The service that was requested was to add 1 button and hole to my jacket. Just to let folks know, starting price for me was going to be $75. Because he mentioned that I looked mentally retarded. Customer service, pricing, and his rude comments are determined more so by the class you are in, than race. For those that have not experienced his off the wall comments yet. They do a great job tailoring my scrubs and pants. They can even hem joggers which is neat because not many can work with the cuff at the bottom. However, the owner is rather chatty and very opinionated which is a drag. You can end up in a very long conversation with him about politics or personal views on current events. I'm a bit surprised by these reviews. With the exception of his being chatty (ok with me) and irregular hours, my experience with this tailor has been quite different. I have an adult special needs son. Over many years, he has gone to Julian's whenever he loses, knots or breaks the string in his sweat pants. This repair has always been done for him on the spot and free of charge. Yesterday, my son and I stopped by to have a pair of pants hemmed. A last minute rush job as my son has a Valentine dinner dance for adults with special needs to attend tomorrow. Julian not only agreed to this small, rush job, but said he would finish within the hour! We returned in 40 minutes and the pants were ready. He also patiently showed us how to affix my son's bow tie, as my son had never worn one. Upon being presented with my credit card, he said job was cash only. I offered to go to nearby ATM for cash, but he waved it off, told my son to go have a good time at the dance and return with the 20 bucks when we had the chance. We are black. As opposed to racism and condescension cited by others, he was only kind, helpful, professional and complimentary (expressing how impressed he was by my son's being such a "nice, polite" kid, one he admired and liked very much". His attention, kindness and patience, along with an exemplary job done is highly appreciated. We will continue our patronage when possible, as he does have limited hours. read more

Came in back is high school with a football jersey to get tailored and he completely blew me off. My guess would be because I was a young broke kid who didn't have a lot of money. I went all over town looking for quick results and no one could give them to me , a cleaners referred me to Julian's said he offers quick work. When I arrived I found out he doesn't do curtains he is a tailor.... I was so disappointed BUT he said what do you need done? . I told him I needed my curtain length to be 56inches instead of 63 inches. He said he would do it for me and have it done by 6:30 "The same day" and it was already 4:45.....yah!!!! Everyone else wanted next day and a week for $12 cheaper. I paid the $72 that he was asking and when I came to pick them up because I was so happy I paid $75 instead cause he even ironed them for me!! I don't mind paying more for QUALITY WORK!! after getting it home it looked like they were just the way they came I almost thought did he even hem them. Herman, the owner, is condescending, racist, and elitist. I feel bad for his employees. For a while I would try to go when he was not there but it got to be too much of a gamble. I don't think he understands how condescending he is to his own customers. Talks bad about Mexicans even though he is one. The kind that doesn't care if he's being insulting and disrespectful, keeps laughing even though no one else found his insults funny. He's also messed up a couple of my jeans. Every time I drive by that place it makes me sick to my stomach. My wife went to get her wedding dress hemmed and when he messed up the dress she went back and he told her that they don't do women's clothing-even though it says on his own window that they do! Lee's Alterations is the original Taylor in Salinas and she is much better and a much better person. Stay away from this place if you don't want a terrible experience. read more

Julian is a professional. He does his work with pride and goes out of his way to improve your piece of clothing beyond the alterations you request. His level of craftsmanship is known and his prices reflect that. He is a bit chatty and can come off strong at times. His shop is very organized and clean, which is not the norm for other tailor shops in the area. I would recommend his work. read more

