I was in San Francisco to stay with friends for a week when I felt the undeniable urge to chop my hair. Sought recommendations from all the usual spots (Reddit, Google, Yelp) for a place that came with positive reviews and an incredibly reasonable price and Joseph came up repeatedly. Left an early morning message hoping for a cancellation or general availability and received a call back a couple of hours later with an appointment for the next day. Salon is simple but clean and well organized. Joseph and I talked a few minutes, along with my friends who joined me for the appointment, and I shared a couple of inspo pictures. 45 minutes later, I was walking out the door with the cutest lob ever. Don't hesitate - book with Joseph. You're in good hands! read more

Joseph was recommended to me by a coworker who absolutely loves him. I was in search of a new stylist, so I was very happy to take my coworker's advice to book an appointment with Joseph at his salon. I am so glad I found someone who takes such good care of my hair during my appointment AND can yap about anything and everything! My first appointment with Joseph, we agreed to keep my longer layers, but add some dimension by making my hair shorter in the front. He executed the vision perfectly! I left the salon feeling so beautiful! As a bonus, my hair felt so soft, even days after my haircut. Safe to say that Joseph is my new go-to hairstylist. I'm very much looking forward to my next haircut with him. read more

I've had my hair cut and colored here twice now, and I've never been happier with my hair! Joseph is very professional and talented at what he does. I showed him multiple inspiration pictures of the neutral brunette tone I wanted, and he executed it perfectly on the first try. This salon truly deserves 5 stars. Always a pleasure to come here. read more

I found Joseph Alex salon on Groupon and he really exceeded my expectation. I have been to a lot of hair salons over the years and sometimes the price tag just didn't meet the performance. To start, I am a little picky. Joe listened to what I want, he was very pleasant to talk to, it didn't feel force or awkward and he respected my time. The whole process for haircut and balayage took 2.5 hours. I have been to other hairdresser and it would take twice as long and I end up with over processed hair that I'm not 100% happy with. This was not the case, I left the salon genuinely 100% happy. The vibe of the salon is gorgeous. Feels homey and peaceful. I love the boho style decor. If it wasn't for Groupon, I would not have found this place but I will gladly return again. read more

OBSESSED!! Joseph is incredible! I decided to try extensions for the first time now in my 30's and I was super nervous to do it but I looked up so many stylists and landed on Joseph, and I couldn't have picked a better expert to work with my hair. I feel like a literal queen and he boosted my confidence and my power I already had. I feel like the old me when my hair was naturally long, thick, and luscious!! I just went in for my second session with him and I'm even more in love. I am getting compliments daily!!! It looks like my own natural hair and it a just so beautiful. There's no one else in the city I would go to and trust my hair with. I'm not sure how I've survived this long without you, Joe! I have been seeing Joseph for haircuts and color since 2018 and never looked back! Joseph has wonderful attention to detail and knows exactly how to provide the look you are going for. He has transformed my hair from box dye black to a beautiful ash blonde that I consistently get compliments on. Plus, my hair has never been damaged despite the bleach or color since Joseph does such a great job with bayalage. When I wanted warmer tones in my hair, Joseph also blended that beautifully too. My hair is 3a/3b curly, and he cuts my hair in such a way that it looks great both curly or straightened. He also always uses the latest in hair products. I have always struggled to go to the same hairstylist over and over because I felt so out of place every time. But as soon as I visited Joseph for the first time I felt so welcome and comfortable! He is the only stylist I've been to in my adult life that I have seen more than once, and I have been going back to him ever since my first appointment with him like 2 years ago! He is so nice and so patient, and answers every question you have about what would work or not quite work with your hair honestly Can't wait to go back to him in the next few weeks! read more

