Nowadays, the not-so-secret "Secret Lunch" lineup of gourmet sandwiches is among the best in Los Angeles. The tiny Santa Monica shop shares the block with a Sherwin-Williams and a boxing gym. Cross your fingers for metered street parking on the trafficky block of Pico. Outside, red metal patio furniture is shaded by the overhanging storefront. Natural light runs through multicolored windows to the shop within. The mosaic tiled floor is effortlessly chic. The soaring whitewashed walls are minimally decorated, while shelves and refrigerators are carefully curated with wines, cheeses, tinned fish, and candles. The tablet register is set up on a worn kitchen countertop. Soft, instrumental music immediately feels welcoming. I've visited multiple times for early weekend lunch, and our Toast pre-order was ready upon arrival. We grabbed a table outside, and numerous takeout customers popped in and out during our meal. My favorite was the Disco Only. This elevated turkey club featured an impressive depth of flavor, from the sharp alpine cheese to the rich garlic mayo to the tangy pepperoncini vinegar. The thick-cut Bub and Grandma's sesame bread held up admirably well, and the arugula added a welcome fresh factor. The proteins were plentiful but were outshone by the other components. I also loved the Hot Girl Salami. The sweet-and-hot mustard and crispy baguette accentuated the rich, almost buttery salami. Meanwhile, the Venice Cowgirl was like a cheeseboard on a baguette. The sweet peaches and apricot-habanero jam dominated the subtly rich cheese or thin prosciutto, but the sandwich nonetheless proved to be a unique, summery option worth sharing. Lastly, the Yes, Honey elevated the ham-and-cheese with tangy relish, but the other components felt standard and forgettable. The service was friendly and efficient, and sandwiches ran for $15-20 each. Overall, the food tasted like the Santa Monica Farmer's Market on a premium roll, with sandos ranging from good to excellent. They are worth a dedicated visit if you're in the neighborhood, and I can't wait to work my way through more of Lady & Larder's menu.

They're chatty if you are in the mood, and will happily share their story. The parking lot they're next to is a free-for-all, and there are usually a bunch of other food stands set up. There is no seating, you just grab and go. A lot of people eat standing by their cars. I've brought a lot of other people here, and so far everyone agrees they are the best in the city!

I made reservations for 12:30pm on a Saturday through Open Table. At 12:16, I received a text that our table was ready and a request to respond if I was on my way. The street was under a bit of construction, so we opted to do valet which was $15 for two hours. When I arrived, I let the hostess know I was there for the Yelp event, and she asked me if I was planning to order food as well. I said yes, and she said okay because otherwise she'd have us sit in the bar. It was really nice to see that bar option for just the Community Experience. We were immediately seated and Patrick came to greet us and noted that we were there for the Yelp event. He told us we could choose the sangria so we opted for his two recommendations, Telefèric Sangria and Barceloneta Sangria. I was very surprised to see how large these glasses were, and I enjoyed the Telefèric Sangria the most. Something about the smell of the cinnamon every time I took a drink was so relaxing. Next, we placed an order for Crab Croquetas, Prime Wellington, and the October special Paella de Carne. Patrick also reminded us that our Yelp event came with the Patatas Bravas. The two appetizers came out within 5 minutes. We were shocked how quickly they came out, but they were perfect. They were freshly fried and crispy. I was intimated by the photos of the Patatas Bravas I saw online, because it looked like it would be heavy and spicy, but they weren't at all. The potatoes were a good size (a two biter for me), and maintained a crisp although it has sauce on top. The Crab Croquetas were really fun as well. It looked like crispy rice, but once you bite into it it was soft and the tuna on top complimented the crab croquetas for a nice balance. About 25 minutes later our Paella and Wellington arrived. My standout was the pork belly on the paella. It was so flavorful, and the texture had the right amount of firm and soft at the same time. The wellington was also delicious. The pastry on the outside was delicate and flakey, while the short ribs were tender. These two dishes ended up going well together because it was almost as if the wellington was our main, and then the paella was our side. We asked Patrick if he thought it was too much and he said it was a good amount. I'm glad he said that because it ended up being the perfect amount of food. In terms of service- Patrick was the star of the show, but occasionally Bruce would come check in on us. There was another man, wearing black, who would often come and clear our dirty plates and get us fresh ones. He'd also clear our dishes we had finished very quickly. All three of them were on top of it with the service. Overall, our bill ended up running us $126 after the Yelp items were comped, and tax was applied. This was well worth it for the quality of food, and service we received. It's a nice date spot that doesn't feel overcrowded, and doesn't feel too casual or too fancy. I'd definitely go back.

The produce here is always very nice and fresh, though the prices will reflect that quality, too. If you come late at night, there are also some discounted bentos and bites. I had one of their fruit tarts, and it was fairly watery and mushy on the bottom, so I unfortunately can't recommend that one. Outside of groceries, it's also a good local market for common Japanese products (eg shampoo, cosmetics, kitchenware). It definitely sports those narrow aisles, though, so be prepared to maneuver around both for parking and for shopping... but hey, that's part of the experience!

This was the best steak I have ever made at home, and rivals steaks that I have had at pretty good restaurants. All the meat is frozen and separated by farm of origin. All the steaks are wagyu from Austrialian cattle, some grass fed, some barley and grain fed. The cashier was a young guy, but he could tell me all which cattle were fed what, what produced a fattier steak than another one. He recommended I think the Atelier steak, grass fed, $32.99 for a ribeye, because it was tasty but not as fatty as the grain fed ones, which was what I was looking for. His recommendation was to thaw for one day in fridge, pat dry, then season with salt and pepper in fridge for another day. I did that, patted it dry, and salted one more time, then did a reverse sear on the steak. I baked it at low temperature (250 degrees F) until the steak reached an internal temp of 120 degrees F. Then seared 1 min on each side in a hot cast iron pan and little less than 1 min on the edges. Let rest for 10 mins then sliced. Damn, I could tell just by slicing it how soft and tender it was. And when I took that first bite, wow. The best steak I have ever made at home. Served with homemade sourdough bread and a salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. An excellent meal. One that you savor. And one that you can share. My wife and I actually shared one steak and it was so tasty, so satisfying, that we were full on 2/3 of the steak. Summary: if you want an excellent steak, one that tastes amazing with just salt and pepper and good technique, go to Herd and Grace. It is pricey, and not something I can get every week, but I will be coming back.

I got a custom vanilla cake with earl grey buttercream and blackberry jam from Jungle Bakes. The cake was just as beautiful as it was scrumptious. I personally wish I could order a bottle of that blackberry jam. Perfection! I also got an order or two of the macrons with a similar flavor profile. They were nothing short of amazing. I was so impressed with the cake and macrons, that I made sure to order a cake for my sister's birthday. The cake was gorgeous and full of thoughtful details I never would have thought to ask for, including a Phantom mask standing upright on top that stole the show. You could tell she put real care and imagination into every element! Pickup was effortless. Maryn came outside in her chef's cap and delivered the cake right to our window, and my daughter proudly drove home with it in her lap. It was such a sweet, personal touch. Finally, after a couple of times going back-and-forth and I gave her a time frame, she told me she can't do it because they don't do pictures why waste my time by asking me a time when you knew you could not do it because from the get-go I was very clear about what I wanted chocolate covered oreos with the pitcher on top, and I asked specifically if you could remove The in training in the picture and put that on the oreo, and yet you kept asking for a date, but you knew you couldn't accommodate me?
