We adopted our cat from Arf. After having been to many shelters I really appreciated how this shelter proceeds and we got such a sweet cat. Here are issues I encountered at other shelters that made my experience at Arf the more pleasant. Arf does not discriminate. Because I have little kids, I had been told at another shelter that I have my hands full therefore I am not a good candidate for adoption. Arf helped us choose a cat who would fit our family with little kids best. Arf reserves 3 animals for you to meet which makes the process less stressful. At another shelter, by the time I had met the first kitten I was interested in, the other ones were already adopted. At Arf I had 1 hour and a half to meet the 3 cats I was interested in and decide in peace. We had adopted a dog from another shelter who was supposedly good with little kids but the dog had a strong fear of strangers and food protectiveness which made him dangerous. The issues with this dog were know by that other shelter and had not been disclosed to us. The dog attacked our youngest unprovoked and we had to return him. At Arf our cat was described as very sweet and she truly is! Finally I really appreciated to receive a medical assessment and medical history of our cat which was not always available at other shelters. read more

The organization is top rate , friendly , informative , lovely kind employees that cater not only to the animals to be adopted but to the people they screen for adoption . I am thrilled that they look out for the animals make sure that the new parents understand the process of caring for a very scared and anxious animal my experience was top notch as I adopted one of the pups that was abandoned in Calistoga my "dash" is a beautiful sweet loving 4 yr old pup he was well taken care of during his short stay at the facility . I was given food , instructions in a nice folder , discount flyers , and a free grooming if I wanted for my pet post adoption along with a certificate for veterinary services to be obtained post two weeks after adoption which is a $250 coupon. The vca hospital called me the next day to set up an appt and I was truly impressed how the organization has everything put into place . I highly recommend this facility it is a gem and I am forever grateful to them for allowing me to obtain my "dash" as he is thriving and is our love bug . Our ARF experience started with an enthusiastic welcome when we entered. After a minimal wait, a volunteer shared a detailed history of the dog we wanted to meet and then took us outside for the meeting. After the meeting, he gave us time to talk. Once we had made our decision, we were quickly assisted by an employee with the adoption paperwork and then taken to the boutique where another employee made sure we had the supplies we needed (including a free bag of food). I am most impressed with medical care ARF provides. Our dog's teeth were cleaned, and a broken tooth was extracted. In addition, a small mass was removed and biopsied even though the vet believed (correctly) that it was benign. This care alone would have cost us several times the adoption fee. Additionally, everyone at ARF was friendly and very excited for us and for the dog we adopted. I will definitely recommend ARF to other would-be adopters. read more

My family and I adopted our dog, Artie, from ARF a month ago. We were all very impressed with the adoption process. It's obvious that the staff really cares about matching a pet with the right kind of home. If you want to just get in there, take a pet, and get out, then you'll be disappointed. However, if that's what you want, then I question whether you should be getting a pet. I was more than happy to answer the questionnaire and talk about our plans and intentions. The fee is more than reasonable considering that they took care of neutering my dog and much of what he needed health-wise. Plus, you get a complimentary wellness check with VCA, so all of those things would have cost a lot more if taken care of on my own. They also offer training and assistance once you adopt your pet. I haven't had to take advantage of these for my dog, as he's pretty well-behaved and I am not too bad at teaching him how to walk properly myself. Still, it's nice to know that these services are available if needed. read more

We came here in the hopes of adopting a doodle. Unfortunately a line had formed for the dog we went to look at at 9am, and it was adopted out before we could meet it. Nonetheless, we were highly impressed by all of the following: * They don't discriminate against those of us who aren't rich enough to own own a house with a yard. This is a huge breath of fresh air. * They clearly know and care a lot about their dogs with a vet visit, vaccinations, and neutering/spaying already finished before they even list the dog. * Adoption prices are very affordable. It's worth noting that if the dog/breed you're looking at is in high demand you'll have to show up very early to have a chance at adopting it. Three people had already lined up at 9am for a chance to meet the puppy we came to look on the very first day that it was available (their doors open at noon). This is simply the downside of a first-come first-served basis, and is definitely worth it given that it makes adoption of uncommon breeds available to those of more modest means. read more

