Charred greens, halloumi, eggs & pork belly. Great Coffee too.

This is the place I go for breakfast when I'm in Melbourne. Great food, good coffee, what more can a man want. ;-)

Cappuccino & Flat White

This is my absolute favorite brunch location! I've dined in twice & gotten take away heaps and have yet been disappointed. It is always busy but for good reason so be ready to put your name on a list of dining in. The coffee is superb every time and cannot go wrong with any main you choose. I recommend the persian fetta potato croquette or Melbourne's favorite (and usually mine too), the smashed avo! The croissants are delicious as well. Highly recommended and a must add to your list of places to go for brunch!! Highlights -best place for coffee & brunch -amazing presentation -exposed brick interior -champagne & OJ available to mix to make your own mimosa -takeaway available -outdoor seating with heaters -off chapel st

Bircher!
Tresna L.

With banging coffee, an interesting brunch menu and super friendly and efficient staff Dukes gets my thumbs up as a great all rounder. The bircher muesli is loaded with cinnamon and apple and for $10 is a great way to get through the morning. But let's get more serious and talk about the Avo and Hummus toast. There's obviously some avo going on, but then throw on a poached egg, some big chunks of candied bacon and sprinkle the whole mess with dukkah. Good lord, my mouth is in rapture whenever I eat this.

Best coffee in Windsor. Period. (Read below for food.) And...Finally, I decided to put my thoughts about this place on Yelp. I love this place. I love its atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. The place can get a little bit loud during peak hours, but overall it is a nice environment to sit down and enjoy your drink. Back as a student in my Swinburne days, Dukes (Journeyman) provided my caffeine fix for all of my Uni life. Years later as a Windsor local, the consistency of the coffee is still the same, so they are still providing caffeine for my blood stream. How cool is that? BUT, what about the food? OK. Mind you, the rating above is just for coffee. Since Dukes became Journeyman (By the way, I loved Dukes' branding and I find Journeyman name pretty hipster-ish), the management has changed, and its menu became unstable. I am not sure if it is the management's or chef's idea (apparently it is under chef's control), they removed my favourite items on the menu to replace with weird ones. I remember I ordered a piece of banana bread and instead received two banana breads on top of each other washed with some syrup and some cream with parsley on the top. I mean, what the hell. Also, blueberry pancakes are gone, even that menu item - which was my favourite, don't judge - fish finger sandwich is gone after a short time. If you are hungry, my only recommendation will be baked beans with feta. If you want to treat yourself, add a poached egg on top of it. There you go! You cannot go wrong with it, can you? Oh by the way, before I forget, if you are not a fan of baked beans, don't forget to check out the fridge for other delicious selection of sandwiches or sausage rolls. Fridge items are not on the menu you will be handed. Last minute tip delivered, I'm off.

Duck egg with kale, triple cream cheese and truffle.

I honestly can't talk this place up enough. I came for the coffee, but will return for the food. I went with my sister and 1 year old niece. The staff were super quick and friendly. Considering it was a Saturday at brunch, we only waited 10 minutes if that for a table. The menu isn't massive, but what they do cook, they do amazingly well. It was nice to see things like truffles and duck eggs on the menu. Something a bit special and different from just eggs bennedict. Reasonable prices considering it's a trendy Chapel Street venue. I will be going back here again that's for sure!

Fish tacos on soft corn tortillas

Dukes is right near my UNI and that's where I get my coffee/chai fix. I've never eaten there but decided to give it a shot the other day. The menu looks delicious and I was tossing between the corn fritters and fish tacos. I went for the tacos as a semi healthier option. When it came out, it looked delicious but sadly it didn't taste as good as it looked. Everything was really fresh but there was no taste explosion in my mouth... Even after squeezing lime and adding salt. The mayo was nice and creamy but without a strong taste, same as the fish. Disappointing :( I would still go back and try something else and possibly leave ordering tacos when I go to Mexican restaurants!

I was on Chapel St yesterday and decided to try Dukes. I had read quite a few good things online about this place but I didn't realise it would live so highly up to its reputation. The baristas are like crazy scientist as they swirl an elixir so good that you think to yourself, is this really coffee. I don't want to discount in any way what goes on in the kitchen because they also so some amazing work. I ordered the saltbush lamb which was cooked to perfection. I was expecting a little more but at the same time was very satisfied. I must say though that I was very surprised to find a café of this calibre on Chapel St. Lately I have not come here as much as I used to but now that I know about Dukes I might be here more often.

