The signage is pure Farrow & Ball and there's wooden crates artfully displaying mountains of butternut squash, sweet potaties and oranges. Two steps inside however, and you realise the owners have created more of a post-modern corner store with everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, organic eggs, milk and cheese to homemade cakes, soups and palm-sized quiches. The majority of it looks lip-smackingly good and is priced reasonably with coffee, pastries and salads to take away for commuters. Handily, they also sell big bags of rice, pasta, pulses and herbs and lots of Ecover household and cleaning products. In a strange twist, they also stock a small variety of rental DVDs from the owner's previous business - so you can pick up a blockbuster or rom-com with your grains and groceries!

Grocer & Grains is great alternative to M&S is you are looking for some fresh produce. You can buy all of your dinner making needs here, and rent a movie all at the same time. You can also pick up something living, like a potted plant if your windowsill is feeling a little bit lonely. At 60p for a big batch of cinnamon sticks, I would say that Grocer & grain is the right value for right amount. It did seem a little bit cheaper than other markets in the area, which is great if you just spent £24 on a ticket to London!

Brighton's food industry is blessed with so many organic and local grocery stores and restaurants…read moreit would hard pressed to eat unhealthily here. Jasmines Health Food Store is a great shop to add to the list of healthy boutique grocers in the Seven Dials area. Carrying a wide array of fruits, veggies, dry goods and snacks, this is a local favorite for just popping in and getting whatever it is that you crave. With an impressive selection of organic, local and fair trade goodies, it makes it very hard to decide whether or not to get the rice cakes with quinoa or the free trade dried mangos from Uganda. If you're not into shopping at monster grocery stores, then Jasmine is a great alternative to endlessly searching out aisles for your favorite health food snack or skipping the fruit that has been shipped in from over seas. I much prefer to spend a little more money and have someone who actually knows their industry too. Its mainly all organic, seasonal produce and you can really tell the difference from the packaged stuff. The water melons are absolutely fantastic and so juicy as are the pineapples. Try and get there when the Jersey Royal potatoes are in season! They have an array of herbs and spices indoors too and occasionally stock some very in expensive saffron!

With a brilliant cheese counter and mouthwatering selection of artichoke hearts, stuffed peppers, anchovies and the like, this is the perfect place to pick up gourmet picnic items on your way to Preston Park. There are also endless jars of delicious sauces and pickles as well as specialist pastas and breads. If you can get there early enough in the morning they have fresh pastries- the croissants are really light and fluffy...mmmm, just thinking about Arkwrights makes me hungry! Unsurprisingly, its not cheap, but let me tell you, I have never been happier to splash out on delicious nibbles- this deli is a real treat!

Its much better quality, and much better value than you will find at a supermarket. The Chorizo Picante went down a treat on my pizza's last night. In fact, if you're ever planning on making your own pizzas everything you need is here, and it's all delectable. Another thing that nobody seems to have mentioned are the range of the home made foods they serve; baguette pizzas, samosas, pasta, curry, and everything I've ever bought from them has been top notch. On top of all this there is a huge selection of grains, pulses, herbs, spices, and cans of all sorts. Highly Recommended!

Typical wholefoods fare is available; organic and eco-friendly variants of standard supermarket items, from washing-up liquids to ready made pies, produced by the poetically named company 'Clive's Pies', which, it must be said, are hearty and delicious. Obviously, a range of dried fruits, nuts, pulses and seeds can be had, as well as soya and rice based dairy alternatives, tofu and and a vast array of juices and sauces. What makes Sunny Foods stand out in the wholefoods market is that, impressively for a relatively small shop with limited space, they have a strong emphasis on their grocery section. Heaps of locally farmed produce, all fresh and in good nick, and some rarities including Italian Cavolo Nero- a delicious dark cabbage which you can use in place of Kale- and various seasonal fruits altogether take up about a quarter of the shop's floor-space. Anyone looking to eat well, or expand their cooking repertoire would be well served to pay Sunny Foods a visit. However, the staff have never been particularly friendly or helpful, which isn't the worst thing in the world, but when you name your shop 'Sunny', you're really setting yourself up for criticism if your disposition doesn't match your projected image. Also, and, in fact, more importantly, the prices in here can feel almost overbearingly high. We have to make allowances for small local businesses, and understand that it's hard for them to compete with bulk-buying chains, but there are many items in Sunny Foods which you could find for less in Pulse, which is an even smaller establishment in the Open Market, so prepare yourself if you're a bit light of wallet.

I'm firstly surprised this store has been here in this location since 2007 when it was first reviewed, it has obviously been taken care of and refurbished since then which is a good sign. Interestingly, this is one of the few stores to not have one of the new signs "Waitrose and Partners" which all branches of Waitrose and John Lewis seem to be, rebranded as. They have multiple counters here for fish and sushi, meat, cheese and more. You could potentially get a great deal of your weekly shop here, it is larger than your typical Little Waitrose store, yet smaller than your average Waitrose supermarket but is still a decent size, with coffee machines and a small amount of outdoor seating to grab your loyalty scheme free beverage. The outdoor seating area, being on a busy road isn't the nicest of places to sit, especially considering this part of town is prone to the standard beggars and Big Issue sellers who seemed a little harassing. A decent branch, they seem to have a smaller product range of everything you'd normally find in a Waitrose, with the gluten-free selection being especially sub-par compared to other branches but still it's a decent store in a great location, making it pretty good to grab essentials or more while in Brighton centre. 3*

Hardly a hidden gem, though it's surprising how many people don't know there's a Waitrose here…read more It's a reasonably-sized version of the familiar supermarket on this busy shopping street, five minutes west from the main Churchill shopping centre. Helpful staff, though check-out queues can be long, and some of the aisles are a bit narrow. Good wine section. Helpfully, there are bus stops right outside to a wide range of destinations. Also opposite is the Taj Foods supermarket (see separate review), for all sorts of organic stuff, authentic Asian produce and exotic fruits, if you want a wider choice of these items. There's a life up to the car park area at the rear (on the first floor).

This is probably my most favourite place in Brighton. I love everything about Eat Naked! Can I give…read moreit a 6 stars please? The lady that owns the business and who is responsible for making all of the food is extremely talented, friendly and down to earth. The food is exceptional, I've eaten here several times and its always consistently good too. What I also love is that even though its raw/clean eating food which is supposed to be the latest trend at the moment, where most places are cashing in, Eat Naked keep their prices reasonable. Its not a fad for them they really do live and breath it as a lifestyle. Their ethos is healthy should be affordable and not boring! They change their menu daily which is to be admired and you can see the menu online on their instagram account. Their clean treats are what dreams are made of. I regularly crave and dream about their snickers bar when I'm in London and count down the days until I can come here again to get one when I'm in Brighton. ITS THAT GOOD! They also do juice cleanses that you can pick up or I believe they can post out too. I can't say one negative thing about this place, its quite small so maybe more of a takeaway place but they still have some seating inside if you want to chill and have a coffee. I've currently sprained my ankle and can't walk, but I just can't go a day without some Eat Naked goodness so I've managed to track down a courier to collect it and bring it to me in my flat. That's how much I love this place! All I need now is for them to clone the store and drop it in London please so that I can visit every day!
