I got to admit that it was a little distressing that as I was cruising Yelp today I came across the comment from a client from Berkeley about the alarming, abusive phone call he got from Joe Gabany. I thought I might be the only one. Clearly, the fatuous hothead makes a habit of this. Great!
Joe never did any surgery on me; we never got that far. So, I can't attest to his surgical prowess; but what I can say is: Jaysus, what an a**hole~!
I got to confirm, his office is gorgeous. It's also clear, from the way that his staff behaves, that he's an abusive boss. So, from coming in the door, you kind of have the signs. But feel free to schedule an appointment and judge for yourself. Just trust your instinct if you see I'm right and want to flee.
I have serious periodontal disease, mainly 'cuz I smoke; and 'cuz when I was younger I worked in rock 'n roll clubs and didn't always brush my teeth when I got home late at night.
**Kiddies, brush and floss. You have no idea how expensive this stuff is in your 40s.**
So, as I was saying, Joe's a major prick. And seems to think a great deal of himself and his skills. Without getting too into it, I'm the child of Ivy-league-trained surgeons, and I know folks with titanic egos who can actually back them up. This guy can't. Basically, what Joe doesn't realize is that dentistry just ain't that big a deal.
Do I seem like a pissed-off, vindictive guy? OK, hear my story, then decide if you can judge. I'm also smarter than I'm coming across, but Joe Gabany doesn't deserve focused thinking.
I went to Joe's office a couple of times for this horrible thing called a "deep cleaning," where they partially anesthetize your gums and then dig into them with sharp metal tools and this weird hydraulic water jackhammer thing. It hurts like hell, yes, even with the Novocain.
I talked with Joe about how I could improve my in home care to stop or reverse the periodontal disease, and he was utterly insulting and dismissive of any effort to do self care. He just wants to make money off the aftermath. Fair enough.
So, high on endorphins and nitrous after a procedure, I made the mistake of asking him if he could at least recommend a good primary care dentist so I could get regular cleanings. I was thinking he'd refer me to some greybeard with 30 years of experience known as the maestro of primary care dentistry.
Well, Joe referred me to a former student of his at University of the Pacific Dental school, a woman named Issa Rosker, who has a practice in the Crocker Galleria mall. Joe told me in making the referral that he was doing me a favor because Issa was "really cute". Of course, my gorge rose a little, and the Post-it with her name on it went in the trash as soon as I left his office. No disrespect to Issa Rosker-- because she may be a great dentist-- but I was just totally skeeved out by the way Joe had made the referral. My mom's a Yale-trained surgeon, and she would stove Joe Gabany's head in with a tire iron for that, and then stitch him up afterward just for the chance to do it again.
But wait folks, it gets weirder...: About a month later, I'm on a business trip in Memphis. I was working for Cisco at the time, and was in Memphis dealing with a gnarly logistics problem regarding FedEx shipments through US Customs. I'm tired, I'm stressed, and I'm cranky. I'm in a Ramada in fucking Memphis, which, contrary to what you might believe from all that Elvis lore, is a shithole.
My cell phone rings. "Brendan, this is DOCTOR Gabany." Joe goes on-- and I am very much summarizing his tirade-- to tell me that he "doesn't appreciate me wasting his time" asking him for a referral and then not following up. I had instead chosen an excellent dentist in my North Beach/ Chinatown neighborhood. "Who is this Doctor Woo?" Now, I hate to impute motivations, but it was pretty clear in his tone the racial spin Joe put on pronouncing Wallace Woo's name, like Woo was some inscrutable demon from the mysterious Orient treating dental caries with leeches and opium oil, instead of a graduate of the same dental school Joe teaches at.
I told Gabany all I asked for was a name, and that I had dismissed it out of hand based on the nature of his referral. Joe told me he had already sent my records to Issa Rosker. (By the way, sending medical records without express patient authorization in the form of a signed release form is a major ethical violation, and if you want to be dogmatic about it, a violation of the law.) I told Joe, matter of factly, that all I had asked him for was a name, that I'd chosen Wallace Woo as my dentist, and that Joe would need to send the records to him. Joe hung up on me without acknowledging my request.
I guess the takeaway is that I'd like to find out where Joe Gabany is from so I can fly there and slap his mother for raising such an obnoxious little shit. read more
