Owsley's Lounge

Owsley's Lounge

Bar Even though the…read morename is something of a tongue twister, Owsley's Lounge is a welcome addition to the Jasper scene. Sitting right next to the Fairfield Inn on the Patoka river, it is a welcome addition for us weary travelers who want to have a cocktail and chat after a day of meetings. The nights we were there were interesting: they were trying out some new bartenders and the first night the lady was very nice, but just terrible. Sean (the main bartender) swooped in and saved the day, and was just a hoot to chat with. Second night, much better trainee and Sean was still large and in charge- this place has some serious potential and there is a new and almost open rooftop bar - imagine that for Jasper! Drinks were well made and there is food available - nothing to blow your mind, pretty much just bar food: pretzels, wings, nachos and some pulled pork. Looking forward to hitting it next time I am in that area Parking is somewhat limited with the hotel sharing the lot but definitely give it a shot if in the area

Great vibe, good service but don't "open a tab" - pay for each drink when you order it. After a few…read morehours with 3 friends and a larger table, I went up to pay the "tab" at the counter. They didn't know what I had ordered and hadn't tracked what I ordered. I listed the drinks we had consumed during the night- checked the tab reminded them of one I had listed and paid the tab- only to get in the car with my friends and find that one had paid also! Without a receipt from the earlier transactions, we didn't go back to argue. Pay as you go is annoying but smarter!

As you can see in the picture, they looked, and tasted like frozen fish fillets that you can get at any local grocery store. The inside more closely resembled fish mush than actual fish. Others' food tasted fine, but some came out barely warm, as was the case with my German potatoes. While the restaurant had a small town charm and friendly staff, I can't say that I will be back. The long wait wasn't worth the mediocre food.

We decided to go for dinner on Sunday evening and at first we were seated inside. It was a bit stuffy inside and so we asked Ian, our waiter, if we could sit outside and keep him as our server. He said yes and we sat in their clean and comfortable outdoor seating area. Unsure of what to order, I asked Ian for a recommendation. He said their pizza was really good and we could get a 16" unlimited topping pizza with breadsticks for $31. Let me tell you, his recommendation was absolutely incredible. The pizza came out hot fresh more toppings than you could ask for and the breadsticks were just as good! This pizza for sure is one of the top five best pizzas I have had at a restaurant. If you get the chance and are in French lick for any amount of time, make sure you go to Kelley's and order the pizza! My wife and I both highly recommend!

Café Piña - Wonderful grilled tuna on sourdough! Crispy French toast with berries

This is the best breakfast/brunch spot…read more Cafe Pina is definitely one of our favorite restaurants ever. The menu changes seasonally with new items, but still has classics you can expect all year round. They also have weekly specials that include non-menu items that are often themed for holidays/special occasions. This morning we got to enjoy some of this season's winter menu. I had the fuyu sando, my husband had the country cabin crunchwrap, and our son had the O-G pancakes with chocolate chips/strawberries/blueberries. I also had a cookie butter chai and my husband had coffee. Everything was phenomenal, like always. The staff is always pleasant and helpful. The restaurant itself is bright, open, and just cheerful. If you're in the area this is a must stop. If you are local, they do so much more than brunch. They have a bakery across the hall, they do catering, private dinners, special nights for dinner. Chef Claudia has brought an absolute gem to southern Indiana.

With tip, $57.75. The country fried steak was the thinnest I have ever gotten. The gravy that came with it to dip in was hyped up on the menu as being delicious. It tasted like the cheapest 50 cent store brand instant gravy packet. Almost zero flavor. I did appreciate the avocado and garlic aioli flavor in the wrap. The country fries ( cubes ) tasted stale , like they were fried, then kept warm. Neither of us ate but two bites each. Ketchup didn't help.

I had high hopes for this place. I was in the area for a business (day) trip and a couple of my…read moreco-workers came here for a lunch a few months ago. In fact, one said that the Happy Hour had catered his wedding. So we came in during lunch in good spirits, but the food just didn't deliver. I ordered the grilled tenderloin with fries (it was the daily special). The tenderloin had almost no flavor and was pounded out unevenly so it fell apart as I was trying to eat it. The sandwich was served on toasted white bread which is something I have never seen in my many years of Hoosier tenderloin eating. The fries were your standard, straight-out-of-the-bag-from-the-freezer variety, and they weren't seasoned at all. Copious amounts of salt and pepper were required to make them palatable. As for the decor, I wasn't really expecting much as there are basically 2 restaurants in Celestine and they're both sports bars. So the Happy Hour looks like a sports bar. The tables and chairs aren't particularly comfortable (they use standard banquet chairs) and there are some TVs around. And that's it. It was cheap (~$9) and the sweet tea was pretty good. If I was ever in Celestine again, I'd try the other sports bar before coming back to the Happy Hour. However, if the other place wasn't any better, I would probably drive to the next town to eat rather than come back here.
