Almost eight years ago, we adopted our dog, Espy, from Joybound when he was just two months old, and Joybound has been a meaningful part of his life, and ours, ever since. I still vividly remember the adoption experience. Espy came with an incredibly thorough profile, clear instructions, medical records, and resources through Joybound's partners to help us get him set up with the right food, veterinary care, and everything else a new puppy needed. As first-time dog parents, that level of thoughtfulness gave us so much confidence bringing him home. Over the years, our relationship with Joybound only grew. Espy attended puppy play when he was little, later returned for training, completed his basic manners and Canine Good Citizen training, and eventually became a certified therapy dog through Joybound. It has been incredibly special to watch the little puppy we adopted here grow up and eventually come back to serve the community himself. Through all of these experiences, we've gotten to know many of Joybound's staff and volunteers. What stands out most is how genuinely and tirelessly they care, not only about animals, but also about the people and communities around them. We try to attend their local events whenever we can, and we've also watched them step up beyond our immediate community to help animals and families during disasters and other times of need. Joybound is so much more than an animal shelter to us. It is a thoughtfully built organization that supports animals throughout their lives and creates lasting connections between pets, people, and the community. We feel incredibly lucky and privileged to have been part of the Joybound family for nearly eight years. We recently learned that they received approval a few days ago to expand their facility and bring even more programs and services to the community, and we couldn't be more excited to see what comes next.
Words cannot express how thankful I am for Joybound; without them, I wouldn't have been able to get my dog Bella the help she needed. The staff went above and beyond to make sure Bella received everything she needed even when things got hard staying professional, reliable and most of all Compassionate I'm so appreciative of Joybound and everyone on the team. Thank you guys so much.
I have had two wonderful experiences with Joybound. I adopted my first dog about four months ago. Despite trying everything and having help from the behaviorist and the wallflower class, the little dog was just not a good fit for our family and I had to rehome her back to Joybound. They were wonderful about taking her back and helping me through the grieving process. Shout out to Ursula and Mitch for their patience and kindness. Last week, I adopted our new dog Fairy Lily . She is a perfect fit. I really didn't want a puppy, but it doesn't matter what you want when it's time for you to add to your family. It just happens! My only disappointment is that they didn't take a picture of me and Fairy Lily to post on Instagram. They didn't do it either time so it must be because I'm old and ugly because I sure noticed that they post a lot of pictures and for me not to have my picture. Either time is kind of suspect but I'll get over it ha ha I highly recommend Joybound and also their training classes. We took the basic manners and wallflower class with Shelly with our first dog and it was so helpful. I look forward to doing it with Fairy Lily once she has all her shots. I want to give a shout out to one of their counselors named Eric. He did not help me with the adoption process, but he was the first contact that I made over the couple weeks that I was coming in looking for a second dog and when I was in the process of adopting Fairy Lily, he saw us and came over and was just really friendly and kind. Thank you, Joybound for completing my family and fulfilling my dream of having two dogs!
They have a passion for animals that is unrivaled. Their facility is clean and they care for all the animals as if they were family. I was so lucky to be able to adopt a little dog after fostering her. She is so well behaved and has no odd vices or negative behaviors. I strongly recommend adopting from Joybound instead of buying from a breeder!
My best friend lost her mom to cancer a few weeks ago. My friend lives out of state- so I have been assisting her locally. Her mom adopted the sweetest chihuahua from Arf back in 2021, the fur baby went blind about a year ago. So we were really concerned about how she would settle in a new environment, and we're trying to rehome the dog I went to Joybound a few weeks ago to ask if there was any chance they take back their animals in these circumstances. The woman at the welcome desk was so helpful explaining yes they do. She walked me thru the process to fill out the forms online They got back to my friend promptly to setup an appointment for a behavior assessment and vet evaluation. We had our appointment yesterday at 2. We arrived a half hour early so we wouldn't be rushed , and to help Lily stay as calm as possible. Everyone we encountered was delightful and so kind. No judgements- Lily came alive with tail wags and enthusiasm to be back at such a supportive rescue group. She was just basking in the attention and love. She passed her behavior test with flying colors. We were told she most likely will be going to a foster home first for a few weeks before she's available for adoption. We were told we can follow her online with her name, and see when she becomes available and she won't be on the website anymore once she finds her next loving home. Thank you Joybound for standing behind your animals and supporting families We also did not have to pay a surrender fee. We were encouraged to take our time and enjoy complementary coffee or tea, also offered a box of tissues We were already pulling out of the parking lot before our scheduled appointment time Can't think you enough for your kindness all around this hard experience