As of writing, I really like Dukes. That said, I've been here several times and it's definitely possible to have a dud experience. My advice is to go during non-peak times and think carefully before having a second coffee... it's about twice as strong as a hit anywhere else so you can easily get a bit jittery. What I do love here are the ham and cheese toasted sandwiches (I opt gluten-free) and their house-made beans. Delish. My husband swears they have Melbourne's best ham and cheese croissants. Definitely worth a pit stop.

Sally P.

I've had some hit and miss experiences at Dukes, having been several times now. The fit out is lovely and modern, if not a bit squishy. Most of the tables leave you feeling like you'll be elbowing your neighbour or are in the way of waiters/patrons/the door. For a place that is supposed to specialise in coffee, again my experience has been inconsistent. I am no coffee snob, but I know when Im really not enjoying my beverage. This has happened to me here. The food is a lovely lunchtime option though, with several sandwiches and breakfast options. The ingredients they use are fresh and high quality, so that even something like a simple piadina with buffalo mozzarella, basil and tomato is a delight. Its somewhat disappointing that they choose to get some of their pastries from a mass wholesaler - a place like this would certainly suit gourmet and homemade product.

Lien T.

One of the best breakfast places on Chapel St, so worth the 20min wait. The food is delicious and healthy. Good pricing and awesome atmosphere too... Highly recommended it

It's yum. Pork croquettes on English muffin with bernaise sauce.

I came here when it was called Dukes & I've had some pretty ambitious but #failwhale dishes : Duck egg on English muffin in a aioli mousse. Rock hard candied pancetta cubes. Shiraz jus on egg & field mushrooms. All enticed on paper but fell flat on the plate. The coffee though was always good and still is. Now under the new moniker Journeyman - which I think is less catchy than Dukes - the menu seems to have been spring cleaned of these "kitchen overreach" tendencies. A welcome change. We split the rockling burger - crumbed fat fillets with tartare sauce, dill, capers & alfalfa in a not too sweet roll. Delicious! And also the crispy pork croquettes on English muffins with bernaise sauce & apple slices. The pork was very tasty but not at all crispy, and the bernaise was too much of a good thing. Nonetheless very bloody yummy. Journeyman is a stalwart of the prahran brunch crew and I'm up for another visit. There are scrumptious looking sweet treats too that I will definitely be hitting up in a not too distant future.

Steve and Matt (the faces you will see on most visits) are hilarious and encapsulate good service - they're friendly, accommodating, and take an interest in their regular customers. This alone is worth visiting Miss Jackson for, but throw in their great menu and you'd be crazy not to put this place on your list of regular brunch haunts. Breakfast covers a lot of the usual suspects - but the winner is the corn cakes with bacon, avo and chilli jam, accompanied by a strong Allpress coffee to wash it down. The corned beef sandwich with pickles makes for a sturdy lunch and the home made slices and muffins are a great afternoon pick me up. A rotating specials menu offers seasonal variety - recently; a panfried garfish with a panzanella salad got two out of two thumbs up. Sit outside if you fancy some sun, at the large communal tables if you want to read the papers, or in the back room if you're after discretion. Either way, you won't be sorry.

It has an open airy atmosphere, fun lighting and a fantastic all night happy hour on Mondays. For a couple of yanks not used to $12 dollar beers this was a welcome development. And the Monday $1 oysters didn't hurt either! We started the meal with the truffled polenta chips and truffled mushroom arancini. Pretty much anything with the word truffled will instantly be ordered when I look at a menu. Both of these were crispy and delicious with excellent aioli dipping sauces lacing the plates. Being a couple of Americans we could not resist the Kangaroo carpaccio. It was good as a novelty but did not blow me away. The scallops and oysters were also very good. Hands down the best item we ordered, however, was the Lamb mint pea risotto. This was a masterful risotto prepared to perfection. A symphony of subtle flavors topped with perfectly medium rare pieces of succulent lamb. This dish could not have been better!

