Naagan is fine dining at its finest - elevation of indigenous cuisine, keeping its ingredients and…read moreflavours; but with modern techniques. The restaurant is small - seats about 14 people, and it's tasting menu only. We have tried to get a table previously but they do book out quickly; so we took the Valentine's long weekend as an opportune time to try Naagan out. Chef Zach Keeshig takes a very hands on approach, explaining various ingredients at the beginning and during the meal - expanding on the background, how and where they were harvested/foraged/hunted, and preparation. All tables were served the course, and it was followed by a short description by the chef. Naagan doesn't serve any alcohol, but there is a non alcoholic drinks pairing which can also be ordered on a sharing basis. The plating and presentation for each course was artwork in itself - from the striking steer skull, to a turtle plate, to various wooden elements - each course was a beautiful presentation. The food itself had amazing variety - trout, venison, bison and the highlight of the evening, the best duck I have ever had. The desserts were equally impressive, with a variety of ingredients I have not had before. At the end of the meal, Chef Keeshig gives a short talk covering the history of the restaurant and its various aspects - the artwork, the decor, the furniture, the pottery etc. it's a great homage to the wider restaurant. Naagan is an experience worth traveling to Owen Sound for; and it's one of the best, if not the best fine dining experiences I have had.

It isn't related to the other "Landing" restaurants that are around Toronto. There is a patio that looks out onto the marina. It's very lovely but we were afraid of bugs so we stayed inside. We noticed that another group that was originally outside moved in after it got dark. You can catch the sunset here though, very scenic! Inside they have normal tables and ones with loungey leather chairs. You tend to sink into the latter so it makes it a little harder to eat unless you're sitting right at the edge of the table. These would be great if you're just having a drink. Service was good. The waitress checked in on us a few times and our waters were always topped off. The food was the part that fell a bit short. The maple pork medallions were the best thing at the table. I ordered a pound of wings which is supposed to be an appetizer but was quite filling for me. Interestingly enough, I had wings earlier that day and this 1 pound of wings had more wings than the other place, so at least you got a lot more in quantity. In terms of quality, I had a garlic parmesean sauce. The bottom of the dish was almost all oil - I have to assume that this is from the parm oil. It almost looked like butter but didn't taste like it. The wings were pretty dry inside and out. I also found a tiny tiny fly mixed in with the cheese. Not sure if it was from the patio door being opened so frequently. My friend was also disappointed in the chicken pasta. It was pretty bland and she had to salt it a lot to no avail. We wanted to try the dessert to see if the meal could be salvaged. We ordered the caramel chocolate cake. This cake had a hint of soap taste to me. My friends liked it though. If you want something a little different than a chain restaurant, this wasn't bad. It wasn't as nice as other hotel restaurants but it was fine for a utility meal.