I had multiple excellent experiences with Joybound in several different atmospheres. I first discovered them when they held a pet vaccination clinic in Antioch. I had two new kittens that I took in as a foster, but of course my family and I fell in love with them and kept them. At this event I got both of their first kitten shots, rabies shot, microchips, flea medicines and some cat food all for free!! Everyone was so nice and although there was a lot of people there taking advantage of the free services, they communicated effectively and everything was organized and not chaotic. I joined their mailing list and found out about their next event in Richmond. The kittens and I went down there to get their second kitten shots and cat food, for free! I got on the waiting list for low cost spay and neuter clinic. Friendly staff, nicely organized. I was suprised when I got the call from them for the neutering appts quicker than expected! Brought both kittens down, everything went well, again for free!! Today my husband, our daughter and I went down to their free pets stocking decorating event. Met with smiles, super cute room filled with stockings and puff paint pens on the tables. They had cookies and hot apple cider. All for free. We decorated stockings for the kittens and our other cat, it was a lot of fun and they had a good turnout! While our stockings dried, we walked around a bit and found they had a boutique! We made Christmas donations for both cat and dog items that they matched! And we got our large dog some Christmas Jammie's on clearance for $5. Boutique was well priced, my husband got a Joybound hat! So onto the animas they had there! First we passed the cats. All of them cuddling in super nice beds, they had nice toys, scratch pads, colorful wallpaper in their individual rooms, information sheets on each door for each pet. The dogs had the same, nice fuzzy beds, toys, little slots to give them treats down this tube. So cute!! I typically can't look at shelter pets because I feel so bad for them. These animas all looked happy and very well taken care of! There was staff walking around regularly checking in on people since they had adoption available. I asked a few questions they were able to answer no problem! They seemed very caring and committed to the animals and putting their best foot forward in helping the get homes. Building super clean, staff super nice, animas all cozy. Overall, we have a great opinion of Joybound with all these diverse experiences we've had with them. The people are so nice and welcoming. We're so grateful for them and the help they provided my kittens, saved us a ton of money!!! And for all they do, thank you!!!!!!
I've gotten my kitten from here, and she's so sweet. She's playful and likes cuddles. I've had her for about a month now and she's doing great!
I went to Joybound what used to be ARF, after having a bad experience at ARF 12 years ago. Much better now, and I adopted the sweetest puppy who is doing great after being with me for a month so far. I'm looking forward to many years together! Joybound has a great facility and great practices to help future adopters make the right choice of pet. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because one of the employees tried to tell me that the retractable leash I had to use that day wasn't recommended due to the possibility of losing control of the animal. I'm 57 and have had dogs my entire life, and know how to use the leash!
I had an amazing experience at Joybound today! I saw a kitten I adored on their website and drove an hour from Fremont hoping that she hadn't been adopted by the time I got there. Maddie was truly the best. She made the experience so special and easygoing and a day I will never forget. My little bean is precious and as I'm typing this she is currently sleeping on my lap with the cutest little purrs. I can't thank the team enough for all they do caring for these amazing fur babies - go check them out and adopt your new family member asap!!! Best decision I ever made.
I got a cat from Joybound - a senior cat that was not very friendly but "called to me". After four visits she purred and accepted petting, so we took her home! I love that they continue to ask about our pet, and value our feedback. This service was free to me as a veteran, and I'm proud to support their "Pets to Vets" outreach.
Great service when I found my cat Mary, they gave me some information about her and the little animal book about what cats and dogs and different animals what is dangerous for them and once you picked out your pet they they give you some information once you're done signing everything they let you spend some time with your pets gain some trust 5 star!
I rescued my Bella here. This place is amazing and gives you the necessary time to spend with the animal that is critical, so you're able to monitor their behavior to see if they're going to be a good match for you. Bella was awesome and she's been the best 20 pound dog that I've ever rescued. I have zero regrets in the world. They made the process simple, easy and enjoyable and the adoption fee was 2-3x less than other rescue groups in the area. Thanks Joybound!