I have to admire them for going to the effort of bringing in their own cheesemakers and offering something a little different, though I think the menu could be a little shorter so that they could focus on nailing a smaller selection. The styling follows through to the centred Synesso MVP Hydra espresso machine. Small cuttings of red lilies on each table add a touch of subtle colour. Seating is an array of small tables both inside and outside along the footpath. The menu. An eclectic mix of typical cafe fare with hints of Asian fusion. The third section will likely surprise and confuse many and takes the hints of Asian fusion seen throughout the menu to the next level, entitled The Wok. Their most recent collaboration was Outpost Cafe in South Yarra (reviewed here). The restaurant has installed itself in the neighbourhood of Golden Fields and Baker D. Chirico. Just having these couple of places open up along Fitzroy Street shows that the area is turning itself around from being a grungy backpacker hangout / tourist hotspot to an exciting home of new and upcoming restaurants. It is amazing what the team has been able to do with the space they have. As you enter and make you way through it seems like you arrive in the front garden, walk up the stairs to the balcony or front porch, move into the elevated dining room and from there you have a clear view of the very open kitchen. And by open I mean you could accidentally wander in, no fault of your own and start cooking yourself. I don't suggest doing this as they have everything pretty much down-pat as it is. The front room of Fitzrovia has all kinds of sweets, pastries and pretty much anything you need to accompany the coffee that is a prerequisite when visiting. On both occasions we visited there was a small throng of people gathered just inside the doorway, which you could initially interpret as a waiting line - but as this is still relatively secret spot you can usually find yourself seated in a jiffy. Fitzrovia's coffee offerings are single estate coffees handcrafted by those blokes down at St ALi in South Melbourne. Head barista Cian Evans is a master of the craft and every coffee that we and our friends have ordered has been consistent in its top quality. If you fancy yourself the home barista they have retail packs to takeaway as well. On our first visit we got there during the brunch/lunch crossover. I have slowly whittled down WordMonkey's aversion to pork by getting her to only try the best and tastiest morsels of pig flesh. And when she opts for the pulled-pork sandwich over any number of eggy choices, you know you have not just won the battle but also won the war. And to make matters worse, when discussing what is the best pork sandwich in Melbourne, she has no second place. So that first visit was simply a pigfest. The flavours were all on-song, the pork juicy and flavoursome, the tangy salad exhibiting just the right balance of Asian herbs and apple-fennel crunch. We returned last week as a precursor to one of the biggest race meets on Melbourne's calendar - the Cox Plate - in conjunction with WordMonkey's birthday celebrations. Her and our Bondi buddy got the fizz flowing and it was up to me to ensure the quality of the coffee was still up to scratch - which it was. Showing up much earlier than our previous visit we had less of a selection but this was a blessing in disguise and we were able to hit a few more dishes rather than reverting to the old pork favourite. WordMonkey decided on asparagus, poached eggs, Daylesford dry-cured bacon crumble and creamy goat's cheese, with a punchy fennel salad. While visiting friend had house-smoked Tasmanian ocean trout and toasted quinoa with poached eggs and salad. Rave reviews on all fronts - the only complaint being that the portions were a little small for the price and that we had to order toast to bulk up the brunch. It would have been nice to get toast included. In the end, the toast we did order didn't turn up until right at the end of the meal. But no dramas, removed from the bill, life goes on. I opted for the Istra Daylesford dry-cured bacon, smoked mozzarella and pear relish toasted doorstop sandwich. If anything in that last sentence is not deemed heaven on a plate then I don't want to know you. It is the equivalent pork belly sandwich served at St ALi - same dreamy bread and all. But the bomb was the addition of that gorgeous chewy cheese and the added element of the pear relish. Fitzrovia is a special little place in a part of the city most people only head to if the weather entices them. The hook that will have people returning to this neck of the woods is that Fitzrovia is also open for dinner. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner being catered for, the team has acknowledged that with spring here and summer around the corner you may not want to be cooped up inside. So taking advantage of the proximity of both St Kilda beach and Albert Park on their doorstep they are offering 'the ultimate picnic lunch...made fresh on the day using the finest in Victorian produce'. They will even arrange chilled wine or champagne to be waiting for you to pick up at Prince Wine Cellars just down the road.
