First visit to a classic New York pizza joint. Got a slice of their margarita slice and another of their artichoke. Cheap, hot, delicious. Thin crust pizza is my new favorite kind of pizza. The crust itself was fluffy and hot, like little breadsticks. My boyfriend was still hungry so he got an order of their garlic knots, which were also sooo very good. On our way out, we saw someone stack one slice on top of another, made the infamous pizza fold, and went on to devour his masterpiece. Really shows the diversity of how people eat pizza. read more

this local and long time standing pizzeria is a staple in chelsea. the food is always fresh and hot and delicious. they have the best prices in town and the people who work here are super nice and friendly. their pizza is really good too but so is their homemade hero's and hot/cold dishes. This place is run by two very nice guys and it is probably the most popular pizza place in the neighborhood. People keep coming back so they must be doing something right. But I personally think the quality of the pizzas are poor or at best average. There is nothing unique or special about them, the ingredients are low grade white flower and old or canned veggies, and the ambiance is predictably dull. I came here with a friend to get a slice of pizza. I really wanted white pizza, so I got a slice of the white pizza with no toppings. It was just okay, nothing extraordinary. J's was no-frills, pizza-eating, cold-escaping perfection! I am a hugeeee pizza snob... and I enjoyed this place very much. The pizza was fresh. The owner works here and is extremely nice. The is ample seating ..except very tight.. but then again this is NYC, most people grab a slice and go on about their day. My sister enjoyed this place very much. I've been back about 30x since my last review. J's margarita pepperoni pie is simply the best. The dough - water, flour, oil and salt - you can taste the quality, is crisp and chewy. The ingredients are always fresh. They use just the right amount of cheese. Not stingy or overwhelming. The sauce has a nice tang to it without being sweet. It truly is a perfectly balanced pizza creation. The same people are there day in and day out. When I call for delivery one of the guys speaks rough, heavily accented English. I used to get a little frustrated, but now all I have to say is 'margarita pepperoni' and he recognizes me. Sometimes the owner will deliver himself. Really nice guys, great quality pizza. I understand now how they can afford a large corner lot surrounded by lots of fancy places. It's not because they are cheap or they own the building, they are just that good. read more

I've ordered several times for delivery. No complaints about speed of delivery (excellent!) but the pizza itself is only fair. Pies come only lukewarm, requiring reheating. I do ask for a well-done crispy crust, but this is never honored. I generally order the small pizza (just right for one hearty appetite), and I'm afraid the crust seems not freshly made. Nor is it crispy or hot. Perhaps these crusts are bought in bulk rather than freshly made? This is just an OK pizza. I ordered twice over the past month from J's. It was my first meal that I didn't make at home since the stay at home detective. I ordered 2 slices of pizza, grama slice and plain cheese. Eggplant parm which came with a generous portion of pasta and separate a small greek salad. All were very good. the parm was a really good deal. the pieces were very large, generous with the parm, and side pasta that was included was 2 meals. a few days later I ordered pizza for my doorman. all were delivered hot and on time. the food is good and very reasonable. read more

IMPORTANT READ IF YOU'RE OF ANY MINORITY OR AN IMMIGRANT Let me start off by saying this isn't the first time I've had an issue with J's; I'd previously seen the owner in a full on verbal argument with a homeless/ down on his luck guy and thought it strange and passed comment that he should cut the guy some slack to which he screamed at me "fuck off mother Theresa". Mental to say the least and it sat so uncomfortably with me i've never eaten here; that is until tonight. Myself and two friends came here approx 1:45am in search of some food. We sat to eat along with approx 8 other diners. About 10mins later the guy running the place screamed at us all to shut up laughing. We all laughed and joked amongst ourselves how bizarre however all patrons remained light hearted and fun. That quickly turned sour. As he continued to scream at all customers to keep it down we decided to call it a night. As we were walking out the door he said, verbatim "fuck off back to Australia or England or wherever it is you bitches came from". Having lived in America for 4yrs none of us had ever heard or faced such discrimination. We were genuinely shocked. I don't believe hate should be given any fuel so I won't go on however should anyone want to contact me for a full breakdown of what was said please do. A special thanks to the lady and her husband who walked out in solidarity. A lot more of that support is going to be needed from us all over the next 4yrs. Rest assured you both always have mine. One of my top pizza joints to go to in Manhattan. Been going there for years and will keep going. Friendly staff with great pizza. Their Pepperoni and Bacon slice is very fat and tasty (greasy but that seems normal for the types of meat) Their buffalo chicken slice is amazing and replaced the tomato sauce with actual buffalo sauce adding to the spiciness. The sicilians, especially the Fresh Mozzarella and Garlic one, are amazing. You can get a refill on fountain drinks any time with no charge so that's a plus. Hard to believe no one has yelped about this pizza parlor. New Yorkers love their pizza as evidenced by a pizza parlor on every other corner. Any New Yorker can attest that all pizza is not created equal. If I didn't believe before Js had made a believer out of me. I live two blocks away, so it's in my area. I love it. Truly, I do. It's your typical greasy pizza dive- you don't go for service, or decor, or any other stuff like that. You go for pizza. And they have it, in almost any kind you can imagine, at excellent prices. My favorite is the Baked Ziti pizza, which I know seems odd, but trust me when I say that it's a mini-religious experience in your mouth. The standard cheese pizza, the true test of a parlor's skill (easy to do, hard to do well), is also outstanding. Their calzones are absolutely wonderful, and the delivery service is prompt. My friend Daniel and I love ordering a whole pizza each and killing them as we watch DVDs. My girlfriend and I crave it at times when we're in school in Baltimore- indeed, when I was making the commute between NY and Baltimore last summer, I often brought her whole pizzas from Js. I can't speak for pizza joints in other people's areas, but this one has stolen my heart. I love you Js- if I were single and your pizza were given human form, I would get it pregnant and marry it. Don't expect chique, or cool- expect a pizza dive where the pizza is what matters (and is really all that matters) and I find it nigh-impossible to beleive that you will ever be disappointed. read more

When I see a grimy little pizza shop like this I just assume the pizza is going to be pretty good. J's is a perfect example of why one must not stereotype. The pizza here just isn't that good. Although J's had some really yummy toppings like eggplant and ricotta cheese, the pizza was way too doughy and, in my case, the toppings were not cooked properly (my eggplant had a weird raw taste - they should have roasted the eggplant a little before putting it on top of the pizza). Crappy pizza and it's not even that cheap. I've had much better pizzas at those dives in the East Village that are $2 for a slice and a coke. read more

I think the large pie with meatballs was like $15.50. After walking in, I immediately regretted ordering the pie because they had about 15 slices out on the counter. After eating the first slice, I immediately stopped regretting ordering the pie. Solid pizza. Only complaint : The pizza is doughy.