I can't say enough good things about ARF. We adopted our cat 3 years ago from them. He has been just great. My husband and I both work full time, so we were looking for an older cat that wouldn't require as much attention as a kitten. We were introduced to "Merlin", a 5 year old black medium-haired cat. He was rescued from a fire in Calaveras County. He has become a full-fledged family member. Super affectionate and friendly. We did rename him though. Since he was able to rise from the ashes of the fire, we now call him Phoenix. read more
It is with great excitement that my Mom adopted my new little brother from this shelter today. He is a 3 year old chihuahua mix which my Mom has affectionately named Romeo. My Mom had been researching dogs for a while knowing she wanted a small dog that was easy to pick up. She checked out other places but never found a dog that she bonded with. We decided to come here today after a recommendation from a friend of my Mom. We got there early (about 2 hours before their adoption hours) but they allowed us to walk around and look at all the cats and dogs available in their kennels. I was really impressed how clean this facility is and how nice everyone was too! Generally though animals lovers = good people but they were so helpful answering my Mom's questions. We came across a kennel room with 4 chihuahuas and my Mom instantly fell in love with the littlest black one. She wanted to meet him and see if he was a pup that she could see herself taking home with her. We left for an hour and came back after talking about it. We then signed up to meet with an adoption counselor and of course Romeo (who was named by the shelter as "Sir Arthur" (Ha! Ha!) My Mom filled out the required application and was kindly interviewed by Fiona. Fiona explained where the animals came from and how they were transported from the Central Valley to the many no-kill facilities in the Bay Area. After interviewing my Mom, Fiona felt like my Mom was an excellent candidate to adopt a smaller dog and felt that "King Arthur" might be a good fit. We were taken to a small meeting room where the cute chihuahua instantly ran into my Mom's arms and licked her to death. We were hooked!!! The good news for Romeo and my Mom was this was his very first day up for adoption and my Mom was the first interested person! How lucky! The facility also has a nice backyard area where you can walk the dog and get to know him in a relaxing setting. It also gives you a good chance to see how your dog interacts with others and dogs. We got lucky and Romeo was perfect for my Mom. The adoption process is pretty quick and they give you lots of information regarding the micro-chipping of the pet, their vaccinations, neutering information and coupons to use for future food purchases. They also have a large store where you can buy all the products you need to start of the new adventure with your beloved pet. I walked out of there spending over $100 for my new little brother. Their prices are great for the products they sell. Adoption prices for dogs is $225 and that of course includes the vaccinations, micro chip, neutering cost and your first veterinarian appt 2 weeks later. They offer a $50 discount for seniors which my Mom was happy to get. Definitely highly recommend this clean and friendly facility if you are looking for the perfect pet. It's personalized and apparent that the pets there are well taken care of and loved by the staff. Such a great experience! I can't stop smiling! read more
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience here on Saturday 5/31/14. This review is for both ARF and the Maddie's Pet Adoption event. Upon entering the building, we were immediately greeted by a sweet lady. We told her we were there to see the dogs and she gave us paperwork to fill out and once we had done that, we were given a # and told that we were free to walk around & pick three dogs we would be interested in meeting once our # was called. We did just that and long story short, we found our sweet little boy whose name was Banana Nut, now known as Walter. You can tell the people working there really care about these little creatures and take pride in being a part of this wonderful organization and adoption event. Everyone we worked w/ was helpful in answering any questions we had. We received a bag of Purina puppy chow and a folder full of helpful information for our new pup. We purchased his collar, leash, crate, and toys before having our first family photo taken. With the adoption, we were given the opportunity to take him to one of the local VCA animal hospitals within the first 5 days of adoption for a free check up which we took advantage of before finding a vet closer to home. I received an email from ARF a little over a month after his adoption checking in to see how things were going- I liked the fact that they followed up and they attached our family photo. Clean facility, organized, friendly people- I was impressed and would definitely recommend ARF. We are smitten with our little boy- he has brought so much happiness to our lives. read more

