I originally left a positive review shortly after surgery, but after living with the results long term, I no longer feel I can recommend this surgeon. I underwent bunion surgery on my right foot, along with correction of another toe. Unfortunately, the final outcome has been very disappointing. Following surgery, my big toe healed with a significant gap between it and my second toe, creating an unnatural appearance that has never improved. In addition, the toe that was corrected with a pin never healed properly and now "floats" rather than resting naturally on the ground. Despite prolonged taping and following the postoperative instructions provided, these issues never resolved. I became so dissatisfied with the outcome that I ultimately chose not to return for additional treatment. I understand that no surgery comes with guarantees, but I feel my concerns and the long term appearance and function of my foot were not adequately addressed. Years later, I remain unhappy with the results and regret having had the procedure performed. Based on my personal experience and outcome, I cannot recommend this surgeon. read more

DONT USE DR SHOC FOR SURGERY!!! My first impression of Dr Shock and his office was great, he had great bedside manner, he was friendly and seemed knowledgeable for basic podiatry. I WAS an avid runner and was having a slight issue of a bone spur. After a couple of steroid shots, Dr Shock recommended I get a simple surgery since I met my deductible and could do this easy surgery and be on the mend quickly. WHAT A HORRIBLE MISTAKE IT WAS LISTENING TO HIM!!! He should be not be practing medicine and sued for malpractice for my surgery. I underwent the surgery on his advice and was healing fine, inside the foot, perfect healing, no swelling, no pain, and I went in for the follow up. I had a tiny red dot on the outside suture where the stitch was sticking out. Instead of snipping the stitch off, he said. Oh I'm going to open this up and clean it out. I thought it was strange to do this but he's the expert (so I thought) and went home. A few days later my foot began to swell, got extremely red, and started to form an infection with oozing and puss. I kept calling the office and sending in pictures and time passed. Finally he said come in after 2 weeks. My foot got an infection from him opening it up and "cleaning it out" from my own bacteria that lives on the outside of the skin. He then tells me i have to have surgery again to clean it up. I come out of the second surgery and due to his negligence and the delays on his part, my ligaments on the inside were eaten by the bacteria so my pinkie toe has no support. I now live with a pinky toe that is elevated and cannot fit into many does, I have no feeling in the outside of my foot and can't wear many shoes because my toe sticks up and is very painful and embarrassing. DONT TRUST HIM FOR SURGERY!! Go to an orthopedic surgeon, NOT A podiatrist !! I live with this everyday, It effects my everyday life, makes it hard to play pickleball, run, and even wear heals. I was going to give 4 stars but after my last appointment, I am dropping to two stars and won't be returning. My first appointment for ingrown nail surgery went smoothly. The nurse came in, I explained how nervous I was and she took her time and was gentle with the numbing to ensure I felt comfortable before proceeding. Dr Shock then came in, made some jokes and did the procedure while being sensitive to how nervous I was. Second (and last) visit was completely opposite. Dr Shock came in and didn't know what I was there for. I explained to him that he asked me to come back a few weeks later to check up on my toe and then do my other toe. He didn't even bother to look at the healed toe - He didn't bother to ask how it was or felt or if there were any complications. I would have told him it did get infected and I had to go to an urgent care Dr at 2am and get emergency medication at 3am but I didn't say anything because he didn't seem to care. Completely the opposite of my podiatrist in CA who showed care and empathy throughout. He proceeded to quickly come towards me with a needle in his hand and as I was telling him I'm scared and not ready he grabbed my foot, sprayed it with the numbing and injected the needle in jab after jab! I was screaming the entire time and he did not let up. I get that they do this procedure everyday but it was very aggressive and severely lacked any empathy for me and left me completely traumatized. As I was screaming I yelled that his nurse was much more gentle last time and he sort of laughed it off. He then left to let the numbing kick in and as I was in the room i immediately decided to google reviews on him and the negative reviews about his arrogance is spot on. I contemplated getting up and leaving altogether but decided to just get it over with. He then came in and said something about how the nurse will love to hear my comment about her being better and he brought her in to do my next shot. She wasn't as nice this time either; I explained my other ingrown got infected and she just said "that's weird" and left. She was so kind last time and standoffish this time. Dr Shock came back in to do the surgery and after, he had to let it sit for a few minutes and as he was doing that, he had this weird zoned out look just staring out the window for minutes and didn't say anything to me. It was so awkward so as he was staring out the window I kept reading the reviews on him. I've never had a Doctor just zone out like that When I checked out, the staff member wanted to schedule another appointment. I was confused for what and she said it was a follow up to check how my toe is healing. Dr Shock didn't even bother to check my other toe so why would I come back here for him to just check? I told her I'm not scheduling a follow up and left and that's the last time I plan to come back. Would I go back to Precision Podiatry? Yes, but to another Doctor, not Dr Shock. The reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because they did what they were supposed to at a bare minimum, which was to take out my ingrown toenail. read more