I can not believe I have never written a review for Joe! In a nutshell, he is a kind and fun hairstylist with a deep knowledge of his craft and an intrinsic understanding of what will work for his clients. I was lucky enough to find Joe through Groupon in 2016 or 2017 and I haven't looked back! This summer, he also did my hair for my wedding, which was a fun full-circle event and he did a FANTASTIC job. First, about his general hairstyling: The first time I went in to see Joe, I came for balayage and a haircut. Joe did a gorgeous cut and hand balayage which looked completely natural for the full six months between appointments (and I could have gone longer). He looked at me, listened to what I wanted, made suggestions and collaborated, and then gave me the best cut and color ever! I recommend him to everyone, and I think he is the best! It also says a lot when you can spend hours chatting with someone the first time and have it feel natural and easy and fun. He is a truly good person and a wizard with hair! For wedding styling: I asked Joe if he would be willing to do my hair for my wedding, knowing this is not his specific area of expertise. He asked me if I was sure and I was! I wanted a hairstyle that was low-key and easy, but very me. I ended up doing a style based on Maria Menounos' Oscar 2014 look - two french braids that lead to a braided bun, with wisps of hair pulled out on the front and sides. I showed Joe the photos of my inspiration, and he did a trial which I LOVED - he just totally got what I was looking for and was willing to work with me to make sure it was perfect. He also did half up- half down hairstyles for three others in my wedding party and they all looked gorgeous. I am so lucky to know Joe and to have him as both my regular and now wedding hair stylist. He has always done an amazing job connecting and truly understanding what I wanted for my hair, and he is completely professional and extremely experienced. I can not recommend him enough! read more

Joseph is amazing ! I've been going to him for years, best extensions and coloring on my textured hair!

I am in love with my new hair from Joseph's salon! It was my first time ever dying my hair so I was a little nervous, but Joseph patiently answered my questions and gave me an incredible new look! Subtle brown balayage highlights against my naturally dark brown Asian hair. Exactly like the pictures I'd showed him. He also gave me a cut to add more volume and movement to my hair. Would definitely recommend paying him a visit! read more

Update: 8 months later, and the balayage blended so nicely I didn't *need* to come in for a touch up, but I did anyways because I wanted to try something a bit lighter, which I also love :). I have to say, I really love how my hair grew out (both cut and color) and that speaks highly of Joseph's styling! Very pretty and low maintenance, which is just what I wanted! read more

Joe is awesome! I got a cut and balayage here after seeing it on Groupon. I recommend you buy it now, since he mentioned he's on the tail end of the deal. ~$160 for balayage and cut? You can't beat that! The studio is located in a cute little building, very conveniently located to Montgomery bart station. I would recommend taking bart if you live further, since parking in this area is a pain. Joe was really patient and knew what he was doing, and very caring. Asked if I wanted water, how the water temperature was, etc. I got a little nervous since the bleach was in for a while, but he noted that he used a slow developer since he didn't know how my hair would react, and it turned out the color I wanted. I needed to blend my line of demarkation from previous dyes, and it looks SO much better now. (See before and after pics!). My hair did turn out a little orangey but I think it was already orangey before, so not his fault. Some toning/blue/purple shampoo should hopefully help! It was definitely a little hard to get an appointment, and he is very busy so be patient! He might need a few texts from you to get back to you, but he will. read more

Highly recommend!!! I went in for a much needed haircut and Joseph was so kind and helpful!! He captured exactly what I wanted (long face framing layers with long layers in the back, slight curtain bangs while still keeping the long length) and did it perfectly!! I'm in love with my hair!! Joseph did an amazing job and the result is exactly what I had wanted. I have very long blonde hair that tends to damage easily (but I cherish the length and hate getting it cut), and somehow Joseph was able to bring my hair lighter, trim it but keep it long, and my hair feels so healthy! Not to mention the color is beautiful and I've already gotten a number of compliments. Joseph was also so friendly and fun and accommodating. I will absolutely be going back to Joseph! 100% would recommend read more

Joseph is great with blonde balayage and I always have a nice time catching up! Recommend!

