One of the best food bargains of our three week trip to Europe. We had gone on a free walking tour of Amsterdam and the guide had a number of food recommendations- this was one of them. We made our way to this small food stand for lunch and decided to go for it. I am not sure I had ever had herring before but when in Amsterdam... My wife got the smoked salmon. Both were very good. Super fresh. Even the roll it was served on was very fresh. The prices were very inexpensive for what we ate. I would stop again!

Don't be dissuaded by these Yelp reviews, the only one you need to look at is mine!! Jonk Volendammer Haringhandel is my top pick for authentic Dutch herring. They do a great job of preparing the herring (less bones), making it a standout choice. There's a reason why this cart runs out by the end of the day! Unlike other herring carts, Jonk Volendammer Haringhandel stays open until 5:30 PM, while others close at 4. Note: Just like tequila, HERRING IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. How I'd describe herring: salty & slimy. Jonk Volendammer Haringhandel tries to offer a little something for everyone, if herring isn't your thing. But, if this is your first time, I'd recommend going all in and getting the chopped herring, which comes with pickles & onions.

About to enjoy my Haring!

This is for a pre-covid review. Please keep in mind that just because food is different or isn't what one is used to doesn't mean it is bad - it's just different! With an open American mind, I ordered the fresh herring - or haring. While it was different at first because of the raw texture, if you overlook it the flavor is just amazing! it's very similar to ceviche, which I love. I really loved the fresh flavor of the fresh fish. If you're not feeling like trying something new, they also have fried fish options (cod and muscles), or you can get the fresh fish on a roll to cut the fishiness. They have smoked fish and shrimp sandwiches as well, but I went for the fresh fish and am so glad I did. The business is in a small stand, with some counters to eat at outside.

Delicious fresh herring (and much more). Eat it Dutch style (grab the fish by the tail, tilt your head back and enjoy) or have it cut up in small pieces. Enjoy! Located between Kalverstraat and Voetboogsteeg.

It's great for getting to try a lot of things! The servers here work really hard, during the dinner rush there was only 2 of them, therefore be a little patient! The wait is totally worth. Also, make a reservation if you can, they are very popular. (It was packed and we arrived 20 minutes early for our table) We ordered oysters, lobster, seabass (whole), scallops, green salad, bread, and at the end, french coffee. The highlight of the entire dinner were the razor clams. Absolutely unbelievable and a must order if you ever visit and it's on the menu! The coffee was extremely dark and we didn't finish any of it. But, being American, we probably should've known better and researched before we ordered. The creme brûlée was also very enjoyable! (Side note: all the creme brûlées I had in Europe were pre-made and not hot when they came out. Europe tingz?) The bill didn't come out to be outrageous at all and basically all we ordered was seafood... how? All in all, the perfect dinner to end my birthday. I'll be dreaming about this place for the next few years until I visit Amsterdam again.

The only things that I felt that were a sure bet "good to eat" were the French fries (AKA Belgian fries) :) They were fried crunchy and the sauces are good. 5 Euro for a nice size medium paper cone full of fries (plenty for one person). They have at least 15 different sauces that you can choose, and some of them sounded a bit exotic... like a Thai peanut mayonnaise with onions. I tried the Belgian mayonnaise, which was a very rich mayo. The other fast food on offer, like the dürüm wraps, just didn't look that fresh and they were opening up plastic bags and taking the pre-sliced and cooked meat out and putting it into the wraps. This was actually about 2 minutes after I got there, and they announced they had stopped making sandwiches / wraps, and only were offering fries because it was late. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and think it's probably much better during the day. But the crunchy late night fries are good! And everyone seemed to be enjoying what they were eating. There is also a McDonald's next-door and a couple other sandwich fast food and pizza places that are open late a block or two away for more variety. This is a chain and there are several locations.

We had originally booked the Damrak 213 location but had to cancel due to a flight delay. Determined to make the most of our short time before heading to Paris the next morning, I chose this location because it was close to the areas we wanted to explore after dinner -- and I'm so glad I did. After reading on their website that they keep tables available for walk-ins at most locations, we decided to try our luck. As soon as my best friend and I walked in, we were not disappointed. The ambiance felt right immediately -- warm, inviting, and full of good energy. There was little to no wait, and the fresh seafood display at the front looked incredible. Vanessa was our lovely server and truly a whole vibe throughout the evening. She, along with "Mr. Champion," gave us great suggestions on where to walk and explore next -- and we absolutely took their advice. I love a menu where you can order and split a little bit of everything with a friend, and every single dish was perfection. The shrimp croquettes, king prawns, asparagus, roasted carrots, and fish and chips (kibbeling) were all served hot, fresh, and packed with flavor at a very reasonable price. The kitchen was run by a Black chef who was clearly putting in serious work and completely understanding the assignment. I wanted to personally commend him, but he was fully locked in and busy creating magic. Even the espresso martini stood out -- easily one of the best I've had. Great, relatable conversations, amazing food, and the evening ended on a sweet note with a complimentary lemon crème brûlée served with sparkles. This spot is truly a neighborhood gem. I'm so glad we chose this location -- it turned a rushed travel day into a memorable night dining with some true champions. We can't wait to return with more time to fully enjoy the experience.

Everything, from getting a drink to ordering food, felt like a struggle, and the staff didn't make me feel welcome at all. The food was okay--I've had better--but the overall experience left me feeling unwelcome, and I couldn't wait to leave. I'm genuinely surprised by the high reviews, because I felt quite the opposite. I'm not sure I'd recommend this place or come back

When you walk in, you're greeted by their in-house fish market, where everything is visibly fresh and beautifully displayed. You simply choose the fish or shellfish you want, they assemble your order, print a ticket, and you continue on to the wine shop. Before going any further, I want to highlight how impressive the fish market is. It feels almost like stepping into a wholesale seafood market, complete with checker-tape pricing. The staff will tell you exactly how each item can be prepared. For example, when we ordered a dozen mussels, they explained all the options and recommended a coconut curry preparation--an excellent choice and absolutely delicious. Once you have your ticket, you head into the wine bar. The team already knows how your meal will be prepared and offers thoughtful wine-pairing suggestions based on your selections. From there, you're taken to your table, where the outstanding service continues. We were served a beautiful basket of fresh bread almost immediately, along with our chosen wine. By the way, did I mention how beautiful the place is! For starters, I ordered a dozen oysters, and each pair was prepared in a different style. Every single one was outstanding. The mussels in curry sauce were so good that I needed extra bread just to savor every drop. Finally, we had monkfish--an impressively large piece, perfectly cooked, beautifully presented, and absolutely incredible. From start to finish, the entire experience was exceptional. The team at Pesca, and truly the people of the Netherlands, know how to do it right. Hats off to this outstanding restaurant. I only wish we had one where I live--I'd be there every day. Actually, it would be dangerous to have Pesca too close...I'd go bankrupt:)