Well, it is now 28 months (next week) since my foot surgery with Dr. Shock and I am writing a review. My frustration has reached a breaking point! To try to make a very long story somewhat shorter, I "was" an avid walker when all of a sudden the bottom of my right foot started hurting. I went to a podiatrist, had an MRI; and was told I had three tears in my plantar plate and needed surgery. I looked at the reviews of that podiatrist (on his surgery) and they were not very favorable, so I then researched doctors and had two "second" opinions. I decided on Dr. Shock. He had a great background of study and was very personable. Dr. Shock decided I needed to have my second toe (a hammer toe caused by the three tears on my plantar plate) fixed, a non-bunion (in my opinion) (I wasn't having any problems with the bunion) fixed (he stated that his "Board" would ask why he didn't add the bunion removal on to the surgery) and tendons in my foot tightened. The second "second" opinion doctor agreed. Now, two years and four months later, I can't walk without shoes and when I do, I am walking on a bone and have to shift my foot to the side to relieve the pain and pressure that causes. My big toe is still numb and feels very strange (Dr. Shock tells me that taking out the hardware from the bunion repair would help that, who knows!), I get spasms all the time and my last three toes are really close together (I am not sure if it's from the tendons being tightened or from my second toe being broken and straightened that caused space on both sides of that toe). To say the least, I regret even having the surgery! The initial "problem" is still present but in a different way. The bottom of my foot is still the issue! read more

I am so thankful that I found Dr. Shock's practice. After moving to Austin about 4 years ago, and being genetically "blessed" with very problematic feet, I wanted to find a doctor who was a good fit for me and my foot issues. Dr. Shock is exceptionally competent and compassionate, and he always uses conservative treatments first. He is extremely personable, patient, and puts me at ease with his sense of humor. After struggling with increasing foot pain for a year or more, I finally switched podiatrists and saw Dr. Shock. He was able to assess what was wrong with me and provide more support and information in a few minutes than I'd had in months from other providers. He respects and answers questions, and is your advocate and teammate as you figure out what to do when your foot *really hurts*. I ended up needing surgery, and was two days post-op when the ice storm hit. He was there for me by phone as we were unable to leave the house for a post-op visit, and I felt supported and cared for in the middle of a disaster, which is saying something. I have been seeing Dr. Shock for over 5 years on the recommendation of my neurologist. I had sustained severe structural and neurological damage to both legs and feet over the course of a lengthy career in pre-hospital emergency medicine . So severe that it forced(along with a nasty cancer diagnosis) an early retirement and a future in a wheelchair. Not on his watch Flash forward 5 years, multiple surgeries, medical procedures and assertive use of pharmaceuticals...I WALKED out of his office today. The only doctor I've never been terrified of going to! All of the 5 star reviews of Dr. Shock are absolutely correct. After seeing this many, I'll be honest, i thought something fishy was going on. A 5 star rated doctor on yelp with lots of reviews? But let me be the very first to say that each and every 5 star review has been earned! I went to Dr. Shock for a second opinion because of a 5th metatarsal break, hoping he would say I didn't have to have surgery. Unfortunately, the break was bad and he agreed that surgery was needed. Because of his amazing bed-side manner/humor/kindness I decided to go with him. The surgery, as terrified as I was because it's surgery, went so very well. Dr. Shock was able to put the screw in my foot through a small incision instead of cutting the side of my foot open (it was a terribly big break) and also gave me a nerve block so I have had very little pain since the operation (and none the first 5 days after it). Dr. Shock's medical credentials are stellar too. While personality matters so does medical training and Dr. Shock did a trauma residency in Seattle and attended Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago. So on both counts of bed-side manner and training Dr. Shock is outstanding. Also, his office staff is extremely attentive and easy to get ahold of and my entire experience with him has been stellar. read more