I can't say enough about how happy we are with our ARF experience! We adopted our new fur baby from a mobile adoption after trolling their website for weeks and we couldn't be happier. Their adoption process is very thorough to ensure a lifetime commitment for you and your new family member and the volunteers are wonderful and helpful. They provide a knowledgeable team of volunteers with a wealth of information. Backup documentation on your new pet's health and the adoption fee includes micro chipping, neutering and up to date shots. Also, coupons are provided for training classes, VCA hospital and Pet Food Express. I visited ARF's beautiful facility in Walnut Creek years ago and always knew when I was ready for a pet again that I wanted to rescue..."Adopt don't shop"! Thank you ARF!! read more

We recently adopted a kitten from ARF. It was such a great process and we love our new kitty (Buddy). I had been looking in the Oakland/Berkeley area for a few weeks, and with Covid the kittens were getting snatched up quickly. I expanded my search to the 925 area and found that two kittens were available at ARF. They were newly posted and no photos. I posted my interest and heard back from Pam within 24 hours that "Tweety" was available. We talked on the phone, she described him, took some photos and we had a match. Within a few hours we were taking him home with a great packet of info and food. It was seemless at ARF and really safe. They strickly follow protocols. I got a couple of follow up emails from Pam checking in to see how were were doing. I believe they really care what happens with their animals and their volunteers are really committed. I would highly recommend! Attaching some photos of our adorable, lovable, frisky, playful adventurous buddy. He is a wonderful addition to our family. read more

First off, ARF, in the adoption area, is the animal shelter for rich people. It is clean, the animal all have beds and ample toys, quiet, and there are free snacks. You go in with the warm-fuzzy feeling that all of these animals have been saved and will get homes. A lot of local rescues have a bit of a beef with ARF as they pull (that is rescue speak for getting) their dogs from shelters all through the Central Valley instead of locally, but the shelters in the Central Valley have higher kill rates and do not have dozens of local rescues to minimize the animals killed in shelters. It's just an ugly situation, and I have no clue why people think animals are things to be bought and neglected. Adult adoptions is totally where it is at. They also have what seems like a disproportional amount of young, highly-adoptable animals, but I am not faulting the shelter scouts, as it is hard to pick who to save and who to leave to fate. It makes their success rates look better, though. For my hypocrisy, we have fostered for a local, volunteer-run rescue, and we also have a hot mess of a dog adopted from ARF. She was in foster homes and then the ARF facility for about 3 months before she was adopted as she had all sorts of medical problems (gunshot wound, non-cancerous mass, puppies--I am not exaggerating on the hot mess), and quite frankly, she was obviously abused and is still scared of random things, like feet as we suppose she must have been kicked at. She was also terrified of most men, which made walking her delightful. She was listed as being good for first time owners and good with other dogs. The amazing adoption counselor knew we were not first time owners and thought we were the "perfect family," even so much that she reserved the dog while we went home to grab our other dog. No way was this a dog for first time owners, especially with her fear issues, and she is scared of many dogs (from 9 pound chihuahuas to 80 pound German shepherds) and has some resource guarding issues. Fortunately, as fosters we have had abused shelter dogs, and like most, the hot mess has transformed to happy, healthy, fun-loving dog. It is extremely satisfying to see how far she has came. For the record, my dog was from the Tehama County Shelter. I had to look up Tehama, and found out the entire county has fewer people than Walnut Creek. Their training classes are amazing, and half off for adopters, so even better for us. They do much more than adoption included discounted spays for certain demographics, and the humane education seems effective and needed. They also have a therapy dog program and feeding programs for seniors (feeding for their pets, not the seniors). ARF has a 4 star rating on Guide Star, and reports over a million in surplus funds, thanks to the celebrity banking. By the way, y'all know I am a life-long St Louis Cardinals fan, right? read more

