I am 39 years old and have had bunions since I was 12. Thank you to my great-mother and my aunt. My poor feet didn't stand a chance. Add to that 20+ years of wearing 4-5in heels 5 days a week and that is one hell of a recipe for disaster. I had always wanted to have the surgery due to the agonizing pain, but had always heard such horror stories and seen women walking around with metal pins sticking out of their feet and the "you'll never be able to wear high heels again" warning. To that I said forget it. Then a new friend came on the seen, 10 years younger than me, who had it done and raved about it. It was then that I decided to do more research.
I was first referred to Austin Foot an Ankle. Read the reviews - lots of people loved them. I went to make my consultation appointment and hung up so angry I wanted to go down there in person and chew them out. I had switched hand bags and didn't grab my insurance card. I was told that it was , "Against the law" for them to book my consultation without having my insurance information. I don't know who they thought they were talking to, but I have worked in the medical field, and my mother owns and operated a large Home Health and Hospice agency throughout S. Texas, was the President of the Texas Association for Home Health and still sits on the board - and she's a practicing R.N. I know a lot about insurance and for them to BOLD FACE LIE to me and insult my intelligence was infuriating. So, I continued my research.
I came across Dr. Snowden's name from yet another friend. I called, scheduled my consult and went in. No, the front desk is not warm and fuzzy, however, they are efficient, on point and get their jobs done. Dr. Snowden has two office locations so I imagine that their job is not easy. Add to that the fact that they talk feet all day, and I don't know how warm and fuzzy I would be either. They are nice.
I met Dr. Snowden, we talked about my situation and wether or not to do both feet at the same time or separately. I want to have a baby soon and he suggested that it would be 5+ years before I would get the second one done if I did them separately. I immediately decided to do both at the same time - the day after Christmas just a month ago today. BEST DECISION EVER!
If you follow the Dr's orders exactly - no work for two weeks, sleep in the post surgical shoes, elevate, ice, don't get your feet wet, take your meds as directed, don't heavy lift.... you should be good to go. My pain on a scale of 1-10, 1 being none and 10 being holy sh!t - I was at about a 4 for the first 2 weeks (with pain meds) and have not taken so much as aspirin/ibubrofen since that two week period. Seriously. I am so glad that I did both at the same time. I am now, one month later, able to wear certain side zip boots, flat shoes, tennis shoes and was told that in two more weeks that I could wear whatever I could comfortably get my feet in to. I have been instructed now to soak, massage, stretch and moisturize - and I do this daily/nightly. It feels so good (and a little painful) to do this.
Dr. Snowden assured me that I could wear shoes that I wore before and they would be more comfortable than before the surgery, provided I do my stretching, massaging and soaking. He also assured me that my foot size would not change (I had heard about this and wanted to make sure - I have a heafty investment in my shoes!) My younger girlfriend, who had both done at the same time, wears her 5 in heels now like it's nothing. I can't wait!
If you have been hesitating due to pain, or others stories, I assure you times have changed. This was so easy in the grand scheme of things and so worth it. When people see my scars they can't believe how good everything looks. They can't believe I am in normal, pretty, fashionable shoes.
I cannot thank Dr. Snowden and his team enough for changing my life - literally. I highly recommend you check him out. Don't let the slightly dated office or non-sorority-like front desk stop you - these guys know what they are doing and do it well! Traveling the world will be so much more comfortable now!
