilled up a hot ribeye steak lunch riverside--seriously next level. It felt more like a gourmet adventure than a fishing trip at times. Spotting wildlife along the river including deer and a bald eagle as we tackled the mild rapids was awesome! I've fished this river from the banks for years, but the float trip really gets you to locations that you can't otherwise access. If you're looking for an experienced, fun, and family-friendly guide on the Upper Sac, Jack Trout is your guy. We'll be back for sure.