We've adopted all 3 of our dogs from ARF. Most recently little Irma. ARF does a great job giving you an accurate assessment of personality traits and the health of the dog. They interview you as well to ensure a good match is made. read more

We are so happy with ARF. We spoke with them for awhile and by the time we were done they knew exactly what we wanted. We saw a few kitties and adopted our Sunshine. Sunshine is now with us almost a month. We had to put down our last cat down a few months ago after 16 years. We were lonesome. There was a void in our life. Then we decided to go to ARF. Thank you ARF for bringing sunshine into our lives. read more

I've been wanting a dog for some time. With my husband working long hours. Just my lazy sleepy kitty was not enough. I had been in many shelters around the bay. No dog clicked with me. I won't buy an animal that doesn't click with me or my husband. You got to make sure that animal is the one. I walked into ARF to look at some beagle mix pups (not even close) I saw two dogs that my husband had to come down and see. We had to come back the next day due to not being able to even interact with the animals. It wasmt durring adoption hours (makes sense don't want to get any animals sick). I retured as soon as they opened and got my paper work and name on the list to make sure I get to see the animals I picked. My husband wanted to see the 6month old Burdock(stated he was a hound mix)(not even close). As soon as we got outside to go for a walk alone we clicked we played he listened so well for his age he just wanted to be loved and show it back. We walked back to the ladys and said that's it. We didn't want to see the other dog. We had one accident right when we got home. But other then that he was perfect! Loves walks. Listens. Kennel trained. My favorite part is he isn't a barker(enless he has a feeling that its needed) ARF gives you a free visit to VCA take it. They work so well with animals. I will recommend everyone looking for a dog or cat to visit ARF. And take your time picking. Its a commitment getting an animal dont cause them more stress then they already have read more

We went in twice looking to bring a sweet kitty to our home. They worked with us until we eventually found the perfect match. She's the sweetest girl, and we couldn't be happier. The people at ARF are very knowledgeable, informative, and caring. The animals appear to be treated well there, and we hope they all find loving homes. Thanks for Venus, ARF! In 2004, I adopted the wonderful Domino from ARF on Easter Sunday, along with my family. He passed away at the ripe old age of 17-ish in 2013. He was a wonderful dog that ARF saved from a shelter in Madera, and worked hard to make sure he went to a good home and never knew the abuse and neglect he had survived (our vet found birdshot in his belly from his previous life). Domino was such a kind and gentle soul, and it's thanks to the wonderful people at ARF for noticing him at the shelter and rescuing him. When it was time for me to adopt again, this time with my husband in our newly purchased home, I headed to ARF "just for fun" to look around, again, "just to show" my husband what a wonderful facility and organization they have in Walnut Creek. All adoption counselors were so friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. It already was such a fantastic experience. And yes, we did find a dog that day that we wanted to take home, but she was not available until three days later (it was a "pre-meet"). We arrived Wednesday to get "Ellie"--arriving an hour and a half before early bird sign-up to ensure our chances of getting her. But, another nice lady arrived even EARLIER and obviously it was meant to be for her and Ellie, and for us and Wakefield (who I had seen on the website and who looked very cute with his shiny nose and floppy ears). Seriously, the second I saw the nice lady ahead of us in line, I said "awesome!" and "we can see Wakefield." When it was time to meet Wakefield, who was literally available for adoption one minute before we saw him, the adoption counselors were so nice, helpful, friendly, and accommodating. We chatted a bit, met Wakefield, chatted some more, and made sure it was a good match (honestly, the dog/cat chooses you, not the other way around). After we decided it was a match (there is no pressure, they let you discuss with any family members and answer any questions you may have), we began the adoption process, which the adoption counselors guided us through efficiently. Then, they have a pet store IN the building where you can get any supplies you may need. The prices are definitely excellent, and profits go toward ARF! Can't beat that. It's nearly a month since we adopted Ollie (fka Wakefield) and we couldn't be happier. He is such a smart, exuberant boy and has made our lives so much more exciting and goofy. He teaches us to greet the day with a big tail wag, and that tail doesn't stop wagging until it's bedtime (though I think I've also seen him wag his tail in his sleep?). He loves his toys and loves to learn new tricks. If you can't adopt a dog/cat, don't hesitate to donate to this wonderful organization so they can help our furry friends. I even had people donate to them when I got married. These guys do wonderful work for animals in the community. Oh, and even after the adoption, if you have any questions, ARF will gladly help you! When my husband and I decided to adopt two kitties back in January '07, we asked around to find the best place to do it and wound up making the drive from Oakland to Walnut Creek. This place is beautiful and the cats and dogs seemed incredibly well cared for. We signed in and looked around while we waited to meet with a counselor, who walked us through the process and interviewed us. I was nervous that she'd see right through my "I love cats!" act (I actually only liked them at that point; I absolutely love them now!) and pelt me with questions until I confessed a not-so-pleasant feline experience from my childhood (my mother, uh, accidentally closed the garage door on our cat when I was in kindergarten...admittedly, was the cat's fault for trying to run beneath it). Anyway, no such thing happened--whew! We did need to show our lease, which stated that we're allowed to have cats. We introduced ourselves to a half-dozen cats we thought might be a good match, but weren't convinced that any two of them were perfect. So we asked if there were any who hadn't been checked into their kitty condos yet...and lo and behold, our counselor disappeared and returned with two frisky black and white kitties, a brother-sister pair we knew were perfect from the moment they leapt out of their cardboard carriers. They were six months old at the time, and had just come from a shelter in Hayward. I can't imagine life without these crazy little guys now! I'd definitely recommend checking out ARF. When we live in a place that allows us to have a dog, we'll be back! read more