I had a great experience here. Let me begin by saying that after a hair mishap a year or so ago when I asked for a balayage ombré and got 90s highlights (AND paid 400+ for it and the salon refused to fix it), I had very little trust left. It took a lot of courage and research for me to book an appointment with Joseph - and I'm glad I did. First of all, you'll be spending many hours in the chair, so it helps that Joseph is super chill and easy to talk to. Second, he respects your decision and will consult with you about your desired final result. Finally, well, he's great! He's young but has been cutting hair for more years than I can comprehend how so he's experienced and versatile. I initially wanted a lob and balayage. I ended up chickening out and getting a long lob (long long bob anyone? Lol) and it was all thanks to Joseph's handiwork. He knew the general direction of what I wanted (a more blunt cut with no layers) and delivered. The color was good too, an ashy blonde that took advantage of my previously growing out highlights. My initial qualms about him were over the photos here and on his other social media. Most of the customer photos were super old, so I think he can do better than what you see online. My other qualm is about the products he uses to bleach and tone - didn't really pay attention when he was mixing but I don't think he uses olaplex or any bond builders but I could be wrong. I'd like to see him incorporate that into the future. EDIT: I'm a fool of course he uses olaplex 10/10. All in all, check him out, I don't think you'll regret it. I'll definitely be returning to get my hair done again! read more

This review is waaaay over due! I've been going to Joseph for the last 4-5 years. He can practically style my hair exactly how I like it with his eyes closed. But even after I first started going to him, I would show him pictures and give him some direction on what I wanted, and he actually listened. If you say you want to cut off two inches, he'll make sure you mean two inches, because usually, you're only ready to cut 1.5 inches I typically go for long layers with a natural highlight that looks great on day 1 and day 100. (For the record, I have long, dark, Indian hair). I'm sooo glad my mom found Joseph many years ago because he's my go to guy now too. I highly recommend him for all your hair needs! Ps. He's also great to chat to, an afternoon with him is such a treat! read more

Came here after purchasing the balayage highlights with haircut Groupon. I hadn't ever gotten balayage done, only regular highlights, so I wanted to see which I like better. Joesph was professional and very friendly! He asked me what I wanted done and gave me exactly what I asked for. Couldn't be happier. I definitely the look of balayage rather than regular highlights. It looks a lot more natural. Would definitely come back to Joesph! Thank you! read more

Got a groupon for an ombre highlights and booked an appointment for the next month. I called initially to book an appointment but did not get any response so I texted Joseph instead and was able to book my appointment thru text. The place is in downtown, beside the ritz carlton residences, and is easily accessible from bart (powel/montgomery). Don't make the same mistake I did driving and ended up having to pay a fortune for parking. You'll need to ring Joseph up once you get there to be able to be let in through the door (weekends only i assume?) Joseph was really friendly and offered drinks when i got there. I showed him how I wanted my hair to look and he asked several questions regarding the style/color. I did an ombre highlight (ash-brown) and haircut (long layers) and it took me about 3 hours but Joseph consistently asked if i was doing okay or needed anything. I'm really pleased at how my hair turned out and will definitely come back here! read more

Amazing balayage from Joe! Since having a horrendous experience a couple of years ago, I've been reluctant to try new hairstylists other than my go-to in LA. After moving to SF around a year ago, I've been super behind on maintaining my ash balayage color. I was in need of a touch-up and cut and found Joe through yelp... He blew me away! He was honest and practical and gave me great product suggestions when I asked him how to keep my hair healthy. I love my new color and have already gotten a bunch of comments since I got it done three days ago. Not to mention, the price is super reasonable given the quality and time Joe puts in. Will definitely be back and highly recommend to anyone who's looking for a great balayage! read more

Jo and I become friends after a few visits, and it's been 2 great years since I started having him take care of my locks. The images I have posted are the transitions within the past couple of years. What he had done for me is to always help me transition into different colors and lengths. He is very considerate of his client's budget and situation, so you don't have to worry about walking out of there feeling like you've been depleted. Jo is an artist, not a salesperson. Now, to address a few things I see repeatingly on the yelp review: As a small business owner/designer who manages his own schedule and business, he doesn't have the time to answer every single call and text within 3 minutes. That's just how people keep themselves sustainable in this business. And truly, any good designer in SF would make you wait about 2-3 months before first visit. So ladies, be patient! I waited 2 months the first time I visited him as well. It wasn't until we started building a rapport then I was able to schedule him within a short time frame. However I still work around his busy schedule so he wouldn't be too burned out. He is very personable, sincere and honest. So be that type of person when you visit him and really trust him with his cuts and colors. He may be young, but sure is talented! read more

