I have asked him to repair a backyard leaks that he came and looked and agreed to fix it. After he digging some soils and underneath house sidewalk concrete panel, he was able to find the leaks. He is not responding the text messages on time telling when he will come and things. He fixed the leaky pipe and left the ground opened to make sure no more leaks. In addition, he wanted me to pay the repair cost in full after finding the leak. After I paid him some portion of the total repair cost, he was mad that I didn't pay full and not willing to come and finish the work. Do you really wan to give any job to this guy. I am really glad I didn't pay him what he asked for. even if I paid the results would be the same. now I have to find someone to complete the work including constructing concrete panel for that he brock and removed to find the leak. read more

I had 8 planter boxes on my patio that were starting to fall apart after about 10 years of use. Jose suggested that I should have new boxes made with waterproof liners on the inside, to help delay the rotting process the next time. This was a great idea. Then he proceeded to draw diagrams and take notes right on his phone, finishing within an amazingly short time. I thought that his bid was very reasonable. He assembled beautiful new redwood boxes at home, with no mistakes in the measurements, and started to install them a week after he first visited my home, finishing the job 2 days after that. I was extremely pleased with the fact that he managed to transfer all of my plants from the old boxes to the new ones without damaging the plants. Some of these plants with their root balls were extremely heavy, so that the two men working really had to strain to lift them using straps. I also liked the fact that he took away all of the considerable debris, including the old rotten planter boxes, and cleaned up thoroughly. Jose is extremely smart, careful and efficient. He works from early in the morning into the evening. He has a lot of impressive machinery that he brings to the job. He listens to his customers and makes every effort to satisfy them. Jose Vargas may be the best craftsman I have ever met. He possesses every skill - carpentry, electrician, plumber - and is superlative in every area. He has done window replacements in my unit, cabinet replacements (including quartz counters), tv wall installation, built furniture to order, and so on. He has a wide range of friends and associates who can assist in those rare areas where he needs some help. He is also a self-starter - he'll identify problems you didn't know you had and fix them, come up with ideas and suggestions that are almost always better than the ones you started out with. The only negative is that he is so much in demand with building contractors and home developers that he is frequently unavailable. But he is absolutely the best if he is available. Unfailingly courteous, responsive, friendly, and treating your home issues as if they were his own. Fees reasonable to the point where I have often upped them to be fair. Always a skeptic it turns out Jose Vargas was an excellent choice. I needed two unwanted satellite dishes that had been on my home since I moved in removed. Jose had me text him a picture of the two dishes & he responded back within minutes with what I thought a fair quote. We scheduled a date (2 days out) but Jose reached out the next morning & was able to come at my convenience that day. Professional & polite Jose did the removals of these very heavy discs safely & cleanly. He removed & rolled up all the existing cables, plugged the holes they left behind & set the two dishes neatly aside for me to arrange their recycling. This guy is seriously overpriced for a handyman especially for mediocre work. I've used 4 other handymen in San Francisco over the years and they've all charged about half the price of Jose, and done way better work than him. One example is that he charged us about $400 to fix a cabinet that he replaced with new doors and hardware *incorrectly* and now it is worse than before. I wish I could get back my $400 and the previous doors that were way better than whatever he put in. Terrible. Do not hire this guy! read more

This is my second review of Jose Vargas. My wife and I are redoing our condominium, and contacted him through Yelp. Thus far, he has installed recessed lighting, assembled rather difficult furniture, and done a variety of small tasks, all with terrific efficiency and at prices so reasonable I tend to up his offer. The two most impressive feats, however, involve furniture and cabinetry. I described the furniture modification in an earlier review. [EDIT: I realize this review replaces the first one. The furniture modicification involved raising mahogany dining chairs two inches, as they were a little too low for the table. Jose took on the task and did it so well that the addition is absolutely invisible.] As to the cabinetry, we had a bedroom space in which a bookcase of somewhat unusual specs (wider shelves, height and width unique) was required. Rather than Google it infinitely, I asked Jose if he could build it. He accepted instantly. The result is a maple bookcase, superbly finished and crafted to the requirements we had, done at a reasonable price (again, almost too reasonable). I left a couple of messages which were not returned and when I called one last time, someone picked up the phone and simply hung up. Very disappointed. Jose was very friendly on the phone and in person. It surprised me when he actually showed up to view the scope of work; however not much after that. I had to send multiple emails for the quote and even when I indicated I wanted to hire him, multiple emails were sent attempting to schedule the job. After hearing a number of times that he had been out of the country, he asked "me" to call him. End of story. I'm guessing that if your job is not big enough or in Mountain View, Palo Alto, Danville and some other prestigious city, it's not worth his time, since he kept rattling off all the well off cities he had done work in. Jose was a referral from my employer, so I had higher expectations; which was my mistake. I have reached out to a number of "referred" contractors and handymay, none of which have been professional enough to follow through. I had a problem with the timer in my sprinkler system and was talking to my postman about it; he told me about a handyman who was very good at his work. I contacted him, he came out to see the problem and told me he could do it. As I was opening my garage door so we could go and get the unit, the garage door malfunctioned and wouldn't open. Jose immediately checked it out and helped us to open the door manually. It was an old door and very heavy. He tried to fix the worn out cable but then noticed on top the main spring was broken. He recommended a professional garage door business owner who came two days later, gave us the option to repair it or get a new one. We took the last option. Thanks to Jose's referral the new door is working very nice and we are very happy. Then he proceeded with the job we contacted him for in the first place, the timer is installed and doing its job every morning. We are so happy Jose was available; and so quick to come and help us; talking about been in the right place at the right time and so very helpful. For him, there is no problem that can't be resolved.