I've been an avid dog owner and long time animal lover. But since my 14 year old lab passed about 5 years ago, I have not and could not have another dog. My wife talked me into to taking our kids to ARF to look around and educate them regarding adoptions. Little did we know we were going to be picked by a lovely Siberian Husky to be part of her family. I have to commend the staffs at ARF for their patience and due diligence of matching the adopter with the potential animal. It's rare in this day and age where quality is more important then quantities. I felt the whole process needed to make sure we were the right fit for our new family member. I would recommend everyone to go there and get to know the animals and ARF's philosophy. And to top it off, the facility is top notch, clean, family friendly, and a lot of sports memorabilia. We have adopted two furry family members from ARF over the last 5 years - Oscar, our Rat Terrier-Dachsund-Pomerian mix and recently Barbie, a Havenese-Poo mix. In both cases, ARF did a thorough evaluation of the dogs' health and social characteristics, so that we could adopt with confidence. More than this, for both Oscar and Barbie, who are small dogs, ARF offered a calm, secure transition environment for the dogs to transition from a scary situation to our home, where they feel safe and cherished . After searching for a kitten up to 5 year old cat in our local shelters my boyfriend and I decided to go to ARF to see if we could find a kitty for us. I have to say after giving our information to the staff they were the most helpful and cheerful people to work with an adoption. My boyfriend John and I are now proud pawrents to 2 very loving boys that we couldn't be more happier with. The adoption for these boys was easy and fun for us to donate for at the gif shop. As we know that ARF is a nonprofit organization we made sure to purchase all of our kitty needs there. read more

What a great place to adopt any pet. I'm very satisfied with the staff here. They really do accommodate the perfect pet for you. We recently adopted our new family member Walter, formally known at Wyoming, from ARF and he fits perfect in our family. The staff here made sure that the any adopted pet is going to the right person. They also make sure you have all the essentials you need with you before you take your new family member home. I highly recommend adopting at this place because they are not a kill shelter and they really do care for the animals that they take in. Thank you ARF! read more

I adopted my dog from ARF about 3 weeks ago and she is just darling. They rescued her from a shelter in Fresno and when they got her she was in very bad shape. They spayed her, cut her matted hair, gave her all her shots and medications. They also microchipped her and set me up with everything I would need. They were very helpful when I went in to see her and I adopted her on the spot. They have asked about her as a follow up. They also give a discount on dog training classes if you adopt from them. read more