I was searching on Groupon for a balayage + haircut and I stumbled on Joseph's salon. The reviews were amazing so I decided to try it out. Scheduling the appointment was super easy online. He also called in person to confirm the appt. I came in with damaged and brassy asian hair hoping to fix this problem. He bleached once and toned twice. We also added Olaplex to the service. Olaplex made my hair incredibly soft and protected my hair from getting more damaged. He spent a whopping 4 hours on my hair. We did a lob and blonde balayage highlights. Joseph worked effectively and knew what he was doing. The salon is absolutely beautiful and is in a prime location. The moment I stepped in, I felt welcomed and comfortable. He always asks if you're doing okay, which in my book is a total plus. Joseph really took the time to get to know you and actually wants to give you the best service possible. If you're on the fence, I highly recommend him. He is a highly skilled trained professional and provides excellent service. Thank you Joseph, I love my hair! read more

I cannot believe I'm typing this, but this was by far and hands down the SINGLE BEST GROUPON EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. Communication/Appointment: - Joseph Alex has wonderful communication skills and I was able to get an appointment almost 3 weeks from the date of my reaching out to him. Voice-mail is available but texting is best & most prompt. I told him to let me know if anything opened up anytime before then and he said he would, but (understandably) nothing opened up before my appmt. Location: Beyond accessible by Montgomery MUNI/BART, and located on the 2nd floor of the building right next to Ginto. I would highly discourage driving/parking. The Groupon: Balayage & cut (regularly $230 but Groupon was $125) - don't recall if it included a blowout or not but he was beyond nice and did that for me too. I communicated my color preferences (burgundy balayage on black hair & very modest trim/addition of a few layers) ahead of time, so he was set by the time I arrived. Time: I had a 5:30pm appointment and walked out closer to 8:30pm. The results: Fabulous, stunning, sexy, sleek, elegant, and oh so freaking professional. The man, the myth, the legend: Joseph Alex is brilliant at what he does. He is honest, talented, so easy to chat with, genuine, and I truly can't wait to get to know him better. Long overdue review, but I love how my hair turned out! First, Joseph is very busy and always has a packed schedule! I texted him asking for an appointment and was booked all of October, and so we set up an appointment in November. Joseph takes sometime to text you back but he eventually will! He's really flexible and accommodates your schedule. Fast forward to the day we did my hair, Joseph's studio is located in the financial district! Very close to the bart station. When you first get there, you enter this old looking building. It was locked when I got there but luckily someone was exiting out the building. Then you make your way up the elevator to his floor and his studio is at the very end of the hallway! His studio is small but yet cozy :) As I sat down, Joseph asked me specifically what I wanted to do with my hair and I had an idea of what I wanted but wasn't so sure. Joseph really explained to me what would look good on me and how he would go about my hair and I loved his idea so we went with it! I was at the salon for about 5-7 hours but Joseph was super chill and always starting a conversation :) The end results was A M A Z I N G. My hair was a virgin black hair so it was difficult to dye it but Joseph made it seem so easy! I definitely recommend coming here if you want to dye your hair! Joseph did a great job with my hair. He took the time to understand what I wanted, listened to my concerns and made sure to check in with me periodically so we were always on the same page. I really appreciated this, as I've had too many haircuts where you sit down and they hack away without even asking what you want. I got a haircut/balayage highlights, and I was quite nervous because I'd never had my hair professionally dyed before (only box-dyed when I was 19). However, I'm very happy with the results. The color makes my hair look like it's always in the sun, which is perfect for summer. It's subtle and blends in seamlessly with my natural hair. Joseph also fixed the hack-job of a haircut I had before! The location is very convenient/accessible and the ambiance is cozy. Joseph is also very fun to talk to! I never really understood how people could spend a lot on their hair, but after the way I felt leaving Joseph's salon, I'd do it again! Highly recommend read more