I had followed ARF on Instagram for a few months when a coworker sent me one of their posts when I mentioned I was looking to adopt a cat. That was the first time I saw my boy Bud, and I just could not resist going in to him. He was part of a bonded pair with his brother Theo. They were together in a visitation room just waiting for me and I instantly fell in love. I truly only wanted one cat, but watching Theo come up to me and purr and cuddle with his brother - who could separate those two!? The staff were friendly, the place was clean and all the cats and dogs seemed very happy. Additionally, if you are like me and had zero pets upon arrival, they sell things like carriers/basic pet needs to get you through the first few days. They also sent me home with food and the medical history of my babies. I cannot thank them enough for bringing these two boys into my life, even if they knock over the potted plants at 3am. In appreciation of National Dog Day, I would just like to not only highly recommend ARF to all prospective dog/cat owners, but to thank them as well for introducing me to my loyal dog, Cinnamon. Running late after work, my fiancee and I rushed over to ARF hoping to get a peek at Cinnamon, a dog with an absenst photo and who had not been adopted at the mobile adoption event at the Veranda. I had a feeling that this would be the dog for us, simply based on the name alone (each batch of dogs that they save from kill shelters get named after a new theme; Cinnamon was named in the Fall). Each of the volunteers and workers were passionate about having Cinnamon adopted, even staying over closing time to help introduce us to Cinnamon and to fill out the necessary paperwork. Additionally, they offered free help and advice over the phone, with in- person behavior training at a discounted price. Cinnamon won us over immediately as the first thing she did when meeting us was flip over on her back and wave her paws around. After living with her a few days, we understood that that was her safety mechanism to all things she was unsure of; she'd plop over in the middle of walks when she strangers walked by. As with all shelters, you are never completely sure as to what happened before they were saved. However, with a bit of time and patience, your dog will naturally break out of its shell and fit perfectly with your family and routine. My favorite shelter, hands down. I wish we didn't have to have an animal shelter and all animals always had a loving home, however, if they have to make a pit stops before their forever home- I would want it to be this place for them. Each dog/cat get their own little room with a bed, clean water, and several toys (both soft and for chewing). On the window you get a brief of the dog including behavioral issues if any and approximate breed/age. The shelter tries to be as transparent as possible and also this place has a very thorough adoption process to make sure people/animals are a right match. There are play/bonding rooms if you want to check out of the pets to see if you would like to adopt. And they treat this place more of a "center" than a scary shelter. You can have birthday parties here and events to bring awareness and hopefully future adopters to the location. Nobody tries to pressure you to adopt and the customer service here is above and beyond. There are adoption and visiting hours so make sure to check out their website. Also!!! The best part is they will take care of the animals until they are adopted. It is a no-kill shelter which is also another reason why I love this location. I urge everyone to come and visit this place. Even if you can't adopt or foster, just visit because this is the standard that all shelters should be. read more

We had never had a cat before so Animal Rescue Foundation was quite the resource for us. There was someone at the front (if you can figure out which building to go to - it is the big one!) who helps with how the system works. You can look through the various animals that they have and once you think you want to go with checking out a few animals, you go to the desk in the back and fill out some basic paperwork and they get you an assigned person to help with meeting your target animals (15-20 mins max) after getting a briefing on available background info and health info. For the cats, I think they called each area a cat condo. A fully functional glassed-in space for each cat. The interaction really helped for us - we instantly connected with one kitten and decided to go forth. They provide all kinds of stuff, including starter food, free initial vet appointment, and more. They have a shop for other stuff you may need but it is all reasonably priced. For a cat, it is like having a new baby - you need a carrier. We went with a reasonably priced soft carrier. The people in the shop had all kinds of good advice (we asked for help). The animals at ARF vary from rescue animals, shelter animals, and more. The overall experience was so much better than a pet store. read more

I wish I could put a lower review. I recently visited to see a cat I was interested in. The girl who let my mom and I in the room with the cat took eons giving us an introduction to the cat. Even after figuring out we had owned many cats before, she still gave us over the top instructions on how to play with the cat and pet it even though she said he had no issues with being touched. It felt like we were trying to adopt a child and were being monitored by someone who believed we were child molesters. The experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Being treated that way while trying to get to know a pet didn't inspire us to want to take it home. We left pretty much immediately with the young girl watching us through the glass like we were criminals. I'm in awe that someone's lack of self awareness was capable of ruining an exciting experience like adopting a pet because they couldn't observe their own behavior as being over the top, unnecessary and quite frankly ridiculous. read more

