The products are so different there- definitely not what we are used to here in America. They had the mayonnaise in a tube! A tube! It was so shocking to see it like that. We also had milk but it didn't taste like milk it was so sour and it was thick- so when we tried pouring it- it was all lumpy and a yogurt consistency as it poured out. As far as the ham and cheese it was pretty good and the bread was a baguette which was tasty. The soda was really good and was in a strange shaped bottle- everything was so strange looking. The best thing about this grocery store was the pastries and donuts- they were like 50 cents each and they were bakery fresh items that tasted like they were made on site. I don't know how the store looked but only know about the products and the taste of them due to my sister and her bf going to the store to get the food- but from what they were saying- they said the store was huge! And they had a bunch of sales. They said they paid $23.00 and brought back about 6 bags of food to the hotel. If we were to have 6 bags of groceries here- I'm sure it would've been more than $23. I heard Lidl is coming to Philly soon- which is great news- so I'm hoping they have the same great prices and the same donuts and pastries for cheap that taste so yummy.

If you can imagine a Nordic version of American Trader Joe's or Sprouts Market. Cool, eh? Local cheeses, organic fruits and drinks, cheeses, fresh breads and Dutch baked goods. Did I mention cheeses? Lol like a load of cheesy stuff! Deli meats, local beir and alcohol. I think you get the gist of it. And yes, greeting cards, toothpaste, etc., etc., etc. On my visit I stumbled across this Albert Heijn located just across the tiny wooden Dutch bridge of my hotel in Zaandam. I picked up Appeltaart Punten Uit De Bakkery for only €2.50 euro, Pecan Karamel Vanille Ice Cream from Hertog Yysalon only €1.50 euro, and a organic berry drink for only €1 euro! Just look at the pics if you don't speak Dutch lol! TIP: They don't take Visa or Mastercard! So make sure you have a small amount of Euros on you! In the end, I highly recommend Albert Heijn in Holland! Great options for traveling families or someone like me just looking for a late night snack:P I ended up going to this location in Zaandam twice and to another location at the Amsterdam Schiphol. It's located before security, meaning you don't need a boarding pass to enter here, and it can be particularly useful if you're looking to grab a drink or snack after departing your flight before commencing your way into the city. I was unable to find one of the items that I came into the store from, they only had the small kid's sized cartons of milk compared to the larger size, which was frustrating. Prices did seem a little higher than other Albert Heijn locations in the city, probably down to it being an Airport location. The self-service checkouts were easy to use and had an English option, I didn't notice a staffed checkout or any staff members around the store. 3* - The store is fairly modern, the selection is OK, and is useful if you want to grab a quick drink after your flight, if you are able to wait until you get into the city you'll probably find a better selection with lower prices at another Albert Heijn or similar store.

I've always had friendly service here too, plus they take credit cards, which still seems rare in The Netherlands. (They do charge a small fee I think though, for a credit card, like a quarter? Debit/pin cards are free) This store is huuuge too, with a liquor store and drug store on the first floor. This is definitely the biggest Dirk I've seen. It gets pretty busy here, so be prepared for an occasional restocking cart in the aisles and a lot of other shopping carts, but that's probably because it's way cheaper than the nearby Albert Heijn.

I returned a few minutes later and turned to the worker. She had the card but I was told I was leaving without paying (?!). I paid again (!). It was only when I returned from the Netherlands that I noticed that I had to pay twice for one purchase. More: it's no answer for my letter from Jumbo (!).

Having been to other numerous locations all over Holland I believe it. I especially like the prepared food section in the front, when you enter. There is a big selection of items. They usually have a few items on special and are clearly marked. My favorite item to buy was a pasta carbonara. Ate that almost everyday. Also, they do take credit cards. My favorite market chain in Holland for sure. Recommended.