I've been going to Julian's for years. The owner does excellent work but I finally got tired of his condescending comments. He constantly puts down other local tailor shops. He's made fun of other clients of his as well. It got to the point where I felt very uncomfortable going to him. I began going to him less and less for the above reasons. Small jobs, I would get done elsewhere. For suit alterations, I still went to him up until last week. I had him lengthen the sleeves on a new suit jacket. When I went to pick up my jacket, I was surprised to see a cost of $182 written down for the work he did. He then tells me, "for you my friend, just give me $120". Three months prior, he had charged me $74 for the same work, which I thought was still too much but I paid it with no hesitation. This time, I asked for a clarification on the price hike and he could not articulate. He then pointed at his prices that were posted over by his fitting room and showed me that lengthening sleeves costed $47. Well, he just began digging himself in a hole as he unknowingly threw himself under the bus. I then ask him "how much do you charge by the hour" and his response was "I charge $40/hour". I followed by asking, "how much time did it take you to complete the work on my jacket" his response was "2 hours". So, based on his 'hourly charge', I should have paid $80, yet, his price posted on the wall for the work he did was $47. How did we come to the $182 cost that he wrote on the invoice? I've spoken to people that have encountered similar situations and the common denominator is that he feels people out and if he feels that they will continue to come back, regardless of the cost, he will continue to hike up the prices. This is an opportunistic man with a lot of arrogance and no sense of respect for his clients. I have dealt with this guy for a long time and I am happy to say that he will never see another penny from me. There are plenty of businesses out there who work with integrity and respect, who still do excellent work. It is those people who we should give our business to. One last thing, he is Mexican and it is extremely disturbing to hear him talk so badly about his own race. He has opened up many times on so much negativity about the Mexican race. It is offensive, and definitely not ideal for a business owner to be communicating to his clientele. This man is something else, and has absolutely no self awareness! I have to say, I took a piece of clothing in there to be sewn that had boning in it, the tailor looked at me and said he wouldn't sew it. It was just a few stitches next to the boning. So I said okay, I'll take it home and try it on my machine, to which he promptly removed it from my hands and quickly sewed it up. I have to thank him for his kindness and ability. He really saved me from making a mess of that beautiful brocade. Herman saved my garment and is a wonderul tailor. read more

"Julian" is a master craftsman and an artist with clothing. If you want the highest level of craftsmanship, be it a hem job or a bespoke 3 piece suit, this is the place to go. It's true, his prices are higher than most, but you have to keep in mind the shop is a tailor shop, not an alterations shop. Julian doesn't just change clothing - he creates it from scratch. That is primarily why he can "fix" anything. His level of skill FAR surpasses that of any alteration shop. read more

Julian is not a rasist, I am in fact a white woman. I was treated with much respect when visiting his shop with my fiance, who was having a suit altered for his sisters wedding. He is going there now to get his suit fitted for our wedding as well as the rest of our wedding party. He does beautiful work and the cost is well worth what you pay for the quality. Less than one star!! I gave the owner a vintage 1960's suede fringed jacket to repair. We talked in detail about the pocket, which lost some stitching along one side. I asked him to match the thread and stitch size, and to tuck the lining in so it wouldn't show. He had a lot of attitude while talking to me, and this made me apprehensive to leave it with him. But I did. Big mistake! He CUT a triangular shape off the edge of the pocket, which left the ORIGINAL STITCHING MARKS VISIBLE in the suede! And the lining was still peaking out of the edge. I demanded my money back! When I left with the jacket, a man on the sidewalk who saw me leave, walked me to my car, telling me that Julian ruined a jacket of his, and a woman later on told me he ruined her son's jacket! If only I had known, I NEVER would have taken my 50 year old, handmade awesome jacket to this charlatan! read more

This dude will flat out fix do what you need. You will pay for it, but I doubt you could find someone better. Granted I had jeans hemmed and fixed so I can't vouch for his ability with materials other than denim (but I would expect it to be just as good). I had a rip in pair of jeans that I didn't want to give up on, and it makes me crazy to think about pairs I've thrown away that he could have easily fixed. Regarding race: I don't think he's racist. I just don't think he's super comfortable with people outside his friends. If you need something important tailored or expensive tailored and don't want to risk it getting effed up, go to this guy. I took a pair of pants to be hemmed last weekend. They were done within an hour (I was honestly expecting days) and the work was beautiful. The stitching was nicer than the original hem! I admit I was impressed. This was my first time going (my mother recommended them- she had several of my father's work pants altered years ago there). The customer service seemed great. I didn't shop around so I don't know if it was a reasonable price ($20)- but it's close to my home and they did awesome work and did it quickly. I will definitely go back. read more