Date of Incident: June 13, 2022 I wish I had something better to say about ARF but their spay/neuter clinic really messed up with my rescue cat. Tamale, a mama cat I rescued with her kittens, she was exhibiting signs of being feral. the original plan was to release her post-spay, and I stated this on my original online applications. As time when on she started opening up and accepting affection, so I switched plans to her being a long-term foster until she can be adopted out. I verbally expressed this to the team at drop off. When I arrived at their clinic, they were unorganized, rude, and kept multiple pet owners in a 4 x 4 entrance. I had a 9mo. old skittish cat who I was working on opening up, w/full grown dogs putting their faces in her cage. I asked staff if we could wait inside the clinic, the response was "uh no, please wait outside." but nearly 5 min after I asked, she allowed someone with two kittens inside the lobby. No plans or check-in's. We kind of just all waited outside until I had to ask them when they were ready to take my cat? I chalked this up to low-resources and stress of running a clinic with limited resources and high demand. I arrived 10 minutes after 4PM, the designated pick up time, and the staff completely ignored the owners who were there to pick up their cats/dogs. The receptionist yelled at all of us to get out of the 4 x 4 room because she could not handle handing over overstimulated Pitbull. This is where I was completely done. And while I was waiting, they started to gossip about how they can't 'understand' her Russian accent co-worker, how awful she is at her job. I was grossed out by their lack of professionalism and the nationalism grossly displayed in front of the public. I was in disbelief and floored. I finally got fed up and saw my cats cage sitting alone in the empty lobby. All staff was running around trying to find medication. I yelled to the back I'd like to check my cat out and a respectful person from the back came out and checked me out. Now this is where the nightmare gets EVEN WORSE. They told me to keep her away from her 6 week old kittens for 7 days. The cat was in distress all night. Crying. I've never heard her cry since rescuing her. I called my Vet and they were horrified that they told her to separate from the kittens as she was still nursing. She can suffer from mastitis, and sure enough in the morning she was engorged and in pain. I immediately put the kittens back with no issue. And I finally got a good look at Tamale post surgery and I noticed **THEY TIPPED HER EAR!** I can't believe it. I cried for two days I was so devastated. Not once while reading my contract they stated to me that they were going to tip her ear. They just stated she will have belly tattoos. No where at any time was I told that they were going to tip her ear, because I would have said no. They provided a service to my cat that they had no business or legal right to make that decision without me, her legal owner. They treated her like a thing, rushed her care, I guess they had to get in and out. But because of their mistake a cat will have a harder time getting adopted. Now that Tamale has a tipped ear she's more like not to get adopted. Already being an older skittish cat already made it hard for her. If she ever gets out animal control will ignore her so her chance for mortality is risen. But more than anything it was unnecessary pain. I expected WAY better from a rescue foundation operated since 1991. I'm heartbroken and angry. read more

I adopted my dog from here five years ago and had a great experience. I went to meet another dog and the woman, I'm assuming volunteer, was so rude to me! She refused to answer any of my questions--instead stating "we do our homework" multiple times without even asking someone else for help because she clearly didn't know the answers. She was so condescending and rude to me I had to walk out. Assuming she was rude because I look younger and alternative, but I've been a homeowner for over 12 years and have a ton of experience with dogs! This place seriously sucks now. Sad they don't want to adopt dogs to people with dog-safe yards who love animals and are super experienced dog owners just because of how they look. read more

I adopted a beautiful Doberman from Joybound, when I first met him, I noticed his collar was on too tight, the volunteer agreed and loosened it, I decided to adopt him, they told me he was a stray and had received medical care from injuries and also neutered, they were insistent that I read his medical history and signed off saying I understood. I brought him home he was coughing and shaking his head, I took him to VCA vet using the free vet coupon from joybound worried he might still have kennel cough based on his medical records, she said he was fine, his ear was torn and had healed, they just left it hanging, I asked the vet if it should be fixed she said no, she would be concerned if he was a hunting dog going thru weeds and getting it caught but since he isn't, it would be ok, she looked in his ears and gave him an exam and said he was fine, luckily the coughing went away, it was from the tight collar and not kennel cough, fast forward to 3 months later, I took him to a different vet since he was still shaking his head a lot, he had to have his ears cleaned really badly as they were really dirty and had yeast in one of them, thankfully no infection, medicine was prescribed for him, 450.00 later, the vet said it had been like that a long time because his ears had black streaks. I feel like the agencies that had him in their care should have made sure he was ok read more

We adopted a beautiful Shepard mix dog from ARF a few weeks ago. The team at ARF were extremely knowledgeable both during the adoption process and in the weeks following. They gave a through overview of our new doggo's history and what we can do to help her thrive in her new home. They checked in shortly after to see how she was doing and have been extremely responsive to any queries we've had. The facility was clean, calm and organized. i've adopted 3 pets from here, i got my first dog here, and a cat, and just a couple weeks ago another dog. Each time i went i had an amazing experience, all the animals are very well taken care of, and they get adopted so fast which makes me so happy. A generous donor paid for our babies adoption fee and we'd decided he was perfect even before we heard this. Our boy has lots of allergies and has a very extensive medical record and despite the treatments he needed, he was provided everything to accommodate him. He had a few items to go home with including 2 crates, a bed, a blanket, 4 toys, his limited diet food which was almost full, and all his medications. He's been in our home for 2 weeks now and is the best dog ever! read more