I saw Dr. Shock after something wasn't right in my foot from a surgery in December and the doctor completely dismissed my concerns and told me to push through the pain and go about my business! After daily pain for months I sought a second opinion. Dr. Shock identified the issue, torn ligament, within 5 minutes! 6 weeks later I'm better than ever after being under his care and now he is correcting my scar tissue issue from the previous doctor as well. It has been a couple of years since my bunion surgery and my foot is a mess. Following the surgery, I developed hammer toes, twice, and had to have further surgeries. I now have so much scar tissue that I can barely bend or move my toes/foot. In my case, Dr. Shock was a bit dismissive and spent very little time with me during my appointments as possible. He never explained things, especially during my pre-op appointments and my questions had to be directed to the front office staff because he would always scoot out of the room in such a hurry. Never once did he or his staff follow up after surgeries to make sure all was ok. I now need a second bunion surgery, but will unfortunately be researching a different doctor. read more

Viciously unkind, embarrassingly arrogant, will mock your pain, mock other patients in front of you, lie to you about your treatment plan, and he is a mediocre surgeon at best. I regret going to Dr. Shock. Some people have good experiences with him it seems, but I dreaded every single appointment with him because he was unbearable. After working for several months with another podiatrist and spending months in physical therapy, I had no improvement and actually had more pain. I then saw another doctor who put me in a boot for several months, and that didn't help either. I was frustrated and had resigned myself to just dealing with foot pain caused by sesamoiditis and a sesamoid fracture. The pandemic led to more time to exercise, and I ended up developing plantar fasciitis in the other foot. That is what led me to Dr. Shock for treatment. While dealing with the acute issue of the plantar fasciitis, I asked Dr. Shock about the other foot that had been a problem for so long. He listened to my experience, took x-rays to confirm the previous diagnosis and said that, though I might need surgery at some point, he was up for trying conservative treatment to see if it would help. With one steroid shot, I have almost complete relief from pain for the first time in years! The plantar fasciitis is better, too. I am so pleased and relieved to be out of pain and am grateful to Dr. Shock for his help. I would recommend him without hesitation for both acute and chronic foot issues. read more

Dr. Shock has been my podiatrist for 2 years now. He's seen me through several bouts of Gout and other issues. Dr. Shock is a great Doctor who really cares about his patients. He is a hard working doctor as his office is always busy and even when he runs behind a bit he personally comes in the treatment room and apologizes for the wait. I get shots in my foot every 6 weeks at least and this doc is so great that I don't even mind the shots. I'm so thankful I found this podiatrist and highly recommend him. read more

He fixed my bum foot and got me going again! I came to Dr. Shock after experiencing increasing pain in my foot. I had previously had surgery on my big toe bone that either wasn't done correctly or didn't heal well, plus an ankle that I was constantly spraining and had previously torn ligaments in. We tried to fix the issues with cortisone shots and when that didn't solves the pain, chose surgery to rebreak and align my toe and cut and shorten all my loose ankle ligaments. His staff was great with scheduling and answering questions and went above and beyond to make sure I got the care I needed. He monitored my healing and pain management for months post op and made sure I was fully healed. My foot is now better and stronger than it ever was and I have zero pain! read more

I don't recall ever being excited about seeing a doctor... it's weird, but Dr. Shock makes you at ease right away. He has a GREAT sense of humor BUT that's not what makes him so wonderful. Simply put, Dr. Shock fixed my plantar fasciitis. This was a problem that nagged me for years. We started treating very conservatively (shoe inserts, stretching boot, steroid shots), and that worked for a while, but when I'd resume running (I do about 12-15 miles per week in my very hilly neighborhood so there's lots of downhill hard foot strikes) my heel would start hurting so badly that I'd eventually have to give up running for weeks at a time until the pain was tolerable. Dr. Shock told me about a new stem cell-type theory that had worked for his other patients in my condition as an alternative to surgery. We continued to treat conservatively while I thought about it (to his credit he never pushed) and eventually I said, "okay, let's do it." After the stem cell injection, my foot got better for a while, but not significantly. I was very frustrated and ready to give up with the treatment, even though he'd told me that it might not work right away, and it didn't work for everyone, but when I canceled my appointment, he called me and asked me to give it one more steroid shot booster to kick the stem sells into high gear. I reluctantly followed his advice, and I'm happy I did, because he was absolutely right--that did the trick. That was three months ago and I've been running daily ever since, with little to no pain at all in my previously plantar fasciitis stricken heel. I could not be happier with the result. Hands down, Dr. Shock is the best foot doc I've ever seen (he's also taken care of ingrown big toenails and general foot care that you need when you're a 45 year-old guy who runs 2-3 miles of hills a day).
