Being able to text and call Jules during labor was a game changer. Please consider another doula. A year ago, I sat in your spot....browsing the internet trying to find a doula to help have a beautiful birth experience. I came by Jules and all I saw were good things, likely because she works hard to delete all unfavorable reviews including mine. I wish I knew these things before hiring her. If you meet Jules in person, I'm sure you'll like her. She's likable, no doubt. But in my experience not trustworthy, especially with such an important role. Last year, I contracted with Julie Sullivan-Fields for her doula services. I wanted a difference birth experience the second time around. I had some questions about what to expect from a doula. One of my concerns was what would be done in the event that myself and another mother/client went into labor at the same time. Months before delivery, I asked Julie about this scenario. I was assured I need not worry---that she would immediately call a backup doula and cover all cost associated. I had a planned induction at 41 weeks. I went to the hospital that morning as planned. Julie knew two days in advance I would be in labor that day and needed her doula support. As luck has it, another mom went into labor shortly after I was admitted to the hospital. Instead of letting me labor in peace, she concerned me with the struggles of the other mothers troubling labor and delivery throughout the day, leading me to believe she would be with me soon. Yet, I didn't even see her face (she was in the same hospital all day) until it was time to for me to deliver. I went my entire labor (8+ hours) without the doula support I paid for. I also felt I was put in a very uncomfortable position. I was doing my best not to panic and worry about her absence during labor, which was not something I imagined I was going to have to give a second thought. When things got really bad for me pain-wise, and I was absolutely unable to manage on my own, my husband requested her support and the only support she offered was via text, suggesting he help me on my side. "Mom's like that," she said. When I brought her absence to her attention, she responded in confusion. She said I was "laboring fine" and that is why she wasn't there. I am still in shock at the lack of concern and professionalism. I wish I could do it again. But I can't. I only hope this review helps other mothers make an informed decision. I wouldn't recommend Jules to support you on one of the most precious days of your life. Things happen, I get it. But not only did she no-show me on the birthday of my son, she has yet to even acknowledge that her absence wasn't okay, or the emotional aftermath that left me with. If you are okay with paying a large sum of money for her to possibly show up to your birth, completely shut you down if she doesn't and then send others to personally attack you on online forums after sharing your experience, then maybe Jules is the one for you. From the bottom of my heart, this momma is over here just trying to find peace in this crazy world and wishing nothing but great things for everyone, including Jules herself. Oh where to begin? We chose to go with a Doula because my husband had a very traumatic experience dealing with a hospital and I didn't want the hospital setting during the birth to be so hard on him. I wanted him to feel that if he needed to step away that he felt I was taken care of and could feel free to do so. Also, how bad ass would it be to say I did it without epidural?! ;) We started with Julie when I was 35 weeks pregnant and although I wish I had called her sooner, I really think I was just ella prepared. From day one Julie made us feel like we were family. She was full of real genuine love and peace and you could just tell how much she cared for the work she does. She provided us with a book about Hypnobirthing that we would go over together and other reading material for us to practice and fill in like affirmations and scripts to read to baby as parents. It was truly beautiful. She also provided us with links to meditations for relaxation that she recorded herself which I very much enjoyed due to her very soothing voice! We even did some relaxation sessions in person and over the phone to help me with any anxiety I had and I just felt so much better afterward. When the time came (6 days short of 40 weeks), I started getting surges/waves (contractions) and I never felt worried or scared. I maintained my breathing and my positive thinking. When Julie got to the hospital she set up our room with salt lamps, aroma therapy, and even some pretty Christmas lights to set a nice and tranquil environment... I LOVED IT!! All throughout the night and morning she would put me in positions to help my body "open up". At one point she put me in a position where my water finally broke and REALLY got things going! Along with my husband, she would remind me to breath when times did get rougher (because natural childbirth is no walk in the park!) A few days after delivery I received an email from her with my entire birth story! She did mention she would do this for us but the day of, I never even noticed she was documenting EVERYTHING! She even sent me pictures she had taken (with my ahead of time permission, of course!) All in all, I was extremely happy with everything about Julie and would recommend her again and again! Jules helped my amazing wife deliver our son. Jules was an excellent resource and friend. This was our first child and we had no idea what to do or how to navigate this step in our life. My wife found her and we met her and immediately knew she was going to be an asset during this process. We took her hypno-birthing class and had constant communication with her. She came over to the house and gave my wife massages and would talk with us about my wife's birthing plan. My wife would text her and ask her questions and she always got a reply and friendly, helpful advice. My wife had a birth plan. She was going to deliver at home with Jules and our midwife. When the time came Jules came over and the midwife came over. Jules was right there and we were working through the home birth, but we had to change plans. My wife had to go into the hospital because she wasn't progressing. Jules was right there to help us. We hadn't planned for hospital birth, but she helped us pack, get to the car, and check in at the hospital. My wife had a very long delivery. Jules was willing to help with anything as it was needed, she even left the hospital to buy popsicles, came back, and was with us all 40 hours. She was a comfort and advocate for my wife in a way I couldn't be. As if all of that was not enough, Jules went above and beyond, she went back to our house at night to stay with our dog. She realized, before we did, that we had not planned to leave him and he needed care also. It's an amazing thing when someone cares so much about other people that they decide to help with things that may not be part of the job description but are important as well.