We adopted our first dog (Jack) just three weeks ago :) the staff was very pleasant.. Matthew (the adoptions specialist) walked him out to the courtyard for us to meet. He did say that we had to decide that day and if we needed more time we could schedule another appointment. Although I felt this was a lot of pressure to decide on a dog within 5 minutes of meeting him, he did assure us that if there are any issues we can bring him back. We decided to take the plunge and take Jack. We had to dog proof our house so pick him up the following day. They did charge a fee to board him for the night, so if you are planning to adopt, I recommend adopting that day if you don't want to pay a boarding fee. While Jack was at the shelter, the behavioral staff did work with him to walk better on leash as well as sit. Although the first two weeks were tough for us, I was able to reach out to the behavioral staff with all my questions and they were quick to reply with suggestions. I particularly talked to Jess and Ana regarding all my issues and they were great! Jack is settling into his new home, thank you Arf for making our first dog adoption a success! We were searching for a dog when we finally decided to stop by ARF. We found these sweet little pittie mixes and saw this humongous Mix named Dude. Dude was so big we wanted to see him just for fun. Well, Dude is now buddy and has been with us Since April of 2019. We had a few behavioral issues and ARF was on top of getting us information and leading us to sources to make sure Buddy fit in to our household. Well fast forward a few months and let me tell you. My brother Rob moved back to California recently and because he doesn't like to be alone he brought his dog "Rollo" with him. Rob is a U.S. Army Veteran and retired on a very fixed income so it can be challenging to make sure bills, etc are paid and little if anything is left by month's end. I'm a Big dog lover since childhood and currently have 2 exceptional dogs. So naturally I inquired about Rollo's personality, breed, health care, etc. When I heard he had some difficulty providing for Rollo's needs periodically I started looking into getting assistance from a pet adoption organization or similar group to help my brother provide all the things that Rollo requires as a pet dog. Since Rob is a Veteran he was able to register Rollo into a program at "Joybound" in Walnut Creek, CA. where Rob can take Rollo for health exams, Rabies shots flea and heartworm medication, and most other needs related to proper pet healthcare for free or at a substantially reduced cost! I highly recommend ARF in Walnut Creek! I recently found my cat here. Upon arrival you are greeted and then fill out a questionnaire on what you are looking for in a pet, and some info about your home environment. You then wait for an ARF representative (volunteer? not sure) to assist you with visiting all of the furry friends waiting for new homes. It's actually really nice because you check off what animals you would like to meet, they recommend picking three. Each animal has a sheet on their door with some information about their disposition that helps with background info. This was one of my favorite things and really helped me as a first time pet owner. The cats are in 'kitty condos', which is awesome for them and you because if you want to meet them you get to go inside and spend time with them. This is a major selling point for me because this was a big commitment and I wanted to be sure it was a good match both ways. At the previous shelter I visited you couldn't visit with the cats, which makes it hard to get to know them. Major thank you and shout out to Genevieve! Genevieve was kind, patient and all around awesome! She answered my many questions. She also let me know some of the cats were back from mobile adoption and that's how I found my cat! I am really thankful for Genevieve and people like her for making animals and people's lives brighter by spending time to make a match happen. After picking a cat you go to a different room to complete paperwork and pay the adoption fee, etc. It's very simple, easy and fast. ARF has a store where you can buy a carrier or purchase a cardboard carrier for $10. They also sell food, litterboxes, litter, etc. All proceeds from sales at the store go to ARF. The representatives at the store were super helpful and friendly too. They give you a small bag of Purina One (the food they feed the cats at ARF) to get you started. Ample parking. Our kitty, Maddie (a Chocolate point Siamese) was rescued from "death row" by ARF. With disappointment, I've read some of the negative reviews. To adopt a pet from ARF, you have to remember, the animals here are the one's NOBODY wanted. Perhaps ARF should do a better job of letting people know many of the animals will need special care. I dunno. They did tell us that Maddie has a serious problem. When we adopted Maddie, she had a very bad eye infection. There was a question whether or not she would be able to see. ARF gave us medication for Maddie and told us we could bring her back. My son, Jonny, was seven years old and put the eye drops faithfully in Maddie's eye. It was a wonderful lesson for such a small boy to take on the responsibility. He cared for her, taught her to use the liter box, and even cleaned it out. I can assure you, Maddie was not going back to ARF. Six years later, Maddie still can't see very well and because of her vision problems, she is very shy. Maddie will only come out if Jonny calls her. During the day, she sleeps in his room and somehow, gets under the covers. It's very cute (see photo). Jonny spent a summer at the ARF Day Camp and learned a lot about dogs and cats and how to care for them. One day when I came to pick him up, he was sitting with a cat that had been at ARF for nine years! Seems that every time this kitty was adopted, it just didn't work out. But ARF will take care of this cat. She is home at last. I guess what I'm trying to say is that ARF is a very special place, with a very special mission, "ARF saves dogs and cats who have run out of time at public shelters and brings people and animals together to enrich each others lives." Pickup was contactless, and I appreciated the free wellness exam with a veterinarian near me. This is a very fine organization and I am super happy that these two cats are rescues.