My most recent visit involved a pair of pants I absolutely *love.* They were ripped and I was certain they were done for. They are as good as new. I don't even want to start this with a one star! It doesn't deserve a one star at all! When I entered with my brother to ask for prices he was VERY rude! He ignored me the whole time and was talking to my 17 YEAR OLD brother about smoking weed on Sunday! (On which my little brother told him he passed by to see if it was open). After a while I introduced myself and he stared at me with disgust and said who am I , I told him I was my little brothers sister and he came out laughing saying if they feed me more than my brother (since his very fit). He basically called me fat. He kept pushing it by saying if I get all the food 1st before my brother ate. And than added that my brother should of acted like I was his wife! That's stupid disgusting. I though that was very disrespectful of him. I do not tolerate this kind of service! As a business owner myself, I have a lot of Respect for my customers and I want to make them feel welcome! Avoid this place at all costs!!! I went to this tailor to get my coat altered. This guy who later identified himself as Julian (who is hispanic) was there. He was not friendly at all. I asked him about alterations for my coat and how much it would cost. He told me the price but said I should check elsewhere. Another customer, who was hispanic, then walked in the store, and before I could ask another question, he just ignored me and greeted that customer in a very friendly tone of voice, different from how he greeted me. I am not hispanic. This Julian, is a total racist!!!! How sad! I told him that it was wrong the way he treated me differently than his hispanic customer. He just said "yes, have a nice day." Very disappointing!!! I am new to the area. I found Julian's online. I called 3 times. The phone simply stopped ringing after 3 rings (no voicemail, no "hello")... just a cessation of the ringing. I arrived at approximately 5:15 p.m.. I was told to come back in 30-40 minuets when the person who could help me would return from lunch. I returned in 50 minuets at 6:05 to find they were closed. The sign on the door clearly says hours of operation are 11-7. Don't go there. I can't imagine going to pick up my clothes, needing them and not being able to get them. Very unprofessional. I recently took a pair of my scrub pants to get hemmed. Julian does an okay job. I was a bit disappointed that he charged me 14$ for the hem. When the scrubs alone cost me 12$. One thing that bothered me was that he said Salinas was nice but, the thing that makes Salinas ugly are the Mexican's. Well.. I am mexican and I was in total shock when he said this. So I just blew it off and took my pants. Yesterday my sister went to get my nephews undergarment sewed and he wanted to charge her 28$ when it cost her 20$ to purchase it. he also stated he had to fix so many things like the sleeve's, neck line and etc.. my sister told him that she had just purchased the garment and pulled it out of the box and took to him. (it has never been worn) When my sister looked at the bottom of the hem it looked exactly like the sleeve (original hem), so she told him that he was over charging her and that he couldn't have fixed what he said because it was the original hem. He response was that he only overcharges "Mexican". Which proves my theory he is racist's and I will no longer take any of my clothing to him. read more

We have finally found a great tailor! I have only been here once, and he tailored a dress so we'll see what happens after a pair of pants, but so far I am very impressed. We took a dress to be shortened and taken in a few inches. I'm not sure if "Julian" was the guy that helped us...he was the short and sassy one... The dress looked soo cute, the stitching was impeccable and the fit was perfect. He even took the time to press it; I love that attention to detail. I think this guy could probably take apart a dress, make a new one from it and it would look better. Did I mention he did this in about an hour? We waited 'till the last minute, and he called us out on it too. We dropped off the item, went to eat, then picked it up. While the service is quick and excellent, you do pay for it. This shop is by no means cheap, but at least you will only need to get an item tailored once and be done with it. I think the price is worth it. read more

Herman the owner can be a little direct and vocal about his thoughts but he runs a pretty good business. I don't really have issues with his quality of work as he has been my go too tailor for the last 20 years but I have had some items that needed to be corrected which he had no issues doing. I trust him with all my hems and reattachment and suit alters. He is a bit pricy but you get what you pay for. I recommend Herman, (the owner who named his shop after his son Julian) for any of your alters or hems or re attachments. His work is clean and quick. read more

my excellent wife and i take our repairs to julian's, because herman is a master mechanic on clothes and he is quite charismatic. the work is perfect, the quality is better than new, we know how much it will cost (and why), and our " threads" are returned on time. recently, a bike glove came apart at the seams. herman had it fixed for me while i waited a short time. the repaired stitching will out last the rest of the glove. i love the rock star treatment. read more

Wow, what a jerk! Regardless of skill, this business does not know the meaning of customer service. I took a couple of suits to get a quote on how much it would cost to do some alterations and he goes off on this prissy attitude of how he does not deal with cost and I should go elsewhere. I have been getting my clothes altered from julian since i was in middle school. he does amazing work and has the prices to fit it. but its worth it. he does his work in a very short time the majority of the time it takes less than a week. depending on how swamped he is. all in all my whole family goes to julian. he does great work. read more

I love Herman. He has performed miracles on some of the things I brought in. He has made two suits for my husband, and he loves them. I love that I can just bring in things for my husband and with his measurements on file, he can alter his pants or shirt sleeves or anything that is needed.
